Sacred marks John McDermott's first recording with the Irish Tenors since rejoining fellow original member Anthony Kearns and Finbar Wright (who actually replaced McDermott in 2000). The Irish Tenors live up to their reputation as "gifted interpreters" with this collection, covering a wide range of spiritual material. Sacred was produced by the Irish Tenors' long-time musical director, Arnie Roth, who has also worked with Charlotte Church, Diana Ross, and Art Garfunkel. The album was produced in Prague at the Rudlofinum and ICN Studios.

Beyond words ..........2007-03-22

Having only recently discovered The Irish Tenors, nothing here was a repeat to me. And, even if it was, I can't imagine being disappointed.

If you are open to the idea that music can be a vehicle for a moment of sublime and sacred ecstacy, that may help convey what I find difficult to put into words.

While I live continuously and constantly in Our Father's presence, a music album such as this can certainly heighten the moment with Him.

Magnificent voices, songs and arrangements.......2006-06-17

This is an extraordinary collection. The songs are irresistible, the voices incredibly powerful and filled with appropriate emotion, and the orchestra is very simply great. You'll want to buy this album for others. Simply beautiful. A pure joy.

Not their best album.......2006-02-27

For the most part this is an enjoyable collections of sacred music. However the inclussion of "Lord of the Dance" and other modern tunes are dreary no matter who sings them.

I recently went to a concert to hear The Irish Tenors. They did several songs from this CD and it was great. If you like John McDermott as much I do then you must have this CD. This is a triple good CD with 3 top tenors.

I enjoyed most of the music. My main complaint is the repeated songs from John McDermott's Faithfullness CD. For us fans of John the repeats seem a bit too much. I think there are six reteats.

George is Wright.......2005-04-19

This was my second theatre organ CD purchase several years ago (after "The Mighty Wurlitzer: Music for Movie Palace Organs"), and I fell in love with it right away! Of course, back then I was just learning about the theatre organ, so I was eager for material.

The selections presented here are a good sampling of George's ability and repertoire. I particularly enjoyed the second track, George's own composition, "Boogie." I know personally several theatre organists who have tried to duplicate his technique on that piece and failed miserably trying!

I was amused by a reviewer's quip regarding a friend of George's saying these tracks were all "rejects." That reminds me of Virgil Fox's many attempts to bring a recording to perfection, spending countless hours on it if necessary. Well, for rejects, they sure sound pretty good to me!

I know that personal taste varies widely. However, I certainly didn't find this CD bland at all, but quite enjoyable. I think you will, too.

BEAUTIFUL VIBRATIONS FROM THE PAST.......2003-12-27

George's test tapes.......2003-10-10

This CD is a compilation of two tracks from George's first album for the HiFi label back in the mid 50's along with other material which was probably recorded at different times and later released, along with other selections, on two HiFi Life series LP's - "Sweet and Low" and "Tibia & Vox."

Except for "Stars and Stripes Forever," "Boogie" (a George Wright original composition) and "Under the Double Eagle" (a cut from a later HiFi release which was misidentified as "Washington Post March" on the original LP), none of the other material was ever intended for release. A friend of George's explained it to me this way many years ago, "Those are all rejects - every one of them. It's some stuff that he just did." Basement tapes, in other words. Some of it appears to have been test material to see how the organ would record, others tracks appear to be outtakes from material which was later released ("All Through the Night," for example, another version of which was released under the title "Evening Hymn" for the "Hymns That Live" album, most of which is available on another Legacy CD).

This CD is definitely worth having if you are a big George Wright fan, as I am. It is currently the only CD compilation of the "outtake" material available. It is worth noting, however, that the two opening tracks and the last track are now available on Banda CDs, and the sound is much better since Banda used the original master tapes rather than the tapes used to master the LP's, as Legacy apparently has.

One additional note: on all the tracks, the organ is a 5-manual 21-rank Wurlitzer originally built for and installed in the Paradise Theatre in Chicago and at the time of this recording was installed in the basement studio of Richard Vaughn, the founder of High Fidelity Recordings, Inc., the label for which these tracks were originally recorded.

Technically Flawed CD.......2000-11-28

Legacy did a very poor job of transferring a very good original tape recording to CD. It actually sounds like they used a duplicate tape intended for a 33-1/3 record pressing instead of the original master tape recordings.

The audio equalization is so bad the mighty Wurlitzer organ screeches and grates on the ear. George Wright's Banda CD remasters are far, far, better. Legacy needs to redo this recording and volume two as well.

The first two selections are good. The rest are really bland. The capabilities of the organ are not exploited. Definitely does not justify the "mighty" in the title.

Mervana, Irish-style.......2002-06-17

You've been searching for early Merv Griffin. You would love to have some of his early-50s RCA sides on CD, but where to find them? Well, you're in luck, because "Ireland Forever" contains seven of them. This is the place to hear Merv go Irish on numbers like "The Kerry Dance" and "I'll Take You Home Again Kathleen," and in excellently-restored sound. Previously, these had existed as an EP of songs from the movie "The Quiet Man." I wonder if Merv, when he was crooning "Kathleen" into an RCA microphone, expected these performances to be around half a century later?

Other highlights include a wonderful Irish tenor named Leo McCaffrey and a lovely version of "Look to the Rainbow" by Fran Warren. A CD sure to inspire friends and family to inqure, "'Ireland Forever'? What the heck is this?"

Spectacular Mantovani Music.......2004-09-20

This is one of Vocalion's latest re-issues of two original recordings made by Mantovani and his Orchestra in 1960. It pairs the folk songs of the "American Scene" composed by Stephen Foster and others, along with concert gems, all brilliantly arranged by Mantovani and his collaborator Cecil Milner. Stephen Foster's time-honored music appears to be having a comeback these days and so will the utterly appealing orchestral interpretations given to these chestnuts by the masterful brilliance of the Mantovani sound and the artistry and discipline of his musicians. Some 45 years ago, Mantovani's American Scene LP remained 30 weeks on Billboard's Top 40 List and rose to a high position of number 11. Listeners now, as then, will enjoy the melifluous string-laden arrangements of Beautiful Dreamer, I Dream of Jeannie, My Old Kentucky Home, Grandfather's Clock, and Goodnight Irene, and they will tap to the lively, full orchestra arrangements of Camptown Races, Ring de Banjo, and Turkey in the Straw. Decca's "Concert Spectacular" CD, never issued and rarely heard in the United States, teases the listener with a distinctive waltz time arrangement of the popular Sousa march, Stars and Stripes Forever. Many will shed a tear when they hear the cathedral sound of languorous strings and woodwinds in Danny Boy. This Concert Spectacular offers the listener a plethora of musical imagery.
