    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars Wawa! A gem from late 70s Dakar..........2005-06-11

A few years back while vacationing in Amsterdam, and listening to a short wave radio, I caught a song that was quite unlike anything I had ever heard before. The vocals were familar - soaring in an obviously Senegalese manner, as was the rhthym - but it was the wailing PSYCHEDLIC guitar and high energy late 70s production value that made the whole thing unlike anything I had heard from fellow Senegalese greats Baaba Maal or Mansour Seck. Or even Yousso N'dour who, as it happened, got his start in Etoile 2000/Etoile de Dakar in the late 70s before going on to conspire with Peter Gabriel and other western musicians.

Once the song was over the only words I could decipher from the announcer were "Etoile deux mille" and from then on I checked in every CD shop in A'dam for a good week or two. Believe it or not I found it on the day before returning home!

Late 70s Dakar was an interesting era for groups fusing local sounds (mbalax) and traditonal instruments with fuzzy psychedlic guitars and Cuban tunes thrown in here and there - Boubou N'gary was the perfect ambassador to open my ears to it all. This one CD eventually lead to my Senegalese film obsession (Moussa Sene Absa's Tableau Ferraille starring Ismael Lo, anything by dearly departed and sorely missed Djibril Diop Mambety, and Ousmane Sembene).

I highly recommend the entire Dakar Sounds series when you can find them especially No. 1 de No. 1, a compilation covering a wide range of Senegalese musicians (including a lovely devotional piece with Mansour Seck and a Mauritanian singer). 'Nuff said...
