Mahshar (DJ Maryam) whose album, after getting stolen from her song writer’s and being distributed among young people a few months ago, became very famous that Iranian all over the world became interested to buy her records, but unfortunately there had not been any official releases of her records before Persian Nights. After her interview with BBC, we decided to add one of her songs to this completion after receiving indirect authorization from her.

Boskovsky's encyclopedic collection with the Vienna Philharmonic, recorded between 1957 and 1976, is as close to definitive as one is likely to get. There was a special camaraderie between Boskovsky and the Philharmonic--he was a member of the orchestra's violin section for 37 years and conducted their New Year's Day concerts from 1955 until 1979. There was also a special empathy that these performers, as custodians of a tradition going back to its origins, felt for the music of the Strauss family. It comes across quite wonderfully on these mid-price CDs, which have been painstakingly remastered for an edition every collector should have. --Ted Libbey

If you love or are just curious about the music of Vienna's Strauss family, this is the box set for you. You need look no further. Willi Boskovsky and the Vienna Philharmonic set the standards for the performance of these sublime waltzes, polkas and marches. The sound is fine, too, even though the recordings are not new. This is, quite simply, a magnificent set. I cannot recommend it highly enough.

A long series of Strauss music recordings conducted by Willi Boskovsky provides the contents of this slender, super-compact box of 6 CDs. Those who collected the original issues should check the contents before jettisoning them, because not everything has been reissued here. I especially regret that the vocal version of "An der schönen blauen Donau" has been omitted.

No combination has ever excelled Willi Boskovsky and the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra in performing this repertoire. Although the waltzes, polkas, quadrilles, marches and overtures were performed over and over again by these musicians, there is never a hint of workaday routine or staleness to be heard here. Everything seems to unfold naturally. Each item's inherent character is displayed. Tiny nuances and felicities of phrasing and a balance that favors the melody and reduces the accompaniment make these performances inimitable. The performance of "Morgenblätter" seems to provide a tad more excitement and impact than the other 85 items.

The recordings were made between 1960 and 1976. They are studio recordings, not deriving from the famous New Year concerts, and all but the few items from the very earliest year provide excellent sound.

Carlos Kleiber once said that he wanted to be "the next great Strauss conductor after Herbert von Karajan." He's achieved it. This is another amazing performance. The energy is his interpretations is palpable. I'm a huge Strauss fan, and a huge von Karajan fan, but this just might be one of those rare cases of the pupil outdoing the master.

5 out of 5 stars The Finest Gypsy Baron Overture.......2000-05-23

I've heard that when Carlos Kleiber rehearses an orchestra, they get rehearsed thoroughly. Such is the case concerning this timeless recording of Strauss music. The Gypsy Baron Overture is given the best performance I have ever heard, live or on recordings. The opening string passage couldn't have been played any better, even by gypsys themselves. The finesse and clarity that the Vienna musicians play with is remarkable. And if one can unglue themselves enough from listening to the Gypsy Baron more than once, the Thunder and Lightening Polka can easily takes its place. Who else has attempted this polka at such a break-neck speed but has also kept the spirit of the music just as intense? Carlos Kleiber wins here!

5 out of 5 stars The Finest J. Strauss Recording - Ever?.......1999-12-19

As I write (1999), this 1992 performance has become the stuff of legend, and with good reason. Carlos Kleiber, perhaps the premier conductor of his generation, achieved a stupendous feat in grafting his extraordinary musical intelligence to pure, unabashed glee to create what may be the finest single Strauss performance ever. There isn't a single note which doesn't communicate verve, wit, and joy, nor is there a better argument for the case that Johann Strauss, while not a profound composer, was, in his idiom, a GREAT one. (It's interesting to note that the strength of his abilities was perhaps the only thing upon which Wagner and Brahms agreed.)

The Vienna Philharmonic has never sounded better, and the occasion - the 1992 New Year's concert - brings the ultimate Strauss audience to the proceedings as a participant. In short, this is a stupendous recording, and it should serve as a cornerstone of any music lover's collection.

        I have both of Jooya's cds and just love them. The songs are so beautiful and are performed very artistically. These are memorable songs from all over Iran. I highly recommend Jooya's cds, and I am waiting for her next one!

        I am an Iranian who's been living in the UK for more than 20 years. Having listened to this CD, it reminded me of the good old days back home when life was so different.

        If you're like me, I recommend that you buy this CD and immerse yourself in a bit of nostalgia!!
