Leonardo DiCaprio stars as Richard, a young traveler with a curiosity streak that leads him to Thailand in search of adventure. This video-game fanatic finds himself following a map that supposedly leads to an island paradise. The accompanying soundtrack mixes the technological fascination with the exotic journey of the jungle, featuring several ambient electronica tracks (Underworld's epic "Ball," Leftfield's "Snakeblood") and other tracks mixed for futuristic sound. New Order provide the previously unreleased "Brutal," representing the sharper end of their spectrum, with a heavier guitar mix than usual. Asian Dub Foundation provide a modern interpretation of dub legend Lee "Scratch" Perry's "Return of Django." Sugar Ray expand their range with the calypso groove of Brian Eno and John Cale's "Spinning Away," and it's an unexpected gem. Bratty Britpoppers Blur remix "On Your Own" to sound like a video game gone beserk. Film scorer Angelo Badalamenti brings things full circle with the surprisingly upbeat collaboration with Orbital for the closing track "Beached." --Rob O'Connor

Album Description

The Beach Motion Picture Soundtrack includes New Order's "Brutal," the first new song available from this Brit troupe in a long time. The soundtrack also features a new track from multi-platinum English artists All Saints. The song, "Pure Shores," was produced by William Orbit (Madonna) and will be found on the band's forthcoming album. The soundtrack is rounded out by brand new songs/mixes from Sugar Ray, Blur & Faithless.

4 out of 5 stars Perfect album to travel with.......2006-01-24

A really good mix of various electronic music. I was surprised that "Spinning Away" was a track from Sugar Ray. It is quite a good track with a very island feel to it. While I thought the movie could have been better, this soundtrack is one of the best I have heard.

5 out of 5 stars Bombastic Best Beach Broadcast.......2005-09-30

The sountrack really matches every scenes in the movie. The sequencing and timing of the music with the scenes are uncanny. I used this sountrack as background for any occassion and it was just too perfect and listeners love it.

3 out of 5 stars A pleasant slice of electronica.......2005-04-27

Let me start by saying I have never seen "The Beach". When it came out, it did not seem like the type of movie I would be intersted in seeing. Because I had never seen the movie, I had no impulse to listen to the soundtrack either. However, I recently borrowed the soundtrack CD from a friend, and was pleasantly surprised.

I love techno and electronica music. I have been a fan of this type of music going back to it's new-wave/techno roots of the early 80's. This CD offers a wide sampling of electronica, including some of the usual suspects/pioneers of the genre such as Moby, New Order, and Orbital. The CD also gives some artists not known for this type of music a "techno" vibe. All Saints, who were pretty much a Spice Girls clone of the late 90's, are given the electronica treatment on a tune called "Pure Shores". I actually like this song better than some of the material they recorded on their own. Perhaps they might have stayed popular a little longer if they had moved more in this direction than in the Spice Girl direction. Another group given a new spin is Sugar Ray. I had to check the track listing twice, because Mark McGrath sounds almost completely different on "Spinning Mary".

This CD is ambient enough to put on your computer and play in the background while you work and/or study. It is certainly not a masterpiece, but worth a spin.

4 out of 5 stars For the most part, a good soundtrack.......2005-01-02

All in all, I think this soundtrack captures the feel of the movie well. "Pure Shores" by All Saints is definitely the most "poppy" song but it works nicely with the whole tropical atmosphere of the movie. I found myself liking songs which I didn't think I would, for example, Sugar Ray's take on "Spinning Away." Only a few songs didn't grab my attention, or maybe they just work better when listened to while watching the movie, and don't make the same impact when heard by themselves. One song that would have been *perfect* for this movie (although admittedly out of place) is Toad The Wet Sprocket's "Walk On The Ocean." In any event, this is a fun soundtrack to play while driving or simply sitting alone. And you don't even have to like the movie to enjoy it.

5 out of 5 stars Two Thumbs Up!.......2004-12-13

This is one of those albums that grows on you over time. It is best listened to while hiking, traveling across the country (or the world), relaxing on a beach, or flying to some exotic land. The music, primarily ambient and soothing electronica ("trip hop"), sets a perfect mood for anyone's journey into paradise. The weakest song on here is probably the track by All Saints (which was subsequently the big promoted single from the movie). It just sounds too much like bubblegum pop and doesn't sit well next to the likes of Moby, Sugar Ray, or Blur. Some of the songs are slow and pulsing, while others are fast and heavy. The soundtrack itself is arguably better than the film. It's "beach music" at its best (no pun intended).

In 1988, a Guinée-born kora (West African harp-lute) maestro burst upon the scene with "Yeké Yeké," a crowd-pleasing electrified dance hit. But like most Manding jelis (aka griots---hereditary musician/praise-singer and/or historians), his success followed a rigorous childhood apprenticeship, after which Kanté began to perform throughout Africa before eventually migrating to Paris. These days, he is also an activist, having been appointed F.A.O. ambassador in the mission to fight hunger and poverty worldwide. Sabou constitutes a long-awaited return to Kanté's ancestral heritage, an impassioned, crisply produced acoustic set complete with breathy flutes, chime-laced percussion, and joyous call-and-response female choirs. But like his former Rail Band collaborator, Salif Keita, whose recent unplugged masterpiece, Moffou, created a sensation, Kanté is incapable of producing a stuffy, hide-bound retread. Every track crackles with modernity and invention, as refreshing and changeable as tomorrow's winds. Do not---repeat, do not---miss this one! --Christina Roden

Album Description

Sabou is an all-acoustic release by the legendary West African singer and kora player Mory Kanté, the first African artist to sell a million singles with 'Yéké Yéké', which topped the European charts in 1988. An exceptionally talented griot from Guinea in West Africa and a contemporary with Salif Keita in the Rail Band back in the 1970s, Mory Kanté has produced a stunning new album of depth and poise that is firmly grounded in his traditional griot roots.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent, excellent, excellent !.......2005-08-02

This album is beautiful from start to finish, although the songs do tend to blend together in a single listening. However, you can't go wrong with including EVERY cut in a mix. In fact, you must !

5 out of 5 stars Mory's roots.......2005-04-21

After doing a stint with the legendary Rail Band, Guinean kora player, balafon player and band leader Mory Kante zoomed onto the international stage 16 years ago with "Akwaba Beach", a bright chunky beautifully-produced album of dance tunes played by a large tight ensemble with a rich brass chorus. It took the European dance floors, especially in Paris, by storm. The single "Yeke Yeke" was the first by an African artist to sell over a million. The similar-styled funky albums that followed also had some great moments but eventually became so specifically dance-oriented that the African essence seemed to disappear altogether, and sterility began to take an upper hand.

So the fresh energy on this album is a welcome affirmation of a great musician gone full-circle. As another x-Rail Band singer Salif Keita did on his "Moffou" album, Mory Kante has put aside the big dance band sound and recorded a totally acoustic rootsy album that is one of his best yet! The dance element is still provided by a pulsating warm beat but this vibrant music really speaks with griot roots. Every track is an invitation to join in the fun, with compelling female backing vocals, sparkling kora and balafon riffs, colourful percussion, a sweet African flute and other instruments all jiving euphoniously together to create a veritable river of sound. The accompanying booklet describes the story each song tells, along with the instrumentation used.

Be swept away by this sublime feast.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous.......2005-03-30

This CD is simply joyful in sound. The artist Mory Kante became famous releasing albums with electric instruments but grew up with very traditional music. This album is somewhat of a return to his roots, using almost all acoustic instruments for a more traditional sound. Granted, you have to be expecting an acoustic sound. The vocal choruses are gorgeous, too, but again, this is a different vocal style than is common in the US, so you have to be expecting and be open to a different sound. That being said, I thing this album is awesome. The rhythmic tapestries weaved by the instruments and voices are enticing. I'm actually involved in playing hand drums, and I enjoy playing along with some of the tracks on this CD. Overall, this is a well-composed, well-recorded collection of music, well worth a try if you're open to some high quality, acoustic, African music.

5 out of 5 stars Superb!!!.......2005-03-15

I can't believe that someone could give this great album only one star. I think that is only possible if the reviewer dislikes West African music to begin with.

This album is a wonderful example of West African music rooted firmly and deeply in the traditional music of the region. Traditional instruments are used throughout and the effect is enchanting.

Amazon, you really need to offer sound samples of this CD so that people can get an idea of what this outstanding album is about.

... just a quick note: This is one of Mory Kante's most infectious records. The lead-off track, "Ye Ke Ye Ke," is all over the place these days -- popping up in soundtracks & covers (even Jean Luc Ponte covered it -- & not a bad job, either). If you like "Afro-Pop" in general or know your Kora-players, you owe it to youself to have this in your collection. Lots of cleanly recorded tracks w/ lots of fire and polish -- and the beats! You just gotta move when you hear this stuff! Of course, the drumming is excellent through-out. He may not sing as soulfully as Salif Kaita, but he's still excellent, uses lots of powerful-but-tasteful brass, is an excellent Kora-player, & makes excellent use of his back-up singers (as do most "afro-pop" stars). There's also some very good electric guitar breaks. If it HAS to be sung in English for you to enjoy it, sorry. If you find the nasal-quality of North African-style singing ONLY annoying, sorry. But if you love lush dynamic grooves, great bass-lines, quality production & world-class talent, order now.

People are inclined to their own musical tastes, but i'm not sure I can think of anyone that I'd recommend this disc to. Guinean artist Mory Kante is supposedly one of the great singers in a country of great musical history, but this is at best an uninspired imitation of Western pop dance music. Western pop artists can do it better. In contrast, many western listeners love african drums and traditional stringed instruments!

I understand the effort to produce African albums that are accessible to Western listeners. I also understand and appreciate African artists developing their music by assimilating new sounds from other parts of the world into the music. But I'm not sure I can find any redeeming value in a track like "Ayeh," which basically sounds like a middle-eastern inflected karaoke vocal over a Gloria Estefan soundtrack. Why use a cheezy synthetic drummer in a part of the world where many children still learn to play drums in grade school?

The "hook" in this album is presumably the title track "Touma", which listeners will recognize as another variation on the African traditional tune on which "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" is based. This version is an appropriate soundtrack for an aerobics workout.

If you want to hear great West African music, try Djelimady Tounkara's "Sigui" or Taj Mahal's manding-blues fusion "Kulanjan".

4 out of 5 stars An absolutley wonderful CD.......2005-05-11

I became exposed to Mory Kante through this CD given to me as a gift. It's wonderful. Every track ranges from above average to great. Mory is from Senegal, and singing in his native tongue, so I have NO idea what he's singing about, but that doesn't matter. The entire album is very upbeat, uplifting and infectious. I find myself trying to sing along because it's just so darn enjoyable. Great music knows no language barriers, and this disc most certainly qualifies. Not long after this disc was released, I was fortunate enough to see Mory live in concert, opening for the Stranglers in Paris. Wonderful. I must say I loved this disc from the time I received it, and the wonderful memories of the concert do not influence my review of this disc.

      I loved it instantly.

So..... what could I compare it to? Well, I wouldn't say they're alike, but the first thing that pops into my head would be the upbeat tracks from Afro Celt Sound Systems 2nd CD, "Release". They both just grab you and take you on a wonderful journey. I don't know anything about Mory Kante other than his music, and that's enough.

Grab this disc and enjoy it. It's great.

I only rate it 4 stars because personally, I'm stingy. A disc has to be flawless & an absolute classic to rate 5 stars in my book. That's very difficult. This comes close. I think people fling out 5 star reviews FAR too frequently here. I'm trying to be fair & objective.

An extremely worthy effort, I'd give it 4 1/2 if possible. Standout tracks include "Mankene", "Ayeh", & "Touma (Wimowe)", which is a version of "The Lion Sleeps Tonight".
