Customer Reviews:
Ever wondered what was before Bach, Lully, or Palestrina?.......2007-04-29
During the days of the Renaissance, the madrigal was one
of the most popular musical forms and outputs. The King's Singers, a modern-day all male vocal group, demonstrate the authentic sound of which these 34 chosen madrigals may have been performed. In the Renaissance, in place of sopranos and altos, there were countertenors (men who sang falsetto in a feminine range). That's what these guys do; just listen to the first few and you'll automatically be transported back to this magical and sort of other-worldly time. If you've been to Renaissance fairs, it will make you think of those, too.
The King's Singers offer 34 well-chosen madrigals from composers like John Dowland, Hans Leo Hassler, Clement Jannequin and some composers who wished to remain anonymous. They are grouped by the different languages to show that the madrigal wasn't just the rage in Italy where it had originated but at various other places all over Europe, the hub of the music world. The Italian ones come first, then in English, French, Spanish and German. The best one in the set is "La Guerre" which runs 6 minutes, and is an incredible vocal showpiece. It's even very funny at times.
If you want to hear exactly how Renaissance madrigals sound, this is the real deal.

Amazon.com essential recording
At one point in his life, Gould projected recording a complete Haydn sonata cycle. It's a terrible pity he never got to it, for if he had, the music itself would doubtless be more popular than it is today. Gould himself realized that Haydn's solo keyboard music was generally of higher quality than Mozart's, and we can only be grateful that he did get around to making this delightful set containing the last six sonatas. Aside from his gifts as a musician, Gould was also one of the funniest artists of this century, just as Haydn was in his day. This meeting of two great comics makes for some highly memorable listening. --David Hurwitz
Customer Reviews:
SOME MAY ENJOY THESE REALIZATIONS..........2006-05-19
I, however, as a GG fan of nearly 40 years find it sad that he wasted his last years tinkering around with Haydn's banalities.
Anyone who thinks Haydn was greater than Mozart has a screw loose; anyone who hates Gould's Mozart likewise has a screw loose.
When I think of the great pieces GG could have realized in his late days, it nearly makes me weep that he wasted his time on Haydn. GG should have instead completed his projected Scriabin cycle--at least giving us Scriabin's last five exquisite sonatas. Then, GG could have played and over-dubbed and played with his own recording Schoenberg's piano transcriptions of his two chamber symphonies. What a loss for humanity GG trifled with Haydn!
On the other hand, Gould was only a human being: he had his anxieties: perhaps Haydn's simplicities smoothed it out for him.
Anyway, from my view GG could almost do no wrong; therefore, some of you may enjoy these readings. Cheers.
Not Haydn!!!.......2005-05-25
This just is not Haydn.I am referring to the last of the sonatas where Gould is glibly parading his pianistic skills.Sounds more like a practice session.David Hurwitz has rightly called him more or less a joker!Hurwitz is dead wrong in including Joseph Haydn(not Papa Haydn-a condescending phrase)along with Gould.Haydn's sonatas are full of grace and sunny cheerfulness. There are also some incredible tender moments unmatched by any other composer(including Beethoven ,Mozart).Just to illustrate this listen to the same last sonata by Sviatoslav Richter. There is a great yearning and haunting tenderness(Totally murdered here by Gould!).Watch Richter perform this beautiful work in the DVD 'Richter:The Enigma'.Richter clearly explains the greatness of Haydn-The Freshness and Humaneness that is Franz Joseph Haydn.I also recommend Haydn's Piano Trios by the Beaux Arts Trio-Another marvellous collection. For a complete collection of Haydn's Piano sonatas I strongly recommend Jeno Jando on Naxos-Excellently performed and do not miss any of Richter's Haydn Sonatas wherever they are.
Heavy Handed Haydn!.......2005-02-16
This was actually the very first recordings of Haydn's Piano Sonatas that I ever heard. After they heightened my curiousity to a new high, I decided to try other artists performing these great works. First, 1989 and 2003 recordings from Emanual Ax, then Mikhail Pletnev. Compared to the others, Gould seems to give Haydn a heavy touch. At times he really pounds the keys hard! The music is ALWAYS compelling in his hands. Ax and Pletnev have a much softer almost "Chopinish" touch that to me, doesn't always work. Highly recommended!
Interesting recordings.......2004-08-02
Glenn Gould interest for Haydn was for many of his followers a weird challenge . Since Haydn piano music has always been ranked to intermediate priorities for the most of the pianists, his music has been somehow in a kind of zero atmosphere just waiting for someone who really loves his spirit.
The list is really reduced.
In the forties a spectacular hungarian pianist : Eddie Farnadi .
In the fifties , I remind two remarkable pianists: Nadia Reisenberg and Paul Badura Skoda.
In the sixties Backhaus.
In the early seventies , Malcom Frager . But in the last seventies and early eighties Andras Schiff recorded a very important series of Haydn piano works .
In this sense Gould decided to break the prejuices about the naifness about Haydn piano sonatas and certainly he played Haydn without that kind of affection so typical .
His performances became in a revelation . The frehness interpretative , the inherent humor sense , and the remarkable intention in considering a Haydn with his own musical stature and not viewed as a minor Mozart or a composer who belonged to a determined age .
These esthetic considerations affect in superlative degree the final product you play .
Consider for instance two brief examples . Are you sure about the Czerny sonata (Hilda Sommer)is just a minor work ? or the preschumannian sonata Op. 8 of Norbert Burgmuller (Adrian Ruiz) is just a classic and minor piece , only because Burgmuller lived only twenty six years? .
Gould accepted the challenge and won .
Acquire this set and you will be rewarded. Independently if you are a minor admirer about Haydn piano music. You will not be disappointed.
A Meeting of Musical Minds.......2004-05-28
This is my favorite Glenn Gould recording, as well as my favorite recording of any of Haydn's music. In a word, it is...Magical! This is also one of the best piano recordings I have ever heard. The joy, wit and humor of this music simply sparkle through your loudspeakers! You can't help but come away feeling enlightened and refreshed after listening to this disk. This is truly a "meeting of the minds". Although this recording is from the earliest days of digital, it sounds remarkable - whereas most digital recordings from this period sound like s**t. We are blessed that Glenn Gould was able to deliver to us this thoroughly enjoyable recording before his premature demise. I only wish that he had had the chance to record all of Haydn's piano sonatas.

Emanuel Ax obviously loves Haydn's piano sonatas. This is his second CD of them, and I wouldn't be surprised if he had to argue with his record company to make the discs; Haydn doesn't sell nearly as well as Mozart. But each of these sonatas is a genuine masterpiece, filled with imagination. And, frankly, quality aside, Haydn's piano sonatas are less predictable than Mozart's, less regular in form and quirkier. Ax plays the music fairly straight, expressively but without romantic mannerisms. This is a thoroughly enjoyable disc, and maybe if enough of us buy it Ax will be allowed to make another one. --Leslie Gerber
Customer Reviews:
Listen first...........2006-06-26
I read numerous rave reviews about this disc before I bought it.
The pieces are interesting and varied, the playing and recording quality is of course excellent, but...
...I don't enjoy listening to it that much, and it's one of those forgotten discs that gets pushed to the edge of the shelf. I don't know what it is. To my ear Ax's playing doesn't feel so sympatheitc, rather it seems to be more an intellectual exercise (that often bandied about criticism).
I don't know what the problem is - I have several discs of Haydn sonatas that I just enjoy more, for instance Jando's Volume 10 on Naxos, which is wonderful (the best of his volumes). But these are earlier, simpler sonatas, as compared to these later ones.
Maybe it's just my taste - there are certainly plenty of people out there who know their Haydn and like this disc, but I'm not one of them. Rather than say 'don't buy this', I'd instead urge potential buyers to listen to as much of it as they can first and then make up their minds.
AX CONTINUES HIS EXCELLENT HAYDN TRAVERSAL.......2000-12-01
I was very much impressed by Ax's genuine feel for Haydn in his first CD of sonatas, and the way he caressed the music. It all seemed perfectly balanced. My own love for Haydn's sonatas goes back years (and years). Raised on the old Vox Box sets, with Klien, Kyriakou, Galling, given to me by my father (may he be sitting next to Poppa Haydn somewhere in the celestial firmament), I could never find a pianist who duplicated the sonatas as I remembered them.
Until I heard Ax play.
Listen, for example, to his handling of the Adagio E Cantabile from Sonata No. 59 in E-flat, or the perky Allegretto from Sonata No. 32 in G Minor. This is radiant, love-filled playing that comes through absolutely.
If we keep our fingers crossed, maybe Sony will be smart enough underwrite a complete Haydn Sonatas series with Ax. This would be something worth waiting for!
Excellent, warm, comfortable sound, sans ambience. Highly recommended.

Album Description
It is not known exactly when Haydn composed three of these trios (27-29), but they doubtless belong to the greatest keyboard challenges among his piano trios. In 1796 Haydn composed his last trio, Hob. XV:30, which was also his last piano composition. It is considerably more concentrated in its motivic work than all its predecessors and the cantabile quality of the material is remarkable. On historical instruments, the Trio 1790 again presents the four compositions affectionately and with attention to the smallest detail.

Brisk refreshing renditions of well-worn repertoire.......2005-07-01
These works by Haydn are among the composers finest, in my opinion, although they seem to get much less attention his other major efforts in the area of chamber music, notably the string quartets. The most widely recommended recordings of these works are by the Beaux Arts Trio, who perform them using a modern piano string instruments. These performances recorded by CPO employ a forte piano and period string instuments. The more transparent texture produced by the old instruments gives these performances a more percussive, transparent texture which serves the music well, in my opinion. I recommend these recordings highly.

CONSPICUOUS ABSENCE.......2006-09-01
Released in 2003, after a nearly ten year hiatus, this third volume is what finally appears to be a bonafide Ax Haydn sonatas traversal; but, unfortunately, given the lapses in real time its completion may take decades. The upside to this is, however, the evolution of the artist and his perception of these works. In this latest recording, Ax eschews his former romantic proclivities and adopts a patently classical stance. Somewhat now restrained is the memorable sensitivity Ax brought to Haydn, the warm illumination and characteristic gentleness. Instead, the sonatas bristle, the playing articulate, manicured and direct. Through spare use of pedal, Ax delivers clean attacks and crisp execution, tending to propel the compositions with a somewhat austere virtuosity. This cool approach seems anomalous for Ax and, as well, Haydn. Distance does not, in this case, make the heart grow fonder. The recording, in addition, only accentuates what may be the artist's disappointing new preferences for frugal sonority, percussive staccato and stylistic objectivity.

Emmanuel Ax playing Haydn..........2004-05-18
I discovered this album via this year's Grammy Awards. Yes, I know these awards are sometimes politically motivated, but regardless, the sonatas and Emmanuel Ax' performance are wonderful and impeccable. The first movement of the 29th Sonata is a delight and like much of Haydn has some basis in Austrian folk songs. You hear that in Haydn anyway and this is a good example. Because he uses fewer notes than his wunderkind, Wolfgang Mozart, the tones seem more memorable and truer. I am buying the other two Ax performances of Haydn's sonatas a result.
