LOVELY SONGS SUNG BEAUTIFULLY

5 out of 5 stars The finest available!.......2002-08-29

For connoisseurs of Neapolian songs, these discs from Testament are golden, and no one sings these songs better than di Stefano. He has the charm and style in his delivery as few others have.
After hearing him in these songs, others may sound like mere pretenders. I can't recommend this disc highly enough if you like great singing and canzoni Napoli.

5 out of 5 stars Pippo's Biggest Fan.......2000-08-26

Now this is what I would call one beautiful CD.It shows that Pippo was the greatest tenor in the world during his reign. His voice is extremely beautiful and the warmth and emotionalism are incredible.I listen to his " Non T'amo Piu " endlessly. You just can't find singing like Pippo at his best even going back to Gigli. This CD is a must have for anyone even remotely interested in classical tenor voices. They don't meke them like Pippo anymore and fortunately his voice and style of singing will live forever with his many recordings.Do yourselves a big favor and buy this one.

5 out of 5 stars Great Normas On Record: Jane Eaglen.......2005-08-20

The current greatest Norma recording. There is also a studio recording with the same cast- Jane Eaglen, Vincenzo La Scola and Eva Mei and that one is outstanding as well. But this live recording from the Florence Festival in Italy benefits from a live performance in which the audience is genuinely caught up in the drama and the powerful performances from the singers. While the last review, the one before mine, was highly critical of Jane Eaglen, I will contradict and prove him wrong. Jane Eaglen has a hell of a time singing Norma, and is perfectly comfortable in the heavy dramatic role. It's perfect for her voice. She is more dramatic in her interpretation because as a long time singer for the English National Opera, she was well aware of English translations to operas. She has a huge, beautiful voice and she makes the role very noble and larger than life. I was blown away. From her solemn entrance: "Sedisioze Voce" to the ethereal strains of "Casta Diva" to the fury of the outcry "O Non Tremare" and the sad final aria, she is Norma without a doubt, even ranking high up there with the greatest Normas of opera- Maria Callas, Leyla Gencer and Montserrat Caballe. She is more in the Caballe fashion than the Callas fashion. She is well-supported by fine artists as mezzo soprano Eva Mei, who has a lyric and sensuous interpretation of Adalgisa (that's how Pellione fell for her, though I'm under the impression that he fell for her youth and sex appeal) Norma is an older woman with more wisdom and experience. Note the very interesting and funny scene in which Adalgisa confronts Norma about Pellione:

Norma: Go to Rome. Take Pellione. Take his children. I..I will kill myself for my transgression.

Adalgisa: I have to take care of his kids ?

Vincenzo La Scola is a fine tenor possessing a lyric and strong quality. Riccardo Muti, in excellent form, conducts a performance that was recorded live from the Florence Festival, Italy. It's a fine recording that anyone who wants to hear great opera should own. And yes, Jane Eaglen is amazing. Look also for her studio Norma, her Tosca (for the English National Opera) her Gotterdammerung, in which she sings Brunhilde, and her albums- Mozart and Strauss arias and Bellini and Wagner arias. She has owned the roles of Dona Ana, Isolde, Brunhilde, Tosca and Norma. And she's modest too and loves to listen to rock before actually singing on stage, so I hear.

2 out of 5 stars All wrong.......2004-01-30

Eaglen is perhaps the worst Norma on disc. Horrible coloratura, pinched high notes, lax phrasing and ZERO characteristation. (Compared to her Dame Joan Sutherland acts as wonderfully as Bette Davis!) Eaglen, a lyric soprano (Perfect for Mimi, Liu etc.) is pressed into those "huge" role because of her looks. BIG Isolde, Brünnhilde, Norma etc. which is ridiculous. Her last runs as Norma at the MET were disastrous. Mei is a lovely Adalgisa, hence the two stars.

4 out of 5 stars A passable Norma at a great price.......2001-05-12

This is not an exciting recording of Norma, but the price is great for a good cast that gives a decent performance. Missing is the passionate acting that one finds in Callas or Sills. Eaglen takes time to warm up so that Casta Diva, coming early in the opera, is a disappointment. She definitely sounds better as the opera progresses. If you're on a tight budget, this is not a bad rendition of Norma to own.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderfully done.......2001-04-24

This recording was my introduction to the work of Vincenzo Bellini. I feel it incumbent upon me to establish that, so that you do not assume me to be particularly versed in either his work, or the smorgasbord of recordings available. That established, Jane Eaglen's voice is by no means the equal of Sutherland or Callas, but she nonetheless carries the opera beautifully. Two factors guided me in the purchase of this recording: that it is a live recording (Florence, 1994), and also the comparatively reasonable price. For the price, this is a nearly unbeatable value: at any price, it is a fine recording, the sound quality leaves nothing to be desired, nor is it, as is often the case with such live recordings, cursed by poor microphone placement. This is a very fine production.

4 out of 5 stars The best of the current crop.......2001-03-17

At the outset, one has to say that if you want the mastery of Sutherland, the drama of Callas or the sheer beauty of Caballe, this recording will leave you dissatisfied. But take the time to listen to these singers: there is much here that is very rewarding. Eaglen certainly has sound, the stamina and the temprament to be a credible Norma. There are moments of real beauty in the "Casta Diva," and her intrepretation is never less than interesting. Mei is an excellent partner for Eaglen, and she can act with her voice. The tenor is new to me but I would be interested in hearing him in other roles: he holds his part of the ensemble up well. Muti is considerate of his singers, and keeps the pace up nicely. Without challenging the greats of the previous generation, this Norma is more than acceptable.

5 out of 5 stars The Italian tenor voice of rare beauty - Gigli in his prime........2001-03-27

There are at least three good reason for recommending this CD. Firstly, the years represented in this CD probably saw Gigli in his prime. Eager to communicate, and aware of the emotional content of each item, he has the Italian tenor voice of rare beauty. Unfortunately, these were also the Depression years, and even a best-selling artist like Gigli was invited into American recording studios on only three occasions in 1930 and never in 1931. Everything he recorded for Victor from 1929 to 1932 is here.

Secondly, the quality of the Mark Obert-Thorn restorations brings these items before us in best possible condition. To collect vintage Gigli recordings is to know that recent reissues have frequently been disappointing. The voice, in these recent reissues, is often both ill-focused and hard-edged. A comfortable listening experience is assured here.

Thirdly, this selection offers several previously unissued takes. Unpublished takes of the Bizet aria and the two Verdi trios are provided. In each case, a first take was unissued.

Combined with these recommendations is the fact that space has been found not only for 78 minutes of singing, and comprehensive notes, but also for a photo showing Gigli, Chaliapin and Tauber in close discussion, linking fingers and hands in front of a 78 metal master original.

Myung-Whun Chung established his Verdi credentials with an outstanding Otello that combined dramatic fervor with lyric delicacy. Those attributes categorize this performance of Verdi's late Sacred Pieces. Verdi conceived of the first three pieces as a dramatic unit--an a capella, gentle ode to the Virgin Mary flanked by a large-scale Stabat Mater and a Te Deum that recalls his great Requiem in scale and intensity. The fourth piece, tacked on by Verdi's publisher, is an austerely gentle and harmonically adventurous "Ave Maria." Chung adds two more Ave Marias, including Desdemona's from Otello, and concludes the disc with the "Libera me, Domine" originally written for a multicomposer commemorative mass for Rossini. Verdi later adapted the entire movement to his Requiem and it's fascinating to hear this first sketch for that terror-laden work. Here, it and the Otello aria are adequately sung by Carmela Remigio. Chorus and orchestra are first-rate, Chung masterful. --Dan Davis

Rosa Ponselle was one of the greatest sopranos of the century and this superb collection of recordings from her prime makes that evident. Some have long been the standards against which all others are judged--the Aida tomb scene with Giovanni Martinelli, the Norma "Casta Diva," and much else. Her famous Norma duet, "Mia, o Norma," with Marion Telvey is here, still striking sparks. Lots of Verdi--the big arias and duets from Aida, Trovatore, and Ernani, all sung in a big, stunningly beautiful voice alive to textual nuances. The arias from Spontini's La Vestale are wondrous, but so are the parlor songs, the 1920s "crossover" equivalents. Marston includes several alternate takes, and the transfers are excellent. This should be a cornerstone of any operatic collection. --Dan Davis

Right from the first few bars of this live recording, you know you are going to meet the Dirty Don in quite a new guise: the ominous opening bass notes are cut short, the tempo is astonishingly quick, there are surprising sforzandi (sudden sharp attacks), and everything feels urgent and breathless. Some people find the young conductor Daniel Harding too mannered, too eager to make a statement, but to this reviewer his unflagging energy and musical inventiveness are absolutely captivating. Everything is at the service of the drama, of communicating the emotions and the plot in the most effective manner possible. Just occasionally one wishes for him to linger a little longer over a phrase or dwell on an emotional statement, but the flip side of his speedy tempi is that the dramatic tension never lets up. The gifted young singers all palpably communicate their excitement at being part of this project, and operate with dramatic flair as an ensemble. A highlight? That would have to be Peter Mattei's meltingly erotic rendition of "Deh vieni alla finestra," which really has to be heard to be believed. --Warwick Thompson

              Customer Reviews:

              5 out of 5 stars A Review from ClassicsToday.com by Robert Levine.......2006-06-20

              Artistic Quality 8/8 Sound Quality

Whew! This may not be the most perfectly sung Don Giovanni available, but hands down it's the most exciting--more so than the Gardiner, which is more polished, and up there with the old, and somewhat old-fashioned Mitropolous on Sony. The Mahler Chamber Orchestra plays on modern instruments but with period timpani (which add great "thwap" and tension whenever they appear) and period brass (which makes Mozart's score buzz with agitation every time they show up). Twenty-three-year-old conductor Daniel Harding leads a furiously fast reading, with recitatives flying by at conversational speed. Indeed, these busy characters interact in what feels like real time (the recording is taken from a live performance, so there's plenty of dramatic give-and-take, and stage noises rarely get in the way). The final chord of the penultimate scene is held to a point of almost unbearable tension and the final sextet begins immediately on its heels. The effect is stunning.

In Peter Mattei (a Swede of Italian background, I believe) we have a Don as spontaneous and mercurial as we'd like. His light, Hampson-like baritone is agile and beautiful (even more than Hampson's), and vocally at least, he's a smooth actor, capable of both real seduction--in "La ci darem..." and the second act Serenade--and stupendous arrogance. He polishes off "Finch'an del vino" in 70 seconds and never backs down--rhythmically or tonally--even when faced with eternal damnation. The Leporello is Gilles Cachemaille, so superb with Arnold Östman on L'Oiseau-Lyre but even better here, singing with real bite. Mark Padmore's Don Ottavio is very light-voiced, but he focuses the tone right on the text and is very effective nonetheless (although Harding almost drives him crazy in "Il mio tesoro"). Till Fechner's Masetto is outraged but servile and Gudjon Oskarsson's Commendatore has great presence, even without a true booming-bass sound.

The women, aside from Veronique Gens' daring, offended, remarkably well sung Donna Elvira, are more problematic. Carmela Remigio's Donna Anna is nicely conceived and she has all the notes--even for the most challenging parts of "Non mi dir"--but the sound itself has little appeal. Lisa Larson's Zerlina strays from pitch often enough to be irritating. As suggested above, the playing of the orchestra is first rate (though a bit scrambly in very fast passages) and the 12-voice chorus has all the energy needed. I've played this set five times now, and while I keep wishing for more firmness from the two troublesome women (and a bit more heft from our Ottavio), I find this set irresistible.

5 out of 5 stars The most successful period version of Don Giovanni.......2006-02-20

I have owned period performances of Don Giouvanni from Gardiner, Mackerras, Ostmann, and Norrington, discarding each one after a few listens. This set under the rising young English conductor Daniel Harding from 1999 is far and away the best, for all the rasons given by other reviewers here: it's dramatically alive, youthful, and fresh.

The hidden little secret about most period conductors like Parrott, Hogwood, Norrington and Gardiner is that they aren't superior musicians (revealed the moment they step before a major non-period orchestra), but Harding has real ideas about Don Giovanni. Leaving aside the faster tempos and lean textures, his reading stands up musically to the best. I am enthusiastic about all the singers (smaller-voiced than usual), who take advantage of the smaller orchestra by sounding relaxed and dramatically alert. They are singing in their comfort zone, which is always a great advantage. The Don of Peter mattei is psychologically sly, nasty, wityt, and insinuating by turns; this singer obviously thrives on stage. In all, a veyr enjoyable surprise for this listener, who is mostly allergic to period practice.

4 out of 5 stars Seductive and invigorating music.......2005-09-05

Don Giovanni is a player, but he is a successful player. Hearing Peter Mattei sing "Deh vieni," I understand for the first time why so many women would fall for the Don. It is truly a seductive performance.

Another thing I like about this recording is the use of ornamentation. When Mark Padmore comes back to the primary theme of "Dalla sua pace," his caressing of the melody is a treat to the ear. It make me realize how singable Mozart's songs are; the singer can make them his own.

Conductor Daniel Harding is trying to shake the rust of centuries-old performance practice off this masterpiece. He achieves this by taking the tempos 10 to 20 percent faster than, say, Giulini. The effect is often enlightening and refreshing but it sometimes doesn't work. The act two finale sounds frenetic and unfocused and I think the dramatic intensity suffers.

For all the speed of the songs proper, the recitatives are strangely halt and start. It sounds like the dialog was done in slide show and I often find myself saying, "Get on with it."

A flawed treasure but a pleasure none the less.

              5 out of 5 stars Exceedingly fresh.......2000-12-07

This is a superb recording, taken from an exciting live performance that I would have loved to attend. It's a totally unconventional approach -- superfast tempos, mostly young, up-and-coming performers, and (based on the cover photo) a non-traditional, minimalist staging. Nevertheless, it's a wonderfully musical performance, and none of the interpretive decisions seem to have been made just for the sake of being different. Daniel Harding's conception of the whole is unified, not episodic, and I especially like Peter Mattei's Don Giovanni -- he has both the voice and obvious intelligence needed for the part. Although some others have complained about Veronique Gens' Donna Elvira, I actually liked her best among the three women. Her interpretation is somewhat coolly detached, less "emotional" than others' interpretations of the part, but it's still a valid approach, and very well sung.

Still, I'm not sure if this is the best choice for one's first purchase of the opera. If you've already got a recording, and want a fresh, new approach, then I say go for it -- get this one. On the other hand, it's so different from other performances that it's hard to tell whether this is going to stand the test of time. To play it safe, I'd go with the "classic" -- the Giulini version on EMI -- or maybe even the Gardiner version on Archiv.

              5 out of 5 stars Fascinating - eletrifying.......2000-11-21

I love it. I have most of Don Giovanni's on CD and this new comer is really up to the standard. I still wonder why people think the Giulini Version is the best. There is no best and this one is ranked amongst the best. Daniel Harding fast reading is electrifying and Carmela Remigio donna Anna is heartbreaking
