You have got to be kidding me. If you like modern music, especially music with a Brasilian beat, especially music that is progressive, especially music that is hip (and incorporates modern themes like rap), you will love this. This is particularly true of songs like Piercing and Meu Amour. Some of these songs have appeared before. But that's the beauty of this CD. It includes some of his best stuff. If you're looking for new Brazilian music with the same catchy harmonies and rhythms, you've found it.

You are just near the best Zeca Baleiro's album. He's a camaleon in the music, at same the same time creative, new and fun. We fell he does what he likes to do. That's not a commercial, that we listen one or two tracks in repeat mode for two days, and after we borrow the cd, and we never ask it back. Zeca Baleiro comes from a very interesting state from Brazil, called Maranhão in the northeast region of Brazil. In this region they have had the influence from differents cultures, slaves, Frenchs, portugueses, indians. And Zeca is the addition of all of that. A must. You will really feel like visiting differents cultures.

I first heard Zeca Baleiro while in a store that carries Putumayo cd's. "Meu Amor, Meu Bem, Me Ame" was so great that I had to buy the "New World Party" cd that very minute. The song's mesmerizing groove and his amazing bass voice left me dying for more, so i bought "Vo Imbola." I was NOT in the least disappointed! Baleiro's style is so ecclectic, but it stays true to it's Brazilian roots. This cd is great for Latin music lovers, or even for those just looking for a great musical ride.

The Very Best from The Very Best State of Brazil - Maranhão!.......2000-04-26

I am a big fan of Zeca Baleiro and this is one of his best albums. "Samba do Approach" is a good example of his creativity and versatility. The album has it all! Zeca Baleiro is the only artist I know that was able to combine the urban style with the northeastern rithms of Brazil without loosing his art essence. "Boi de Haxixe" brings up the folklore of Maranhão and is the poetic expression of a culture and a time that could only be capture by someone very sensible and passionate. I just love it !

Zeca Baleiro is one of the greatest innovators of the Brazilian popular music. Native of Maranhao, a northern Brazilian state, he brings a sweep of fresh air and exquisite craftsmanship into song writing and composition. He also updtates, in a highly original fashion, the songs of others great Brazilian composers of the past such as Luis Gonzaga and more recently Martinho da Vila. He mixes regional old instruments such as the "rabeca" (the violin's poor cousin, but giving out a striking sound) with electric guitars and punching bass guitar plus remarkably precise percussion for a fantastic and creative new sound. There is punch to this album, and also beautiful poetry. Recording quality is impeccable. Zeca Baleiro came to stay, and the Brazilian popular music will only get better with the addition of such an original artist. You're gonna stomp your feet and go dancing around when listening to "Semba", the 4th track of this excellent album, a modernized "frevo" from the northern state of Pernambuco in Brazil. Just this track is worth the album. Open your critical ears and listen to "Vô Imbola'", I am sure you'll enjoy it!

Nice music, but not the best album.......2004-12-31

It's a good choice specially if you want to listen a kind of different music. Zeca baleiro always try to do something diferent in each CD. He can visits many kinds of rythms, or simply use marvellous guitars chords. But this time, he got into the drum'n'bass, and starts to really explorer the electronic sound beat. Ok! He can do it but the result is not on the top. There are sometimes of pure magic. In fact I really liked the music Drumembeis, where he works the drum'n'bass mixed with a brazilian kind of song know as "embolada". If a reader of this review have been in the northeast region of Brazil, he knows what I'm talking about.
If you like Zeca, you must have this album, but don't expect the same guy writin' songs. If you don't know his work, maybe...

Zeca taught me Portuguese!.......2004-05-11

Wonderful Acoustic album. Songs like Comigo and Proibida pra mim are Brazil's answer to James Taylor or an up-beat Nick Drake. The big difference is the Brazilian flavor and the impeccable humor. One thing I love about Zeca is his good humor, at times it's even pretty silly. Yet the words are very poetic and clever. If you're an American who doesn't speak much portuguese (like me), but who wants to learn, buy this album. Satisfaction is garaunteed.
The first Zeca Baleiro song I ever heard was "nao tenho tempo" which is from another album (also wonderful), and I've been hooked ever since.
So take a chance on a guy who might not speak english, but speaks the language of music fluently.

In this album, Zeca Baleiro lets everybody confused about his music. Totally different of the two (even) dancing disks, Baleiro comes with acoustic tracks in this disk, and a brazilian surf music / rock band (Charlie Brown Jr) cover - Proibida pra Mim, getting to the music as another harmony and appearance.

We can see another great songs in this, like the loneliness song, "Blues do Elevador"; but Baleiro had better days.

Baleiro finds another texture in his music, a great disk, but too far away from the others.

Even more mature.......2001-01-29

I have been anticipating this cd since the day I played"Vo Imbola," which has a been a constant in my cdplayer. ... . I am incredibly pleased! Zeca, who was already a mature performer with "Por Onde Andara Stephen Fry," has somehow continued to evolve with both of the following albums. I was surprised by the number of acoustic tracks on "Liricas," because one of "Vo Imbola"'s strengths was Baleiro's ability to maintain artistic integrity while moving from genre to genre, style to style. However, he is an amazing acoustic musician, reminiscent of Bob Dylan or James Taylor, or more closely, Caetano Veloso. This is a beautiful album, even without as much samba as his two former albums.

When it comes to the artist, Zeca Baleiro is one of my absolute favorites. As I said, his ability to remain true to himself artistically and still be comfortable with any musical style is incredible. His lyrics are amusing when not profound, and always witty. I'm a [push over] for a bass voice, and Baleiro's got one of the most beautiful that I have EVER been fortunate enough to hear. ... .
