While Bongo Maffin's sound was a catchy mix of reggae, hip-hop, Afro-pop, urban grooves, and South African kwaito, band singer Thandiswa Mazwai is able to put her own stamp on a similar mix of ideas. Mazwai has been called the Mariam Makeba of her generation; she has a voice that's in a class with Zap Mama's Marie Daulne or the Les Nubians sisters. On Zabalaza she not only carves out a strong identity as a South African solo artist, she also proves that she's a talent of stunning versatility -- at times she's a dance-floor diva ("Kwanele" and the knockout "Ndizakulibala (I Will Forget You)," yet she can also play a jazz crooner ("Ntyilo Ntyilo") or a straight up gospel singer testifying for the whole parish to hear ("Revelation"). The album's title means "rebellion," and while she really isn't bent on burning her bridges here,­ the overlying aesthetic is definitely inclusion over exclusion. A snapshot of today's South African music.......2006-05-07

I'm a big fan of Thandiswa and love this CD. I spent some time in South Africa in 2004 and whenever I listen to this CD, it brings back wonderful memories. Thandiswa has a unique and captivating voice and style, and I look forward to her next release. I love the way she mixes English lyrics and her Khosa language and heritage.

Zabalaza is South African music at its best--it uses more traditional Xhosa music as the springboard for young urban sounds. All across the country this album has been at the top of the radio station's charts for over a year, and continues to dominate. The best tracks are Zabalaza, Nizalwa Ngobani, Lahlumenze, and Kwanele And they run a range of styles.

And the woman's deep. She sings about the problems in SA society, and speaks directly to youth in both Xhosa and English--her songs are almost a textbook for living for young people.

Buy this album if you want to know what actual South Africans are listening to (and loving), rather than the watered-down stuff what's mostly on the shelves of record stores on that side of the Atlantic.

More kwaito less R&B.......2006-02-13

I wish we could get more Kwaito over here in the US. I love Kwaito and South African house- but if I wanted to listed to poor imitations of American mainstream R&B artists, I would...well I guess I just wouldn't.

B.O.P at its best.......2003-01-18

This album features a rare fuse of beats and instrumentation the world has never heard before. Its a number 1 slammer and all the tracks are mixed back-to-back for a continuous enjoyment of South Africa at its best. Features south african soccer fans' horns, blended with afro beats, some jazzy house (Molelekwa on keyboards [R.I.P]) and latin type with a classy touch of kwaito. Excellent work!!...
