This is a good collections of smooth vibes. The first track pulls you in but the other tracks range from good to ok next track. Still a good addition to my collection. Vol. 2 makes up for what this lacks.

the best introduction to naked music.......2006-07-03

Bare Essentials Vol. 1 contains many of Naked Music's classics making it an essential purchase for anyone who enjoys deep house. By now, I would assume most people are familiar with the naked music sound, but just incase, here's my take: jazzy arrangements, clean, clear production, lush textures, latin percussion, straight ahead dance beats, and of course, amazing female vocal work. Of course some songs and artists vary from this formula, but overall, it fits their style quite well. The music is uniformly positive and uplifting. It's typically laid back, but almost always encourages dancing. Sound good? It is.

Bare Essential's is a great introduction to this sound and style. If the term "house" scares you, don't worry - this isn't more of the rather dubious trash that people have come to associate with house music. The music is equally good for listening and relaxing. Some have accused Naked Music of putting out compilations of tracks that all sound exactly the same. Rather, Naked Music has a voice, a style that works and the artists tend to use it as a point of departure. True, most of the tracks have a four-on-the-floor dance groove, but so does pretty much all techno. Nothing wrong with techno (I love Jeff Mills, Derreck May, and Underground Resistance as much as anyone), but this is not nearly as repetitive as techno fans are used to. Besides that, the music just sounds good. It's fun, it's light (but not lightweight), and is great for parties. If you're a fan of electronic music, you will surely enjoy this introduction to the Naked Music sound.

I hate to review this album and say what's been said before but I have to. This is a CD you MUST own if you like sexy house music. You can call this one downtempo lounge, midtempo, deep house, or whatever you want to call it... It doesn't matter. One thing is for sure: IT IS SEXY. This is a beautiful selection of HOUSE tracks you can chill to, SMOKE to, drink to, think to, make love to (of course), and dance to. You'll find here flutes, strings, funky bass, housy beats, and very sexy vocals that make this compilation a must have if you're into quality electronic music.

It is not perfect, but it is quite good.

Good deep house.......2005-02-27

This is a good CD for those starting out or to further flesh out a collection. My favorite is the Attaboy remix of Surrender.

Strong CD.......2004-08-02

Very good CD, doesn't flow as much as some of the other Naked Music cd's but still a nice vibe and laid backness to the CD that actaully gets better with every listen.

This is an unusual offering for the New York funk/jazz/hip hop outfit, recorded in Istanbul in consortium with local combo Laco Tayfa. Already adept at fusing funk, reggae, Latin, and jazz in their mix, Funk Essentials here add Turkish rhythms and instruments like the kanun, oud, zuma, and clarinet, usually just for color in the dance groove. When things work, as on the title track, it's a highly successful marriage, but at times it is a little forced. The material strays to a couple of sappy "urban contemporary" ballads, but luckily Buzz Bag is generally upbeat, and the band's inherent musicality, humor, and intelligence keep things afloat. The most interesting tracks are the ones that carry the most Turkish influence, but generally this is less a World Summit than a Nu Kultural Flava. --Derek Rath

BFE and Laco Tayfa made a great synthesis of Turkish tunes and NY beats. It is so much fun to listen to the fusion between two cultures.
I bought it after listening to the 2 groups live in Istanbul (which was incredible) and have been listening to it since then (since 2000)...

Very disappointing.......2002-03-30

I bought "Cool and Steady and Easy" (BFE's previous album) and loved it; that album showed that BFE could work in lots of different genres with skill and a lot of wit. So, I was excited when this album first came out.

I shouldn't have been. The collaboration with the Turks is interesting at first, but gets old very quickly. The songs all sound alike, and don't have the hooks and twists that "Cool and Steady and Easy" had. The rhythm is particularly bad--same drum segments, over and over, not even the slightest variation. I would say a definite 180 degrees from "Cool..", where jazzy horn solos were followed by a hilarious reggae exposition on a social revolution delayed by, well, just being tired.

So, if you're looking for a first album to buy from BFE, pick up "Cool..."--that one's a winner. If you're a total addict, okay, you might like this release. I'm kinda picky, and deserved better from this otherwise creative band.

Darmush-var.......2000-08-19

Love the cover art--great pic of a dolmush, the old communal taxis that take their name from dolma, which is a stuffed grape leaf. Love the Turkish instruments and the funky blend of cultures. Not my favorite BFE cd, but then I love all BFE cds, they make a great accompaniment to a ride across the Chihuahua desert under a full moon, dreaming of oh-so-sweet chai on a faded kilim spread by the banks of the Aegean, or swimming in the phosporescent pools of Pammuk Kale. Bring on da funk; brink on the Turkish charms.

What can I say about it that hasn't been said already. What can I say to anyone that hasn't heard the great vocality of this CD...all I can and want to say is that it's refreshing, it's renovating and it's the link that Turkey needs to make to the western world. If Turkish politics would follow this example of blending western and ancient music and would apply this on their political behaviour, Turkey would have a bright future. For now, it's only the CD to enjoy...and for now that's more than enough.....

Great Job!.......1999-12-25

I like this album very much. The balances of instrumets is really good. I like its sound and I can feel the groove. I got never bored listening it. The band worked with gypsy musicians in Turkey. Most of the Turkish melodies used are real classics in Turkey. I can say they don't create much about Turkish music but they really mixed it quite good with funk and jazz.

A must have for Denny fans.......2006-08-12

As Denny Tsettos fans in the NYC metropolitan area know, he knows how to put music together and rip it apart. This two CD set is no exception. Disc one has a dark underground feel, highlights include WMC burners Electro & The Rub. Disc two is a very smooth house vibe, Denny really starts working the mix with the remake of "Walking On Sunshine" by Rockers Revenge and continues the journey ending with Maverick and Thoneick's slamming remake of Love Sensation.

After seeing Denny at Nikki Beach in Miami, I wanted more Denny. This guy knows how to pump up a crowd. Ive been to clubs all over the world and when I say Denny is among the best Ive seen I mean it. Then I got "Club Essentials" which I was skeptical to get at first because usually mix cd's don't have the same energy as a live performance. Man was I in for a surprise. When I first popped his cd in at my cousin's 21st everyone got pumped up. I felt like I was back at Nikki Beach. Denny gives us what all mix cds should, a great mix for a party and the feeling of being at a club. Denny drives hard with this one. I recommend it to anyone who is a fan of pumped up house music.

This is one fascinating CD. The sounds are housey but they are not at the same time. Fast paced and beautiful with charming vocals on some and hypnotic grooves on many of the others. I work out to it all the time and I really don't know how to describe it other than genius.

Endeavor primed right for an early-AM candlelight comedown.......2001-11-26

Making minimal, moody instrumental house, you ride a fine line between skillfully stripped down compositions and lifeless beat loops. Swedish duo YMC (by way of Deep Dish label Yoshitoshi Recordings) carefully avoid that trap - boring us - by packing each elongated piece with minute flutters and flares that subtly enhance their ideas.

Lively and lovely, "Bluesless" proves breathtaking, snips of sax and chimes floating around a forlorn, rippled vocal. "Nightlife", with low-key shine and ambient dips, soothes like an aural bubble bath. The remaining tracks don't always match these moments, yet the full seventy-five minute effect of minor chords, simmering beats, and percolating semi-peaks ("Morning Lake") form an artist endeavor primed so right for an early-AM candlelight comedown. Well done.
