Amazon.com essential recording
The only element of sophomore slump in Steely Dan's second album was the disappointing sales response upon its initial release in 1974. Musically, Countdown to Ecstasy is even stronger than the Dan's terrific debut, pushing the musical envelope with more complex jazz harmonies and intricate time signatures, and carrying their lyrics into even more shadowy realms peppered with sci-fi imagery and street-level slang. The songs are stunning, from the opening blast of "Boddhisattva," a Zen boogie fueled by Denny Dias's and Jeff Baxter's angular, bopping guitars, to the postnuclear apocalypse of "King of the World." In between, they deliver the one-two punch of "Show Biz Kids," with its perfect snapshot of affluent decadence, and "My Old School," in which college daze is remembered through a collision of staccato guitar and blazing horns. --Sam Sutherland

Your Introduction to Steely Dan..........2007-06-12
...should be with this album. My dad gave me this album as one of my first tapes when I was younger. The music is so brilliant, one can throw the tape in and just let it continuously play. This is exactly what an album should be like. I only got the cd because the tape eventually burnt out.
my 2nd favorite steely dan album........2007-03-26
spent most of my teen years in the 70's, and always enjoyed hearing steely dan on the radio, but, for some reason, i neglected their albums. that changed when my favorite magazine, "mojo," ran a feature in their august 1995 issue, listing the 100 greatest albums ever made. steely dan's "countdown to ecstasy" was listed at number 13! i had no idea that they were so highly regarded. promptly I went out and bought a bunch of steely dan albums. "can't buy a thrill" is my favorite, but "countdown to ecstasy," is hot on its heels. the sheer craft with which this band puts together albums is a cause for admiration. they construct albums like jane austen constructs novels, with consummate expertise. "my old school," is the standout track for me on this recording, but everything here is fresh and inventive, with jazz shadings and plenty of guitar wizardry on display. a classic album for sure.
Ecstasy!.......2007-03-01
Finally got this album recently, and was knocked out by it. I already knew the famous tunes (Bodhisattva, My Old School, Show Biz Kids), but was unprepared for the excellence of "King of the World", "Boston Rag" or "Your Gold Teeth." Great production: clean and crisp, but never fussy. For someone who was originally so unsure of his vocal abilities that he brought in another singer for the first album, Fagen finally comes alive as a great soul vocalist on "Countdown."
Still the Best!.......2007-02-23
This album is not only the best Steely Dan album ever, but one of the best albums by anybody ever. One of my all-time favorites, particularly "Bodhisattva" which had me ROFL in a Zen-like way back in 1973 and still knocks me out. Love it, love it, love it.
For those with ears, a brilliant album.......2006-09-02
Becker and Fagan state in the liner notes that this music was written specifically with these personnel in mind, and to me, this makes a huge difference-- Steely Dan was still a BAND at this point, and there is an organic sense of unity to this album that all the hot-licks- spewing studio A-list hotshots could never re-create. Also, there is a much more varied stylistic palette. I just bought this on cd having not owned it since getting rid of all my vinyl 15 years ago. I mostly listen to Jazz these days, and was astonished when I first unwrapped the cd and played it. What a feast of musical riches! By comparison, I find the suceeding albums progressively increasing in blandness (except for Royal Scam, which somehow managed to temporarily buck the trend) as Fagan and Becker embraced a sort of homogenized yuppie cocktail music with quirky lyrics, faultlessly executed, but totally lacking in humanity or heart. Yes, the chord changes are "jazz-y", but Aja ain't Jazz-- it's way too processed and overly groomed. There's no spontaneity-- it's dead on arrival and there's a distinct hollowness underlying the chops that for me, makes it ultimately very empty. "Countdown" predated this cynical descent into the pop-fusion-lite vortex. It's a terrific album that still sounds fresh and richly musical. Check it out!

Yikes!.......2007-05-28
My husband and I come from musical backgrounds and listen ALL types of music. When we first played this (and it will be the LAST time) we couldn't stop laughing at the overblown, derivative 'big hair' sound of this band. This band sounds like they were attempting to copy Queen, the Scorpions, etc. The drumming is boring and basic, the guitar sounds like every band from the 80's: carpal tunnel inducing generic shred. The lyrics sound like they were written using "Formulaic Lyrics That Sound Like They Mean Something 101". And if the singer sang 'WhoaOHOHOHOHOHOaaaaaaa' once, he must have sang it a zillion times. Maybe he was in pain. I know we were after listening to this...
An enjoyable piece of work.......2007-04-17
In general, The Final Countdown--from the Swedish band Europe--is one of my favorite albums. Back in early 1987, I was captured after being exposed to the impressive video for "The Final Countdown." Later, I was given the cassette, then got the CD, and finally procured this remastered CD edition (which was put out in 2001). Originally, The Final Countdown--Europe's third full-length album--was released in 1986. It displays regal-sounding, finessed qualities. It is obvious that the group put a lot of time into the creation of this piece of work, with its catchy hard rock. Pleasing songwriting, solid musicianship, and polished sound quality are in evidence. In addition to the original ten tracks, this remastered CD version sports three extra bonus live cuts which come from a concert at the Hammersmith Odeon in London, England during 1987: "The Final Countdown," "Danger on the Track," and "Carrie." One of the things that I like about this album is how well the guitar and keyboard playing work in combination. John Norum's guitar work is skilled, and his guitar solos are nicely tailored, melodic, and memorable. Keyboardist Mic Michaeli lays down some nice sounds on the proceedings, too; also, he provides keyboard solos on "Danger on the Track" and "Cherokee." A notable singer, Joey Tempest provides tenor vocals that are not only soaring and engaging, but also industrious. The songs that I favor are "The Final Countdown" and "Carrie." Endowed in stateliness, "The Final Countdown" is a special composition because of its majestically great keyboard line, supplied by Michaeli, and Norum's sprightly, never-to-be-forgotten guitar solo (one of my favorite guitar solos, in general). "Carrie" is a pretty power ballad exhibiting expressively smooth vocals from Tempest and Norum's passionate-sounding, indelible guitar solo. "On the Loose" is an example of another track that I enjoy; it is a rousing hard rocker that contains a meticulous, fleet-fingered guitar solo from Norum. When it comes to the CD packaging, the CD booklet includes various photos of the group--except for a color one, the rest are black and white--an informative essay, and the song lyrics. The back of the CD jewel case displays a color photo of the band in concert and a snippet of the essay that is featured in the CD booklet. The run time of the CD is just over 54 minutes. The original material makes up just over 40 minutes of this, and the bonus live songs amount to almost 14 minutes. The Final Countdown is a recommendable album.
Still Kickin.......2007-01-17
This album still holds up today because a lot of millenium culture was so similar to the 1980s. It's supposed to be the future, so no 50s teen idols. No teen idols. No Britney Spears. They're queer. These guys are high class. I recognized it was all in Swedish- Swedish lyrics, made in Sweden, recorded in Sweden. Not really the bad taste of the 80s, that was more like the 3 wheeler or Twisted Sister. Cool without being geeky. Cocaine culture was glam and exotic. This album is kind of exotic. On the first side, the first three tracks still hold up and the rest of the album is just as good. Carrie was a big hit. The title track was used in a Pepsi commercial. I know, guys there's a bit of an age differance you should be middle aged now, but this album is still pretty cool.
Remastered Classic.......2006-11-28
Released in 1986, the Final Countdown is the third album from Swedish rockers Europe. To call it a breakthrough album would be a major understatement. The Final Countdown sold millions of copies worldwide and made Europe one of the era's biggest bands. To this day you can't attend a major sporting event without hearing the song "the Final Countdown" in the closing minutes. This is the song and album that made me a Europe fan for life.
It's may also be the band's weakest album.
Hear me out. 20 years after its release it is possible to look at the Final Countdown objectively in comparisons to Europe's other albums. Sales figures aside, the Final Countdown followed what is arguably the band's best album - 1984's Wings of Tomorrow (I say arguably because I sometimes think 1991's Prisoners in Paradise may be the best thing the band has ever released). Instead of a natural progression, the Final Countdown took a sharp turn into hair metal/arena rock territory, amping up the keyboards, power ballads, and of course the hairspray. There's no denying that the move paid off, but musically it resulted in a weaker overall album.
That's not to say it's a bad album. It still has plenty of great songs, like Rock the Night, Time Has Come, Heart of Stone, and of course the Final Countdown, which to this day has to be considered THE Europe song. It also has some weaker, if not downright silly moments, like Ninja, Danger on the Track, and the weepy ballad Carrie. I should probably add Cherokee to that list, but it's so darned catchy I can't bring myself to do it.
The Final Countdown will always hold a special place in my heart, but looking back it's plain to see that the albums released just prior and soon after it are better efforts. It still deserves a 4-star rating for what the album did for the band, and what it meant to me as a kid.
A remastered version of the Final Countdown was released in 2001. In addition to the much appreciated digital remastering, the CD includes three live tracks - The Final Countdown, Danger on the Track, and Carrie. I'm certainly glad there is a remastered version of the Final Countdown available, but I can't help wishing they would give the rest of Europe's back catalog the same treatment.
Sorry, but...........2006-08-22
Europe is just boring, commercial glam rock drivel. They are a very poor representative of the Euro-metal sceen. (I use the term "metal" loosely). The band are OK musicians, while the songwriting is pure, radio-targeted greed.
If you want to listen to some good metal from Europe (the continent, that is) check out King Diamond, Mercyful Fate, Children of Bodom or Meshuggah. Final Countdown is just the worst of 80's excess.

Foreclosure of a Dream.......2007-07-11
Many Megadeth fans prefer "Rust in Peace" and "Peace Sells But Who's Buying" but this Megadeth is the best-selling album. This is also one of the heaviest Megadeth album, there's only the title track that is quite peaceful. The album has some great moments with "Skin o' My Teeth", "Symphony of Destruction", "Sweating Bullets", "Ashes in Your Mouth", "High Speed Dirt", and "Psychotron"...excellent strange lyrics in every song and also great hard heavy metal riffs. "This Was My Life" is my favourute song in this album. Dave Mustaine's voice is very deep and he can do the song very good. "Foreclose of a Dream" has quite peaceful moments too but this is quite little.
Stars: This Was My Life, Sweating Bullets, Symphony of Destruction, Architecture of Aggression, Ashes in Your Mouth
Original = Good, Remix = Poor.......2007-06-17
I own both the original and the remixed/remastered version. The original is no "Rust in Peace", but it's still a pretty good album. I give the original 4 stars. However, the mix on the first album is perfect and the remix ruins many of the songs. It's hard to put in technical terms, but it just doesn't sound right. One problem is that it sounds like each instrument is playing a different song. Things just don't "fit" anymore. Also, the album also sounds less intense than the original. Usually with remasters (though not always remixes), the newer version sounds heavier. It's not all bad though. I kind of like the new intro to "Sweating Bullets". I prefer the original intro to "Captive Honour", but the new intro is still a somewhat interesting alternative.
The only other "remixed and remastered" version I've heard is "So Far, So Good...So What!". Although people complained about that one too, I actually liked the new version. This, however, is far worse than the original.
If you haven't heard the album before, then hunt down the original. If you have it already and are a serious fan, then you should pick this version up for the "Crown of Worms" bonus track. It's no classic, but it's pretty good and fits in well with the album. The three demo tracks are no good, but "Crown of Worms" makes it a worthwhile purchase if you're a serious fan.
Dave's a big fibber........2007-06-04
Beware! If you have the original recording of this album, do not --repeat--DO NOT get rid of it. While it's stated on the case that it was remixed and remastered, it's become obvious to me that certain parts have been re-recorded as well. I can't speak for the vocal or guitar parts but the drum tracks, I'm fairly certain, have all been re-recorded. I'm a drummer with incredibly sensitive ears. I'm also intimately familiar with Nick Menza's work on this album (great work, too) and I can say without hesitation that he's not the person who played on this remix. Whoever it was is pretty good at imitating him but not perfect. I'm not sure why Dave would do this--maybe he wasn't able to get the sound he wanted from the original tracks. Whatever. Nice try, Dave. Download the extra songs off of I-tunes or something but avoid the rest of this one and find the original.
One of Megadeth's Best Albums.......2007-04-15
I bought Megadeth's 1992 effort "Countdown to Extinction (their 5th album overall) about 5 years back when I was a senior in high school, and this was the first Megadeth album I ever got into, and I suddently became a fan instantly. Then I would go on to buy other Deth classics such as "Rust in Peace", "Peace Sells But Who's Buying", "Killing is my Business, and Business is Good", "So Far, So Good, So What", and so forth. Sure "Countdown to Extinction" is not an all out thrash assault like their previous classics, but this album is Megadeth all the way through, and it's one of their best albums of all time as well. Frontman Dave Mustaine (who also has great vocals on here) is no doubt one of heavy metal's greatest and legendary guitarists of all time. Second guitarist Marty Friedman also rules on the guitar as well. You've got tons of great catchy riffs and awesome ripping solos from both Dave and Marty. David Ellefson has great heavy bass lines that will make your walls shake, and there's nice solid drumming courtesy of Nick Menza. The opeining track "Skin O'My Teeth" is a great addicting opener that starts off with a short but sweet drum solo then some catchy guitar riffs come in to play. The chorus is pretty catchy and the solo by Marty is great. "Symphony of Destruction" is one of the band's greatest songs ever written, and remains a true classic. Words can't describe how much I love that song. "Architecture of Aggression" is another classic which starts off with the sounds of war and gunfire, and is soon followed by some chugging riffs and heavy bass. This is a very political song too. Track four and of my all time favorite songs on here "Foreclosure of a Dream" is a sad and tragic look at the death of the American Dream and it also tells about the rise and fall of politics and economics. It also includes the famous "Read My Lips" speech from George Bush Sr. "Sweating Bullets" is another one of my favorites on here which includes a nice steady drum beat, some nice slow catchy riffs, a nice killer solo from Dave, and some pretty entertaining lyrics as well. "Pyschotron" is another favorite of mine in which I believe includes seven killer solos which were all done by Marty. Track ten "Captive Honour" lyrically tells about the prison system and the consequences of crime. There's also a mid song skit in where a judge and jury sentences a man to life in prison included as well. Great solos by Dave and Marty BTW. "Ashes in Your Mouth" is a great album closer with some good tempo changes, great fast riffs, killer solos, and a sick fast drum solo near the end. A great way to end the album. Every song rules, but the ones that I mentioned are my favorites. Please read on for the entire song list and the ratings (please note that the ratings on here apply to the original version of this album that I own)

Like I said before "Countdown to Extinction" may not be an all out speed/thrash fest like "Rust in Peace" or "Peace Sells But Who's Buying", but it's still Megadeth all the way, and if you're an open minded metalhead like myself, you'll definately love this album. If you don't have this album already, you are definately missing out on some great metal man. Overall highly recommended for fans of Megadeht, metal, or just good music in general.
ALL HAIL DAVE MUSTAINE!!
ALL HAIL MEGADETH!!
Also be sure to look for Megadeth's upcoming new release "United Abominations" on Roadrunner which will be coming out next month in May. Well Later Dudes.
Countdown To Extinction........2007-03-26
Following the lead of Metallica's Black album Megadeth have tried the same only with different results, this album showed the more commercial and mainstream sound that they continued to use throughout the 90's. Despite all of this Countdown To Extinction still rocks and still has a certain heaviness to it, some of my favorite songs are on this album including Symphony of destruction (this has the best lyrics for a Megadeth song ever), Skin O' my teeth, Foreclosure of a dream, Sweating bullets and Psychotron these are among the band's best. Even though there wasn't much to improve upon with the re-mastering that Dave did I still thought that the sound quality was good and there were some nice bonus tracks like Crown of worms. Countdown was a major turning point in Meagadeth's career as it was a huge success and it was a change from the heavy metal and thrash to a hard rock and metal album, they've slowed down a bit while not as good or perfect as Rust In Peace this album is excellent and shows Megadeth at thier best, I highly recommend this.

Megadeth is one of the few metal bands to have successfully handled the transition to the '90s, and Countdown to Extinction is proof positive; although considerably more streamlined and commercially oriented than their previous efforts, it's still a fine album, and arguably one of their best. Lead singer and guitarist Dave Mustaine's lyric-writing has improved, and the results can be heard on "Countdown to Extinction," "Symphony of Destruction," "Architecture of Aggression" (it's a rare songwriter who can make a line like that fit in a chorus), and "Foreclosure of a Dream". This is arena metal at its best; Countdown to Extinction (a reference not to genocide, as one might assume, but to endangered species) manages the difficult trick of being commercially appealing and musically sound at the same time. -- Genevieve Williams

get their greatest hits and maybe a couple others and stay away from the rest. mustaine's music/lyrics all sound very similiar. best MEGADETH song of all time is symphony of destruction.
Masterpiece #2.......2007-06-06
In a world where many bands trundle away for years without ever having an utter masterpiece (Gamma Ray, Primal Fear, Exodus etc etc etc) Mustaines machine produced two such albums back to back. After Rust in Peace blew most of the competition out of the water the band unleashed this. Once again Megadeth have steered clear of hysterical thrash to construct metal of the most pure alloy. Countdown is a batch of songs that are different to the tunes on Rust.. - which makes it's quality even more of an achievement and a track by track synopsis would be;
1- Skin of My Teeth:- A blasting opening tune of metallic fury with aggression, written from the point of view of someone quite obviously unhinged with a bit of gore thrown in for good measure.
2- Symphony of Destruction:- A slow burn metal number, not a personal ode such as the first track was. In fact it addresses a more general and darker concept applicable to corporate as well as government organisations.
3- Architecture of Aggression:- A direct follow on from the previous track in terms of being a cynical look at power and it's corrupting influence. High brow concept with killer execution.
4- Foreclosure of a Dream:- Apparently inspired by Dave Ellefsons parents having the band foreclose on their property, this is mentally very heavy stuff. Musically the chorus rides a tasty groovy in direct juxtaposition to what the song is about.
5- Sweating Bullets:- On this tune Megadeth have continued the slower structures prevalent on much of this album. It explains the subject of mental illness and the protagonist is a slightly nastier type of person than the narrator of Anthrax' Madhouse tune. Not a tune for the mentally feint of heart.
6- This Was My Life:- Yet more mental disintegration though you don't necessarily want it to stop. Introspection here from the point of view of a killer but whereas in '85 Mustaine probably would of spiced it up with some gore or just brutality here he throws in the angle of the killers crime being the result of passion which adds a human dimension to proceedings.
7- Countdown to Extinction:- The title track to the album addresses hunting, extinction and conservation themes and rails against senseless killing. Nuff said.
8- High Speed Dirt:- A less intellectual tune here, this track is in posession of perhaps the most syncrhomeshed guitar work on the album and is a straight ahead metal stomper. Which by this stage of proceedings is a welcome relief.
9- Psychotron:- More blazing metal here as the band blast through a semi sci-fi number with, once again, mental illness undertones. A song with a clipped musicaly style that speeds along to it's conclusion.
10- Captive Honor:- A look at imprisonment and unlike the idiotic gangsta rap genre here Megadeth look down at both the criminal and the dehumanising gaol experience with no sympathy for either party.
11- Ashes in Your Mouth:- Probably the least impressive tune on the album, as the title implies it's an anti-war diatribe.
All up this Mustaine + Max Norman produced album isa strong challenger for best Megadeth album, one of 92's best hard albums and pretty much universally regarded as a metal classic. And for good reason.
Countdown To Extinction.......2007-04-24
Megadeth-Countdown To Extinction ***
This is not your older brothers Megadeth. No this is the rebirth of the band. For Countdown To Extinction the band went for more of a hard rock mainstreem sound rather then their previous thrash metal sound of their earlier records. Dave Mustain and Marti Freidmen play some of the greatest guitra of their careers here though that is for sure. Mustain would hate me for saying this but this album is to Megadeth what the self titled black album is to Metallica.
The album opens with a killer track called 'Skin O My Teeth' which features a face melting guitar solo. An excelent way to start off the album, it really sets the pace for the rest of the record. 'Symphony Of Destruction' is one of the bands biggest and best known songs. The song is incredible featuring one of the freatest guitar solos in all of rock history, just fantastic. 'Architecture Of Aggression' is another great song. Very simular to 'Skin O My Teeth though. 'Foreclosure Of A Dream' is actually one of Megadeths all time best songs. Great time changes, a nice acoustic inro, interesting lyrics, the songs a sure win. 'Sweating Bullets' is an interesting song. It is also one of the bands best known songs. The pschitzofrinic lyrics are scary as hell, which makes for a killer song. 'This Was My Life' while is a great song but because it come after such a classic as 'Sweating Bullets' it suffers a little, it leaves you wanting more. 'Countdown To Extinction' the title track, is good but could be a whole lot better. The main guitar riff makes the song sound like a really bad and really slow power-metal song, like a demo to a Yngwie Malmsteen song. The album would have been better off with out it. 'High Speed Dirt' is another throw away, there is nothing high speed about this song. 'Psychotron' is only saved by the guitar and other wise it is actually pretty boring. 'Captive Honour' is also quite boring and features some spoken word clips and that also takes away from the song. You can feel that the song could be really good but it is missing something. 'Ashes In Your Mouth' is a great song, and probably the best song to close the album. If there were more songs like it on the album then the album would be a whole lot better. This is a great song that leaves you wanting more when it is finished and not it a bad way.
It seems that the band lost focus about half way through the album. The first half of the album is excellent, but the second half is just boring really. This is concidered one of the bands better albums and I dont see why. The songs that are goo dare really, really good so maybe that is what everyone is comparing it by, but honestly the band has many better albums so this could be added to your collection, but you will be fine with out it to be honest.
Anyone who likes metal and doesen't like this album is going telent deaf.......2006-12-12
One of the best. This owns metallica black album in every way. Truly great classic Megadeth songs, lyrics, and riffs. Get this now if you like Megadeth, one of their best albums.
Tight is ..as tight does.......2006-08-23
I love it when some people give a review of a CD and compare it to something else.. as if the CD they are reviewing didnt sound enough like their favorite band(s) or something along those lines. PFFTOOEY!
I have had this CD for the last 10 years or so, and although heavy metal as I knew it has pretty much gone by the wayside .. this CD continues to be one of my all-time favorite HM CD's, one which I still listen to. Before buying this CD, I had already owned KISB and SFSGSW.. and was a little surprised at how this music went a bit towards the mainstream. That was until I heard the CD all the way through. The guitars-drums-bass are so tight it makes me wonder if they had to redo some of the songs over and over until they got it right..PERFECT even. I consider this CD a HM masterpiece. Megadeth was able to take their music and make it tighter without giving up their musical identity.
I could care less who they DONT sound like.

Keiko Matsui's "Full Moon and the Shrine".......2003-01-19
Around 6 months ago, my dad got me this CD. Since he knew that I like piano music, he got it, even though he had never heard of Keiko Matsui in his life. That was an incredibly lucky guess. I admit that I was surprised at how good this CD was. The music on it is a nice blend of easy listening with a pinch of jazz. It is the type of CD that, no matter how repetitive it gets, you really like anyway. In my opinion, the way that the songs are put together is very creative.
In short, if you like easy listening and/or contemporary music, get this CD. If you like jazz, but don't like the other 2 genres, then don't even think about it.
PURE BEAUTY.......2001-10-19
I was given FULL MOON AND THE SHRINE as a gift months ago and appreciate it more as time passes. I love the way special music like this grows in my heart. This is an awesome composition from start to finish. FULL MOON AND THE SHRINE is a crescendo of emotion. It begins in purity and ends in purity; but in between, it offers the listener the full spectrum of the rainbow. Its sum total is ALL. What a lovely, eclectic blend of sounds! Lovers of jazz and new-age instrumental music are sure to be pleased. Its eclectism lends, at the same time, eccentricity. You may ask, "How can FULL MOON AND THE SHRINE be both eclectic and eccentric?" Listen and you will understand.
Soar my friends,

This CD is wonderful. It is very soothing. You can use it for massage or just for easy listening. I love to hear it while I am driving. It puts me in a very peaceful mood.
Beauty.......2001-07-01
Keiko Matsui has produced many albums, but this album is by far my treasured piece. CDs lose my interest after a few months of repeated listenings, but Full Moon and the Shrine has continued to be fulfilling listening. No weak songs exist in this album, and they flow together well.
Full Moon and the Shrine is addicting........2001-03-03
I always thought jazz was kind of boring, although I can see some redeeming qualities in it. But this CD combines jazz with new age and is just the opposite of boring. I found 5 songs which I play over and over again, my favorite is actually Steps in the Night. If you're a fan of music featuring the piano like me, you'll be sure to enjoy this CD.
The CD includes a very interesting music video version of Full Moon and the Shrine. Beautiful, and kind of spooky if you ask me. I don't know what the HDCD is supposed to mean but if it means that a higher quality version of the audio is available, I'm unaware of it. Of course I don't have a HDCD player though.
Even more addicting than this CD are some tracks on Dream Walk, but this CD has a larger quantity of slightly less addicting tracks.

Europe rocks the night...and the rest of the world.......2006-11-28
Hybrid.......2006-03-29
I love rock music groups like Asia and Journey but I also love new age/jazz like Mangione so "The Final Countdown" is a natural for me. Perhaps I even detect a little of Styx in there too. This is so eighties!
G.O.B.'s theme.......2006-02-11
All you need to know is that "Final Countdown" is the music that plays whenever G.O.B. does one of his magic acts on Arrested Development.
rock da night.......2005-10-09
wow. talk about the ultimate guilty pleasure...but i just don't care! i still get excited whenever the opening keyboard strains of the title track float out of the stereo. there's just something about a hard rock pop song done right! and Europe certainly had the formula down. it didn't hurt matters when you have a terrificly charismatic frontman like Joey Tempest and the amazing guitar work of John Norum. the cheese factor reaches an all time high in the middle of the album where the listener is hit with the dreadful back-to-back punch of "Ninja" and "Cherokee." ouch. but you can't help but sing along with a mixture of humour and self-disgust (because you know all the words...hahah). but the next track "Time has Come" has a killer melody and actually gets stuck in my head more times than i care to admit. this album is probably Europe's most focused (and most succesful) record to date. it contains a bit more of a punch than their previous releases and is easier to listen to than their bloated follow up of "Out Of This World."
4.5 stars - Pop metal, Europe style.......2005-05-18
The Final Countdown (1986.) Europe's third album.
Europe was one of the many heavy metal bands to emerge from the eighties. However, unlike the vasy majority of these bands who came from America or England, Europe came from Sweden. And this didn't make them any less able to rock and roll. Their first two albums, self-titled and Wings Of Tomorrow, were two of the finest metal albums of the entire decade, but unfortunately, never really gained any popularity. The band realized that if they wanted to gain mainstream success, they were going to have to commercialize their sound. And that's just what they did circa 1986. In that year, the band released their third album, The Final Countdown. The album is the one that made the band popular, but is it the sound we should remember the band for? Read on for my review.
Let me start this review by saying that if this had been Europe's first album (and the two that preceeded it didn't exist), it would have gotten a five star rating. Prior to this album, Europe's sound was heavier and less commercial, and it was definitely a better sound. THAT was the face of Europe that should have been immortalized; the albums after those two have nothing on them. Still, even when Europe commercialized, they remained an excellent band - albeit a very different one from the one that released those first two albums. The band more heavily integrated pop-metal elements, such as keyboards and power ballads, into their sound here. Normally this commercialization kills a band, but it did bring Europe a lot of good. The title track on the album became a classic eighties metal anthem, and the band's biggest hit of all. It's a very good track for the band to be remembered for, and you've gotta love those horn-like keyboards/synthesizers. The other big hit was the band's power ballad, Carrie. This is just a beautiful song, plain and simple. But my favorite song on the album would have to be Rock The Night (arguably my favorite song the band ever did), which harkens back to the band's earlier, heavier rock sound, while at the same time incorporating many of the new commercial elements into the sound. Every song on this album is excellent, and while I was disappointed to see the band change, I won't say that this change is all bad - it gave the band an audience, after all. It's just a shame they didn't last too long after its release, because they really were more than "just another hair band." If you're into eighties pop-flavored metal, this is damn good stuff.
This album was remastered and reissued as a part of the Metal Masters series. In addition to expanded liner notes, you also get three live version bonus tracks! The album is good enough as it is, and these extras only sweeten the deal. I just wish the REST of the band's catalogue would get this treatment, particuarly the first two albums. If you're gonna buy this album, though, be sure to get the remaster.
The Final Countdown is one of eighties pop metal's greatest triumphs. Sure, it's not the face of Europe that I wanted immortalized, but I'm not complaining either. If you're into pop-style metal of the eighties, Europe's most popular album will be right up your alley. This album is far superior to what most American pop-metal acts of the day were shelling out. One listen and you'll agree. Be warned, though - if you DON'T like pop metal, this record WILL NOT change your mind.

The best kids song compilation!.......2004-12-13
These songs are upbeat and cheerful. Great for little kids ears. I haven't been able to find a better compilation. My kids love it.
Cheery tunes that are even a pleasure for you.......2004-12-03
This collection is quite a pretty good one that even you will enjoy hearing, it seems to definitely have a positive effect on moods. I've noticed that even other adults that happen to be around while it's being played, hum, sing and sway to these tunes. The only two drawbacks according to me are, the music that accompanies some of the songs doesn't sound good at all with those songs and the fact that after the children finish singing several of the songs they make some comment, which actually ruins the end of some of the songs.
Not that impressed........2004-02-19
Although it is a very comprehensive collection, I cannot speak very highly of the overall quality of this product. The tunes are very monotonous, it is the same bit for all the songs. I wish there were some variations to the tempo of the songs presented in this collection.
Fantastic.......2002-11-01
Those 4 CDs are great. I bought '100 songs' when Erika was 6 months old and at 21 months she loves it more being able to sing some of it. The magic of this CD is the fact that is sing by kids. Its great on a long car trip!
Great for kids and parents.......2001-11-21
We first found out about these CD's at our daycare. Our daughter's teacher plays these CD's all the time. We loved them so much we bought our own. Our daughter loves the music and we love singing the many familiar songs from our childhood to her. Often when she's fussy in the car, we'll put in one of these CD's and she'll be happy. This is especially surprising since she hears the CD's all day at school five times a week. You'd think she'd be tired of them but she continues to love them.

Enjoyable.......2006-03-07
Not really a review as much as an FYI on the little bat thing. As per a number of online resources, the little bat verse is sung by the Mad Hatter in Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. So you can thank Lewis Carroll. Why the Countdown Kids chose to sing that rather than the more complete original version, I can't say. But the alternative verse is not randomly out of the blue.
drive time peace maker!.......2006-01-02
I bought this item 5 years ago when my son was born and we still have 3 of the 5 cd's in the car. My son is now 5 and my daughter is 3. Both my husband and I love having these cd's in the car. They make time in the car peaceful and fun! My kids began singing along as soon as they could talk and we either sing along with them or are able to just think or talk to each other with them happy (and singing) in the back. They are especially great on long trips.
My mother-in-law, who is an early childhood educator, had our kids one day and was driving our car and was very impressed with the cd's and commented on how great it is to have children's music in the car and how wonderful it is for kids to be listening and singing to music. She went out and bought the set for her childcare center the next day!
I have also purchased this set for several of my friends for a baby shower gift.
The one song (twinkle twinkle little star) does have an odd verse but I think it's great and gives us something to laugh about and call "silly".
We still have the cd's in the car and take special requests from each child daily!
Fun fun fun!.......2006-01-01
This review is for the 150 song CD by the Countdown Kids (which I don't see on Amazon) but all of the song on these CDs are on the 150 song CDs. I love these CDs. The songs are sung by children (mostly girls it seems) and they sing very well. My children (ages 3 and 5) dance around their room to all the songs. I even find some of them sticking to me and I can't help but sing them throughout the day.
As to the other reviewer's complaint about butchering songs? Well, I don't mind at all. Twinkle Twinkle Little Bat is fun and creative. Thank God we don't have to listen to "... Little Star" all the time, as if those are the only lyrics for the melody.
This is a fun CD for children ages 3 to 6. I'm very glad I bought it and am thinking about getting more for gifts.
Countdown Kids butcher childrens' songs.......2003-12-01
This CD set contains many of the song titles you'll recall from childhood. The problem is, the song lyrics are inexplicably altered. For example, "Twinkle twinkle little bat, how I wonder where you're at. Like a tea tray in the sky..." I've never seen a bat twinkle, but then I've not seen many bats. My husband and I hate this CD set. But, it does quiet down our 18 month old daughter, perhaps because the music is sung by children.

wonderful.......2003-12-07
This is a must-have album to add to your Keiko collection.
'A Cat on the Chimney' is too wonderful for words. It also has the haunting tune 'Mask'. I own 27 Keiko CD's - and have this one in both the original issue and the new Shout re-issue (which includes three bonus solo piano tracks). This is one of my favorites.
If you ever have the chance to see Keiko perform live, TAKE IT! in the meantime, you'll play this recording over-and-over.

"Presense of the Moon" by Keiko Matsui.......2002-05-28
"Presense of the Moon" is a powerful and lucid Dream Walk that Keiko shares with us...as always, Keiko's music stirs strong emotions and captures my mind...the music feels tribal and exotic... but also reflects an inner knowing. Just beautiful!!!
Keiko Matsui - Her music is a dream.......2001-10-19
It does not do justice to describe music with words alone.
Moving, passionate, dreamy, ethereal, rhythmic...
My favorite track, and one of my all time favorite musical pieces is "Bridge Over the Stars"... but the entire album is exceptional.
Her other albums are also outstanding. Try "Sapphire" and "Whisper...".
Best I've heard.......2001-03-29
This was my first Keiko Matsui CD. I have since purchased two more because I loved this one so much. I was disappointed in the other two. This is a must have for any new age/jazz collection.
