All things old..........2005-09-26
The first two discs, entitled 'Monks and Troubadours', combine folk songs and chansons with Gregorian chant sequences - the first disc has chants for Palm Sunday (performed by the monks of Munsterschwarzach, Germany) together with songs performed by the Early Music Consort of London. The second disc incorporates chants that might be used at a church dedication (performed by the monks of Notre-Dame de Fontgombault Abbey, France) and songs again by the Early Music Consort. The difference is palpable. Gregorian chant varies significantly from the polyphonic songs of the troubadours.
The third disc is of motets, composed by Dunstable, Dufay, Binchois, Obrecht, and Desprez, some (but not all) of the great names in medieval composition. This collection includes a polytexted motet by Dunstable and more standard forms in which all voices join to sing the same words. Binchois' motet 'Gloria, laus et honor' derives from a Gregorian chant found on the first disc, with words still familiar in the modern hymn 'All Glory, Laud and Honour'.
The fourth CD inlcudes masses by Desprez and Ockeghem. Desprez is one of the greatest of the medieval composers, and his Missa L'homme arme is one of the better known; Ockeghem's mass here is one for the dead, a very common type of composition, here expertly executed. The final piece on this disc is a song written by Desprez in honour of Ockeghem, which despite not using typical mass or biblical texts, still incorporates the introit from the requiem, and as a mark of respect for the passing of Ockeghem, Desprez composed the music itself using all black notes.
This Archiv production is a stunning collection, great for the listener and great for the student. In one set, one has a broad range of music, spanning many types and hundreds of years. The production quality is very high, the music itself wonderful, the performances beautifully carried out - not much more can be asked for from a recording.

Philippe De Vitry: Motets & Chansons

It may or may not have been Phillipe de Vitry who invented the style of motets, ballades, lais, and simple rondeaux, but regardless, this composer, diplomat, and Bishop of Meaux was enormously influential. Unfortunately, none of his most important writings are extant, but we do have some of his poetry and a portion of his famous treatise on music. His compositions suffer from that common affliction of many medieval works: We're not exactly sure what he did and did not write. Sixteen motets have been attributed to him, four of them are fairly certain. There also are a number of songs that may be by de Vitry, and this recording gives us 20 of these motets and chansons, expertly performed. Whoever wrote them, we're fortunate to have these outstanding examples of the "new" style of the early 14th century known as "ars nova." Very readable and informative liner notes, typical of Sequentia's recordings, accompany them here. --David VernierCustomer Reviews:
REISSUED definitive portrait!!!!!!!!.......2005-05-23
This recording presents the 4 undisputed motets of Philippe de Vitry (1291-1361) [tracks 5, 13, 19, 20] alongside 9 others attributed to him, 2 organ intabulations and 5 monophonic courtly lyrics that may be of his authorship. The isorythmic motets (generally seen as epitomising the first Ars Nova developments) are certainly 'modern' compositions, employing all the features denounced by Jacques de Liege [c.1260-after 1330] (who defended Ars Antiqua principles in 'Speculum Musice'), including rapidly declaimed texts and 'hocketing' (fast upper-voice exchanges of notes and rests). The monophonic pieces here are in the Troubadour / Trouvere style (2 High Style chansons, 2 Low Style songs [1 lai and 1 descort]) and also point to the development of the virelai (the most familiar egs of which are by Machaut).
Sequentia's performances are brisk and crisply articulated, like their other interpretations of 13th and 14th century motets on CD (the de Vitry performances of Gothic Voices and the Orlando Consort are generally slower). In line with recent musicological research, the untexted parts are vocalised. The monophonic songs are also convincingly done, with sparse accompaniment that is sensitive and effective (vielle or harp, respecting their Troubadour/Trouvere origins).
In all, this is still the definitve recording of this repertoire. Bravo to DHM for finally reissuing it!!

You will never regret buying this recording.......2004-04-02
I sometimes wonder if the groups that originally performed these pieces some 800 years ago were as good as the London Early Music Consort. We will never know, but we are fortunate to have recordings of this group. The liner notes are interesting too; you get a perspective of some of the contentious social issues of the day.
To those listeners who never heard much polyphony and yet have over-listened to all the other genres and need something different to expand your horizon, give this a look. It is among the best of its genre, and if you can get caught in it, you will be blown away.
