Customer Reviews:
Great unknown group.......2006-05-11
Im sure most people have not heard of Lake, which is a shame. This is a vastly underrated band from the late 70s that deserves to be rediscovered. They created great pop/rock songs that stay with you long after you have heard them.Ouch is there 4th album and it is a perfect representation of the group at their best. There isnt a bad song on it but 'Something Here' and 'Hit Your Mama' stand out.I truly belive that if they had been given more airplay back then they would have become much more well known. Please, take my word for it....buy this cd...you wont be disappointed.
OUCH! is accurately titled........2004-12-14
The fourth release from this great prog-pop band hits a wake in the Lake. Gone are keyboardists Geoff Peacey and Detlef Petersen, who wrote nearly all the music (with James Hopkins-Harrison's lyrics) for the first three great albums, and their void is reflected here. While Ouch! is certainly not bad, in fact a few of the tunes such as Celebrate are actually pretty good, what's missing are the memorable hooks, nuances and counterpoints of Mssrs. Peacey and Petersen, not to mention their absolutely amazing keys and synth work. Guitarist Alex Conti also left during production of this album, and it all went downhill from there. The last gasp of the remnants of the premiere late seventies line-up of this outstanding band. Get it if you must, but don't bother with anything after this.
Their best...... PERIOD!!!!.......2004-10-27
I have to agree with W.G. Ellis, this is their best album...... and my personal favourite from them.
Another Great Album by Lake.......2003-09-28
It's a shame Lake didn't get wider recognition than they did. This is their fourth US release and despite the substantial personel changes in the band on this album, I couldn't tell the difference. (And I'm a 25 year long Lake fan) Vocalist/Composer James Hopkins-Harrison, Guitarist Alex Conti and Drummer Dieter Ahrendt return from the original incarnation of the group, augmented with some new German talent who all help in assist in the composing department. The sound of the album is great, produced by James William Guercio (of Chicago fame) it is as tight and well balanced as their previous albums. If you've enjoyed any of Lakes other albums, you won't be disappointed by this one. If you're new to the group, order this one plus the "Lake/Paradise Island" CD (a dual release of their first and third albums)and you'll get a whole lot of great Lake for a real bargin price. This is well crafted, melodic yet sophisticated 70's music at it's best. Get these CD's while you still can.
Ouch! Feels Good........2002-04-15
This was Lake's fourth American release and in my opinion is their best. Great melodies, great producton, great vocals and really nice guitar playing. I discovered Lake many years ago when I bought their first album with the picture of the cat in the sink. It was a pleasant surprise and I've been a fan ever since. Do yourself a favour and buy this album and discover what so many have missed and some of us have known for years...Lake is a very good band that never got their due. Although I hate comparisons because each band is good in their own rights... Think of Crosby, Stills, and Nash with a rockier edge and tighter instumentality.

Okay...Nothing More.......2005-03-23
'Ouch' is the Ohio Players second Boardwalk album and it isn't a whole lot better then the first.Neither of the albums for that label were very well crafted, albeit pretty funky. But funk without form is just that-formless.It doesn't sound good to the ear when the rhythms are forced to hold themselfs in place in lieu of a decent song. And on most of 'Ouch' that's what happens-the Philly-type R&B of "I'd Better Have A Coffee Break" is a decent enough tune with the albums only real hook. But this was a 1982 release and finds the bands sound still stuck firmly in the 70's-these tunes often sound like outtakes from the 'Angel' album-"Do Your Thing" just plods with the same musical idea for over five minutes and goes nowhere. It doesn't commit as many musical miscues as the previous years album
'Tenderness' but nothing here COMPARES to even 1978's critically
panned 'Jass-A-Lay-Day'.I'd even go as far as recommending 1984's highly electro 'Graduation'-at least the album is tighter and the songwriter is existant!None of that can be said for this sadly enough.

Pretty good, but go seem them live .......2005-11-13
I saw The Grates with The Go! Team, another band who sound sublime live but didn't produce or mix their album up to it's potential. The Grates show was very impressive and the Seattle crowd were probably more thrilled with them than the other bands that night. Some of their songs kind of fall into that Roger's Sisters, Pylon-ish post punk sound and they also have a few sweet and tender pop numbers too. The lead singer and drummer are both very fun to watch and all their songs sounded good that night at The Showbox. Alas, I didn't think this EP was particularly good. I think they should have traded production styles with the Go! Team. This Grates ep could have been rawer and lower fi whereas The Go! Team album needed more polish. I will still try The Grates full length when it comes out. Hopefully that lives up to their fun show!
