My favorite band in 1992.......2007-04-21
In the summer of 1992, we were already bored with the on set of the Alternative rock bands that had gone mainstream earlier that year. Nirvana was great but every band that followed just didn't cut it for us.
That summer, we stepped back a year and we played that CD more than any other CD. This band has depth and soul - I believe if they would have formed just a year or two sooner, they would have made it big.
I found my old CD tonight...it's a little scratched up but I listened to it anyways. I still remember EVERY single lyric on ALL the tracks. My favorite tracks are: Lost, RattleSnake Eyes, Romeo Blues and Big Western Sky....ahh...brings back memories.
I wish they'd get back together and go on tour because I never got to see them live.

Classic southern hard rock - and as good as it gets..........2007-05-05
Fortunately, this album "No Rules" has lately been re-released by Retrospect Records - and I found out. The result: almost insane volume setting in my amplifier and Grado headphones. Because this is DAMN good rock! I'd say that if you like Whitesnake, Lynyrd Skynyrd and so on, you will absolutely love this! Bluesy, strong, nicely varying music. There are no fillers in this album; every song is there for purpose. And the best ones... well, let's say that a very much music loving female friend of mine commented: "Absolutely fantastic music!" She was right. One of the best rock albums I have ever heard, rock at rock's very heart...

Richard Crooks: A Fine Man and a Master Singer.......2006-06-23
The 2 CD set is a most welcome release, and I note that, for now at least, one seller has it available at the bargain price of $14.95. Collectors of the recordings of singers from the early years of last century please note, and snap it up while still on offer at such a modest cost.
These historic recordings have a bad habit of vanishing because too often there is insufficient apparent interest shown by potential buyers. I am relieved to have bought a copy and urge others to do so. Making due allowance for some poor quality recordings by today's high fidelity standards, there are wonderful treasures to enjoy indeed in this set.
A Richard Crooks Collection.......2003-12-06
Already, however, I had heard many of Crooks' 78-rpm recordings for RCA Victor. Crooks had retired in 1945, due to serious health problems, but he actually could still sing quite well, as can be determined by hearing some of the rare private recordings of Crooks singing at a wedding in 1968. Those recordings, included in this wonderful compilation, are proof that Crooks still had the same beautiful, lyrical voice which had so distinguished his singing over the years. Sadly, Crooks was already battling the cancer that would ultimately take his life in September 1972.
This two-CD compilation, prepared by the Stanford (University) Archives of Recorded Sound, goes back to one of Crooks' earliest recordings, an unreleased Columbia recording of "The Americans Come." It also includes some of his early Victor recordings. Among these is the "Serenade" from Rudolf Friml's "The Student Prince." (Crooks also sang with the Victor Light Opera Company in some of their medley recordings, which were so popular during the 1920's. One of the recordings is a medley of songs from "The Student Prince," in which Crooks alternates with another tenor, Lambert Murphy, on some of the solos.)
One of the amazing releases in this collection is Franz Schubert's "Die schone Mullerin," in which Crooks is wonderfully accompanied by Frank LaForge. Remarkably, Victor never issued these recordings. The only problem is that there are occasional flaws in the original masters, but the brilliant singing comes through.
Crooks often talked about singing in public when he was only 10 years old. Famed German contralto Ernestine Schumann Heink was present at the performance and, at the very end, she planted a big kiss on the boy, to his embarassment. Crooks also spoke of hearing Enrico Caruso sing at the Metropolitan Opera; he said that Caruso's recordings are like listening to the tenor in the lobby with the doors closed!
There are some interesting curiosities in this collection, too, such as some recordings of various operatic arias recorded in Germany and sung in German, regardless of the original language. However, operas were usually sung in German in Germany in the 1920's and 1930's, so Crooks was simply following the custom of the time.
There is also the double-sided 12-inch 78-rpm RCA Victor "Red Seal" disk that Crooks always said was his favorite: two famous arias by Richard Wagner, the "Prize Song" from "Meistersinger" and "En fernem land" from "Lohengrin." One marvels at not only the beauty and sweetness of Crooks' voice but his amazing diction. His training and experience in Germany served him well.
One of the special treats is hearing two Stephen Foster classics, "De Camptown Races" and "Beautiful Dreamer," sung with Bing Crosby on 1940's radio broadcasts. When this writer met Crooks in 1969, he told how he remained in touch with Bing, who lived a few miles north of him. It's clear that the two, very different singers admired each other and they also had some fun singing such songs.
Among Crooks' last commercial recordings was a new version of "The Americans Come," recorded in January 1945. This seemed particularly appropriate as World War II wound down to its terrible end. Sadly, Crooks' serious illness ended his wonderful musical career that year, but the surviving recordings on these two CD's are a lasting testimony to the abilities of this gifted singer who was also a wonderful human being.

Urgently recommended despite some production missteps.......2007-01-07
The Poisoned Kiss is a romantic comedy, a fairy tale about the triumph of true love over revenge. The opera is not through-sung; rather, the dramatic action is carried forward by dialogue in a manner reminiscent of Gilbert and Sullivan or the West End. At times, the witty, good-naturedly sarcastic text and playful rhyme schemes are reminiscent of Noel Coward.
The musicians are just about ideal. Hickox leads a luscious performance, capturing by turn the music's pastoral beauty and (not very threatening) irony. The singers are of uniformly high quality, with the characterization and fresh voices of James Gilchrist and Janice Watson as the young lovers deserving special mention. Anne Collins's fruity, wide-vibratoed contralto at times seems to be a musical caricature, but it works nicely in the role.
The production has two major flaws. First, the sound image is placed rather distant from the listener. I felt as if I were sitting towards the back of the auditorium and wanted to move up closer to the stage. The SACD's surround mode did add compensatory perspective and body to the sound, as well as a little extra punch to the thunder, cat shrieks, and other fairy-tale sound effects. The two-channel version sounded significantly flatter and more distant. Second, almost all of the dialogue has been omitted. It would have been enjoyable to hear the music in its dramatic context. Indeed, the abrupt juxtaposition of musical numbers that in performance would be separated by dialogue and a shift of dramatic tone is sometimes jarring. With less than an hour on each disc (and with singers who display such fine diction and acting skills), this is a major missed opportunity. Fortunately, the dialogue is printed in the libretto.
Despite these quibbles, this set is still urgently recommended!
