4 out of 5 stars Pub rock legends 3rd and 5th LPs.......2005-08-09

Having survived their legendary promotional disaster at the Fillmore East, the band regrouped, moved into a communal house, and took up weekly residency at The Tally Ho pub. Their third album, 1972's "Silver Pistol" clearly reflects all of these changes, and shows the band developing a more organic blend of country, rock and blues. Recorded at their home, it's both tightened by their daily interaction as housemates, and relaxed by the lack of a studio clock ticking away their funds. The Brinsleys desire to be The Band is still heavily evident in the country-soul inflections of their arrangements (most notably on the title track), but Nick Lowe's lyrical voice was growing in originality, including the lovely waltz "Nightingale" and the twangy "The Last Time I Was Fooled." Ian Gomm added a few fine songs to the band's canon, including the opening country waltz "Dry Land," the organ soul "One More Day," and the surf-tinged instrumental "Rockin' Chair."

The second half of BGO's two-fer is the band's fifth LP, 1973's "Please Don't Ever Change." In between these two albums, the Brinsley's released their definitive "pub rock" effort (1972's "Nervous on the Road"), and this latter album shows them reaching out to new ground, including ska and reggae. The result is a more scattered, neither as organically homogenous as "Silver Pistol," nor as singularly forceful and original as "Nervous on the Road." There are some great songs here, including Gomm's soulful opener "Hooked on Love," Lowe's bouncy ska "Why Do We Hurt the One We Love" and Lieber-Stoller-styled "Down in Mexico," and a sweet (though perhaps tongue-in-cheek) take of Goffin and King's "Don't Ever Change." A live recording of Ronnie Self's "Home in My Hand" (which appeared in studio version on the "Nervous on the Road" LP) gives a glimpse of what the Brinsley's sounded like after a pint or two.

Both albums offer songs that would remain with the members of Brinsley Schwarz for years to come. American songwriter Jim Ford's "Ju Ju Man" would become a staple for Nick Lowe and Rockpile, as would Lowe's own "Play That Fast Thing (One More Time)," while Gomm would reprise "Hooked on Love" for his solo album "Summer Holiday." Much of the rest would live in unearned obscurity, cured (with the aid of Alan Robinson's lengthy, informative liner notes) by this terrific two-on-one release.

5 out of 5 stars Albert King's Final Stax Compilation!.......2004-03-10

Albert King enjoyed his most fruitful years at Stax records. This set is a compilation of singles and studio cuts he'd done after his "I Wanna Get Funky" LP. It has a wide range of material, from his version of the Staple Singer's, "I Can't Stand The Rain" to the title track, too long for radio, but a 1970's Blues gem. "The Blues Don't Change" is a mellow tune with Albert using a pedal for one of the first times. He has Henry Bush, his 70's Stax producer, doing back up vocals and it is an interesting, soulful tune. "I'm Doing Fine" is probably the best song on the CD. It is another King Minor Key Classic! Jimmy King also did a respectable cover of this tune in the 1990s. I personally love "Oh, Pretty Woman" it is funky and it is in a groove similar to his reworking of Crosscut Saw on "I Wanna Get Funky". The Pinch- as this set was originally called- is a major sexest minor key tune with a Part 2 instrumental similar to "I'll Play The Blues For You" and "Drowning on Dry Land". The guitar blends well with the horns. "King of Kings" is another instrumental offering with soul overtones. And a Hammond organ in the style of Booker T Jones!

"Firing Line' is a tune Albert re-recorded later on his "I'm In A Phone Booth" set, however, this one is fatter and more soulful- as Stax was in general. Albert King redefined Urban Blues during his time at Stax. He never changed his playing or style- he just adapted it to different grooves. This was his contribution to American Music and this CD represents the end of an era.

5 out of 5 stars an exelent cd.......2004-02-20

i was blown away the first time i heard it i have over 30 of albert's cd's this is one of my favorites along with funky london this one is so clean it is like a recent release both for albert fans are must have cd's.

5 out of 5 stars Great!.......1998-10-19

I first saw Albert King as a college student 25 years ago. We all sat on a flat dance floor in the student union while he enthralled this group of young hippies who soon realized they had stumbled onto something wonderful.

Coming back to him now, I had the same experience. What a wonderful find. King sings the blues, but this is one of the happiest albums I own. Both his singing and his guitar playing are infectious.

5 out of 5 stars What you've been looking for..........2000-07-04

Awright BFFers, if you've been looking for a good Single from the Boys, this one is it! DCYP is cut short as it is the radio edit, Army has the cuss words and is normal length. Missing the War is decent, but it sounds like Ben has a cold in it. But the coup de gracie is this: Song for the Dumped. If you have been looking for the version that they perform on stage, this one is it! It has a hilarious intro, all the way through piano scratching bass scratching and drum hitting! Check out this CD ya'll

5 out of 5 stars Beautifully understated drama.......2005-06-10

Despite a lack of big arias, Golem is a good opera. The singers in this production are very effective in conveying the inner tensions of their characters. Although there is little physical movement, the drama of Rabbi Judah Loeb confronting the monster he has created is intense.
The scenic cantata, Arald, is Bretan's masterpiece. It is a lyrical evocation of memory, despair, and resignation. Arald puts the listener through all of the emotional upheaval of Das Lied von der Erde in half of the time. This performance of Arald is as affecting as the best performances of Das Lied von der Erde that I have heard.

4 out of 5 stars More beautiful music than we'd any right to expect........2001-01-25

The Transylvanian composer Bretan had one of the grimmer lives of any notable composer - his wife's family were murdered in Auschwitz; his refusal in post-war Romania to become a Communist led to his silencing - but you wouldn't know it from either of these operas.

They are serious and solemn enough. 'Golem' takes the old story of a rampaging Frankenstein-type monster and turns it into a melancholy dialogue about life, science, creation, family. 'Arald', with its hero supplicating the Seer of the Underworld to resuscitate his dead love, forswears doomy Gothic in favour of more metaphysical musings.

From a dramatic point of view, both works are static. Musically, however, they are gloriously reminiscent of mid-period Verdi - bountifully melodic, rapturously sad - with an Eastern European flavour. The fact that an opera composer in the mid-20th century dared even write a TUNE is reason enough to rejoice.

4 out of 5 stars Two short beautiful, somber lyric operas........1999-05-07

"Golem" is a one-act opera about the legendary clay man created by the Rabbi of Prague. The poignant libretto is by the composer. The music is beautiful and lyric, but has no memorable tunes. Stylistically, it is a bit like Rimsky-Korsakoff's operatic writing. "Arald" is not really an opera but a scenic cantata. It tells of the despair of the khan of the Avars over the loss of his wife. The gloom of both text and music put me off at first. On second hearing, I loved it! It is more tuneful than "Das Lied von der Erde" and has none of the dissonance of Bartok's "Duke Bluebeard's Castle", but the mood is similar.
