Crowded House Reform - Official Statement from the Band

Crowded House founders Neil Finn and Nick Seymour have confirmed that they will be putting the band back together, with plans for a new studio album and world tour.

Talking about the decision Neil said "After spending most of last year making music and hanging out with my friend Nick Seymour we are now announcing our intention to reform Crowded House with a new record entitled Time On Earth. It feels right to us that the band should re-emerge at this time and together with Mark Hart we look forward to reconnecting with the audience that we established and for whom we still hold a deep respect. We aim to make the upcoming shows and the new music every bit as vital and spirited as what has come before. We are conscious that Paul Hester was above all a great drummer and we are currently auditioning to find someone special to take that role."

The band is currently putting the finishing touches on the new album for release later in the year. Tour plans are yet to be announced but the band have confirmed they will play the Coachella Music and Arts Festival in California USA along with Bjork, Red Hot Chilli Peppers and Rage Against the Machine."

they are coming out with a new album this year (2007) and a new tour!!!!

GOD BLESS CROWDED HOUSE.....

5 out of 5 stars Great CD.......2007-02-09

I really didn't know much about this band. I loved the song "Don't Dream It's Over"; so I bought this CD. The entire CD is great. It is filled with easy listening and mellow songs. The CD just leaves you feeling really good. I love it.

5 out of 5 stars Essential compilation of severely underrated band.......2007-01-19

I agree with most of the other reviewers: Crowded House were massively underrated. The critics were fond of their albums at the time, and in the years since Neil Finn has been acknowledged of one of the master songwriters of his generation. Still, outside of their home turf of Australia and New Zealand, few people are familiar with the name Crowded House. Play them "Don't Dream It's Over," their brilliant 1987 chart-topper, and you'll probably get a vague, "Ohhh, they did *that* song." This is simply a shame.

Almost every band purported to be the Next Big Thing eventually gets compared to The Beatles, whether it's Duran Duran or The Strokes, and it's usually quite a stretch in any number of ways. Not so with Crowded House. In superficial aesthetics the two bands share a lot in common: the Rubber Soul-like harmonies that adorn their album Woodface; the driving, melodic basslines of Nick Seymour (much like Paul McCartney); Paul Hester's non-technical, but undeniably toe-tapping drumming; and Neil Finn's voice, which can break into Lennon-esque, hoarse rock shout, or have a soothing clarinet quality like McCartney.

But the songwriting is where the comparison is most apt. The Beatles' best songs seem almost inevitable and cosmic: *somebody* was bound to happen upon a melody this perfect eventually (as in "Yesterday"), and for some reason Lennon and McCartney were able to pluck such songs out of the air regularly. Neil Finn did the same, several times for each album, with Crowded House. Listen to "Four Seasons In One Day" just once, and you'll hear what I mean.

With this album, all these songs are collected in one place. I can't say how essential this disc is for anyone who appreciates outstanding pop songwriting that goes beyond catchy and crafted and into the realm of something deep and transcendent. The first 10 listens you'll be enjoying the melodies, energy and fantastic production; after that, you'll feel like you've found a new musical best friend. It's that good.

5 out of 5 stars An entire CD that is very easy to listen to........2007-01-13

This CD plays like an easy listening extravaganza. Every song is mellow and classic. The band is apparently from New Zealand/Australia, which may explain the subtle brit pop undertones.. not to mention the McCartney-esque style of a few tracks. Overall this CD is a great buy, you won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars beautiful, soaring, exciting pop/rock.......2006-12-31

When I first listened to this disk, I could knew one Crowded House song (Don't Dream It's Over), which is a great song, but I didn't know the band. A friend recommended this disk, which I listened to the first time at work. I didn't get anything done for that hour, and if CD's could wear out, I'd long ago have needed to replace this one.

Crowded House may not be a major band - one MTV hit, a couple of radio hits, and they're real big in New Zealand (where they are from) - but they are one of greats. Reminiscent at times of (OK, I know, this gets thrown around too often, but it's true) the Beatles (in their mid-years - think Rubber Soul) and The Ocean Blue, they can mellow with the best (Not the Girl You Think You Are, Four Seasons in One Day). When they choose to rock (Locked Out), the maintain musical and lyrical integrity. Weather With You is an indescribable joy.

Perhaps not for metalheads, but anyone who likes sophisticated (but not overly complex) arrangements, thoughtful lyrics, and spotless, emotional performance will love this.

5 out of 5 stars If you're wondering Split Who? Start here........2007-04-06

What's with all these "new wave" reviews? Split Enz never belonged to any wave. University daze, mid 70's and what do I encounter? The most out there, incredibly hard rocking, deliberately off centre bunch of guys with one of the best songwriter/voice combinations ever. I'm talking about Split Enz, followers of no fad whatsoever (akin to the concept of trend-setter really, long gone by the time everyone gets to wherever they're at) and particularly about Tim Finn.

Split Enz was Tim's band, Neil came along a bit later, added significantly to the band (not that it was lacking without him) and then drifted off into pop-la-la-land as Crowded House. Tim never went down the pop route and Spilt Enz was his early tour de force.

This compilation is a superb introduction to the band, or a good "best of" to have in the car or whatever. As to whether the selected tracks really are the best, who cares? They're a great selection. You get some hard rocking stuff like "I see red", "I Got You" and "Shark Attack", some wonderful melodic pieces "Dirty Creature", "Pioneer/Six Months in a Leaky Boat", "Poor Boy", "Message to my Girl" and Neil's "I walk away" (you can hear Crowded House all through this one, played by the better band).

All in all I cannot recommend this highly enough as a starter/taster of one of the best and least known (outside of AU/NZ) bands around.

After you've listened to this a few times and gone "wow", you better get True Colours and any of the early albums and then you'll really know what you missed out on.

And you'll be thinking ... goddam, why isn't this band around now? Well, it isn't, but Tim and Neil are and their 2004 release "Everyone is Here" is sublime.

3 out of 5 stars A Poor Man's Squeeze.......2006-11-14

As I listened to this compilation, I couldn't help but notice that their pop sound was substantially akin to that of Squeeze. Unlike that band's singles compilation (45's and Under), this isn't hit after hit after hit. It's far too patchy, and moments of pop genius are interlaced with moments of vacous mediocrity.

I reckon that, if you like 80s pop music that's light on the synths, give these blokes a shot. Just be aware that you can get similar (and superior) fare from other bands (i.e., Squeeze).

P.S.

The band's earlier days, which according to the liner notes, were "adorably arty, wilfully experimental, and completely unfathomable to a mainstream audience," aren't covered in this collection. Sad; I might've been able to classify them as a poor man's Roxy Music as well.

5 out of 5 stars best Of The Boston Scene.......2006-07-08

Split Enz may be from down under, but they remind me of the 80's boston scene.

5 out of 5 stars Beware of "well written" reviews that say NOTHING!.......2006-06-29

This is a fantastic collection and you probably already know that if you're looking to buy this CD. Contrary to what certain spotlight writers might suggest, "I Hope I Never" is an incredibly haunting, beautiful song. Tim Finn writes and sounds very little like Paul McCartney. In fact, I challenge anyone in the F.B.I. with a voice I.D. software program to find sufficient sonic connections between them! Furthermore, melodic songwriting is not the personal domain of The Beatles, who themselves were incredibly "derrivitive" (ie, Dylan, Motown artists, Elvis, Ray Charles, The Beach Boys, Ravi Shankar, British dancehall, etc). As influenced as the Finns might have been by The Beatles (who wasn't?!), Split Enz had their own distinctive sound. "True Colours" is a fine example of some of New Wave's best creative songwriting, innovative sounds and approach. What many often forget is that there was no definable New Wave formula. This left bands free to experiment as they wished under the "something new" category. Yes, this was way before college rock or indie music branded artists with marketable, definable sounds and image. Ah, those were the days my friend... Bands were doing their own thing in a spontaneous way that you just don't hear much of anymore. I got "True Colours" for Christmas that year and none of the other bands of that era sounded quite like them, apart from maybe Sparks or The Undertones. And if you still think Spit Enz were McCartney rip offs, try a comparison test between them and some of McCartney's New Wave efforts, such as "Getting Closer" off Wings Back to the Egg. I think it will be obivous that they aren't really on the same page. Listen for yourself and write your own review!

5 out of 5 stars Just awesome..........2005-10-16

It is really hard not to like Split Enz or Crowded House for that matter. (Even with their saturation on Aussie radio) I always liked Split Enz a bit more than Crowded House because it had more of a New Wave sound to it, and you can see on this compliation the band develop with more raw songs like History Never Repeats and I See Red to the more Crowded House sound with Message To My Girl. The songs are just well done no matter what, you can tell the Finn's were heavily influenced by The Beatles, and the result here is just solid.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Collection .......2005-12-17

This is an excellent sampling of the music of one of the greatest composers of the twentieth century, displaying a wide range of emotion, from the enthusiasm of the first selection, the Festive Overture, to the soaring lyrical beauty of the Romance (track 5), to the poetry of the andante movement of the Piano Concerto No. 2 (track 9), to the slow, deep, intensity of the Largo movement of the Piano Trio No. 2 (track 13), very movingly performed by the Stockholm Arts Trio.

At the same time that the various musical selections exhibit Shostakovich's range and diversity, they are nonetheless arranged in such a way that the listener doesn't experience any unpleasant impact from the sudden change in tempo that occurs, for example, when the Romance in track 5 ends, and the very next selection is the highly energetic allegro movement from the Symphony No. 10. Rather, the feeling is one of stimulation and excitement as one moves, from one selection to the next, through the wonderful variety of Shostakovich's compositions.

The quality of the musicianship on every track is first rate, including the selections played by the National Symphony Orchestra of Ukraine and its talented conductor, Theodore Kuchar. The andante movemont of the Piano Concerto No. 2 is a slice of musical heaven, played wonderfully by pianist Michael Houston and the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra. There is power, intensity, tenderness, subtlety, and great beauty in the wonderful performances on this very reasonably priced CD. The sound engineering is also first rate, with crystal clear sound and excellent balance of the instruments. For those who want to hear a greater number of selections from this composer, Naxos has now released the two-CD "The Very Best of Shostakovitch."

Amongst the "Best of" or "Greatest Hits of" classical music CD's that I have, this is one of the best. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Traditional & Modern, Russian & Global........2003-03-21

This CD opens a door for me to explore the huge music treasure of Shostakovich. I love every piece of music on this CD. "The Gadfly" film score suit is especially beautiful and performed by first-class musicians in National Symphony Orchestra of Ukraine. There is too little, this is the only problem with this CD to me.

5 out of 5 stars !.......2000-07-13

5 out of 5 stars Great single disc collection of world wide hits but lacking.......2004-10-03

Although this is a great single collection of the band's best known world wide hits, its missing some key album tracks that should be included as well. Neil Finn's "Iris", the original versionof "I Walk Away" , "The Devil You Know" and Tim's "Walking Through the Ruins", "Ghost Girl" and Eddie Rayner's perfect introduction to "Six Months" "Pioneer". Also missing are a couple of Phil Judd's essential tracks.

As a single CD sampler of the band's hits, this is exceptional but hardly essential. The remastered sound is pretty good although it lacks the dynamic range I would have expected from a newer release. Still, "Message to My Girl" has never sounded quite so wonderful as here.

2 out of 5 stars Even Chris Thompson wouldn't want to be remembered like this........2007-01-24

It pains me to write negative reviews. After all, much opinion is subjective, even that of sound quality. (Sadly) I know people who cannot distinguish the difference in sound between a disc played on a $100 Chinese sound system and one played on a $10,000 high-end SACD system. That said, you can probably see where I am heading here. The programme contents of this 'Best of" compilation are fine, covering the artist's solo work, that with his band Night, Manfred Mann's Earth Band, Alan Parsons project - even a single with Sarah Brightman - no real complaints there. However, it is the sound quality, or rather lack of it, that lets this retrospective down. If you read 'Charlie Bear's' review of 'Night', you will find a list of what he describes as the record label's trangressions, and many of them appear on this release also:
* bad sonics
* inconsistent db levels
* thin shallow sound
It seems Renaissance Records are the culprit again. What should have been a satisfying overview of Chris Thompson's career has turned out to be a thoroughly frustrating listening experience. According to the liner notes, John W Edwards of Renaissance is responsible for the 'digital remastering' (shame on you Mr Edwards), and the whole product is licensed by Chris Thompson to Renaissance. Bet you he wishes he'd picked another label.

In conclusion, this disc is only recommended to those whose 'ear' is not particularly discerning. 2 stars for the titles included.

5 out of 5 stars I never understood..........2006-10-02

...what happened to The Chills. They wrote some of the best pop songs of the nineties, yet could never seem to get their act together enough to fulfill their real potential. This is a good introduction, though really you might be better off just buying Submarine Bells and Kaleidoscope world instead, because once you hear this you're going to want to buy them anyways. My biggest regret is that they left off the bonus disc that was included in the original import pressing: while it only has a handful of difficult to find songs on it, one of those songs, Big Dark Day, is one of their best and, unless you have the patience (and luck) to track down the original single it was on, is nearly impossible to find anymore. Yet another example of one of the saddest pop music tragedies that no one seems to know or care about.

4 out of 5 stars Good New Zealand pop group.......2006-08-26

The Chills were part of the seminal New Zealand label Flying Nun and were part of the so called 'Dunedin sound.' More or less they specialised in twee, catchy pop songs with an indie quality to them. Sometimes they are very beautiful, but sometimes a bit too twee and corny in terms of lyrics. But overall they were a good band and admirable in many respects. But its important to remember most of their songs were twee, this saves me mentioning it for every song. The compilation starts strongly with the Chills best known hit the aptly titled Heavenly Pop Hit, a memorable song. Thats followed by the short but sweet I Love My Leather Jacket, a tribute to a friend who passed away. One of the compilations best tunes comes after, the exquisute Doledrums which features a buoyant melody and pulls off the age old trick of writing a happy sounding song about a depressing subject. The chorus lyrics are "In the doledrums, On the dole." Fitting lyrics for a New Zealand rock band in 1990. The fourth track double summer is slightly soppy but is a great song nonetheless featuring a very beautiful melody. The Oncoming Day is more driving than most Chills songs and is good but not as good as the next tune Rolling Moon. This is a prime slice of early 80s Flying Nun 'Dunedin Sound' pop, a great, understated melodic tune which strongly reminds me of being a student in Dunedin, which I am. The standard kind of lowers slightly after than with some more forgettable songs like Never Never Go which are ok but not outstanding. Some more great tunes come later though with the classic Pink Frost which is introspective, brooding, beautiful and slightly creepy. Another pop classic follows with Kaleidoscope World. Some other decent tracks round out the rest of the comp. Anyone interested in Flying Nun or the Dunedin Sound will do well to buy this album, it features some great, unique tunes and overall is very good. But anyone who likes indie or pop/rock might like it.

4 out of 5 stars Good overview.......2002-08-29

This is a great collection of heartfelt pop songs, however as it says it an 'uptempo collection' and therfore misses some of their finest quieter moments.
I'd recommend getting Submarine Bells before this.
Also i do need to point out to the previous guy that The Church were very much Australian.

5 out of 5 stars a great retrospective.......2001-01-21

I don't know what's in the water in New Zealand, but that little island produced some of the best pop bands of the 1980's. Sure, you've heard the Church and Crowded House, but the Chills may have been the best of the bunch. "Greatest Hits" records usually tend to skip some of the best of an artist's work, but the Chills were, up till their last album, a singles band, so this works perfectly, collecting all their singles, up through the magnificent "Soft Bomb." Oh, and if that name sounds familiar, Justin Harwood left after the band's breakup to join Luna. This comp gets it all right, with thoughtful track sequencing, great liner notes, and good sound. These guys had the nerve to write a song, call it "Heavenly Pop Hit," and get away with it. 'Nuff said. Get this and "Soft Bomb," and you've got the best of their great career.

5 out of 5 stars Maybe the Only Elgar Compilation You'll Ever Need........2006-12-07

Naxos' "Very Best Of Elgar" compilation is probably the most comprehensive overview ever of Edward Elgar's best known work. For those who are unfamiliar with this great British composer, this double-CD set serves as a perfect introduction to his music. Two out of five of his famous "Pomp and Circumstance" marches are here as well as excerpts from his two symphonies, violin and cello concertos, the famous "Nimrod" movement from his "Enigma Variations" and the "Cockaigne Overture".
Also included in this set are lesser known works such as excerpts from his Violin Sonata, String Quartet, Piano Quintet and choral works (Ave verum corpus, The Apostles and The Dream of Gerontius).
Each disc features over 70 minutes of music and includes brief annotations about the music in the CD booklet.
With all this said, "The Very Best Of Elgar" is a very satisfying compilation and is very well put together.
Great Collection.
