Excellent performer.......2007-03-09

This plates are wonderful. I was charmed, and when I close my eyes now, I see scenes with American in Paris or Porgy and Bess but my favorite piece of music is Rhapsody in Blue. It's more than excellent is fantastic. Jack Gibbons perfectly feels the unique tone Gershwin's music, the mixture rythms of jazz with influences of impressionists and clear and beauty melodies.

A unique project.......2006-11-23

Gibbons' undertaking is unique: to reconstruct and then execute and record the note-for-note playing of Gershwin as documented on the composers' piano rolls, sound recordings and certain published arrangements. I agree with the reviewer who points out that the result is like a library and not a recital you sit back and listen to (or get up and dance to). In fact Gibbons does some editing of his "library" now and then, and clearly documents it in his liner notes: in some reconstructions he augments accompaniment effects and even the melodic line itself. I don't mind that at all, especially as Gibbons scrupulously accounts for such tampering in his liner notes; but it seems to me that it is in this area of "tampering" that Gibbons the artist is asserting himself...which of course undermines the "library", the "historical archive": you have to search and read a bit to find out when you're hearing only Gershwin and when you're hearing some added Gibbons. I don't mind; Gibbons is a remarkable artist in his own right, not merely an impeccable documentarian. For sheer generosity of production Gibbons' Gershwin must also be unique: 4 cd's, scholar-level liner notes (yes, you need a magnifying glass to read them), and rock-bottom bargain price.

Gershwin historical, manic, perfect, archival.......2006-06-12

First: this is 4 high-end produced cd's (in low-end jewel cases) for the price of 2. The liner notes of all 4 cd's are condensed in a booklet of microscopic print, so you may need to spend the savings on a magnifying glass. MONEY WELL SPENT.
Second: Jack Gibbons plays (and has recorded) the Alkan op 39 etudes (he probably plays a lot more Alkan than that). For those of you not in the know, this is to say he has world-class chops, indeed history-class (Liszt, who never played his friend Alkan, at least in public). But it's also to say that Gibbons knows how to interpret and personalize fantastically difficult piano music. For me, his Alkan op 39 is personal and passionate and real (contrast the facile and over-pedalled Hamelin and the just-the-notes-ma'me Ringeissen). An appreciation of Gibbons' Alkan is important here because while his Alkan is uniquely personal (as such music must be, no matter how hard it is to play) his Gershwin is deliberately impersonal...which is to say: no pianist, no singer would want to reproduce what Gibbons has given us in these 4 cd's, and in fact few listeners will be able to listen for long to these 4 cd's without a respite, a break , some silence, some minimal styling from somebody (anybody) else...which brings me to
Third: This is an archive, not a recital. This is a library, not a program. There is no track-by-track contrast of moods here, no track-by-track concession to easy listening, varied delight, any more than a library shelf of novels is alphabetized by authors' last names as a concession to mood or fancy or taste of the searching patron. This is the documented Gershwin in his recording mode: manic, notey, clever, "on", and never, as generations of stylists found in him, ravishing, tender, longing, sweet, glad, hopeful...person-to-person, in a word. I can listen to these cd's about half an hour at a time, max. This is Gerwhsin, not Gibbons. And this is just one side of Gershwin. He died at 38, in the summer. Brain tumor. A lot of pain.
Finally, Jack Gibbons has given the world a uniquely valuable and easily available resource. Gibbons could now do us a service by playing us some Gershwin as he feels it, as it hits him and makes him sing (as Gershwin, our American Schubert, does to all of us, and as I think Alkan has done to Gibbons). I would love to see a Gershwin stylings by Gibbons now that Gibbons himself has made sure Gershwin in his authenticity is safe and sound.

Here's the whole Gershwin catalog at a great price... Five plus hours of bliss. Definately five stars!

Gibbons, according to a family friend and biographer Edward jablonski "recreates Gershwin's style." I'll never know. I can say this is a lively recording and has the perfect balance. It's neither stuffy and plodding or cute.

Classical Jukebox Vol I - A Vintage Oldie!.......2000-12-13

Many of the same pieces on this CD were recorded on a vintage LP vinyl album of the late 1960s, entitled "More Greatest Hits" by Eugene Ormandy and the Philadelphia Orchestra. But the CD is even better; the recordings originally may have been analog, but there are more of them. The choice of music and quality is typically Ormandy -- outstanding. Young music lovers just beginning to explore the classical repertoire will especially appreciate this CD. I highly recommend it.

J'AI UN FAIBLE POUR ORMANDY.......2000-02-13

I confess to having a soft spot for Eugene Ormandy. The programme on this compilation CD is most varied, it goes all the way from HUNGARIAN DANCE NO. 5 by Brahms to the SUNRISE THEME by R. Strauss. The sound is pure Ormandy, crisp and clean, the tempos are always measured and well executed. The recorded sound is beautiful. Only one reservation - the short pieces leave one wishing for more of the same. Someone please inform me when the Sony people put Ormandy's rendition of MOTU PERPETUO by Paganini on CD...

Any anthology that explores the dawn of phonograph recordings promises to be rough going: I can't discern anything meaningful from the primitive recordings by the legendary conductor Arthur Nikisch. However, everything is more clear and vivid after the implementation of the microphone in 1926, and this material occupies four of these five CDs. Still, some artists sound a bit inhibited, and it's frustrating that we're often given only one movement from concertos played by pianist Elly Ney and cellist Enrico Mainardi. However, seasoned collectors will find recordings by Victor de Sabata, Paul Van Kempen, and others that they never even knew existed, plus a great, little-known 1943 performance of Schumann's Symphonic Etudes by Geza Anda. The set is crowned by an emphatic, rugged, deeply felt complete 1941 performance of the Mozart Requiem conducted by Bruno Kittl. The clarity of the remasterings is often amazing. --David Patrick Stearns

Sorry...I heard only fifth disc in this set........2000-12-06

I'm very sorry because I bought only fifth disc in this set. So, I don't review all of CDs. Bruno Kittel(1870-1948) was founder and conductor of his chorus-Bruno-Kittel-Chor. It was one of very highest vocal groups in German-speaking countries. They achieved many contributions. In 1928, Bruno-Kittel-Chor recorded first complete SP of Beethoven's Missa solemnis(with Lotte Leonard, Elenor Schlosshauer-Reynolds, Eugen Transky, Wilhelm Guttman and the Berliner Philharmoniker) in Deutsche Grammophon. Its SPs were imported to Japan, sold over 17000 sets. Its restored CD set were issued by Japan Polygram in 1998(I seeked this set so far but I have not this set because it was issued only Japan.). And they sung many times Beethoven's 9th Symphony with Oskar Fried(1929), Wilhelm Furtwangler(1937 and 1942) and many other conductors. In Third Reich, Kittel was premiered some of 'political' works include Christoph Muller's Deutsches Heldenrequiem-offered to Hitler-and participated concerts held by Nazi. For that reason, Kittel was buried in post-war German musical scene and chorus were disorganized. In World War II, they recorded for Deutsche Grammophon-Bach's Matthaus-Passion(1942. except 18 numbers) and Mozart's Requiem(1941)-twice. It's a last recordings they sung. In this fifth CD contains complete Requiem and final chorus in Matthaus-Passion(St.Matthew Passion). When I heard this recording first, very surprised. Part of Introitus' soprano solo part and Offertorium's last refrain, verses related 'Jewish' were erased and replaced other Latin words(Sion->coelis, Jerusalem->hic in terra, Abrahae->Domini). It's a Nazi's sensorship obviously. What a cruel purges! But they performed very humanistic-added Romantic a little-this last work by Mozart. In solo parts, soloists-Tilla Briem, Gertrud Freimuth, Walther Ludwig and Fred Drissen-sung very moved with rich German accents. And choral parts-especially Dies irae and Lacrimosa, they performed with fear and tears probably. And they sung in Kyrie and Communio's difficult fugue part very superbly. Certainly, they are very highest chorus in German. I think it's a best of pre-war and wartime Requiem recording with Bruno Walter's live recording in 1937. But, final chorus in Matthaus-Passion is 'too' romantic performance. Bach's taste disappeared 'perfectly' in this recording. For that reason, this recording is not re-issue by CD present day. And this CD contains other two small choral works sung by Thomanenchor Leipzig-Brahms' In stiller Nacht conducted by Karl Straube(1930) and Anonymous Christkindleins Wiegenlied. Restoration quality is not bad. But scratch noise remained in part(very high in Introitus' opening and some other parts). I think Deutsche Grammophon's staff were restored like a original SP added frequency.

Perennially satisfying performances........2002-12-25

Gathered together here, on 10 CDs, are some of the major recording projects of Bruno Walter's last years. In many cases the performances were the last he recorded commercially. Most of the Mozart symphonies he did again. Of special interest in the Mozart items heard here, however, are the rehearsal sequences that preceded the recording of Mozart's "Linz" Symphony. Uniquely articulate amongst conductors, whether rehearsing or writing, he here gently but firmly moulds each movement into shape, then lays down his baton and says, "Now, we record".

Perhaps the performances that have won the highest praise are the Brahms symphonies found here, especially Nos. 2 and 3. Indeed, some reviewers continue to head their list of top recommendations of these works with these 1960 recordings. Everything here was recorded between 1949 and 1961, either in New York or in Los Angeles.

By and large, Walter's best-recorded performances remain for me, after umpteen hearings, amongst the most perennially satisfying of any that were achieved by the great C20th century conductors. You'll certainly find many great ones here, and in the other boxed sets in this Bruno Walter Edition.
