Inspired by Frances Hodgson Burnett's novel of the same name, The Secret Garden was set apart from the beginning by the composition of its creative team. Not many Broadway shows can boast a female composer (Lucy Simon), director (Susan H. Schulman), librettist/lyricist (Marsha Norman), and producer/set designer (Heidi Landesman)--not to mention an 11-year old (Daisy Eagan) in the lead. This story of a little girl who helps her grieving uncle and sickly cousin regain a taste for life is a delicate, lovely achievement. Steeped in moody Victoriana, it should enchant those who enjoy a more understated style of musical theater. This musical is one of my very favourites and I highly reccommend this recording both to lovers of the show or anyone looking to enjoy a new musical. The song selection provides a good picture of the story, with several bits of scenes and libretto. Beautiful cd.

Wonderful soundtrack!.......2007-05-31

I recently read the book (The Secret Garden) to my 7-year-old daughter prior to taking her to see the musical. She enjoyed the play very much so I ordered the soundtrack. She has been listening to it daily while dancing and singing along. The performances are very good and the music is lovely.

With 82 customer reviews already in place, it's difficult to add anything new except BUY THIS WONDERFUL RECORDING BEFORE SONY/BMG SENDS IT TO THE DUST BIN!!!!! Personally, I was enchanted by Lucy Simon's music, especially by "Lilly's Eyes" and "How Could I Ever Know?" Rebecca Luker (Lilly's Ghost) and Robert Westenberg (Dr. Craven) are in especially fine voice, and - gratefully - Mandy Patinkin isn't nearly as irritating as he so often has become. But the show rests on the shoulders of twelve-year-old Daisy Eagan, the 1991 Tony Award winner for Best Featured Actress in a Musical, and she carries it very well, indeed.

Although not the stuff of which big, splashy mega-hits are made, and in spite of fairly negative reviews (I direct you to Frank Rich's "New York Times" review on theater2.nytimes.com), THE SECRET GARDEN enjoyed a modest run of 709 performances. With its gloomy story line, brooding characters, and soaring, Verdi-esque melodies, perhaps it's better suited to an opera house than to the Broadway stage. And with a few revisions, I wouldn't be surprised if THE SECRET GARDEN joins CANDIDE in opera company repertoires.

Incidentally, in case your're interested: Lucy Simon and her song writer/singer sister Carly recorded a couple of folk albums back in the 60s - "The Simon Sisters" & "Cuddlebug." Now availble on one CD entitled "Winkin', Blinkin' and Nod," those 25 songs are guaranteed to delight and enchant you, as Lucy's melodies and Marsha Norman's lyrics for THE SECRET GARDEN also delight and enchant. Better order "W,B,& N" right away. In this age of bottom-line-means-everything, who knows how long it will remain availble.

An Original Cast Recording of any Broadway Musical has many obstacles to overcome from the outset: not only do the music and lyrics have to be enjoyable, and the arrangements must be intriguing, but the recording also must somehow impart the feel of actually BEING in the audience of the Broadway show. Most Cast Recordings fall miserably short of these requirements. Happily, THE SECRET GARDEN, succeeds where most others fail. THE SECRET GARDEN, with music by Lucy Simon and lyrics by Marsha Norman, is a lush, magnificent recording filled with some of the most beautiful and soaring operatic music I have ever heard on or off the Broadway stage. In the classic style of Broadway genius Stephen Sondheim, there are no "puff pieces" on this CD...each song is necessary to advance the story, and once the listener has enjoyed the CD, they will, without doubt, feel they had a front row seat for this lovely bouquet of a show. Since there are 36 different cuts on this CD (after all, most of the dialogue is sung, in true operatta form) it is extremely difficult to choose the musical standouts. The opening of the CD, which sets the tone of this story, is nothing short of brilliant, as it packs a lot of information so effortlessly into song. "Lilly's Eyes" as sung by Mandy Patinkin, who's character is lamenting the death of his wife, is chillingly beautiful, as is the haunting duet "Come To My Garden". The CD's show stopper is a rousing rendition of an inspirational song called "Hold On", and is sure to become a Broadway classic. The show's cast, including Daisy Eagen as the little girl around whom most of the action takes place, Mandy Patinkin as her Uncle, John Babcock, Alison Fraser, and Rebecca Luker have some of the finest operatic voices ever heard on ANY stage. This is a show with a true heart, a brilliant soul, and is, in short a soaring celebration of the Broadway theatre at its finest! Run...don't walk...to buy this CD. I can't recommend it highly enough.

fantastic CD.......2007-03-22

Even though this is a cast recording from the 90's,
it's absolutely wonderful. I love it and play it a lot.
After I bought mine, I lent it to my sister who asked me if I
could order 2 for her, because she wants to give one as a gift.
I highly recommend it to everyone.

Somewhere within those stylistic borders you will encounter the European duo Secret Garden. The popular twosome--Irish violinist Fionnuala (fi-NOO-la) Sherry and Norwegian pianist/keyboardist Rolf Lovland--have attracted a sizable following with their heart-touching specialty: a wistful, violin-rooted, pop-folk-classical melange that often strikes the ear as a film score in search of some delicate romantic tale. Songs from a Secret Garden is the duo's debut recording from 1995, and it principally offers a series of pensive dialogues between Sherry's stately violin and Lovland's subdued piano, yielding equal measures of sweetness and melancholy. Whistles, pipes, percussion, strings, and ethereal voices serve as embellishments. At times you may sense you're being serenaded by strolling musicians with a heavy sentimental streak; at other times you may feel genuinely moved--perhaps by something as lovely as the reverential "Sigma" and its sublime, Gregorian-like choral passages. Oh, Wow! This is a cd that will be liked by all who enjoy M E H D I, E N Y A or even Loreena Mckinnett. It is the very essence of good new age. So tranquil, yet so spirited, this cd is a refreshing break from my well-worn collection, I just keep wanting to listen to it over and over again. I am amazed! It reminds me somewhat of Celtic Women, but still very unique. This is music to the soul. Absolutely relaxing, as well.

Violins and more violins.......2007-05-29

Not quite what I had expected. A CD of violin with violins and some piano and yet another violin. Which, for some maybe just what you want. It doesn't exactly transport me elsewhere like Inner Peace by Steve Halpern. It makes great background music for our office but otherwise, I haven't put it in my car to listen to while I travel.

Soothing Music, Food for the soul.......2007-02-09

Like most who stumbled on this beautiful CD, I bought the CD because the CD shop selling it happened to be playing it - and I was immediately captivated and deeply touched by it. It is like a breathe of freshness in the sands of commerce, a clear pond of tranquil water that reflects your soul and yet it is so deep in emotions...pulling your heart strings. Its fragile, naked and angelic...yet it is so sincere.
I enjoy MEHDl, Enya, Loreena Mckinnett, David Foster etc. But this a beautiful and rare production that I enjoy a tad more.

Beautiful & romantic Waltz music.......2007-01-23

The songs on this collection are all very beautiful. My favorite is the "Ode to Spring," an enchanting melody one cannot forget. I can listen to this CD over and over again. I bought two additional copies for my friends and have made another copy so that I can play it in my car.

I also purchased this CD based on the reviews and I'm truly glad that I did. This is Mehdi at his best. I've only listened to it a a few times since I received it, but I know I'll be playing it often. It's especially nice in the car, because it brings the surrounding natural scenery to life. I bought this based on other review I read on Amazon cold-turkey. It's nice, but not up to the calibur of other albums I have in the same genra.

I wouldn't not recommend it, but I wouldn' rave over it either.

Gorgeous sound !.......2007-06-25

A DJ here in Austin insists on calling Mehdi, "The Jewel of public television." While many of his fans are probably jealous that there's actually a station here that gives him airtime (KGSR, 107.1 -- a near identical twin of KBCO Boulder, 97.3), I've patiently combed public TV listings for months, and never seen his name once. Woe is me!

Ever since some cognoscenti used a snippet of his "Wedding Song" as background on an episode of "Northern Exposure," I've been hooked on Mehdi's compelling blend of inspiring melodies and middle eastern rhythms. The California Native and his bandmates are wizards with their instruments. Volume 8 Instrumental Paradise is a must for any fan of Mehdi's music; and I can think of no better way for someone unfamiliar with his sound to become acquainted.

But not with Secret Garden; I now own four of their albums, plus this excellent collection, and have never been disappointed in a single song. They are terrific musicians; their songs, mostly their own compositions, are uplifting, soothing, or toe-tapping, depending on the song. I can't wait for the next CD!

Earthsongs is a curious title for an album that is unrooted in the firmament and seems far removed from any traditions therein. Instead, the duo of Irish violinist Fionnuala Sherry and Norwegian keyboardist Rolf Lovland make music lost in a gauzy haze of nostalgia and sentimentality. On Earthsongs, they move further from the safely exotic, Celtic-meets-New-Age sound in which they forged their early successes and float down an easy-listening path. Celtic flavors do turn up on a pair of sanitized jigs: "Reel" and "Daughters of Erin," but they have the authenticity of a theme restaurant. Bringing in pop-classical tenor Russell Watson for the maudlin ballad "Always There" doesn't help. With this album, Secret Garden takes a seat in the faux-classical lounge, a room occupied by artists like Percy Faith, Bert Kaempfert, 101 Strings, and other forgotten meisters of orchestral pop who were washed aside by the breaking waves of rock in the early '60s. --John Diliberto

Potential buyer should, like so many had said, get the imported version that has "Silence Speaks". In my opinion, "Silence Speaks" and "Searching For The Past" are two of the most beautiful song tracks on this CD (they balance each other well too - being one heavy on violin and the other on keyboard).

Overall, I found this to be a great music CD. Tracks are well balanced between Secret Garden's signature melodies and other, for lack of words, new age styles/fusion(i.e. Celtic). I do wish their future releases include more of their signature melodies though.

Sorry I put off buying.......2006-09-10

I am a long-time fan of Secret Garden and eagerly awaited the release of this CD. After reading the reviews, though, I was hesitant to spend the money. I just received this CD and I'm sorry I put off buying it for so long. Yes, the music is different from their previous releases, but it shows their growth and willingness to try different things. If you listen to all their albums in order, Earthsongs provides a refreshing change, and you will hear how they have grown over the years. Whether they continue to explore and evolve on the path they have started with Earthsongs, or go back to their previous sound, I will still buy and continue to be a fan. I will always love their music!! (I gave this CD 4 stars because White Stones and Once in a Red Moon are still my favorites)

How can anyone go wrong with Secret Garden? If their music resonates with your soul - this CD continues a legacy and musical tradition. Sleepsong is wonderful (near perfect) and contains the spiritual messages that resonate with my soul which makes Secret Garden truly special.

I've read other reviews touting the CD as to pat and not up to snuff. I've found it otherwise--the music is varied--not all Celtic, but that is refreshing to me, as are the vocals. Sometimes in this world, some soothing uplifting lyrics are just what the doctor ordered. Some are even hummable! Some of the Celtic instrumentals are toe-tappers and others are haunting. Every time a new Secret Garden album comes along, it sounds just that bit more special than the last, and I expect the bubble to break and everyone will be talking about them. However, to date they still seem to be low key and little heard of. Maybe this wonderful album will be the one to turn that around!
The mix of Norwegian classical orchestration with the most beautiful and evocative in Celtic music, makes for a sublimely uplifting and relaxing experience. This is not just chill out music, but music to inspire.
The collaborators, particularly Brian Kennedy and Karen Matheson add a wonderful extra element which lets the music really breathe, and means the listener will never get bored with the CD - you'll be able to listen to this over and over and over again, making this the best value CD you will buy this year.

"Once In a Red Moon" is a beautiful album, probably my favorite by Secret Garden. I especially love "Greenwaves" and the original version of "You Raise Me Up", but the other ten tracks are also wonderful. This music is beautiful, soothing, and artistically done. Also, it's easy to listen to over and over - I have listened to it so many times, but I'm not tired of it yet.

The Best so Far.......2005-12-04

I have Songs from..., White Stones, and Dawn of a New Century. I love all three, but I believe Once in a Red Moon is the best so far. I was concerned about there being three vocals, but the music is so good that they are written to that they don't distract from the others. I liked the first three releases so much that I was surprised that they could come out with one better, but I believe they did. They have such a beautiful rich sound, that I listen to them over and over and worry about getting tierd of it, but I don't. I can't say that about many artists. If you like the first three releases, don't miss this one.

Very good, just not their best........2004-09-20

Speaking as an avid Secret Garden fan, I must regretfully say that I had some problems with this album. First and foremost: WAY too many vocal tracks. In their first albums, Secret Garden was an almost exclusively instrumental group. It was nice to leave some interpretation up to the listener, and be enveloped in pure musical bliss (especially in the album White Stones). This is not to say that there weren't some memorable tracks in Red Moon, quite to the contrary. I just found myself skipping ahead to the "good" stuff. Also, I found the chord progressions in "You Raise Me Up" to be unmistakenly similar to Bette Midler's "Wind Beneath My Wings." Try listening to the song and insert the other lyrics, you'll laugh. Please don't misunderstand me; this is a very decent album, with some very beautiful moments ("Duo", "Elegie", and "Belonging" to name a few), and I would recommend this album to any fan of the group. This album simply isn't their best.

Pleasant, romantic music for the soul.......2007-06-27

As a fan of "Secret Garden" I have enjoyed this CD for weeks now. I fall asleep to it almost every night. It is not my very favorite, prefering the turn of the century one, but I do alternate listening to both. I am looking forward to a new album, as the recently purchsed one has mostly repeats on it.
Talented musicians, composers and singers make this CD incredibly enjoyable and I do say I love it.

This is by far my favorite Secret Garden CD and their only all instumental CD. I prefer the allegro selections , despite the fact that they consider them to be filler material . The musicianship is first rate and you would never know that the individual songs were recorded in pieces , unless you visited their website . This CD has , what the Grateful Dead refered to as , the X factor . Everything on each selection flows together as if all of the musicians were in the same studio doing it live . Fionnuala Sherry dominates the entire work as the featured artist , but certainly doesn't overpower the rest of the fine musicians involved . I find it remarkable that this CD has never received a major award .

Secret Garden is the best discovery of my life as far as music goes. The violin is so soft and beautiful, and the singing is ethereal. I cannot get enough of this group! I highly recommend White Stones. I love Irish music and they have a lot of songs that have the Irish Celtic sound, and I just cannot say enough good things about this CD.

Enchanting.......2004-09-25

Secret Garden's "Whitestones", is an amazing CD. The talent of Rolf Lovland and Fionnula Sherry is unprecedented...their styles compliment each other perfectly. "Whitestones" is a beautiful compilation of instrumentals, highlighting Rolf's songwriting and piano ability as well as Fionnula's amazing and haunting violin melodies. The songs on "Whitestones" are perfect to listen to after a long and stressful day, in the bath, and they are perfect to listen to while falling asleep as the songs are very ethereal and dreamlike. I have been listening to this disc for about six years and it is still in my main CD rotation, in fact I used the song "Hymn" at my wedding as I walked down the isle. This CD is a must to own for those who appreciate New Age and Celtic music. Their other albums are also amazing, and I am proud to say that I own every one of their releases and I am looking forward to their next release which will be out soon!

Of course, we couldn't expect time to freeze its relentless path and forever preserve the Welsh sensation Charlotte Church in a chrysalis of precocious youth. And yet, at 15 and now taking bolder steps into expanding her repertory on Enchantment, the soprano remains a marvel of a prodigy. Here, she scours a wider range of sources than on her previous albums. Church moves with breathtaking ease from classic Broadway (West Side Story, Show Boat, South Pacific) to traditional Celtic, film ballads, and even a couple of high-operatic numbers. Church's straightforward approach to the melody of "La Habanera" may not exactly be what Bizet had in mind for his Carmen, but fans will get double pleasure out of the singer's exquisite duet with herself on the haunting "Flower Duet" from Delibes's Lakmé. What's more, there's a greater freedom of expression and sense of how to shape a phrase in many of these tracks--notice how much there is to savor, for instance, in "The Water Is Wide" and "Carrickfergus." Charlotte has a producing voice, not quite mature, but it's bearable. I don't really appreciate opera unless your name is Sarah Brightman, Hayley Westenra or Holly Stell. Carrickfergus and Somewhere are decent for her voice, but "The Prayer" and "The Water is Wide" is very damaging to my ears due to the fact, her Italian sucks, her range is not wide enough in "Water".

I love this cd and have had it quite a while. I was just enjoying it again today and thought I'd write a review because I do enjoy it so much. It's just a fun, enjoyable album. Pretty orchestration, a lovely voice, nice to sing along with. Especially at the top of my lungs in the car (alone when no one can hear me!)
I really don't know why one would NOT enjoy this cd.

I bought this CD when I was still in high school, singing soprano I & II in choir. It's not bad but she does much better than even some older kids attempting soprano. I think due to the popularity she gained this poor girl has endured much harsh criticism. True, we can't cut her slack JUST because she is a little girl but on the other hand for someone to sing opera at that age her work IS superb. Whether she's a prodigy or victim of over-ambitious parents & media, she deserves credit where it's due. At least she DID break out as some-what of a mainstream artist & exposed this type of music to those who stereotyped it as fat ladies w/powder-white make-up belting out notes that would shatter glass. Some say the same for Josh Groban who broke into the scene as a mainstream tenor/baritone vocalist. As far as skills & talent, he not the greatest either but many people adore his music. The same credit should go to Charlotte Church.

As far as feedback on the quality...
It's VERY hard to believe the deliverance of her performance. A 15-year-old (even younger on her debut cd) singing songs about love & being able to see the world seems silly. Cracking voice? Yeah, you can really tell she had a difficult time hitting the high note in The Laughing Song because it got all air-y. Honestly, some trained sopranos over-shoot their high notes too & get extremely SHARP so I didn't mind her air-i-ness. I think she did a great job on The Flower Duet though. It still has the same relaxing quality as some other versions I've heard from various movie soundtracks. But compare this to the likes of professionals - real professionals - she's merely tolerable. Try Sarah Brightman if you want to listen to some nice musical sopranos. She even has some pretty remakes of modern songs.

Enchantment Indeed!.......2006-08-20

This CD is simply amazing! However, I am sick and tired of people pressuring her to be someone that she's not! Trying to fit into today's popular music scene, Charlotte has turned to pop, and her career isn't flying well because of it! Her voice is simply amazing for opera, and I will not hear another insulting word about her!

Anyways, the CD is genius! Tonight from "West Side Story" is beautifully sung. Carrickfergus, Habanera, and Bali Ha'i are sung with a hypnotizing beauty. Papa, Can you Hear Me and The Flower Duet are amazing as well!

However, on The Flower Duet, Church's vocals seem strained a bit. The Little Horses is a decent piece, a remake of the standard English folk song. I prefer it straight instead of a varied beat, so that Church's voice could soar on and on.

From my First Moment is a fairly nice song, but The Water is Wide is simply amazing! Her vocals are soaring and mezmerizing!

Can't Help Lovin' Dat Man is NOT the song for her, because she puts a weird accent on the song, like she's trying to sound like a hoodlum! The Laughing Song is something that SHOULD NOT be tried by children, because the vocals are so strained! If I Loved You is a simple yet wonderful piece!

A Bit of Earth and Somewhere are both beautiful pieces, with excellent work from the orchestra.

Overall, this CD is very beautiful! BUY IT!

Secret Garden's formula is plain to hear. They have the lush string orchestrations of Yanni, the layered vocals of Clannad and Enya, and the stage-show Celtica of Riverdance. In the past these elements have weighed down the music of Irish violinist Fionuala Sherry and Norwegian keyboardist Rolf Lovland with a sweetness that would make tiramisu taste like poi. On Dawn of a New Century, they finally dance closer to the line that divides schlock from serenity, beauty from the banal. Capercaillie singer Karen Matheson gives a haunting vocal performance on "Prayer," surrounded by Clannad-like harmonies. "Children of the River" is a cinematic expanse with Asian overtones, while "Lore of the Loom" swoops through orchestral landscapes that could be Ireland or Norway. "Once in a Red Moon" is how I discovered the sounds of Secret Garden. Immediately I fell in love with the lush, peaceful and dreamy sounds this duo has become so famous for. The only reason I don't give this CD 5 stars is purely for subjective reasons - I don't think it's their best, but I still think it is definitely worth owning. You'll enjoy it, I'm certain. Every time we play any of Secret Garden's music in our radio broadcast, they are one of the very few groups that stay in our programming as long as they do, because listeners love them so much. A good buy for your collection. Jon

I'm exceedingly picky when it comes to my music; I don't want to waste my time listening to just anything. With that said, I can definitely recommend anything by Secret Garden. I ADORE Secret Garden.

Secret Garden has flat-out shocked me (in a very, very good way). When I discovered them, I felt as if I had finally found the style of music I had been looking for. I say this solemnly: Secret Garden is a rare jewel of which the kind does not seem to exist anymore.

The sound is a rich violin-and-piano mix (with other instruments, too). It's beautiful and unbelievable; you have to hear it for yourself.

The song "Children of the River" is gorgeous; it's a wonderful Asian/Celtic fusion and one of my favorite songs of all time!

On this album, I highly recommend "Elan," "Dreamcatcher," "Sona," "In Our Tears," "Children of the River" (!!!!!!!), "Evensong," "Aria," "Divertimento" (!!!!!), "Aquarell," & "Dawn of a New Century!" As you can see, that's practically the entire CD...so you know what my suggestion is!

Secret Garden's Dreamcatcher weaves an ethereal pageant of wonder and joy. My initial thought was "It sounds like a movie soundtrack of some mysterious delightful romance." Liner notes say "People tell us that our music is 'visual' and 'evocative' It has been suggested it music to a film yet to be seen." Imagine that!
If you like Celtic music, you will love Secret Garden.

Magical.......2006-04-16

My husband and I signed up for a helicopter tour of glaciers near Juneau AK. The weather had been quite foggy/rainy all day and I was certain that they would cancel the trip. Then I was terrified when they didn't - -sure we'd crash into something with all the mist.

The pilot put in the Dreamcatcher CD as he prepared for takeoff and what had been intensely stressful for me became one of the most peaceful and beautiful -- even magical -- experiences of my life.

To this day, I can hear the music, close my eyes and be hovering over the glaciers. Or I can be looking at the pictures I took from the copter and hear the music in my mind.

The two are forever linked for me.

I like traditional/world/folk instrumentals, and contemporary instrumentals (such as those of Yanni). I don't particularly like Irish/Celtic music; however, I ADORE Secret Garden.

If you're new to Secret Garden, Dreamcatcher might provide you with a clue as to what they're about. Dreamcatcher is not my favorite of all the CDs graced by their name, but it does suffice in introducing one to the flavor and depth that constitutes Secret Garden.

Of these tracks, I recommend "Nocturne," "Moving," "Sona," "Passacaglia," "Elan," "In Our Tears," "Steps," "Adagio" (!!!!!), & "Dawn of a New Century."

Personally, a few of my favorites are Dawn of a New Century for "Children of the River," earthsongs for "Fields of Fortune" and "Lotus," and once in a red moon for "Elegie." White Stones is also amazing, especially "Poéme" and "Sanctuary;" I think these 2 songs are about as lovely, deep, transcendent, meaningful, and emotional as is possible.

Secret Garden is, in a word, wonderful. If you enjoy excellent, introspective, unique, quality songs and instrumentals, then please consider this awesome duo of amazing talent! As far as I am concerned, they are unsurpassed.

What a great album! What a great album! I bought it from a bookstore as a tryout, and I'm IMPRESSED! The entire album is breathtaking (and I don't usually use this word), it starts with a great song (Nocturne), and ends with another great song (Last Present), and I'm disappointed when each song ends, craving for more. The vocals of this album is great, and the instrumentals are exceptional. Current New Age albums are not as good as this album. This album is up there with the other older New Age albums.
