4 out of 5 stars Diamond in the Rough.......2002-09-02

An overlooked, underated, seminal landmark of an album, not only for the Wailers but for Reggae in general. The production (Lee Perry), musical, and vocal arrangements on this album were groundbreaking. The Wailers experimented in ways they had not done before or after. Unique, original, raw, and stripped down. If you think "Legend" is the best the Wailers had to offer then this may not be your cup of tea. But if you're a budding Wailers/Reggae fan looking to expand your horizons this would be essential for your collection.

5 out of 5 stars The original Wailers at a point of transition.......2001-12-12

Here is a real band, with a certain spark, a tautness that seems to be lacking from the mature Wailers, and from 70's reggae in general. I find their very next release, African Herbsman, already considerably less exciting. This is one of the tightest, freakiest rhythm-section recordings I've ever heard. Always that behind-the-beat feeling, but even at its most laid-back it reminds me of James Brown or something in its supple, effortless complexity, the alert sensitivity of each musician. Listen to the bass lines too closely and you are at risk of seizure. Staccatto organ and plucky, out-of-tune guitars fill out the chords, but the star of the music is the percussion. There seems to be a second guitarist who does nothing but scratch his instrument like a washboard. And the loudest thing in nearly every mix is the shaker, yes the shaker, three times louder than the vocals, which is the kind of pleasurable eccentricity you expect from a Lee Perry production.

Then there are the songs, which are great, still showing a direct influence from American R&B (there's a cover of "Try Me"), and he doesn't seem to be preaching about Jah all time, or maybe he is, but I can't understand a word of the delightfully thick dialect. The Wailers' all-male, falsetto backups have a humor to them, like singing forest animals in an old cartoon. You will recognize several of the songs ("Soul Rebel", "Duppy Conqueror", "Corner Stone", "400 Years", "Soul Almighty") from later versions, re-recorded for the U.S. market. Predictably, the versions here are far fresher.

These tracks were recorded in 1970 and originally released in '74 under the name Soul Rebel - not to be confused with a later collection called Soul Rebels - and I believe there's something else out there called Rasta Revolution - but don't be led astray, this is the one that begins with the song 'Mr. Brown'. Available domestically now, for the first time ever! I'm curious to hear the 2-disc set called Rebel Revolution, which apparently offers extended mixes of these songs and others from the same period.

5 out of 5 stars Desert Island Reggae.......2005-06-17

If I had to choose an album to take on a deset island then it would be this one.
I bought this cd for one track...NUH SKIN UP which I had on a 12" single back in 79 when I lived in a bedsit in Bristol but I never had this album...but what I have found out listening to this today is I had rythms from this on a dub or dj album someone like U BROWN orBARRY BROWN and the backing tracks were awsome and I never realized they cam from this album so I have had a real pleasant surprise but now I have to track down the dub album with the dj I can't really remember.
So take it from me a guy who grew up from rock steady to reggae this album will be one of the best you will ever hear for it's social content, superb dub-rythm arrangment.THE BEST so I want to know in this world of pure rubbishy girly wirly bands that turn out pure trash noise with total unforgetable lyrics and yet you have someone like KEITH HUDSON who made this masterpiece why oh why arn't these reggae artists given the credit for what they deserve.Everyone goes on about Bob Dylon and the likes by him who made good social music then we have the people from Jamaica who this sort of thing was just normal everyday music but with the irresistable rythms we all love.Somewhere out there something has to answer.
If anyone knows the albums I am talking about please contact it would be great.blacksmith877@hotmail.com

5 out of 5 stars Definitely one of the best.......2005-03-01

I fully agree with Ally about this album being one of the best reggae albums ever. Maybe it's the best. I can think of only one reggae album that is this good: 'Green Valley' by Militant Barry, produced by: Keith Hudson. It's more or less an even weirder version of this album and as far as I know not available on CD.

5 out of 5 stars still sounds fresh.......2002-07-11

Keith Hudson - `Rasta Communication'.
Undoubtedly Keith Hudson's greatest album, with a set of classic songs like `Felt we Felt the Strain', the legendary ` Rasta Communication' and the full length of the `Nah Skin Up' disco mix.
It was voted record of the year in 1978 and still sounds fresh even 18 years after Hudson's early death from cancer. The sound from this stunning album is totally unique, with a proud and righteous feel to it. As if Hudson's fantastic vocals, production and arrangements weren't enough, the album also contains an awesome line up of musicians, including Sly and Earl `Chinna' Smith.
This is definitely one of reggae's finest ever albums, with a fantastic set of songs way ahead of their time. I can promise you, you will never find another reggae album, from any decade, with this kind of quality and class.

5 out of 5 stars Surprisingly Great.......2005-02-11

This is one of those Cds that you look at and recognize most or some of the songs and think that ut might be a good collection of popular(commercial) reggae songs. I picked up this Cd for that reason but I have yet to put it down. There are some golden tunes and one-hit-wonders that should be a part of everyone's reggae collection. This is the type of album you could play at a party and keep the people moving. Its also great for driving around. It is not a roots album by any means. There is a heavy bass and hip-hop tempo.

Songs worth extra mention: track #9 'Boom Shak A-Tack' is one of Born Jamericans' best with a upful energy and great sound. #11 'Dolly My Baby' Supercat, which is decent but gets real good at the end with a cut from Third Eye, Puff Daddy, and Biggie Smalls. #14 'Take it Easy' a great Mad Lion rude boy cut (unfortunately it was Mad Lion's only good song. The beat was doctored by KRS One). #16 'Wings of the Morning' Capleton and Method Man (nuff said). There are many other great songs as well. Well worth the money!

This is one of the nicest collections of reggae and dancehall songs you could ever find. You've heard all of these before, and all you need to do is insert the Cd and wind up ya waist! From Shaggy to Chaka Demus & Pliers to Mad Cobra to Mad Lion to "Action" by Terror Fabulous to Maxi Priest, you can't go wrong. Enjoy!

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The Forgotten Man RETURNS!.......2006-01-05

If you at all know who Josie Mel is prior to reading this review then there's a good chance that you either are planning to buy this album, or already have it. The reggae world all but forgot the artist who released his debut album, Freedom, not so long ago in 2003 and has been all but unseen since.

That all changed in '05 when one of the most unusual hits of the year became the massive Rasta Still Deh Bout, a combination between Mel and upstart Lutan Fyah. The song was both an intellectual and commercial success and was produced by German outfit, Minor 5 Flat 7's Brotherman. The same producer responsible for nearly masterful pieces by Turbulence, Luciano and Anthony B, amongst others. Rasta Still Deh Bout literally breathed life back into Mel's underrated career and made him into a viable artist again, he was always just as wicked though.

This, unsurprisingly, led to his second album, and it was undoubtedly one of the shining moments in regage in 2005. The best track si without a doubt the opening title track. Mel's smooth vocals blend wonderfully with Lutan's equally smooth (but aggressive) dj style, on a tune which outlines the story of a youth revealing himself as Rastafarian to his friends and family, major bi big tune.

Fittingly, the second best of the album is the second best tune, Consecrate Yourself, really smooth big song. Also check the excellent Hail H.I.M., He Lives of course, and Run Away. Also check the only other combination on the album, the truly massive And I Pray featuring the unknown Smokie Benz.

The other tunes are very good as well, which gave me the incentive to call this one a 5 star project (albeit a weak 5 star, 4.75 or so), but Josie Mel is clearly most comfortable at home on rootsier sounding backing and on more cultural lyrics. The singer truly excels in this area but he can also lift up the love song on tunes like All Over Your Face.

Overall, definitely call Rasta Still Deh Bout one of the best efforts of 2005 (and I did). The album (and song) marked the type of new hit that has been taking over roots reggae recently. Not just the big name recognizable talents such as Sizzla, Capleton and Luciano, but unheard of acts such as Lutan Fyah, Gyptian, Perfect and Hero just making purely good music, and good vibes. Definitely throw Josie Mel into that bunch and watch out for this artist in the future.

5 out of 5 stars The King of Dub.......2003-01-09

U Roy was the first and greatest DJ/dub-artist of the roots-dub-reggae era. Under the general umbrella of Jamaican reggae he was truly the King, second only to Bob Marley. "Rasta Ambassador" is probably his best-mixed and tightest work I have yet discovered. U Roy's dub cadences are hypnotic and when paired with the steady-yet-trippy, bass-heavy reggae riddms it becomes almost its own genre. I might call it "Space-reggae." U Roy presented a rhythmic style of dub that others who mimicked didn't seem to fully understand. When his howls and chants seem odd and out-of-place he then drops into a pocket of clever, mellow vocal percussion that plays masterfully against the tapestry of reggae power behind him. "Rasta Ambassador" is full of jewels, my personal favorite being "The Tide Is High." Get hooked on U Roy. It's well worth the ride.
