Amalia Rodrigues is the unchallenged queen of fado--the Portuguese equivalent of flamenco or blues--and one of the greatest singers on record. Her voice is rich and sinuous, with the soulful intensity of a Billie Holiday or Edith Piaf, but a warmth and sense of phrasing all her own. This retrospective ranges from her first recordings in 1952 up to 1970 and gives a superb picture of her work. The instrumentation is simple guitar and Portuguese mandolin, perfectly framing her aching laments and flowing melodies, like a gentler version of flamenco or a continental cousin of Cesaria Evora's morna. The songs include folk and popular material, but the emphasis is on the deep, passionate fado, and it doesn't get any better than this. --Elijah Wald
Customer Reviews:
A lovely overview of the preeminent fadista.......2007-05-07
While I'm no expert on Portuguese fado music, for the last few years I have been buying and listening to CDs from some of the most notable international performers. Many of them, especially Misia, draw inspiration from the late Amália Rodrigues--the most famous and adored singer of fado in the twentieth century. This collection spans several decades of her work, and all the tracks are strong. Priced modestly, the "Art of Amália" is an excellent choice to survey the tremendous skill and passion of this very important singer in the genre. It would make an excellent addition to any fado collection, and it could also make for a nice introduction to fado for fans of world music generally.
amalia.......2006-03-15
What can I say about this magnificent fadista that hasn't already been said. As far as I'm concerned no one can ever even come close to this fantastic artist. She puts so much feelings into every song that I can not help but to get teary eyed.
The voice of the "Iberian Blues".......2005-08-03
Fado is a traditional portuguese music that has many meanings that cannot be found in a dictionary. It deals with fate and "saudade", a feeling best described as a melancholic reminescence of times past, but can also deal with day to day life, its joys and sadnesses. It often is described as the Portuguese answer to Blues, although musically they have very little in common. Amalia was the voice that brought international recognition to this musical style, and what makes her music so special and universally appealing is that her voice transcends the lyrics and stories she sings about. Even if you do not understand portuguese - the sounds of the guitar and "violao" in the background highlighted by her imense range and depth will haunt you into thoughtfulness. Her music is best enjoyed in solitude as it can inspire reflection and introspective. Now, don't let my intelectual musings scare you away - listen and discover it for yourself and find out if you have some "saudade" in you.
Poor quality sound.......2005-03-09
The sound quality of this CD is so poor that I can't bear to listen to it. There is a lot of distortion. If I try to listen to the CD using headphones, then the channel separation becomes a problem; I hear one guitar and the singer's voice in one ear, and the other guitar (too loud) in the other ear. If I put the CD in my CD jukebox, then I cringe every time one of the songs on this disc is played, because it is recorded at a really high level, and that, combined with the distortion, hurts my ears.
The Queen of Fado.......2005-01-28
To listent to Amália Rodrigues is to be hynotized by the sheer parodxical nature of life's eternal beaty and never-ending sadness. Never have I heard such a hauntingly beautiful voice. Her talent is unmatched. You may not understand her language, but the beauty is, you don't have to understand her words to understand her emotion.

Queen she is. Her Best CD.......2005-02-25
You have to have this CD if any of the below is true.
1.You like Fado, the Best Musical Style of Portugal.
2.You already know that Amalia is indeed the Queen of Fado
3.You are aware of first two and now have to know that this is her Best CD.
4.You have absolutely no clue about Fado or Amalia, but are musically adventurous, because on both counts you will be amply rewarded with immeasurable joy.
Basically you have NO CHOICE but to have this particular CD since it will be your best introduction to both Fado and Amalia
Why now I have an urge to mention Cesaria Evora? Because she is another Queen that sings in Portuguese (she is from Cabo Verde)
Even though she is not a representative of Fado, she has her sad and romantic style common with Fado. She is another gem that you have to discover in deep see diving of world music and be glad you did.
flat out one of the greatest recorded divas of any genre.......2004-01-14
Amalia's voice is just incredible. Her tone, her expression, her ability to shade pitch ever so slightly to emote. She's just flat out one of the greatest singers of the 20th century. Fans of fado of course know about her, but she ranks with Umm Kulthum, Judy Garland, Maria Callas, and few others who possess a great voice, seemingly limitless talent, and that most elusive of elements, soul. This recording or some such compilation should be in the collection of everyone who loves vocal music.
FERNANDO.......1999-12-02
AMALIA, who I had the opportunity to work with in 1993 / 1994 /1995 in USA and CANADA theaters I had the opportunity to visit often in her home in LISBON in RUA de SAO BENTO which soon will be a museum. You will be very much missed our hearts are empty without you. February 26, 2000 at THE TORRE DO POPULO Ponta Delgada SAO MIGUEL AZORES we will have a tribute in her honor dinner and show the funds will be for a dinner for ederly homes in her honor FERNANDO..........
QUEEN OF FADO.......1999-11-07
AMALIA died but she taught us alot. When I found out that she passed-away I left sad.The last time I saw her was at the VETERANS MEMORIAL AUDITORIM in PROVEDENCE RHODE ISLAND.AMALIA will be missed by us.
The best of the portuguese diva.......1999-10-17
Amalia died, but she lives in her music. This album isn't just a good one. It's a gift of the gods. If you like music, any kind of, you must have this or any Amalia's album. A must!

amalia.......2007-06-13
the best amalia cd.great sound and all the great traditional fado songs.
This voice can do no wrong.......2005-03-05
Amalia still reigns as the Queen of Fado, and this collection provides further evidence of why that is. This compendium includes selections recorded over a number of years, and provides a range of material from pure Fado to folksong. All of it is sung in Amalia's inimitable style. Powerful, emotive, fantastic. It's difficult to describe her voice if you are not familiar with Amalia. I consider her one of the great voices of the 20th century - and this from someone who routinely listens to Tebaldi, Schwartzkopf, and the like.
As an improvement over the 'Art of Amalia 1', this CD credits the musicians performing with her on Portugues guitar, etc. A wonderful selection of Fado that I would highly recommend.

Am¯lia's Breakthrough International Album, this Live Recording was Made at Paris' Legendary Olympia Hall in the Spring of 1956, at a Time When the Singer was Becoming the Toast of Paris and a Major Star in France. Released Originally in January of 1957, this Album Remains Still Today in the EMI Catalog, Proving the Unique Power of Am¯lia's Performance. She Has Seldom Been Better Captured on Stage Than on this Mesmerising Record.
Customer Reviews:
A hit in France, a hit all over the world.......2002-06-27
This beautiful recording of a live concert by Amália is a treat not only for her fans but for those music lovers who also love pieces of musical and cultural history. Recorded, according to most accounts, in 1957, Amália's second great presence on the mythical French concert hall, it shows the powers of Amália's beautiful voice at still an early stage of her international career, consolidated by her appearance in Paris in 1956, at the same stage. The freshness, power and beautiful colour of her voice is clearly shown in this recording, allthough it might still be submitted to technical treatment here and there. Also as an historical note, though Amália had already sung many times abroad with great success (in Europe in 1950, London in 1952, The USA and Mexico in 1953, and later on many times) her international success took off after she sang and starred in a French picture called "Les Amants du Tage" in 1955, singing one of her hit songs "Barco Negro", and was invited by the Olympia's impresario Bruno Coquatrix as the star of the first part of the show celebrating Josephine Baker's "adieu" to the stage in 1956. Immediately after a tremendous and sensational success, she was invited to act on a show of her own, as the main star, something she would repeat many times, in a total of about 10 seasons at the Olympia (unequalled by any other artist), from 1956 to 1992. France always cherished this extraordinary singer, cummulating her with honours (the Medal of the City of Paris in 1959, the Order of the Arts and Letters in 1970, the Golden Medal of the City of Paris in 1989, and the Legion d'Honneur in 1991, among many others in the country). So, the importance of this recording at the outset of her great international success, is only increased by the symbolic and magical atmosphere lived by those who listened and saw her at the Olympia. A great, great cd.

Customer Reviews:
The versatility of Amália.......2002-06-05
I have decided to rate this album a five-star one mainly because of Amália's voice and the power of her art. Though clearly unequal in the chosen songs, and here and then needing some remastering and care, this album includes some of the best french songs ever written for her or sung by Amália, showing that even when singing in a language other than her own, she achieved incredible results. The complitation also includes some portuguese songs running from folklore to popular Marches (special songs celebrating Portugal's and specially Lisbon's annual tribute to the country's favourite and more popular saints-St. Anthony, St. Peter and St. John),and Middle Age songs, but also extremely beautiful French romantic songs, including the beautiful "Aranjuez Mon Amour". It constitutes a special and rare treat.
