Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars I sing the body acoustic.......2007-03-16

The fact that music can be made by using not only the voice, but the entire human body as an instrument, is hardly news. There is, of course, the work of Bobby McFerrin, who's being doing this bit for over twenty years; more recently Bjork's "Medulla" goes in that direction.
But this ancient technique has a long tradition in Brazil, and one has to look not further than Naná Vasconcelos to have a proof. His albums for ECM, either alone, with Egberto Gismonti or the wonderful trio "Codona" are even prior to his astonishing work with Pat Metheny.
What we have here with Barbatuques is a full orchestra of Nanás, playing their bodies like crazys, and creating some of the most uplifting and humorous music you can get these days.
The group, based in Sao Paulo, is also a workshop dedicated to the study of human percussion, and was founded in the early 90s by scholar and musician Fernando Barba, hence the name "Barbatuques" ("batuque" can be loosely translated as "percussion").
There is some incredible virtuosism in this record, but that wouldn't stand unless the music can hold your interest. And really, exploring the rhythm landscape of Brazil seems to be a neverending trip.
As neverending as the crop of wonderful musicians this country has to offer. Enjoy!
