About the Artist
It is often said that music has the power to heal.

Pianist/Composer Steven Cravis takes this adage to heart. Steven, whose two CD releases, TRUE REFLECTIONS and THE SOUND OF LIGHT, are currently available on the StevenCravis.com label, has more than a passing interest in the power of healing.Steven's music, performed on acoustic grand piano, is a unique blend of styles, combining the meditative quality of new age, the improvisatory freedom of jazz, and the compositional elegance of the Classics. At its core, Steven's music is inspired by the composer's personal spiritual awareness. There are many twists and turns along any artist's path to success. The journey undertaken by Steven Cravis(also widely known as the Amazing Piano Magician) is no exception. Upon completing his studies at the prestigious Berkley College of Music in 1990, Steven moved into an artists community in nearby Cambridge, Massachusetts. While crafting the meditative piano pieces that later became the foundation of his first CD TRUE REFLECTIONS, Steven supported himself by teaching the healing art of yoga. Steven recalls:"For many musicians, a day job is just a job, a way to pay the bills.

For me, it was different. The spiritual nature of my occupation was a source of inspiration for me. With my music, my goal is to transport my audience to that blissful, relaxed state that I have come to know through the art of yoga and meditation."In 1992, TRUE REFLECTIONS was released. Steven received the audience reaction that he had hoped for. "I think the music struck a chord, helped people to gain a peaceful break from the monotony in their lives. Things really started to go well for me when radio stations WGBH and WMJX began playing my music."To promote his new release, Steven played several well received concerts, including a benefit performance for The Muscular Dystrophy Association at Boston's historic Faneuil Hall. Steven found the healing effect of his music to be equally effective in a live setting.

Given the cinematic quality of his music, it is not surprising that Steven is frequently asked to do film work. In the summer of 1994, Steven contributed the poignant ballad, "Is It True", to the Indian feature film, BOLLYWOOD, from Soni-Khan Productions. The film was singled out for recognition on the film festival circuit in both New York and Los Angeles. In the winter of 1995, Steven released his latest work, THE SOUND OF LIGHT. The intriguing title reflects Steven's continuing interest in spiritual exploration. "In certain cultures, it is said that by chanting specific sounds, one gains access to the dreamworld as sound is translated into light."Musically speaking, THE SOUND OF LIGHT is another success, a further refinement of Steven's unique style. Since its release, Steven has continued to perform, attempting to bring the healing power of his music to others around the world willing to share his journey.By K. Hauptman/April, 1999

CD REVIEW by Kathy Parsons/Solo Piano Publications Steven Cravis' debut CD is very appropriately titled "True Reflections". A beautiful series of reflective and introspective piano solos, these pieces are both intensely personal and easily accessible. Cravis attended The Berklee School of Music and has supported himself as a Yoga instructor. His understanding of music and the human spirit are a wonderful union, and he has stated that his goal with his music is to take people to the relaxing state he has come to know through yoga and meditation.

Some of the music on "True Reflections" is darker and perhaps deeper than several of the pieces on Cravis' later "The Sound of Light". "True Reflections" seems more improvised and less structured, and I really enjoy the freedom of pieces like "Earth Journey", a longer piece (almost seven minutes) that meanders where it will at a peacefully lazy pace. The title track is a wonderful, moody piece, full of questions as well as poignant memories. This piece also sounds mostly impro

Specifically, Cravis's music is minimalistic with a touch of impressionism. There is little dissonance in the melodies that flow simply, easily, beautifully. True Reflections is Cravis's first album, and it contains a lot of his more "serious" works. Nevertheless, it makes for great entertainment whether you're intent on listening closely or just need some peaceful background music.

5 out of 5 stars I love all the members of DMB, individually and together........2006-06-25

I am saddened to see that several reviewers chose to pick and choose who's better within the group. This album is awesome righteous and I think Boyd rocks! It's creative & different. You can't compare Boyd's album to Dave's album, b/c they're completely different. That's the whole point! Geez! Anyways, kudos to Boyd on a kicka** album. I've been a fan of DMB for almost 11 years now and I finally saw them just a few days ago in Raleigh. I'm 28 years old and I was like a teenage schoolgirl screamin' my head off and seriously jammin' out. Anyway - bottom line - all of the fellas rock and Boyd's album (as well as Dave's) is just another display of how much they are individuals with their own ideas and when they put them together it's something explosive as well. Rock on, Boyd!

5 out of 5 stars I love falling in love...........2006-03-13

and falling in love is what I did with this TRUE REFLECTIONS CD ! It was amazing....and the word amazing does not even do this CD justice. I put it on the CD player and mark REPEAT and just listen and listen and then listen some more. Boyd has one of the most sensual voices that just reaches out and envelopes you and takes you away to another place and time. Who ever thinks his voice is not beautiful must be tone deaf....full stop. If you want Dave, listen to Dave for cryin' out loud ! I love Dave, but thank God this is something and someone different with his own unique sound and style. Some of the reviews I've read here are just so unfair. His talent should not be cut down or minimized or even compared to anyone else's. It's his, his alone and it rocks ! He is a great asset to the DMB, but on his own he's nothing short of brilliant, electrifying, mesmerizing and intoxicating and I plan on falling in love each and every time I listen to this CD, which I'm sure will be daily.

    3 out of 5 stars Interesting Blend.......2006-02-26

After reading some of the previous reviews, I get the feeling that some Tinsley fans are harboring a certain degree of anger toward Boyd for not providing the Papa Creech style violin album they were (understandably) expecting. This might be coloring some of the negative takes on this set. Having actually bought this CD BEFORE I knew who Tinsley was in relation to Dave Matthews (I had only heard DMB on the radio at that point)I might have a different perspective. Tinsley is not the greatest vocalist in the world, but he ain't bad. His song writing is pretty much OK, no better or worse. But where this album does shine, and has continued to grow on me with repeated listenings, is in the sound of the backing tracks. Tinsley has generated an very interesting blend of alternative/bluegrassy stylings in his overall sound, which pair strangely well with his mildly soulful vocals. More "interesting" than "good". But my strange addiction to this CD makes me give it a three-star.

    5 out of 5 stars Suprisingly Good.......2005-01-26

If you forget the fact that he's a member of one of the biggest rock band's in america and just look at this disc as it's own being then I find it actually quite enjoyable. Not every song here is a winner but it's a good country flavored mellow rock album. Thumbs up for boyd.

1 out of 5 stars Stick to playing the fiddle Boyd........2004-09-14

Boyd you are one heck of a fiddler and are a great component to DMB. However, your voice is worse than William Hung's.

Instead of covering Cinnamon Girl you should have tried your hand at "She Bangs" or Rocket Man.
