Listening through these two discs, one thought kept leaping up to mind: will ever there be another soprano as versatile and accomplished as Lucia Popp? Died in 1994 at the early age of 54, the operatic world hadn't really mourned her enough.
People are still lingering on Maria Callas, the 'star' soprano with all her glamour and legendary life could offer.
Real listeners, however, could not give up the memory of Lucia Popp's terrific artistry and almost supernatural voice.
Her Rusalka, her Solveig, her Susanna, Zerlina, Despina in the da Ponte/Mozart trio, her terrific Queen of the Night (unsurpassed by ANY subsequent sopranos up till now), and ALSO her Pamina in the same opera. In any language you ask her to sing, and she excelled. I marvel at the Letter Scene in Eugene Onegin - only if Lucia had the chance to perform the whole opera during her short life! The joy, the expectation, the emotional tribulations, so vividly captured in girlish and pure timbre. No one will ever beat her; not even Fleming and Netrebko.
"Weird and wonderful" - that's what Elisabeth Schwarzkopf said of Lucia Popp's singing. We today would modify it to 'wonderful and unsurpassable'.
This 2-CD set is an absolute must have, even if you have never heard of Lucia Popp before.

This is a wonderful album showcasing the very best of Lucia Popp (as the title suggests). Her voice was absolutely beautiful. She could sing the slavic languages like no one else. Her version of Dvorak's Song to the Moon is unbeatable. I dare anyone to find a better performance! Also, the song from Die Zauberflute -Ah Ich fuls (sp?) is outstanding. I've yet to hear a better version. Her diction was fantastic and while she wasn't the highest soprano around - she knew what worked for her voice. This is album is a keeper!

Lucia Popp is one of the best sopranos to ever grace the operatic/classical voice stage. This CD compilation shows her progression through lyric Handel to lyric and dramatic Mozart (her Der Holle Rache from Magic Flute is unrivaled) to tender art song and operetta literature. The first disc also showcases her adeptness with 20th Century literature as well as the ability to step out of the traditional four languages of opera. Any avid music fan MUST have this CD compilation.

    Someone visiting Florence today can only imagine the exciting, flourishing city of the 14th century, but the music on this award-winning disc will help. Francesco Landini, the "blind man of the organ," was the most famous of the Florentine composers during this period. Although he was a chaplain and organist, only Landini's secular music survives. The same goes for the other composers represented on this very fine program of instrumental pieces and songs. The songs are mostly about love--what else?--and the performances are very characterful, such that we can almost guess the text's meaning without understanding the Italian. The instrumental playing is exciting and often virtuosic, and uses a quite large array of period instruments--harp, flutes, shawm, vielle, rebec, lute, portativ organ, and a variety of percussion. -- David Vernier

    Magnificent recording ! Micrologus, after Thomas Binkley 20 years ago, shows us how this music is rich and prolific. Micrologus performs here well known pieces, but in a totally different way than usually. Rhythms and orchestrations are really inspired...

    Yes, it is true that this collection appears to be mostly amateur and in house theatrical recordings of Price, Sutherland, Callas, and Caballe. But for someone interested in great singing, it is a wonderful opportunity to hear these fabulous singers at the height of their powers against the backdrop and the frisson of the live performance. You'll hear them doing things here that you wouldn't in the tamer setting of the recording studio. It's mostly Italian repertory, with the exception of a little Mozart, Handel, and Wagner. The inclusion of Price is puzzling, since the set doesn't cast her in favorable light when compared to the other three great divas represented here. Marilyn Horne would have been a better third choice of someone from roughly the same generation. Give me singing like this, rather than the boring, lifeless (but superior fidelity) version that passes for "high art" today.

    I purchased this recording with great enthusiasm. The price was unbelievable, I mean for three CDs the price seemed too good to be true! And I suppose, it is too good to be true. The CD opens with one of the great arias of all time, but instead of hearing the aria, i was distracted by all sorts of coughing sounds, etc. In my opinion, this CD is unlistenable.

      5 out of 5 stars Karajan's best Figaro, in best sound.......2006-10-29

      Thanks to reissues and copies, there are about five different performances of Figaro from Karajan. His late one in stereo on Decca was straight-faced and impersonal, but almost the same cast appears on a livelier staged broadcast. Here we have a big overlap from Salzburg, but the cast and the mood are even better. Van Dam sings Figaro beautifully, even though he's not funny, and Freni is treasurable as Susanna, far outclassing her studio reading under Colin Davis on Philips. Von Stade is perfect as Cherubino, and the rest of the cast keeps up, even Elizabeth Harwood as the Countess--she was an English soprano that Karajan favored but whose career never got very far.

      Karajan's speeds are quite brisk, from the racing overture onwards. It takes great singers just to follow his beat, and they do a veyr good job. The sonics are good radio stereo, more focused and brighter than in earlier releases. but don't expect miracles, and do expect that the voices will fade as the singers wander away form the mikcrophones. To me, these tchnical deficiencies hardly matter in light of the sparkling, fizzy performance.
