He is the voice of a generation in southern African, a freedom fighter with a microphone and a mbira who sang a revolution into existence in Zimbabwe in the '70s and '80s, and then found international fame with the Shona music of his homeland mixed in with other pan-African rhythms and some reggae. He was in fact as much of a cultural icon in his homeland as Bob Marley was in the Caribbean, and he has had a recording output as spotty and unpredictable as he sought to balance international stardom with his original concept of roots music. Hondo is a grand example of how good he could be, a blend of almost cosmic energy--a heavy bottom end of bass and percussion, shimmering multiple guitar lines, and impassioned choruses, all centered around the sacred music of the mbira. The slow but incessant rhythm of chimurenga with its danceable, political message shines here, and if you turn it up loud and listen to it with your body as well as your ears, you can see why the man has become legend. --Louis Gibson --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

Product Description
The Story Corn-Bred was formed in 1999 by Howdy Edwards and Jerome Lazore. They recruited John "JB" Buck to play bass guitar, Rick Edwards to play harmonica, and Lenny Printup to play drums practicing on a regular basis in Jerome's basement for a good year before their first gig at Molly's place on Grand Ave in the city of Syracuse, New York. Word got out ... and many gigs followed. Howdy and Rick eventually left the band and were replaced by Larry Sullivan on guitar and Wayne Cook on harmonica. Shortly after that Wayne and Larry were replaced by two seasoned musicians: Curtis Waterman on harmonica, and Morris Tarbell on guitar. Jerome, Lenny, Curtis, and JB are from the Onondaga Nation, and Morris is Mohawk making Corn-Bred Central New York's only all Native American band. Sweet Curtis Brown brings his own fan base from the Westcott Jug Suckers, the Jane Zell Band, the Miss E Band, and the Gonstermachers. Morris brings along his fan base from Morris and the Hepcats, Built for Comfort, and Tom Townsley and the Backsliders. The band s fan base is now beyond the Central New York area. The current line up has a groove together as a band. Their popularity and fan base has grown and lead to some great gigs. Corn-Bred has played all of New York's casinos, the President's Inaugural Ball in '05, the National Museum of the American Indian first anniversary celebration, the 100th anniversary of Harley Davidson, the 100th anniversary of Ironworkers Local 60, the New York State Blues Festival, the Taste of Syracuse, the Syracuse Sammy's, local bars, as well as private parties. Corn-Bred's sound is toe-tapping danceable. The band Jerome Lazore - Rhythm Guitar and lead vocals. As a teenager, Jerome enjoyed playing guitar. After not playing for nearly 30 years, his family encouraged him to revisit his favorite hobby once he retired from iron-work. He formed Corn-Bred in 1999. Curtis Waterman - Harmonica and vocals. A Syracuse area music award winner, Curtis is a self-taugCustomer Reviews:

A native of Seattle, Washington, John began learning piano at age five. For eight years he studied classical music, with an emphasis on Bach. Influences around the house included his father s Dixieland band, Erroll Garner, Dave Brubeck, and the British comedy/music troupe Beyond the Fringe. Then, following the '60's British invasion and the explosion of Northwest rock'n'roll bands, he turned his musical talents toward pop music and songwriting (like, who didn't?). While playing in bands and writing songs through high school and college, he studied the techniques of the famous songwriters - Cole Porter, the Gershwins, Harold Arlen etc. - along with those of the Beatles, the Kinks, and Donovan. In 1975 he fell in with the actors and directors of Seattle's Empty Space Theatre, and began writing songs and incidental music for all sorts of plays, including collaborating with other Space cadets on several original scripts. It was there that he learned to love writing songs to express the feelings and portray the interactions of specific characters in specific narrative situations, with the added challenge of keeping the music tuneful and memorable. He also loves working with unexpected time signatures and ethnic influences, putting particular emphasis on the rhythmic aspect of lyrics. Having now written songs for dozens of musical comedies, dramas, and cabaret revues, he spends his time exploring both esoteric, layered theatrical notions (e.g. the story of the Tulipomania of 1635 in Holland, as told in a Spanish tavern) and the art of the simple, stand-alone pop tune. Let's face it: some things are just better sung than expressed any other way.
