5 out of 5 stars Outstanding tribute to a treasured artist .......2007-06-15

Just received this CD and am stunned at how wonderful it is. This is definitely the best collection of performances by people/groups I've never heard of, packed with one performance after another that provides new insights into Richard Thompson's compositions and his and his wife, Linda's, performances. Most tributes make you want to go back to the original artist - this one stands on its own. A must for Thompson fans, and a great introduction to a gifted artist for anyone else.

5 out of 5 stars Gawd, I love this album!.......2005-11-16

Tragedy struck my household in the late 90's when I opened the case to this CD and found it missing. After a frenzied search behind the bookcase, under the sofa, inside the CD changer, in the clothes dryer (well, it takes all those socks!), I scurried online and found to my horror that the CD was out of print!!! Thankfully, there were used copies available - praise the Lord for Amazon!

The best tribute albums are usually for writers who don't perform well. Richard Thompson is a decent singer and an excellent guitarist, yet he had two successful tribute albums in the mid-90's. Beat the Retreat, while a fine introduction to Thompson's career, is more predictable. (Don't you know how Bonnie Raitt is going to do "When the Spell Is Broken" before you hear it?) The artists here are less mainstream, less popular (at least in America - some of them may be big in England but most of them I had never heard of), and they give interpretations of the songs, not just covers. So you get to hear some of the great songs of folk-rock, but done in unexpected ways.

The sound of the album is dark and subdued, almost murky. Normally that would be a criticism, but it fits in well with Thompson's gloomy worldview. I hate to bore you with a song-by-song critique, but I think the album merits it:

"The Knife Edge" is a mundane orchestral arrangement that is a poor introduction to what's to come. But it's only a minute long.

"Pharaoh" - Great idea to back this with a tremolous accordion and throw in a bombarde (whatever that is, it sounds like an Arabian shawm - you know, snake charmer music.)

"How Will I Ever Be Simple Again" - Christine Collister nails the haunting melody, set against a bass drum and reverb that suggests a battlefield after war, with a plaintive harmonica.

"It Don't Cost Much" - Not my favorite Thompson, but Etzioni (who co-wrote it) has a nice gravelly voice which works well against exotic instrumentation (mandolin, harmonium, hurdy-gurdy)

"Down Where the Drunkards Roll" - This song is a bit mawkish, but the gossamer guitar-line sets it off well.

"Wheely Down" - I don't usually like spoken word vocals, but Ivor Cutler's gentle brogue complements some of Thompson's best poetry to create its own melodic structure.

"Reckless Kind" - not a big fan of Victoria Williams' voice, but this song is a good choice for her, undercutting her usual coyness.

"The End of the Rainbow" - Thompson at his darkest, almost literally grabbing the candy from the baby's crib. But how can you not love a song that begins, "I feel for you you little horror"?

"I Want to See the Bright Lights Tonight" - One of many revelations, a re-interpretation that adds new meaning to the lyric. I always thought the Thompsons' "silver band" version was corny. Here Ron Kavana's husky, world-weary spokesong gives it a whole new dimension.

"Love Is Bad For Business" - one of the rockiner songs on this quiet CD, equivalent to Bob Mould's "Turning of the Tide" on Beat the Retreat.

"Dimming of the Day" - of the many versions of this, one of the world's most beautiful love songs, this may be the best. Nothing against Bonnie Raitt, but her version is earthbound. This one soars.

"Waltzing's For Dreamers" - More schmaltz, but well done schmaltz, you can really feel the pub atmosphere.

"The World is a Wonderful Place" - uncredited and previously unreleased cut with the inimitable Linda T. on vocals. If you don't get Richard's sense of humor, you probably think this is the most unrelentingly depressing song in history. If you do get his sense of humor, you realize that it is the most unrelentingly depressing song in history - but it's also a lot of fun, in a bizarre way. For a head trip, listen to this next to Louis Armstong doing "What a Wonderful World."

"Night Comes In" - The highlight of the album for me. I always thought the song was about a drunk guy. Now I realize it's about Sufi dancing. When I heard the line "I may find that street tomorrow" I always thought it was referring to a drunkard's delusion; now I see it's talking about hope and salvation. It starts with a hammer dulcimer, then the guitar duels with a danh tranh (Southeast Asian mandolin) and finally cranks into an idiosyncratic electric guitar rave-up as the frenzy builds to a dervish-like pitch. If anybody knows where I can get anything else by Full Moon Fair, let me know. If you don't hear this song pouring down like silver, get a hearing check.

"Sisters" - one of the few I don't like. The vocals just don't work. Jeez, what fun it must be to sit around THAT Thanksgiving table.

"For Shame of Doing Wrong" - I prefer the Evan Dando/Syd Straw version on Retreat, but this acoustic take has its own integrity.

"I Misunderstood" - One of the highlights of Rumour and Sigh, which had just recently been released when this came out, is given a nicely understated performance by Sally Barker.

"Galway to Graceland" - A capella 4-part harmony that sounds like it was recorded in a church. Dig the minor modulation on the last note. What a perfect way to end an almost-perfect CD. And what a terrific tribute to a transcendent career! Richard Thompson is an international treasure.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Thompson Tribute Album.......2005-11-07

This grab-bag of brilliant performances of Rd Thompson's songs is far better than "Beat The Retreat." A few oddball conceptions are hard to get used to, bu the majority are dead-on. I've listened to it hundreds of times, and it doesn't get old. Stand-outs (for me) are the beautifully orchestrated "Knife Edge," "How Will I Ever Be Simple Again," "The End of the Rainbow," the "untitled track #13" that's really the simply knock-out Rd & Linda Thompson performance of "The World Is a Wonderful Place," and "Sisters." But it's all good-- for Thompson fans or fans of folk music in general, this is a must-have.

4 out of 5 stars A Few Incredible Jems - 3 1/2 stars .......2004-12-21

I mostly agree with the previous reviewer. This is a low key (understated) tribute to Thompson; covers by more homely types perhaps, but I prefer it to Beat The Retreat. These versions grow better with repeated listenings, and while it has a few duds (Restless Kind!), it has alot of solid performance and a few really wonderful ones. I like the double time version of Pharoah and especially Full Moon Fair's (Henry Kaiser's group) sublime rendition of Night Comes In, this alone makes the CD a must for RT fans.

3 out of 5 stars 3 1/2 Stars.......2003-03-16

What with its chamber-orchestra version of "The Knife Edge" and Ron Kavana's talking-blues rendition of "I Want to See the Bright Lights Tonight," this Richard Thompson tribute album is certainly quirkier than its direct competition (Beat the Retreat, released on Capitol in 1994). It will appeal more to purists, partly because Bonnie Raitt and David Byrne are nowhere to be found and partly because Martin & Jessica Simpson do a far better job of "Down Where the Drunkards Roll" than Los Lobos ever could. The House Band makes "Pharaoh" their own, and Plainsong delivers a stunning a cappella version of the simultaneously heartbreaking and hilarious "Galway to Graceland". The album's title song is a hidden track (number 13) that features a previously-unreleased Richard & Linda Thompson performance. Ultimately, though, Beat the Retreat wins, because it has two performances each by June Tabor and Maddy Prior. It also has X doing "Shoot out the Lights," a song that could have been written as easily for John Doe and Exene Cervenka as it was for the Thompsons. Do yourself a favor and get both albums. -- Rick Anderson, All Music Guide
________________________________________________________________________________________________

Among the merchants of grim (which is only one facet of his much broader art), Richard Thompson exhibits a rare sense of humor and sanity that, combined with his brutal emotional honesty, makes him a paradigm of underground sensibilities ý in a career that is nothing of the sort. Basically, he's a troubadour who accepts sadness as a fellow traveler in open-minded enthusiasms that have deposited him comfortably in realms as diverse as "Matty Groves" and Pere Ubu. His songs have proven equally useful to folkies like Jo-El Sonnier, June Tabor and sometimes sideman Clive Gregson, as well as those of a more restless, rebellious nature, most notably Bob Mould, Elvis Costello and Maria McKee. (For his part, Thompson playfully does Who songs in concert.) The two tribute albums reflect that duality: 'The World Is a Wonderful Place' favors homey types like Victoria Williams, Christine Collister, Peter Blegvad and Marvin Etzioni; 'Beat the Retreat' holds the center with Bonnie Raitt, Los Lobos, Beausoleil, and June Tabor, but also opens the doors to Bob Mould, R.E.M., X, and Dinosaur Jr. -- Ira Robbins, Trouser Press

Rolling Stone (3/9/95, p.64) - 3 Stars - Good - "...Over a nearly 30-year career...Richard Thompson has established himself as a guitar virtuoso and extraordinary songwriter. BEAT THE RETREAT contains some energized renditions of his material..."

Q (11/94, p.126) - 4 Stars - Excellent - "...The range of performers involved here underlines the reach of Thompson's art....BEAT THE RETREAT achieves a continuity of mood that places it above most `tribute' albums..."

Dirty Linen (12/94-1/95, p.62) - "...BEAT THE RETREAT shows just how much a great song can ignite the creative spark within even the most mainstream artists..."

Option (3-4/95, p.93) - "...does justice to a darkly masterful songwriter and guitarist..."

4 out of 5 stars For Shame of Sequencing Wrong.......2005-07-14

It's a definite tribute to a songwriter when the strength of their writing shines through, and is even complimented by a diversity of interpretive styles. This album rates high, but in my estimation it is saddled with deeply flawed track sequencing. Hence, 4 stars. I brought a copy home from the library initially and noted the high points. Here was the proverbial embarrassment of riches, yet something felt amiss. When I got my own copy I put it in the PC and reordered the tracks until it gelled.
I humbly submit the following resequencing as more palatable: Turning of the Tide / For Shame of Doing Wrong / Shoot Out the Lights / Valerie / When the Spell is Broken / Beat the Retreat / Down Where the Drunkards Roll / Wall of Death / Just the Motion / Genesis Hall / A Heart Needs a Home / The Madness of Love / Dimming of the Day / The Great Valerio.
Omitted were 2 tracks: I felt that Sandy Denny owns Farewell, Farewell; plus, Dinosaur Jr. seemed a little out of place here with I Misunderstood. While regarding REM highly, Wall of Death sounds phoned-in compared to the R&L Thompson original, rating just okay. Being partial to Los Lobos, I feel that the apparently understated arrangement of Down Where the Drunkards Roll is actually rich in sonic detail and ultimately transcendant. The remainder of this album is very fine and deserving of a listen by not only Thompson devotees.

    4 out of 5 stars A Fitting - and Excellent - Tribute.......2004-06-22

This gets my vote as my favorite tribute album of all time, and in my opinion it's one of the best ever put together. Richard Thompson, a founding member of Fairport Convention who has had a devoted cult following both here in the States and in his native Britain, is a formidable songwriter, not to mention one of the best folk and rock guitarists alive. He is one of those musical talents who has unjustifiably been denied large-scale commercial success. But he probably would consider the admiration of his peers more important than that anyway, and it's shown in abundance on this collection. Contrary to the track record of most tributes, this one hasn't a weak song on it. Packed with talent, it represents a variety of styles, from the crunchy rock of Dinosaur Jr., Bob Mould and X to the quiet folk of Martin Carthy and Maddy Prior (co-founders of another classic Brit folk-rock band, Steeleye Span). Everyone grafts their own style to these songs, and mostly they are quite successful. Graham Parker's "The Madness of Love" is a highlight, as is Bonnie Raitt's "When the Spell Is Broken" (backed by the gospel greats The Five Blind Boys of Alabama, who also do a goosebump-raising version of "Dimming of the Day"). Another Brit-folk great, June Tabor, turns in a fine rendition of the title track, and David Byrne gives a restrained but effective reading of "Just the Motion". National treasure Beausoleil does a "bontemps" version of "Valerie" (which was also a country hit for another artist whose name escapes me). The closest to missteps here are from two of my favorite bands. Los Lobos' "Down Where the Drunkards Roll" is so low-key as to be almost somnambulant; and in R.E.M.'s version of "Wall of Death", Michael Stipe's phrasing seems clumsy to me - I much prefer Nanci Griffith?s cover of that tune. Overall, though, this is an affectionate and well-conceived tribute to an artist who easily deserves it.

2 out of 5 stars Did not turn me into a big fan.......2003-03-15

This kind of compilation CD tends to bring together elements of the music culture that listeners might not otherwise hear together. The duet by Shawn Colvin and Loudon Wainwright III on the song "A Heart Needs a Home" is a collaboration which belongs on an album like this more than anywhere. All the songs on "Beat The Retreat" are by Richard Thompson, so it can be assumed that the performers are his fans. I hardly qualify for that group. I was previously only aware of his song, "Dimming of the Day" from the Bonnie Raitt performance on the "Longing in Their Hearts" CD in 1993. "Beat the Retreat" came out in 1994, with Bonnie Raitt singing "When the Spell is Broken" and The Five Blind Boys of Alabama doing "Dimming Of The Day" in their own style.

My opinion of music was much better in 1994 than it is today. That each of the musicians on this CD could find a song by Richard Thompson and learn it well enough to make it their own for a single performance shows some versatility that is beyond the common opinion of hit makers as people who are totally devoted to doing their own thing. In the case of Los Lobos doing a simple song like "Down Where the Drunkards Roll," it seems like the effort was to lower expectations: this is so much less than I expect from a song by Los Lobos. I don't know much of the work of some of the artists represented. The world might be full of female vocalists like June Tabor, that I don't know, who sounds great, but that I never heard before. When I go to a concert, I'm more likely to hear the guys, and I heard X once as an opening act without wanting much of that music. But this CD is more like real music to me, and even X does a good job.

The great song for me was "Wall of Death" performed by R.E.M. with John Keane playing pedal steel guitar, so it didn't sound exactly like most R.E.M. songs. The first hint is Michael Stipe singing, "Oh no, no, . . . " It is all about a carnival, with a list of attractions, but the others don't measure up:

On the wall of the death, all the world is far from me
On the wall of death, it's the nearest to being free.

You are going nowhere when you ride on the carousel,
I may be strong, but what's the use of ringing a bell?
    Switchback will make you crazy,
    Where is the bearded lady?
Oh, let my take my chances on the wall of death.

    4 out of 5 stars A worthy tribute to a great songwriter / guitarist.......2001-10-09

Back in 1994, when this album was released, we were in the midst of a short-lived vogue for tribute albums. A bunch of celebrity musicians would appear on these albums and offer their covers of a well-known artist's songs. As you might imagine, the results were usually mixed. Generally, though, the better the songs, the better the album turned out to be.

This is certainly true in this case. Richard Thompson is among the very best songwriters around (and a fine guitarist to boot), and this album features some of his best songs. Almost every song here is at least pretty good, with the exception of "A Heart Needs a Home", which is utterly ruined by Shawn Colvin's Whitney-Houstonesque vocal pyrotechnics. That's a shame, since it's a really great song, and a more restrained style would have done it much greater justice.

The good songs include "When the Spell is Broken", featuring some nice slide guitar by Bonnie Raitt; "The Madness of Love", in which Graham Parker sings with a spirit of tense longing typically found in Richard Thompson's music; "Turning of the Tide", in which Bob Mould sounds eerily like Richard Thompson himself; the Five Blind Boys of Alabama's cover of "Dimming of the Day"; June Tabor's version of "Beat the Retreat"; and Dinosaur Jr.'s searing rendition of "I Misunderstood", which is actually much, much better than the original, something almost unheard of in tribute albums. (Incidentally, J. Mascis seemed to appear on every single tribute album ever made, and whatever he performed, it was usually one of the highlights of the album.)

The album closes with what I regard as its best track, Maddy Prior and Martin Carthy's "The Great Valerio", in which Maddy Prior actually outdoes Linda Thompson's singing (unimagineable!), and Martin Carthy completely reworks the song to fit his own style, making the song his own, almost as Jimi Hendrix once made "All Along the Watchtower" his own.

This album didn't get a whole lot of attention when it came out, and it remains pretty unknown and underrated. That's a shame, since it is one of the best examples of its genre, and the artists generally perform Thompson's songs with a lot of feeling for their spirit, but without so much reverence that they become mere slavish imitations.

5 out of 5 stars High Quality Covers and Nirvana Collector's Item.......2005-01-28

The Wipers were a influential punk band that began in Portland, Oregon in 1977. Greg Sage lead the group to recording many "underground" albums that created a small yet humble following with their songs about hardship, pain and frustration. Their music struck a chord that influenced the founding members of Nirvana, Kurt Cobain (who orchestrated the concept of making this tribute album) and Krist Novoselic. Here are a collection of Wipers covers with strong effort put into all of the recordings. Nirvana's recording of "Return of the Rat" is amongst the strongest of the collection. In addtion, "Return of the Rat" is a rare collector's item for Nirvana fans since this recording is in its original state without any editing unlike the version found on the 2004 "With the Lights Out" boxed set. You'll find Honey's take on "No One Wants an Alien" to be a light semi-acoustic masterpiece with a beautifully sung rendition of Sage's lyrics. Poison Idea's cover of "Up Front" takes a rauccus and sonic approach you'll find nothing less than fantastic. If you aren't a fan of the Wipers, you will be after listening to this album. 14 Songs for Greg Sage is a thoroughly enjoyable and fitting tribute.

    5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Perfect.......2004-07-31

I bought this because I heard Nirvana was on it. I also really like the Wipers because bands like The Wipers and Meat Puppets were good influenzes on Nirvana, unlike the crap that Devo and Led Zeppelin did

    5 out of 5 stars Definately 5 Stars.......2001-11-25

This is a bunch of covers of Wipers songs, as you might have guessed. All the covers are really well done, and pay a positive tribute. Nirvana's cover is especially well done. Quality music for any fan of the Wipers.

Every song sounded the same. No change of inflection of voice - or "orchestra" for that matter, no change of beat, and no change of singer. I was very disappointed.

        Album Description

Tired of This Exile is a part of the rich harvest from James Faulkner's musical wanderings along and across the frontiers of Europe and North America. It features songs from his youth in the north of England, Gaelic songs from his lengthy sojourns in the west of Scotland and Ireland, and French-language songs picked up as a graduate student in Quebec.

Tired of this Exile is a truly international effort. Recorded in Switzerland, its appearance in the United States is due to a lucky meeting between James and Bedlam House's Bill Sutton during an Irish seisíun in a pub in Grenoble.

Unabashedly poetic from wistful memory to conditional commentary, Tired of This Exile reflects the unique perspective of an international wanderer. Traditional and modern folk songs are combined with original works in a compilation that changes languages as smoothly as it changes moods.

5 out of 5 stars Not Tired of This Disc.......2005-03-09

I'm generally not a big fan of folk music but this CD is really very good. I bought it on a recommendation of a friend and the first time I listened to it, The Great Train Robbery really struck me as a catchy modern ballad. As I listened more carefully I was drawn to the nuances of the instrumentation on the more traditional music which fuses a wide range of songs with imaginative accompanyment, strong guitar and passionate singing. I'd never hear of this guy before but I hope to hear more soon.

        5 out of 5 stars Inspiring..........2004-05-11

I'm sitting at my desk, facing my computer.
        Listening to your CD.
Feel like a fish, surrounded by these windows.
        Listening to your CD.
Can see the tops of some green leafy trees.
Would even hear the singings of the small birds outside, if there weren't these windows.
        Listening to your CD.
The aquarium is even too big for me, too white, too light, much too urban. Too Parisian.
        Listening to your CD.
I'm not tired of my exile yet.
Want to go on travelling the world, fly away. But fishes commonly have no wings.
And I stay here inside my aquarium. Comfortably fed by their well-meaning hands.
        Listening to your CD.
Get some inspiration but can't write it down right now. Need a better surrounding. We'll see.
So I just stay here, listening to your CD.
        And go back to work.
