5 out of 5 stars Ahh, Florence!!.......2002-10-14

Italian culture during the period from the 14th to the 16th centuries was a whirlwind of developing literature and art, and during this period of history Florence was a political and cultural center to rival Milan or Verona.
I love medieval and renaissance music. They are the "roots" of the great classics centuries later. One does not cultivate a complete education of art by studying only such Masters as Van Gogh, Renoir, Picasso, Dali etc. So it is with fine music.
These CD's contain examples of Florentine musical composition from the 1300's and 1500's. The first CD, performed by David Munrow and the Early Music Consort, covers compositions from the 1300's, with many of the works of Francesco Landini, the most prolific Florentine composer of this period. The second covers music from the 1500's and is performed by John Beckett and the Musica Reservata. Here we can see the early development of both symphonic structure and opera.
Both discs are wonderful examples of different periods in the history of musical development, and performed by different conductors and artists. Therefore a comparison between the two is unfair and misplaced. David Munrow and the Early Music Consort are superb, as I have always found them to be, and John Beckett and the Musica Reservata are equally enjoyable.
If you appreciate early music you will find this recording to be a fantastic addition to your collection, and perhaps the definitive collection of early Italian music. If you are unfamiliar with early music or with Italian Renaissance music then these CD's would be a wonderful introduction.

5 out of 5 stars Best Italian Renaissance disc available........2002-06-28

This re-issue of recordings from the early 70's by the Early Music Consort Of London is,in my opinion, the best recordings of Italian Renaissance works. It is the favorite of my eary music discs, and includes music treasures from 14th and 16th century Florence. Great listening on both discs, and worth the money!

4 out of 5 stars Munrow is magnificent.......2001-11-20

The first disc in this collection is delightful. David Munrow's recorder is a genuine treat. The vocal parts blend well and create a festive atmosphere. The Early Music Consort of London offer a splendid performance. By contrast, the second disc, which features Musica Reservata, is a bit disappointing. Two of the solo voices on disc two are harsh, detracting from an otherwise pleasant recording. They may fairly represent the performing style of sixteenth century Florence, but that is small consolation for the twentieth century ear. Nonetheless, the virtues of the first disc are sufficient to warrant purchasing this collection. Munrow is magnificent.

This is the most beautifully sung Il Trovatore on record, but is by no means the most dramatic and is far from the best-conducted. Those who insist on stereo sound (which has substantial advantages for opera recordings in terms of dramatic presence and impact) may opt for the Zubin Mehta or James Levine treatments. But Jussi Bjoerling and Leonard Warren respond intensely to the score theatrically and, above all, musically, Zinka Milanov sings with a haunting beauty most of the time, Fedora Barbieri approaches the role of the Gypsy woman Azucena as if she were born to sing it, and the relatively small, well-disciplined chorus sings with a clarity and precision comparable to that of Levine's powerful Metropolitan Opera Chorus. --Joe McLellan

5 out of 5 stars Still the Best.......2005-03-25

Despite shortcomings, such as mediocre conducting, cuts and the "old" sound, not least the miscast tenor, this "Trovatore" remains unsurpassed for the beauty of singing. Milanov is simply the best Leonora ever, both in her grand arias and the dramatic coloratura segments. Bjoerling is not heroic enough for my taste. He is perfect for "Ballo," "Faust" and "Manon," but not for "Aida" or "Il Trovatore." But he makes up for the lack of heroic stature with the beauty of voice and singing. If only Milanov could sing this opera with Corelli, what a glorious "Trovatore" that would be!

3 out of 5 stars The best for many years, but now surpassed.......2003-11-04

Most of the reviewers below have covered the majority of good and bad points about this recording, so I will be brief. Beautiful and mostly accurate singing but lacking dramatic credibility from the soprano and tenor; decent conducting but a terrible, thin-sounding orchestra; no sense of "sound-staging," very little drama except from Barbieri and Warren, and a very incomplete version of the score with numerous large and small cuts.

Of competing versions, pride of place goes to the new Ghiorghiu-Alagna set, even though Alagna pushes the voice a little too hard at times and holds the high C in "Di quella pira" well beyond its written length. The 1970 Mehta set has a good Leonora in Price and a decent Manico in Domingo, but Milnes' baritone lacks the proper bite for Di Luna and Cossotto is a joke as Azucena once one has heard Barbieri or Diadkova.

So, basically, we are still waiting for a really great "Trovatore." If you like Milanov and Bjorling, get this set. If you want a good balance between singing, drama and completeness, get the Pappano-Alagna set.

3 out of 5 stars A Classic Trovatore --- but by far not the best!.......2003-01-23

This 1952 set has been acclaimed since its debut, and while it does feature some of the most passionate Italian singing on disc, it is poorly conducted and hopelessly boring. Bjoerling is second-rate (at best), and Cellini never quite captures the dramatic urgency of this gripping work. But the RCA Victor orchestra plays well in spite of it all, and the chorus work is most impressive.

Still, this recording is a must-own for its two leading women, Zinka Milanov and Fedora Barbieri, the latter being indisputably the best Azucena on disc. Zinka Milanov is ideal as Leonora, better than even Antonietta Stella on Serafin's recording; though she doesn't deliver as much intensity as Callas in Herbert von Karajan's inspired performance (who would?), she sings with soaring beauty and smart, focused characterization. The highlight, though, is the exquisite Azucena of Fedora Barbieri, one of the most underrated singers of the 20th century. She is glorious and exciting, bringing some much-needed thrill to this otherwise lackluster performance. She can also be found the aforementioned von Karajan set -- but believe it or not, she's better here.

Here's a summary of great Trovatore recordings: One of the best efforts, in certainly the best sound, is Mehta's 1970 recording with Domingo and Price as the leading roles. It's fantastic, with an all-star cast and superb orchestral work. I've mentioned von Karajan's more than once on this review, and his recording with Callas, di Stefano and Barbieri is a supreme addition to the catalogue. Callas fans should snatch it up without a moment's pause. But don't get it if you want sheer vocal perfection from the leading roles. I guess my No. 1 Recommendation is actually Tullio Serafin's version with Bergonzi as my favorite Manrico of all time. Other cast highlights include Antonietta Stella as a wonderful Leonora and Fiorenza Cossotto as a frightening Azucena. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars A REMINDER OF THE WAY OPERA USED TO SOUND!.......2002-08-18

I'm going to make this very short and to-the-point. They simply don't sing like this anymore ----- sopranos and tenors
like Milanov and Bjoerling are an extinct breed, and we are the poorer for it. Ditto for Fedora Barbieri and Leonard Warren ------- two more outstanding singers ---- all of whom could be heard regularly at the Metropolitan Opera in the 1950's. But then again, so were many other great singers. We don't have voices like this today --- and one hearing of this recording of "Trovatore" sadly proves it. Recorded in 1952, it still sounds acceptable --- and no subsequent "Trovatore" has matched it, though the famous 1962 broadcast from Salzburg with Leontyne Price, Franco Corelli, Giulietta Simionato, and Ettore Bastianini, all under the baton of Herbert von Karajan, comes the closest.

3 out of 5 stars Down with the director!!.......2002-06-11

I think this is a nice version from Trovatore, but musicaly, It lacks of intensity and drama coming from Cilario and Bjoreling. I must admit that Milanov, Merril and Barbieri are superb in each of their roles, but I didn't like that much Bjorleing's singing in this opera. With so little power in his "di quella pira". Good but not great!
As for the director I don't understand how they let him direct an orchestra!! he is Owghfull, no strenght. Maybe I'm overreacting with Cillario, but I heard so much better performances of the orchestra than this, an when I come back and listen to this one I get every day more disapointed.
Is a good choice if you think in the singers, but a terrible one if you think in the director.
Listen to Correlli's, Pryce version.

Here is a live performance from Moscow, with the La Scala forces, taped in 1964. Gabriella Tucci, a fine singer who was only lacking the individual timbre needed for stardom, is an excellent Leonora, and Carlo Bergonzi is among the most elegant and stirring Manricos on disc. Giulietta Simionato, nearing the end of her career, sings with great passion as the crazy Azucena, and Piero Cappuccilli delivers a big Count de Luna. Gianandrea Gavazzeni, an old hand obviously trying to impress those cold-war Russkies, pulls out all the stops, along with his cast. This one is near the top of the list. --Robert Levine

5 out of 5 stars Tuccissima! A Recognition of a Great Interpretation!.......2005-03-02

La Mia Tuccissima! Gabriella Tucci IS Leonora. Only with her do I feel the hectic torture that this woman endures, the pain of not knowing, the agony of love gone astray, the confusion of complex feelings and the joy of the brief happy yet fleeting moments. Tucci portrays the kind of mercurial agony that all the characters, except perhaps Azucena whose suffering is life long, experience. She accomplishes this through superb vocalism (that is very much on a par with any Verdi soprano) and emotional insight. Never is she too intense, haughty, or too flighty. There is perfect balance and in this way she surpasses other interpretations. For example, the closing phrase of "D'amor sull'ali rosee" the final cadenza is on the word "le pene" (pain)which Verdi wrote in an awkward shifting up and down motion descending, which suggests a kind of mental collapse. Tucci gives it an amazing speed and tortured quality which causes the audience to gasp. Other sopranos slow it down and apply portamenti and so on....lovely?....perhaps yes!....dramatically effective....not really! Tucci understands that Leonora is slightly touched......a little crazy.

As for her voice, it is very distinctive. It seems to possess extreme qualities simultaneously ice cold/hot metal .....hard to explain. Her style is excellent and her heart is warm!

This is a great Trovatore overall! I have heard many live recordings and few sopranos drive audiences to the point of frenzy that Tucci does! Thats all that matters in the end!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2004-12-05

Firstly, for a live recording, I have to say the sound it top notch! This is really a wonderful recording, and it does reflect the practices of the times (the Cabaletta after the famous Miseria for Leonora is cut, which was a common practice at the time, yet, a stupid one to me, for if the soprano can sing the coloratura's of the first act, she would have no worries in this aria, for it is far easier). What I find sad is that these great singers recorded so little together. Each recorded some on their own, and with other singers, but they work so well together. Tucci sings a wonderful Leonora, and she actually has a very beautiful trill. Some say her voice just wasn't individual enough to make her a star. I find her voice very individual, and I find I have no trouble instantly identifying her when I hear her sing, however, she does remind one of Stella a great deal. Bergonzi has always been a favorite Manrico, but not the only tenor I enjoy in the part (I love Corelli, Domingo, Di Stephano, del Monaco, and each for very unique reasons). He brings a very lyric quality to the role, one of a young lover, even if in the super dramatic moments there are others who really do a more compelling job. Cappuccilli is his "not-at-all-subltle" self (I don't think he ever sang a role without reminding you of a bull in a china shop, but no matter how loud and large he was in voice, it works here beautifully). However he works well with the other principles. Then there is the famous Simionato, and I have to say my most favorite Azucena ever. I wish she recorded the role with the high C that it contains, for she did sing it that way on occasion (but not often, as she really stuck more to performing practices of the day), yet, at this stage in her career, I am sure that note was beyond her. I think this is one of the only times (excepting a newer recording out with Pavarotti containing the Azucena of Verrot, and she is nearly her 70's when she made that recording) we actually hear the singer portraying the role who is close to the age of the role (we make that comment sometimes in regard to sopranos who are at last young enough to match the age of the heroine they are portraying, but we seldom think of it in terms of being old enough to reflect the age of the person they are portraying). Personally, no matter the actual shortcomings of Simionato in this role, I really think being the correct age for the gypsy mother only adds to the reality of the part. We are hearing an old wornout person who deeply reflects the distructive forces of a life filled with hate. Simionato's age works for her making this portayal very real, and very authentic to that sort of a person. It is very true that there are moments one is forced to listen to some real struggling to get out the music, but again, I don't see that as a draw back at all. It only makes her suffering all the more real, the pains of life actually gulping away her ability to speak. This is an electric Trovatore, and sadly, we NEVER see that in the theater today. The singers either have voices far too small for the roles, or are too intent on sounding pretty, and all the drama is lost.

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent Il Trovatore.......2004-11-28

This recording of Il Trovatore is underappreciated. It features an all-star cast with an excellent conductor. Carlo Bergonzi is one of the best Manricos alive. He sings with dramatic intensity, which is relevant in his "Infida!" in Act I. Bergonzi's finest moment in the opera is his High Cs at the end of "Di quella pira." Gabriella Tucci is an under recorded opera star. Her Leonora is one of the best around today. Her vocal beauty is apparent in "Tacea la notte," and "Di tale amor." Piero Cappuccilli is one of my favorite baritones, so his presence on this CD influenced me to purchase it. His powerful baritone voice is perfect for Count di Luna. His "Il balen" is absoutely wonderful. Giulietta Simionato is THE Azucena. Her "Stride la vampa" is great, and her best moment. She sounds just like a crazy gypsy mother seeking revenge on the Count. The supporting singers ae also great. Ivo Vinco is a commanding Ferrando. Piero de Palma is one of my favorite "supporting singers", and is excellent as Ruiz. Conductor Gianandrea Gavazzeni is a superb conductor, and pulls out everything he has to impress the Moscow audience.

4 out of 5 stars Our Amazing Stars in Moscow.......1999-09-11

This recording is set in Moscow as La Scala's opera tour. For the names of the singers you may choice this set without any hesitation. Of couse, all the singers are pretty good. Although Simionato is already old, she sings still exactly. And Tucci is in her pick. She's cool! Cappuccilli is normal. But our Bergonzi is not so good at that time and "Di quella pira"is downed in a half-note. The reaction of Moscow's audience is very passionate. But remastering isn't a little satisfying. But I'd like to tell you, only if you love this opera, to buy this set.

Amazon.com essential recording

Maria Callas's voice was never noted for its sheer beauty, but she was in her best form for this session and she knew exactly what to do with what she had. She might not make the distraught figure of Leonora rationally credible, but she knows more about acting with her voice than anyone this side of Sir John Gielgud. And she puts Leonora's emotions, her vulnerability, her whole-hearted, self-sacrificial love, squarely before the listener. Herbert von Karajan's conducting brings logical coherence to a work not noted for that quality. In short, this is vintage Callas, at the top of her form in some of the greatest music and some of the most intensely emotional situations ever devised for a soprano. Von Karajan--young and not yet burdened with the mannerisms of his later years, is an ideal partner. The other singers, though dwarfed by Callas, provide substantial support. --Joe McLellan

5 out of 5 stars A Leonora For All Time.......2006-04-08

I have always considered the Trovatore Leonora to be one of Callas's very greatest roles. Here , less obscured by her undoubted dramatic gifts, we can enjoy the pure musicality of her singing. The timbre is perfect for Leonora - dark, plangent & (apart form at the very top of her register)surpassingly beautiful. The role displays her perfect legato, incredible breath control & accurate coloratura. She also has a wonderful understanding of just how to phrase a Verdian cadenza, quite different from anything she would do in Bellini or Donizetti. You only have to hear her first few phrases to know that this Leonora is an aristocrat. Leontyne Price is undoubtedly another great Leonora, and she too has a voice perfectly suited to the role, but occasionally she mars the vocal line with unmusical cadenzas, appearing more interested in laying out her voice for admiring display, where Callas is more intent on letting us hear Verdi. The rest of the cast is just about as perfect as was possible at the time & a good deal better than anything we could manage today. True, Di Stefano lacks the requisite weight, but he sings with such face, it is readily forgiven. His "Di quella pira" may not have the heroic heft of a Corelli, but he sings "Ah, si ben mio" quite beautifully. Panerai, Barbieri & Zaccaria could hardly be bettered & Karajan was at this time the perfect conductor for the project. He conducts with great style & dash, while at no time apologising for the occasional vulgarities in the score. More modern recordings are uncut & here we have the cuts traditional at the time, but at least we get one verse of Leonora's cabaletta "tu vedrai". The sound has also been remarkably well freshened up in it's present transfer. Unless you really have to have modern stereo digital sound, buy it. And, even if you have another recording, acquire this as well. You won't regret it!

5 out of 5 stars The greatest Leonora!.......2004-07-02

I couldn't agree more with the reviews stating that Callas' Leonora is unsurpassed. Björling called this Leonora "sheer perfection". Unbeatable!

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant!.......2004-06-13

The dream-team Callas-di Stefano comes together once more to record I'll Trovatore! And how beautifully they did it! Herbert von Karajan's conducting is supreme, Callas sings the definite Leonora, di Stefano sounds passionate and loving as Manrico and Barbieri kicks ass as Azucena. To the guy who said that if Callas had Milanov as a rival she'd fall on her face, Callas and Milanov performed at the same time! So there! The best Trovatore ever!

5 out of 5 stars The best Leonora forever.......2004-05-16

Period! Di Stefano sounds surprisingly on fire as the ill-fated Manrico, Barbieri COMMANDS as Azucena and Panerei is a fabulous di Luna. Von Karajan conducts mastefully. Not the only Trovatore but one of the very best!

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful and amazing.......2004-04-04

This Trovatore has been called a landmark by critics and fans alike. Callas in in exquisite form, di Stefano sounds passionate, ardent and luscious and Panerei is a surprisingly fierce di Luna. Von Karajan conducts this PERFECTLY. Buy this and marvel at a vocal wonder!

5 out of 5 stars A great tribute for a truly great artist.......2007-04-22

If you want to know about Tito Gobbi, this is the set for you. Truly the very best of this phenomenal baritone, one of those rara avis in opera (both a great singer and a great actor).
On both CDs, is Gobbi in his finest: from comedy (All'idea di quel metallo/Come Paride vezzoso) to tragedy (Nemico della Patria), from grand opera (Cruda, funesta smania) to verismo (Si puo?).
The first CD includes some selections of less known operas (such as Zazà, Fedora, I gioielli della Madonna or L'arlesiana) that adds value thanks to Gobbi's artistry.
But it is truly on the second CD where Gobbi shines as the powerful artist he was. Devoted entirely to Giuseppe Verdi's incredible rols for baritone, track after track Gobbi reveals himself as one of the milestones in opera; his deeply emotional approach of Di Provenza il mar (La Traviata) and A tal nome palpito (Simon Boccanegra) matches perfectly with the grandeur of Eri tu (Un ballo in maschera) or Dio che nell'alma infondere (Don Carlo), and chilling Pietà rispetto amore (Macbeth) and Iago's Credo (Otello).
Cherry over the cake: his portrait of Falstaff...

Do not miss this album. Not only a excellent tribute to Gobbi, but also one of the best double sets of The Very Best series of EMI.

5 out of 5 stars Pleased to find this CD........2006-11-10

A wonderful collection of the roles sung by this superb and multi-talented
baritone of days long gone. In 65 years as an opera lover, I never heard a
better Figaro or a more bone-chilling Scarpia.

This collection, whose French title might be translated "Verdi Vocal Rarities," is a unique contribution to the Verdi centennial year. Its 136 selections on eight compact discs offer an in-depth survey of singers who recorded notable Verdi performances during the era of 78-rpm recording. Coincidentally, this period covers, within a few years, the half- century after the composer's death, in 1901. Some of the singers in the earliest cuts--tenor Francesco Tamagno and bass Victor Maurel, for example--had known Verdi and sung for him. Many of the singers will be familiar to connoisseurs of Verdi discography--Enrico Caruso, Boris Christoff, Fedora Barbieri, Ezio Pinza, Elisabeth Schwarzkopf, Tito Gobbi, Beniamino Gigli, and Jussi Bjoerling, to name a few. Others, such as Frieda Hempel, Emmy Destinn, Martha Modl, Joseph Schwarz, Gino Cigna, and Mattia Battistini, are names you come across in books about opera, but you have heard their voices only if you spend a lot of time with historic recordings. And a lot of performances, including some of the best, are likely to be the work of singers encountered for the first time.

Most of the big moments from Verdi's operas are included--grouped by opera, not by chronological order of recording. There are a few strange omissions; for example, the "Miserere" scene from Il trovatore. But other selections, such as "Ah fors' e lui" and "La donna e mobile," are given in two or three performances--sometimes in French, German, or Russian as well as Italian. Some of the performances are classics; many are mind-boggling.

Some favorite Verdi singers--Maria Callas, Joan Sutherland, Placido Domingo, and Luciano Pavarotti, among them--are absent because they began recording after the collection's cutoff date. Other problems are mostly related to the dates of the original recordings. The sound is all pre-high-fidelity and sometimes quite primitive, though some remarkable work has been done to optimize the earliest items. The annotations are minimal--mostly the date, venue, and performers in each cut, with pictures of the biggest stars. This decision was probably made to keep the price low, and those who already know most of the arias and ensembles will likely find the tradeoff acceptable. --Joe McLellan

4 out of 5 stars Rare but well-polished Verdi gems........2001-10-21

Classical music enthusiasts will have become aware that EMI have been marketing several boxed sets with a French title containing the word "introuvables". The word suggests that when you open the box you'll find items that are so rare as to be almost unobtainable. It suggests also that their rarity is not due only to age or production limitations, it is also due to the incomparability of their quality.

Few would quibble about the quality of what is to be found in this splendid collection of Verdi "introuvables". You will hear how Emmy Destinn portrayed Aida yearning for her homeland in 1908, and how Elisabeth Schwarzkopf portrayed Violetta intereacting with her lover's father in 1953. You will hear several items duplicated. Francesco Navarini, recorded in 1907 with a piano, makes a stunning Fiesco in the "Simon Boccanegra" prologue, as is not up-staged by the more familiar Alexander Kipnis version which follows.

You might regret that your favourite Verdi record is not here. You'll have opportunities to make comparisons, however. I could never believe that anyone could equal Giuseppe de Luca'a 1930 "O sommo Carlo" from "Ernani, but here I have a chance to hear for the first time how the famous baritone Mattia Battistini did it in 1906.

Keith Hardwick compiled and transferred this collection originally in the late 1980s. He has augmented and transferred that issue onto 8 CDs, and provided the annotations. Full recording details are provided, there are many singer photographs but no singer biographies.

The recording dates range from 1903 to 1953. Sadly, almost all the singers - Dame Elisabeth Schwarzkopf being a notable exception - are all dead by now. Those of us who have opportunities to hear and collect their work, however, can be grateful that the older we get the better it sounds. Indeed, I have never heard any of the items included here in better transfers. Elsewhere I have given this issue a five star rating. Subsequent hearings have made me aware of a technical matter which may bother some listeners. This set has been transferred from the long playing records on which it was originally issued. Their pristine sound quality has been preserved but also some of the ghostly "swish" that accompanied each revolution.

5 out of 5 stars What poor sound?.......2007-01-27

Was I just lucky and happened to get the one copy with good sound? I doubt it. Don't be put off by these complaints about sound; this version is pretty far up there among Opera d'Oro offerings as far as sound goes. And, obviously, the performance speaks for itself with this conductor, these singers and this orchestra.

5 out of 5 stars why did i wait so long to buy this?.......2006-07-02

Don't debate whether to buy this or not, just do it! If you are deciding between different releases, get this D'oro one, it sounds fine. In fact, it sounds better than most studio recordings of the 50's. Regarding the performance itself, it must be the fulfillment of Verdi's vision of what Trovatore is supposed to sound like. Yes, it's missing a verse or a line here and there, but so what?! There are countless complete recordings, and none match up to this one. Trovatore recordings always ultimately disappoint me because I feel it is an opera which has almost limitless potential in terms of drama, singing, beauty etc., yet it is never quite reached. Even magnificent studio recordings with Ms. Price, Callas, and others never quite fulfill Trovatore's potential. This live recording from Salzburg does however. Ms. Price sounds literally out of this world. Her dramatic declamation is second to none as is her control and beauty of tone. Corelli is blazing as always and has a tragic tinge to his voice which serves the part of Manrico very well. Bastianini has one of the most thrilling and plangent voices i have ever heard and it is tragic he died so young. As for Simionato--all you have to do is compare her to Cossotto to see just how great she is. I know that sounds a bit messed up, but Simionato has such a wonderfully high placed mezzo that betrays no signs of struggle and is actually pleasant to listen to. None of that wild screeching or howling that is usually associated with the part of Azucena. Lastly, Karajan conducts a fast-paced red blooded performance (except for an odd Ah si ben mio) which is much better than his later trovatore's.

3 out of 5 stars This one is for Price and Corelli completists.......2004-01-18

In the opera house this would have been a performance to treasure. On disc, this "Trovatore" is pretty well done-in by the sound.

By no means should this be anyone's first or only "Trovatore," but for the collectors of any of the top principals or even of Herr Doktor von K, it's worth a try.

    5 out of 5 stars Good Sound?.......2004-01-12

Well. If you want good sound, go get the Deutsche Grammophon official version. The premium is worth the clarity.

    3 out of 5 stars It's a complete shame!.......2001-12-01

Well, this is a beautiful performance, it is a shame the sound qualiy is SOOOOOOOO BADDDD!!!!!! . I Have a old recording of Maria Callas in "Lucia...", which is supposed to be recorded in a somewhat similar way than this, and it sounds SPARKLING clear when compared to this recording. unfortunately, it sounds VERY blurry. Reminds me a lot of old tape.to-tape-to-tape recordings.. If you don't mind, it is a beautiful performance, and its CHEAP. But if you mind sound, well.........
