Finally, the listening public is treated to a Morricone compilation that focuses on his more daring, outre, and lesser known score music. Nothing against his better-known spaghetti western soundtrack work; there is a reason after all that stuff is so well known, because it's fantastic and wholly original. But did you know the dude scored more films than any other composer (over 500), that his discography is twice that of Sun Ra, that he made amazing psychedelia and crazy funk and subtle experimental music? Assembled by the brilliant musician/ musical curator Alan Bishop for Mike Patton's Ipecac label with liner notes by John Zorn, the aptly titled Crime and Dissonance is culled from extremely rare releases from the early `70s. It's strange stuff, but very enjoyable and easily among the finest and most necessary reissues of the entire year. --Mike McGonigal

2 out of 5 stars What's Essential About This?.......2007-04-21

A sticker on the jewel case proclaims Crime and Dissonance "an absolutely essential Morriconography". A couple of listens had me wondering what is so essential about this? Unfortunately, essential is an abused term when it comes to describing music. This might be said to be essential if you are a Morricone completeist, but when you compare the quality of the music here with that of some of his other compositions, you'll find that Crime and Dissonance is rather easily dispensible.
Is the music here unusual? Quite. But the question must be asked why anyone would sit around and just listen to it. This stuff belongs in a movie. Unlike many other Morricone compositions, the pieces here do not fit with any kind of mood you might have except that generated while you are watching a film.
I know a lot of folks with broad musical tastes, but I don't know of anyone who would listen to this CD just for pleasure or even for background music unless one was operating a commercial haunted house or having some kind of themed party. There's too much other better Morricone music out there!
I like Ennio Morricone and I am sure these pieces fit in the contexts for which they were intended, but I could have gone on quite happily without ever having heard Crime and Dissonance.

3 out of 5 stars Pros and Cons.........2006-03-10

Pros:
Ennio Morricone was a terrific experimental composer. This music is Wierd.

Cons:
Kind of wierd combination of songs.. a lot of them don't feel like they should be on the same album.

1 out of 5 stars Love Morricone, hate this collection.......2006-01-08

It's as if they took the most obnoxious parts they could find, and memorialized them.

Morricone is the master. But this collection misrepresents his genius.

I guess the Dissonance part in the title excuses all.

5 out of 5 stars Essential Morricone.......2005-12-20

Crime and Dissonance is by far the best collection of Ennio Morricone's film music on the market. Primarily, because it focuses exclusively on a phase of Morricone's career that's largely been ignored (until now). This 2 disc collection contains some of Morricone's most startling, dark, spooky and adventurous music. Composed largely for obscure Italian horror movies and crime dramas, the music contained here is quite innovative for its time. Filled with almost avant jazz and psychedelic sounds, this is a great listen. The excellent tracklisting ignores chronology in favor of a thematic flow, and it works. This two disc set along with one of the many fine Morricone Western score collections is essential for any good music library. The man was far more than just a film composer, as this disc proves. Excellent.

2 out of 5 stars Another Morriconne Collection.......2005-12-14

This compilation is gifted with lush photographs that depict the films they represent. However, not only are there far more vibrant Morriconne compilations available but the majority of these "rare" tracks already exist on other compilations. I love and treasure anything by Morriconne but, this compilation seems inappropriate especially with the Thriller Collection available (which mirrors this compilation in selections and tone). Out of the Argento/Morriconne collection, main titles compilations, and miscellaneous other soundtracks this one ranks among Wolf at a groveling beautiful suspensful mediocrity. But, when mediocore is written in the same sentence as Morriconne; one can only expect it to be the most heavenly kind of medicore.

Even though it's immensely likable, there's a demo-ish quality to hotshot Brazilian producer Apollo Nove's Res Inexplicata Volans. In 12 tracks that trickle through nostalgia-tipped tropicalia to a backward-reaching brand of electronica, he paints himself as something of a sound savant; trot out a hot beat or an expressive voice, he seems to be saying, and step aside--he'll do the rest. It's a cock-sure approach, but it mostly pays off. Though not radically new or groundbreaking, the sonic textures he dabbles in (vintage rock, bossa nova, disco, jazz) are nothing if not interesting, and they lend this disc a chilled-out moodiness that seems rightest in the pre-dawn hours. Singer Seu Jorge's two tracks, the all-out gorgeous "Ensaboar Voce (Soap You)" and "Capoeira," captivate most completely--if there's a love letter to Sao Paulo somewhere on this record, he's the one holding the pen--but overall the vibe is fluttery, uncemented. Put it on and plug in your headphones--as you get lost in late-night Apollo Nove land, you'll want to wander and ponder alone. --Tammy La Gorce

Album Description

How do you describe someone as eclectic as Apollo Nove? A modern-day pop Tropicalista, crooner, songwriter, pianist and collector of over sixty vintage synths, keyboards and effects from the `60s, `70s and `80s. Apollo Nove (noh-veh) is the prime contender for most innovative young producer in Brazil. Res Inexplicata Volans is his stellar solo effort of twelve melodious, deep, moody songs that hover somewhere between psychedelic rock, eerie electronica and spacey folk. Recorded in São Paulo and mixed in Paris by Air engineer Yann Arnaud. Guest vocalists include Cibelle and Seu Jorge.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Terrific Album.......2007-03-08

I'm shocked... that I'm the first person to review this album since it's been out for a year. Apollo Nove's an artist on the Ziriguiboom/Crammed label (Six Degrees Records in the USA) that's actually been around the music scene for quite a while and wasn't a stranger to several artists on the label or earlier releases. This is his 'debut' album and I think it was pretty good! But mind you - this is NOT your traditional Bossa Nova or MPB sound.

It's a trippy experience. Apollo really wanted to go towards the experimental vibes, heavy with sampling, electronica and live musicianship and he invited some great guests to appear. The blend's pretty good and while most of the time it works out fantastically ("Traz Um Alivio") for some, I think it might be too far off the beaten path. The album starts out with an erratic beat and neat song "Mr. Right Now", featuring Cibelle, and is followed up nicely by one of the album highlights "Traz Um Alivio" featuring Tita Lima. Very spacey tune - the guitar is an awesome touch and Tita's one to look out for in the future. "Ensaboar Voce" is oddly erotic... until the singin' starts. To be honest, I love the song and there's not much wrong with the featured singer (Seu Jorge, after all, s fantastic!), it's just that the song might've had an even better effect without vocals. I also really dug 86, by rapidly rising singer "Ceu" - but the ending really kicks with an amazing guitar and baseline. You can already tell it'll be a sort of anthem on tv spots, but it's got a neat effect to it. "I?m a Rocker" had a cool vibe to it... in a dark sort of way and I dug that Seu Jorge featured later in "Capoeira" while Tita Lima also came back to close the album with "Entre Eu E Voce". Great wind-down.

I recommend this. I hate to say it, but after 7-8 years, it's probably the closest I've heard to a sound or approach similar to the late Suba. Remember, he featured Taciana, Katia B, Cibelle as the haunting vocals on SPC, and here we've got Tita Lima bursting into the scene. And then again, he was on this very label too and no doubt probably worked with Apollo and vice-versa at some point in time. It won't be for everyone... again it's not MPB or Bossa nova or pop Brasil or anything like it. And there were maybe one or two songs I didn't care much for (the title track). But it's a very mellow album, very experimental. It's bliss for anyone that liked Suba and have long wanted to hear something similar. You might also like Democustico's newest album too - there are a few similarities there.

4 out of 5 stars The best chill and erotica box set ever!!!.......2005-03-16

I must agree with the previous writer; this CD set contains CDS-200 copy protection which requires you to install a program on your cpu to play highly compressed versions of the songs that sound like garbage! If one pays for the cd, then why can they not copy it to his player of choice? The music industry is totally going about combatting music piracy the wrong way! Maybe they should lower CD prices to compete with piracy, but then they would lose their huge profits. We all know that the musicians see little of that money anyway.

Enough of my ranting... this boxset is absolutely amazing! Forget about Morricone's spaghetti western music... this is where it is! The first disc is my absolute favorite, then followed by the third. His unique arrangements are comparable to no one. Although, the lounge revival is long past us, this music is timeless and will leave you begging for more.

Check out the soundtracks to Le Casse, Forbidden Photos of a Lady Above Suspicion, and La Donna Invisible.

5 out of 5 stars Great Box Set but has Copy Protection!.......2004-09-22

Ennio Morricone is the master of Italian soundtracks. Listening to these gems transports you inside the movies! This is a great box set especially at the price being offered by Amazon. This same box set goes for $50 and more at other sites. But there's something very ugly lurking in this box set: It has the Macrovision CDS-200 copy protection. Which means people who enjoy taking their music with them on portable devices will have lots of Internet searching to do to find out how to rip these 3 wonderful CDs! Shame on Amazon for not pointing this out in their description. Other internet sites that sell this box set, do disclaim that it has copy protection. Macrovision has supposedly released a CDS-300 version of their copy protection, but there is no news regarding whether this box set will be re-released with the newer copy protection. The new version does allow you to rip it for personal use.

You can get around it, I won't tell you how, but you can! No, I'm not a pirate, I own over 800 CDs that I've purchased all legally, I don't trade my mp3s, but I like to take my music with me.

It's a shame that people like me that do purchase CDs instead of downloading the crap that's out there have to pay the price.

        Sincerely,

        Frank Castro

        5 out of 5 stars Mucho Maestro.......2004-06-10

I'm not sure which is more amazing--the sheer overwhelming volume of films Ennio Morricone has scored over the years, or the fact that he has produced so much beautiful music in the service of so many obscure, second-rate and otherwise forgettable ones. There is a generous sampling of the latter on display in this 3-disc set, culled from late-sixties and early-seventies films whose titles even the most hardcore of movie--or Morricone--fans would be hard-pressed to recognize. And yet, as always, the variety, the quality and the beauty of the music is unsurpassed. This is a compilation for the Morricone collector who thinks he's heard it all before--there is very little of the overlap or duplication found in so many of the other compilations of this great artist's work. All of which gives the music a fresh, vibrant quality while remaining unmistakably, inimitably Morricone. Cool packaging too.

2 out of 5 stars Remembering Past Enchantments And Past Ills.......2004-06-07

Few composers outside of the classical canon have expressed the ineffable as beautifully as Ennio Morricone. The Italian Morricone, who has written scores of wildly varying quality for over 400 films, came to international prominence with and is still best - known in America for his "Spaghetti Western" scores of several classic Sergio Leone films of the Sixties, such as A Fistful of Dollars (1964), The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly (1966), and Once Upon A Time In The West (1969).

With the Leone scores, Morricone created musical pieces structured like complex mathematical equations, many of which were suffused with a driving, hypnotic, and archetypal power. In fact, the soundtrack for The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly was so dramatically dynamic that it thoroughly outstripped the finished film in terms of imaginative potential. Only with Once Upon A Time In The West did Leone create a film well crafted and realized enough to match Morricone's entrancing, playful, and occasionally perditious score. Similarly, Dario Argento's The Bird With The Crystal Plumage (1969) almost completely failed to utilize Morricone's contribution, the best portions of which were heard only dimly and sporadically in the finished film. Leone's late masterpiece, Once Upon A Time In America (1984), two - thirds a perfect film, also failed to fully rise to the occasion of Morricone's simultaneously poignant, wistful, and wonderfully exuberant score.

Today, Morricone's work is available on literally hundreds of soundtracks and soundtrack compilations dedicated to the composer, very few of which are entirely satisfying. An Ennio Morricone Anthology (1995), which contains 45 tracks from 39 films produced in Italy from 1965 onward, perpetuates this frustrating tradition.

Of the 45 tracks, about a third represent Morricone realizing or approaching the height of his talent, another third are fairly interesting but ultimately repetitious and self-cannibalizing, and the final third, which may have worked reasonably well within the context of the films they were written for, never rise above the status of shrill, discordant, and bellowing kitsch (several attempt a Henry Mancini - like levity and fall flat). In fact, there is a great deal of healthy, raw, and leveling vulgarity even in some of Morricone's most famous compositions, such as "Le Vent, Le Cri" from 1981's The Professional and "Chi Mai" from 1971's Maddalena, both of which are included.

Those seeking haunting compositions on the scale of "L'Estasi Dell 'Oro" or "Il Triello" from The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly or "Poverty" from Once Upon A Time In America will be disappointed to find very few pieces approaching their caliber here, especially if already familiar with such well - known pieces such as "Moscow Farewell" from the 1987 film of the same name or the otherworldly "Il Gatto A Nove Code" from The Cat O' Nine Tails (1971).

As compositions of vastly different quality are interspersed amongst one another in dizzying array, many may find An Ennio Morricone Anthology virtually impossible to listen to from beginning to end without skipping tracks repeatedly. As a genius whose greatest compositions address both the immanent and the transcendent, both perdition and salvation, both the archaic and the modern, Morricone and his admirers deserve a more carefully selected and thoughtfully produced anthology than this haphazard collection offers.

5 out of 5 stars Delightful scores from Ennio Morricone.......1998-12-19

Few composers in film music today are as greatly admired as Ennio Morricone whose scores for a wide range of screen fares and many Oscar nominations and wins have attracted the attention of fans all over the world. This compilation is one of the best and contains very fine original musics and rare tracks of this Italian composer.
