Liona Boyd.......2007-03-26

It's interesting, I think, to note how Miss Boyd's style and technique seem to polarise the current reviews for her album "The Spanish Album". I certainly wasn't aware that Miss Boyd is regarded as "a light weight" in the classical guitar world.

I can only say that as a humble amateur classical guitarist, I remain an avid admirer of her interpretation of several of the standard classics on this album.

Her virtuosity in Gran Jota has already been referred to: may I also single out the sweet expressiveness of her playing in Capricio Arabe (which I suggest cannot be matched by any other modern recording)as well as the fascinating discords in Asturias.

Liona is the Queen of Classical Guitar Technique?????.......2006-01-20

Yes, and I'm Clark Kent, reporter for a small town daily. Liona Boyd achieved her fame through non musical means. As a musician she leaves a great deal to be desired. Her technique is modest. Her interpretive skills are nonexistent. Proclaiming her "queen of classical guitar technique" is only revealing of one's ignorance. I only wish there was a zero star rating.

If you wish to hear the real McCoy I recommend Martha Masters.

Boyd is, in fact, considered a lightweight in the world of classical guitar. Sure, she's sold recordings, but not anything worth listening to. If you're looking for excellent female classical guitarrists, look for Antigoni Goni and Sharon Isbin. Don't waste your ears on Boyd.

Beautiful, yet sound poor sound quality........2000-04-10

Personally, I enjoy live recordings of this kind of music. The sound of the guitarrist's breathing and his fingers on the strings give it an intimate quality missing in studio recordings. A sick audience member hacking away with a cough spoils the mood on occassion, and the wild applause hurts my ears after listening to the soft music on headphones. If that annoys you, it might be best to look for a different recording.

TOO MUCH COUGHING on recording with music!!.......1999-05-17

The music is, of course, wonderful but the listener is unable to enjoy the artist on CD 2 because the recording includes CONTINUOUS COUGHING, presumably of someone in the audience (example: CD-2, track 10, 3:16-3:22). I would love to get this recording without the coughing as I have a particular love for some of the pieces.

I have an LP record by MCA of London "Mexicana Segovia" - is this on CD??

great audience-friendly classics for belly dancers........2004-03-11

This is a classic. It's so popular that it's often called "The Blue Door" (since that's what's on its cover).

The content is mostly Arabic songs that were popular with American dancers 30 years ago. Track 2, Nahna Wil Amar Jiran, is one of my favorite veil pieces. There is also a song in English "Dance, Samra, Dance", which is one of two songs praising a dancer. (And don't we love dancing to that?)

The songs are nice and short, which is great for putting together routines. Most are under 3 minutes, and there are three of them under two minutes.

The presentation is very "Amerab" (American interpretation of Arabic material), so if you prefer the large orchestra sound of classical arabic music, you might not like this. However, it's very audience-friendly.

A note about the release date: this was Bilezikjian's first album, which was recorded in 1975; the 2003 date listed on Amazon is date the CD version came out.

I'm not giving this album 5 stars, since I prefer his later work, such as "The Magic of John Bilezikjian". Still, I highly recommend this one.

This is the kind of music you want to play yourself as a pianist with a friend. Where is the sheet music? It's really appetizing. You want to hear more of this composer, modern with a sniff of Bulgarian folk music.

At first sight, this 4 Cds set is quite pale with a more than sober presentation, entirely flat green coloured. But overcoming this unusual appearance worthed the price. Lets mention for instance, the booklet: 43 pages, an anthology by itself. Well documented and full of explanations, pictures, details of all kinds, it's a must to the listening.

This project of revitalizing special historical organs, 32 here, is very interesting by the variety of pieces and styles, all put together to entertain people. Let put it that way: it's a popular approach to classical organ, not too crunchy for an unfamiliar audience. Just few theatre organ pieces which are frankly not my cup of tea.

With four Cds, the repertoire is ample (more then 50 pieces), and the variety of genre makes room for everyone's taste. The only weakness, which is not proper to this particular set, is some lack in interpretation, maybe due to the variety of the repertoire without common approach. So, what it gains in size may be lost in style. Few interpretations are fair and recording at times, quite standard.

Few good discoveries though: Sowerby's Pageant Cd 1,1 with a continuo on the pedal : an athletic performance, Roger Ducasse Cd 1,2 quite exiting. The Chopin Cd 1,3 could be better. Rapidly performed, this piece is to my view, better on piano, so the organ deep breathing is not very accurate, but for sure, it makes the effect. Pieces including quires are very interesting and easy going: Cd 2,3 for instance puts you in the mood of sing along !

On the whole, a good set for collectors, those who like organ as instrument more then repertoire, those who prefer a relaxing and pure pleasure of listening while in concert on weekdays... Nothing heavy or too much conceptual as some other organ performances are at times.
