5 out of 5 stars Natural Genius.......2007-06-01

Agreed with David McKinney's review fully. Caetano's quote in the liner notes says it all: "Gil believes in God. I believe in him."

This man Gil in my estimation stands with Mother Teresa, Vaclav Havel, Martin Luther King....it's no wonder that Brazilians burst into tears when he appears....his songs have the same effect on me and I can hardly speak a lick of Portuguese!

5 out of 5 stars 8th Wonder of the World?.......2007-05-17

It's entirely possible that someone, somewhere, at some time, has created a recording of greater honesty, peace, and pure musical achievement than this one--I just haven't heard it yet.

Gil is a musical prophet, statesman, and healer; I regard this record as one of the greatest artistic achievements of humankind.

To know that a human being currently residing on the planet is capable of this is comforting and inspiring to me more than words could possibly convey.

5 out of 5 stars Still the master.......2007-05-08

A very nice mix of old and new Gil sounds. Alive as always.

5 out of 5 stars Asolutely Delighted..........2006-08-07

Delighted indeed. Outstanding sound quality, for a live recording of this sort. I close my eyes, and feel as though I'm in an intimate setting with Gilberto. I was searching diligently for a Gil recording entitled "Nighting Gale", and not having found it, I settled for this one. Not at all disappointed, though I'd still like to replace the other, since my vinyl copy of it is now unplayable. Back to the point of this blurb... "Acoustic" is a delight.

3 out of 5 stars An "F" for packaging, a "C+" for Music .......2006-07-27

Don't you hate when when you go to a restraunt and you order a sprite or 7-up, the server brings you your drink...you take a gulp expecting a sprite and you get a mouth full of water. Not that water was bad for you but you WANTED A SPRITE.

That's the best way to view this CD. First here are the Cons: I believed that this comp was a collection of Acoustic tracks from his LP's ( Like the Lennon Comp of the same name). Nowhere on the package does it say that this is a Live concert. Now I can accept that...but the packaging says nothing when or where this concert was performed or if it was a series of concerts that was comped into one cd. Also the package tells me nowhere if these songs were brand new or live versions from other LPS. I can and have done the research but this is very basic info that should be printed on the package. It's very difficult to find this type of info in the US. It should be called "Live Acoustic ". So it was quite a big dissapointed when I popped it into the CD player.

The Pros: One of my favorite Samba songs ever are on this CD Drao and a few other tracks. This was my first intro to Gil and in my personal opinion not a great starter CD to Gil studio career, so I plan to get a copies of his studio albums. Also it isn't an expensive cd and that's good. I like the CD but it wasn't what I expected.

5 out of 5 stars Gilberto Gil rocks my world!.......2004-09-14

I first heard about this album when it was reccomended to me by a Brazilian pen pal I happened to meet in Seattle during her visit here on business. She insisted that I purchase it for myself and I am really glad that I did. I first heard him on "Beleza Tropical" volume 1, a compilation of different Brazilian artists' greatest classic hits put together by David Byrne (former Talking Head). Gilberto Gil has that wonderful combination of technical talent on the guitar, as well as a soft, expressive singing voice best-described as "cloud-like." (soft, fluffy and delicate) It's amazing when you begin to measure the tone of his voice with the content of his songs, though. Gil wrote all of the songs on this album (with the exception of his cover of "The Secret Life of Plants" written by Stevie Wonder for the film of the same name). He tackles some very intense topics (including mythology, the delicate state of the ecosystem and reconciliation)

My favorite cuts include "A Novidade" (a song about a beautiful mermaid which is a metaphor for the ravaged state of planet Earth and the devistation of the physical environment we are destroying through carelessness and lack of compassion), "A Drao" (a thoughtful, introspective song to his love), "Expresso 2222" (a cautionary song about the new millenium) and "Palco" (which sounds largely autobiographical).

The beauty of Gil's music is the mixture of contemporary guitar riffs and the use of the Brazilian berimbau and tradional percussion instruments. Share this with friends and family!

5 out of 5 stars A Must-Have for a Well-Rounded Music Collection!.......2002-05-24

If you are looking for a place to start either with Gilberto Gil or just with Brazilian music, you've found the right place. This is collection of just about everything from ballads with Gil's sweet crooning to the upbeat samba beat trademark to this region's sound. Most of Gil's most notable classics can be found on this cd and the recording definitely captures the energy of the live performance. I personally love Gilberto Gil's voice and could listen to this cd over and over without tiring of it. I would recommend it to anyone interested in expanding their tastes to include something with a little more flavor.

It is so wonderful to listen to. This CD is a MUST HAVE for your collection, believe me. After listening to this, Gilberto became my favorite male Brazilian artist.

What a wonderful new world of music!

When I first bought this CD, I knew very little of Gilberto Gil. I was simply looking for something Brazilian. Now, i can only slap myself over the head for not discovering him sooner. The man combines intelligent lyrics covering a wide range of subjects with a diverse rhythem covering multiple musical styles. This is a CD to be enjoyed by all, no matter what your tastes are. I have never heard anyone sing about the internet and quantum theory as poetically as Mr. Gil. This CD, as with the numerous Gilberto Gil CD's i have purchased since this one, is the true essence of songwriting and expression.

5 out of 5 stars Controversial, if anything... .......2006-03-21

Reading the reviews it is clear that one either loves or hates this disc. As a rational, sane judge of all things good, I obviously fall on the side of those who find this record to be brilliant. I read somewhere (maybe on the liner notes) that this record was recorded in 12 hours. As a jam session it is one of a kind for a couple of reasons. First, the playing is good. On a few tracks it is great. Somehow, in the 21st century, people have become so used to hearing records that have been over-produced and tweaked at the sound boards (Even Kiss' famous Alive record was "enhanced" in the studio after recording)that they forget what real live human beings playing real instruments in real time sounds like. Of course you get screw ups. But even the greatest musicians playing and conducting in the greatest symphonies in the world, performing the most difficult music in the world, are bound to play imperfectly, either too flat, or with too much passion, or with the wrong passion, or too technically, or not technically enough. This record is not a technically perfect record. But it has passion, feeling, and is a lot of fun.

there is one thing that is very quirky about this record that you can hear if you pay attention to it. Apparently Jorge Ben was in a very different mood from Gilberto Gil that day and each had a very different idea about what they wanted the recordings to sound like, and so that tension runs through every song. In the same year this record was recorded, Paulo Leminski published "Catatau", one of the most difficult, obscure books ever written in the Portuguese language. In "Catatau" there is a character named "Occam" who, although a reference to Ockham, is according to Leminski's notes derived from Afro Brazilian mythology also (maybe Ogum?): he is the monster of the irrational that disrupts and disturbs order and expectations. For me, Gilberto Gil on this record is Occam. Jorge Ben plays very tame, in tune, very orderly, and Gilberto Gil goes absolutely insane, doing everything he can to disrupt the order and focus that Jorge Ben insists on following, turning lyrics upside down, singing out of tune on purpose, turning his voice into a noise box, making odd sounds in the microphone in imitation of Jorge's guitar strumming, etc.

And as a listener it is wonderful to focus on that tension and musical push-and-shove and see how it plays out in song after song. The struggle between order and chaos reaches its high point in Taj Mahal. I cannot listen to the studio version of taj Mahal from Jorge Ben any more because it sounds so flat and lifeless after hearing the incredible performance on this record. If you thought Jorge Ben's Taj Mahal was a vibrant song before this record, it is odd to realize that Jorge Ben needed Gilberto Gil's obnoxious studio antics to breathe life into the song.

Clearly some listeners approached this record with the wrong frame of mind, or misunderstood much of it, or were simply obtuse enough to be insensitive to the order-disorder games that these two masters of Brazilian 70s pop were playing in the studio the day this record was recorded. For me, this record is golden, a gem now 30 years old and still alive.

5 out of 5 stars 5 stars.......2005-12-02

For two musicians to sit down and record this without intensive practice in one night is incredible. Their synergy must be heard to be believed. It is something of an extended jam--the tracks (most Ben's I believe) often run 10min or more, and they definitely feel expansive: allowing the playing itself to actually dictate the length of the songs. That doesn't bother me to the extent it might bother others who are more accustomed to hearing Gil and Ben's usually concisely written 3-and-half-minute pop-oriented songs.

The sets usually start out loose and a little uncoordinated, slowly getting tighter, until they are both furiously locked in at the finish. If you like Fela you'll appreciate this.

Also some of the greatest bass lines I have ever heard are here. Gil here is great, though his tendency to get Bobby McFerrinesque, endearing to some including myself, will probably alienate many; Ben is simply perfect, providing the grooves.

5 out of 5 stars Don't Listen To The Haters.......2005-10-10

I honestly don't understand how people can bash this recording. I will admit that it's not a perfect sonic masterpiece, nor are the recorded songs "tight", in a sense of the word. But the beauty of this record more than makes up for any flaws.

This record contains awesome jamming--as if you were hanging out at a beach party in Bahia, and Gil e Jorge were just having some fun with a couple acoustic guitars, a percussion player and a bass player. It also has some great vocal improvisation that never gets tiresome. The vocals are full of pure emotion, and it sounds as if the two are having a blast. This is an atmospheric record--it is about as close as you can come to transporting yourself to Brazil without getting on an airplane. Fun record, transcendant record--two pure musicians having a hell of a lot of fun. You will have fun too.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A difficult album to obtain!.......2001-04-24

Although Gil is supported by Os Mutantes on this album, he leans much more closely towards Brazilian Samba rhythms - than even on the first Mutantes album - and cosequently it sounds slightly more like traditional World Music faire. There are some great songs here though, particularly the slower moody acoustics Coragem Pra Suportar and Pega a Voga, although the more up-tempo numbers are propelled along vigorously by Roger Duprat's superb brassy orchestration. It's not Tropicalia as most people have come to know it through Mutantes and Veloso, but it's still great and unique music, if more typically Brazilian. If you see it knocking around a record shop - which you probably won't - I'd definitely recommend a purchase.

5 out of 5 stars stunning debut.......2001-04-14

One of the cornerstones of the Tropicalia movement, Gilberto Gil continues to be a major player worldwide, which, after hearing his debut lp, could be somewhat surprising save for his absolute brilliance.

From 1969, Gil's debut lp is simply one of the most stunning pieces of frenzied psychedelia this side of Tangerine Dream's blitzkrieg of "Electronic Meditation." His guitar work on this lp stands unsurpassed, in my view, in both its virtuosity and aggressiveness. It's out and out psychedelia, Brazilian style. Add to the mix the unabashed enthusiasm and equal brilliance of cult favorites Os Mutantes and the lesser known Beat Boys, and the cup of craziness runneth over.

This lp will be an eye-opener to both fans of Gil's recent offerings (which are glorious in their own right- his maturity as a songwriter and musician is staggering), those who are dipping their toe for the first time into the waters of Tropicalia to see if it is to their liking, and those who love psychedelia. Along with the 1st few lps by Os Mutantes and those of Tom Ze, Gil's debut offering is by far the most heady and experimental that the Tropicalia movement offers. A glorious album.

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars A Brazilian "tropicalia" classic.......2007-04-15

Songwriter-guitarist Gilberto Gil was, along with his collaborator Caetano Veloso, a founding member of the hippie-ish "tropicalia" movement, which merged Brazilian art forms with the psychedelic and "new wave" movements from Europe and the USA.

Gil's career took off at roughly the same time that Brazilian politics devolved into a military coup, and accordingly the great cultural radical ran afoul of the new dictatorship. In 1969 Veloso and Gil were arrested, then sent into European exile, where they remained for several years. This album was recorded in London, during that exile, and features Gil at his most searching and haunted. The album includes groovy acoustic versions of several songs that appear (in electrified, rock-funk form) on other albums, as well as some truly goofy, delerious English-language psych-folk tunes, including "Three Mushrooms," which has a Tim Buckley-ish spaciness to it. This expanded version includes three bonus tracks, most notably a cover of Steve Winwood's "Can't Find My Way Home," which takes on renewed poignance, given what Gil was going through at the time.

By the way, Gil certainly got his revenge: he and Veloso returned to Brazil in 1972 and became, despite the ongoing censorship and political paranoia, huge pop stars, and are considered two of the most influential musicians in modern Brazilian pop. Not only that, but Gil even went into politics himself, getting elected to office locally in Bahia, and is currently (in 2007) serving as the country's Minister of Culture. How's that for a happy ending? So, here he is in his youth, banished but not bowed, soaking up the psychedelic wackiness of Swinging London, and sending it back home for everyone to hear... And now you can, too!

      5 out of 5 stars Perfect Mix!!.......2007-04-24

These are the best songs of Gilberto Gil that can fit on one disc! He is one of my biggest heros, even though I'm not Brasilian. If I could spend the day, talking to anyone, it would be him!
