Natural Genius.......2007-06-01
This man Gil in my estimation stands with Mother Teresa, Vaclav Havel, Martin Luther King....it's no wonder that Brazilians burst into tears when he appears....his songs have the same effect on me and I can hardly speak a lick of Portuguese!
8th Wonder of the World?.......2007-05-17
Gil is a musical prophet, statesman, and healer; I regard this record as one of the greatest artistic achievements of humankind.
To know that a human being currently residing on the planet is capable of this is comforting and inspiring to me more than words could possibly convey.
Still the master.......2007-05-08

Asolutely Delighted..........2006-08-07
An "F" for packaging, a "C+" for Music .......2006-07-27
That's the best way to view this CD. First here are the Cons: I believed that this comp was a collection of Acoustic tracks from his LP's ( Like the Lennon Comp of the same name). Nowhere on the package does it say that this is a Live concert. Now I can accept that...but the packaging says nothing when or where this concert was performed or if it was a series of concerts that was comped into one cd. Also the package tells me nowhere if these songs were brand new or live versions from other LPS. I can and have done the research but this is very basic info that should be printed on the package. It's very difficult to find this type of info in the US. It should be called "Live Acoustic ". So it was quite a big dissapointed when I popped it into the CD player.
The Pros: One of my favorite Samba songs ever are on this CD Drao and a few other tracks. This was my first intro to Gil and in my personal opinion not a great starter CD to Gil studio career, so I plan to get a copies of his studio albums. Also it isn't an expensive cd and that's good. I like the CD but it wasn't what I expected.

Gilberto Gil rocks my world!.......2004-09-14
My favorite cuts include "A Novidade" (a song about a beautiful mermaid which is a metaphor for the ravaged state of planet Earth and the devistation of the physical environment we are destroying through carelessness and lack of compassion), "A Drao" (a thoughtful, introspective song to his love), "Expresso 2222" (a cautionary song about the new millenium) and "Palco" (which sounds largely autobiographical).
The beauty of Gil's music is the mixture of contemporary guitar riffs and the use of the Brazilian berimbau and tradional percussion instruments. Share this with friends and family!
A Must-Have for a Well-Rounded Music Collection!.......2002-05-24

pretty awesome.......2006-06-27
Controversial, if anything... .......2006-03-21
there is one thing that is very quirky about this record that you can hear if you pay attention to it. Apparently Jorge Ben was in a very different mood from Gilberto Gil that day and each had a very different idea about what they wanted the recordings to sound like, and so that tension runs through every song. In the same year this record was recorded, Paulo Leminski published "Catatau", one of the most difficult, obscure books ever written in the Portuguese language. In "Catatau" there is a character named "Occam" who, although a reference to Ockham, is according to Leminski's notes derived from Afro Brazilian mythology also (maybe Ogum?): he is the monster of the irrational that disrupts and disturbs order and expectations. For me, Gilberto Gil on this record is Occam. Jorge Ben plays very tame, in tune, very orderly, and Gilberto Gil goes absolutely insane, doing everything he can to disrupt the order and focus that Jorge Ben insists on following, turning lyrics upside down, singing out of tune on purpose, turning his voice into a noise box, making odd sounds in the microphone in imitation of Jorge's guitar strumming, etc.
And as a listener it is wonderful to focus on that tension and musical push-and-shove and see how it plays out in song after song. The struggle between order and chaos reaches its high point in Taj Mahal. I cannot listen to the studio version of taj Mahal from Jorge Ben any more because it sounds so flat and lifeless after hearing the incredible performance on this record. If you thought Jorge Ben's Taj Mahal was a vibrant song before this record, it is odd to realize that Jorge Ben needed Gilberto Gil's obnoxious studio antics to breathe life into the song.
Clearly some listeners approached this record with the wrong frame of mind, or misunderstood much of it, or were simply obtuse enough to be insensitive to the order-disorder games that these two masters of Brazilian 70s pop were playing in the studio the day this record was recorded. For me, this record is golden, a gem now 30 years old and still alive.
5 stars.......2005-12-02
The sets usually start out loose and a little uncoordinated, slowly getting tighter, until they are both furiously locked in at the finish. If you like Fela you'll appreciate this.
Also some of the greatest bass lines I have ever heard are here. Gil here is great, though his tendency to get Bobby McFerrinesque, endearing to some including myself, will probably alienate many; Ben is simply perfect, providing the grooves.
Don't Listen To The Haters.......2005-10-10
This record contains awesome jamming--as if you were hanging out at a beach party in Bahia, and Gil e Jorge were just having some fun with a couple acoustic guitars, a percussion player and a bass player. It also has some great vocal improvisation that never gets tiresome. The vocals are full of pure emotion, and it sounds as if the two are having a blast. This is an atmospheric record--it is about as close as you can come to transporting yourself to Brazil without getting on an airplane. Fun record, transcendant record--two pure musicians having a hell of a lot of fun. You will have fun too.

A difficult album to obtain!.......2001-04-24
stunning debut.......2001-04-14
From 1969, Gil's debut lp is simply one of the most stunning pieces of frenzied psychedelia this side of Tangerine Dream's blitzkrieg of "Electronic Meditation." His guitar work on this lp stands unsurpassed, in my view, in both its virtuosity and aggressiveness. It's out and out psychedelia, Brazilian style. Add to the mix the unabashed enthusiasm and equal brilliance of cult favorites Os Mutantes and the lesser known Beat Boys, and the cup of craziness runneth over.
This lp will be an eye-opener to both fans of Gil's recent offerings (which are glorious in their own right- his maturity as a songwriter and musician is staggering), those who are dipping their toe for the first time into the waters of Tropicalia to see if it is to their liking, and those who love psychedelia. Along with the 1st few lps by Os Mutantes and those of Tom Ze, Gil's debut offering is by far the most heady and experimental that the Tropicalia movement offers. A glorious album.

Released in 1971 While Gil Gilberto was Living in London, this is the Third Self-titled Release from the Bossa Nova and Tropicalia Legend. A Tropicalia Classic.Customer Reviews:
A Brazilian "tropicalia" classic.......2007-04-15
Gil's career took off at roughly the same time that Brazilian politics devolved into a military coup, and accordingly the great cultural radical ran afoul of the new dictatorship. In 1969 Veloso and Gil were arrested, then sent into European exile, where they remained for several years. This album was recorded in London, during that exile, and features Gil at his most searching and haunted. The album includes groovy acoustic versions of several songs that appear (in electrified, rock-funk form) on other albums, as well as some truly goofy, delerious English-language psych-folk tunes, including "Three Mushrooms," which has a Tim Buckley-ish spaciness to it. This expanded version includes three bonus tracks, most notably a cover of Steve Winwood's "Can't Find My Way Home," which takes on renewed poignance, given what Gil was going through at the time.
By the way, Gil certainly got his revenge: he and Veloso returned to Brazil in 1972 and became, despite the ongoing censorship and political paranoia, huge pop stars, and are considered two of the most influential musicians in modern Brazilian pop. Not only that, but Gil even went into politics himself, getting elected to office locally in Bahia, and is currently (in 2007) serving as the country's Minister of Culture. How's that for a happy ending? So, here he is in his youth, banished but not bowed, soaking up the psychedelic wackiness of Swinging London, and sending it back home for everyone to hear... And now you can, too!
