4 out of 5 stars Debut of a popular Brazilian diva.......2004-12-15

Nana Caymmi, daughter of songwriter Dorival Caymmi, is one of Brazil's most famous ballad singers. This is her debut album, from 1967. It's a little rough around the edges, but certainly worth checkking out.

4 out of 5 stars Still sounds good 40 years on.......2005-12-19

I got this CD on a chance, having never heard of the singer, and was pleasantly surprised. Most of the songs are upbeat and sound great 40 years later, with a punchy horn section. The ballads are drenched in syrupy strings of the sixties, and those don't hold up so well. But most of the songs and arrangements still have infectious energy that you'll want to hear more than once.

4 out of 5 stars Fun debut album by a lesser-known Brazilian pop star.......2003-04-10

The 1965 premiere of this soft-edged MPB singer opens with a bang: "Samba De Copa Na Mao," written by Taiguara, along with about half the other songs, has an explosive, energetic quality, reminiscent of contemporaries such as Edu Lobo and Marcos Valle. His vocals are youthful, expansive and jubilant, the rhythms are playful and dynamic. Things settle down pretty quickly, though, as slower pop ballads start to predominate, prefiguring the more placid style that become his hallmark. As far as Taiguara's more vital, vibrant side goes, this early album, with arrangements by Luis Chaves, is one of your best bets. Worth checking out!

5 out of 5 stars INCREDIBLE FIRST ALBUM!.......2006-06-26

Ok. I know most of you think of ECM Gismonti when Egberto Gismonti is mentioned. But the stuff from his homeland is great too, and produced with a whole diferent 'third world' perspective giving each piece a unique 'sound' not found in his polished european publications. So what does this sound like? Complex, brazilian and (oddly) mediterranean, avant-gardish and romantic-yet-always-somber ...these will be the type of songs (with a bit of jazz thrown here and there for showing Gismonti's chops) you will find in this fine disc. The end result is simply very original and stunning! Recommended if you like his brazilian work.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting very first album of Gismonti.......2004-12-12

Gismonti has been amazingly prolific in making many great albums from early 70's up to mid 90's.

Typically, his music is somewhat "rough" but very powerfull, emotive, rich, risky and bold during all the 70's. It is mostly acoustic work with many Gismonti's vocals too. It is a little difficult to access because of the complexity; but once you are in, it will stay with you forever. Most of this earlier work is under EMI label or lately reissued under Gimsonti's CARMO labels.

The 80's are a transition period from pure acoustic to a mix between acoustic and electric instruments; Gismonti's vocals tend to disapear. Typically, the music becomes less provocative and more polite than earlier Gismonti's work. It is somewhat more civilized and more easy to access. Yet, the music remains highly sophisticated and creative; but with little less (good or bad?) surprise. Lots of these albums are under ECM label.

The 90's are a period where Gismonti's Group was founded. The music move towards more classical style: very polite, distinctive, fluid and elegant. Yet, there is still this amazing creativity, complexity and freshness of all Gismonti's works.
A few movie music albums are part of this period too (Kuarup, Amazonia). They tend to have more electronic effects but they stay into the elegant distinctive spirit of Gismonti's group latest compositions. Most of these albums are under ECM or CARMO labels.

About ESTRIA, it is the very first Gismonti's album of 1969. It has a specific styl; a kind of mix between Bossa Nova and Gismonti'unic style. In this way, it will not trully reveal the full dimension of Gismonti's so complicated art. Yet, it is a rather accessible album, rather more easy to listen than later 70's compositions of the artist. It is another enjoyable album and a must-have for Gismonti's fans, maybe a good introduction for people who do not know him yet, an invitation to look deeper into later 70's Gismonti's master pieces!
Please, check my other reviews of other Gismonti's albums if you wish.

3 out of 5 stars Very early Gismonti.......2003-07-15

Ok fellas, I find this one to be almost unlisteneable to - most of the songs have some very dated arrangements (the album was originally released in 1969) written by Gismonti himself, and the only highlight I can think of is the 'linear' incarnation of 'Salvador', as opposed to the 'shattered' later versions - listening to this version one realizes how much Gismonti has developed as a musician.

And this is exactly the point I am trying to make: some of the songs have a 'bossa nova' feel, being that B.N. was almost dead by then here in Brazil, whereas others show the influence of artists such as The Beatles - only that this mixture isn't as rewarding as it can be in the works of, say, Caetano Veloso.

But why I am comparing Gismonti to Veloso? Simply because most of the songs on this album have lyrics sung by Gismonti himself -and they are just not good, to say the least...

Last but not least: the sound quality is only average - like the album itself.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty Girl Samba!.......2005-08-26

There are many types of samba. There is ethnic samba sounds of Luiz Bonfa, the classical music samba sounds of Baden Powell, The Jazz samba of tom Jobim and the Groovy / psych sounds of Marcos Valle. If you've heard Marcos Valle's Samba 68 and loved it then this album is for you! Brasilia Modern Six's Estreia is a beautiful organ driven samba LP with beautiful vocals by their pretty female singer. Since the liner notes are in Japanease the group lineup shall remain nameless for now. The album also contains some very tight harmonies from the group. Think Spanky and Our gang soft rock with a Walter Wanderly / Brazilian twist.

Songs include I love You (which is credited to Chris White of the Zombies but not the Zombies song of the same name...but still amazing!), lounge versions of light my Fire, Summer rain, say a Little Prayer and those were the days. Great! but what's even better is the Brazillian songs such as Balanco De Crianca, Homem Zero, Roda De Samba.

Is the album worth $30.00? I bought mine at a used record store for way less than that. The tall tale truth is out of the 40+ samba LP/CD's I own I CANNOT live without this one. Lounge/kitch aside This is one hell of an album.
