When Bossa Nova began to incorporate Jazz in its way of expression, a big number of trios and combos happened in the Brazilian scene. Sergio Mendes was one of them with his Bossa Rio Sextet.

Maybe the most important among these trios was Tamba Trio and this is a compilation of their recordings in Brazil, from their golden times, the early 60s.

Tamba Trio was Luiz Eca at the piano (also arranger and vocals), Helcio Milito on drums, and Bebeto Castilho on bass (also sax, flute and vocals).

Though this is an instrumental trio in its excellence, you will listen to beautiful vocal harmonies written by Mr. Eca.

The late Luiz Eca was one of the best arrangers and pianists for Bossa Nova. His recognition was openly expressed by Bill Evans who played live with him in nightclubs of Rio de Janeiro. Also by Michel Legrand who has recorded an album in 2005 all dedicated to Luiz Eca compositions.

This is a serious album if you want something important in your Bossa Nova archives though you can buy some original albums here @Amazon or even a more complete compilation titled 'Tamba Trio Classics'.

Novo Millenium -Tamba Trio.......2007-04-23

This set is Brazillian bossa nova at its finest. I really enjoy listening to the blending of the trio's voices and the soothing rhythms of the bossa nova. Also because this set has so many tracks, you can put it on during a long drive, open the windows, and imgagine being in sunny Brazil as the sun is setting on the beaches of Sao Paulo. I can't wait to buy more of their music.

Some Pretty Good Tunes.......2004-05-07

Like the previous reviewer said, this is a good little showcase of some bossa nova tunes. There really are only 6 songs on this cd but after you get the feel of this cd, you are left wanting more.

The artists are great masters in Brazilian music. Antonio Carlos Jobim does "Girl From Ipanema". I think this is the same as the one on his "Tide" cd. Also here is Sergio Mendes and Brazil 66 with a breezy and romantic classic "Like a Lover", featuring warm vocals, orchestration with a consistent guitar. My favorite song is Edu Lobo's Ponteio. It's light and fun, good guitar, quick and festive vocals. Paul Desmond's version of "Dolphin" is a nice, slower track on the piano. But you'll want to check out Stan Getz version too. And finally, Milton Nascimento comes in with one of his neat vocal tracks to wind up the sampler.

This is a terrific little sampler of music. But I must say I paid about a third of the cost posted here. And remember, it's only 6 tunes so chances are if you're deciding between this and something like "Antonio Carlos Jobim's songbook", then check that out instead.

Little Bossa Nova Showcase for a Good Price.......2000-07-09

Just 6 pieces of great Bossa Nova releases by A&M. It's worth the price. Each track comes from a different Bossa Nova master: Antonio Carlos Jobim, Sergio Mendes, Luiz Eça's Tamba Trio/Tamba 4 and Brazilian composers Milton Nascimento and Edu Lobo - all at their best. Paul Desmond also plays 1 track from his A&M album with Brazilian musicians - a Nascimento's composition.
