This dashing and intelligent tribute to Walt Whitman's poetry as art song puts commitment to artistry at center stage. With uncommon sensitivity and magnificent voice, Thomas Hampson lovingly interprets 22 songs by various composers, successfully capturing the emotional range of the American bard's verse by delicately caressing the poetry and, alternately, igniting its every nuance. These song settings enhance the innate music in Whitman's poems, giving them passionate expression in another dimension. Craig Rutenberg's stellar accompaniment is a lesson in effective collaboration. Hampson's interspersing of four poetry readings is below this recording's interpretive caliber, but it's a nice touch. Non-Whitman-heads may find the entire recording a bore, though. - -Barbara Eisner Bayer

4 out of 5 stars A labor of love, but the songs aren't first rate.......2006-12-31

As a concept album, Hampson's 1997 tribute to Walt Whitman earned critical praise for its sensitivity and musicality. There's no doubt that the singer is in rare form here--it would be hard to imagine any of this repertoire better sung. He isn't a good reciter of poetry in the four spoken tracks. The major drawback, however, is that none of these songs are close to being masterpieces, and quite a few are decidedly minor. The avid listener can cncentrate on the poetry instead of the music, I suppose--Hampson's enunciation is crystal clear--but after six or seven items couched in the same rather timid Anglo-American art song form, this lavor of love becomes rather taxing as a listening experience. Taken a few at a time, however, these are intriguing choices that combine into a unqiue recital.

Am looking for the bugle calls commonly used when raising the flag and lowering it. Specifically, I am looking for "To the Colors" and "Retreat" in bugle calls. Do you have it?

5 out of 5 stars The Queen of Sheba.......2006-06-01

On, "One Ethiopia", Gigi blends traditional Ethiopian melodies with the rhythms of West African and Afro-Caribbean sounds. This album, unlike her two most recent, "Gigi" and "Gold and Wax", was produced by Ethiopian people. Bill Laswell, regardless if he is good or not,is a far cry from being African in any sense, which shows in his interpretation of what African music is. His mission to dilute the music of cultures so that it appeals to European and Euro-American sensibilities fortunately missed Gigi in this early album of hers. This isn't to say that there aren't western additions to this album, there are, but it's done while retaining alot of its cultural independence. Perhaps the Queen of Sheba is still with us, just as beautifully "black and comely."

      5 out of 5 stars Auditory Bliss!.......2006-04-14

I was very happy to find this album on iTunes a while back, as its nigh impossible to get a copy of it anywhere. The album, an early effort of the critically acclaimed Gigi, is a good one. It showcases her vocal talents which glitter like treasure gold in a deep dimply lit and electronically created dancehall. Her sophisticated and stylish singing paints notes onto straightforward african dance beats in a very ear-pleasing way.

      5 out of 5 stars Information.......2005-05-10

I want general information, from ethiopia and world.

      4 out of 5 stars A sleeper (that's a compliment . . . .).......2005-04-20

In a way I prefer this recording to Gigi's later stuff. There's an honesty and directness about the music here that doesn't try to force itself into a "world" music attitude - something which can (sometimes)produce a diluted musical message. This music on this recording is computer-based as opposed to live drums & bass, etc. It's very tastefully done for this kind of thing, but I would have rated this record 5 stars if it had been cut by a real group, because the actual music (and Gigi's singing in particular) is fantastic!

5 out of 5 stars The voice of an angel.......2001-12-28

      The voice of an angel

After coming in late from work, I had dosed off without turning off the radio. Hours later, I was awakened by an angel's voice that I had heard before. To my disbelief, it was my hometown girl Gigi from Ethiopia. This was the first time I had heard an Ethiopian sing on national public radio and, naturally, I was a bit shocked. Her interview was great; she had the charisma of a superstar and the confidence of a national leader. She is one of the most influential musicians to come from Ethiopia. As you all know, Ethiopian modern music is still stuck in the sixties, but, thankfully, Gigi's music finally caught up with the rest of the world. I can proudly tell my ferngi friends that there is this great music from Ethiopia and Gigi is to thank. If you have not heard her album, I highly recommend giving it a try.
