Nice again to have this reissued, 2nd time on CD!

The incredible composer/musician Eduardo Lobíssimo em parceiro com *O Bruxo* , Hermetão Pascoal , this is one of those recordings that is called "Necessary item" for any entusiast of Brasilian musics!

This recording features Edu at his most primal, and true to his nordestino origins, and no other producer but Hermeto for this legendary session. Many Edu Lobo recordings are lush with orchestration, and complex arrangements, here Edulobiana dictates more "earthy" and "organic" sounds, as the cliché terms are usually not my choice, they fit to describe this time, sorry!

The famous compositions "Casa Forte" and "Zanzibar" are centerpiece, these songs have been covered so many times by other artistas in loving tribute, both in Brasil and around the world.(The great USA funk/soul group Earth, Wind and Fire even made cover of "Zanzibar" on the "Keep Your Head to the Sky" recording! )

Too many words would spoil the surprise once you listen to the sounds! Hermeto stamps this recording with his usual genius, assisting his musical soul and good humor to every pore of this recording (the "organic " theme continues, HAHA!).

Wonderful old songs from the 70s and later. Mellow but powerful singing. A must for any Brazilian music collection

Rich Brazilian Bossa/Jazz/Funk.......2002-10-05

Great collection of beautiful songs arranged with so much interesting percussion, electric piano, and acoustic guitar that you could listen to this all day and never hear everything built into these tracks. Great vocals too but these are always balanced just right with the orchestra. This is probably the best album of dozens I have bought this year. If you like this you may also like Astrud Gilberto's "Gilberto with Turrentine". I wish I could find more music like this.

Edu Lobo: A Genius.......2001-09-11

If you are shopping for light bossa Jobim style, this is not the album you want. On the other hand, if you have ever dug Egberto Gismonti, Gil Evans, Milton...meaning, something different,innovative, a little dissonance, you must get this album. Hermeto Pascoal's intervention is also amazing

An Exotic Adventure!.......2001-08-11

I have just recently started getting into Brazilian music, and this album is one of the resaons why. The pulsating beats, exotic rhythms and flowing melodies are something to behold here. All of the tracks are great, but my favorites were "Zanzibar", "Crystal Illusion" (a very trance-like song), "Casa Forte" and "Jangada". Even Lobo's version of "Hey Jude" is engaging. If I wanted to turn someone on to Brazilian music, I would start with this album. It's that good.

My introduction to Edu Lobo..........2000-06-19

I enjoyed this CD very much--after I gave myself time to get used to Edu Lobo's style, which I was not familiar with prior to this album.

Of course, for years I heard his songs performed by other musicians, but never by Edu himself. This made quite a difference, but by the third time through, I was enjoying what I heard, very much.

My favorites are "Zanzibar", "Crystal Illusions", and "Casa Forte".

Edu sings with conviction, passion, and style. After this album, I won't hesitate to listen to more of him!

A beautiful pre-tropicalia Brazilian pop gem.......2004-06-18

An absolutely gorgeous Brazilian pop album from the mid-1960s, which pairs budding Carioca composer Edu Lobo with the young Maria Bethania, future diva supreme. He provides the arrangements and backing band, they each take turns singing lead vocals and duet on several songs. Even in 1966, Bethania's voice was fully formed: husky, authoritative, and instantly recognizable. Lobo's later work would be more experimental, but this catches him early on, so his bossa nova compositions retain beautiful, crystalline simplicity. One of the jewels in the Elenco label collection... highly recommended!

Album Description

Edu Lobo was one of the leaders of Brazil's Tropicalia movement along with the immortal Jorge Ben, songwriter and singer of distinction, composing both music of startling innovation AND songs which became worldwide standards, following the template laid down by Ben. By 1970 it had become expedient for Lobo and his wife, Wanda de Sah, to leave Brazil and seek refuge in the US where they took part in assorted jazz recordings and their friend Sergio Mendes produced Lobo's first album released outside Brazil for the amazing A&M label!

Sheer beauty.......2003-12-01

If that old cliche "a match made in Heaven" didn't exist, it would have to be created to describe this album, as it unites two of Brazil's greatest melodists ever. The generation that came right after Bossa Nova produced no few masters of melody, such as Marcos Valle, Dori Caymmi and Francis Hime; but, much as I dislike absolutes, Edu Lobo is to me the finest of the lot, and the one who comes closest to Jobim (of whom nothing need be said) in range, sophistication and just plain beauty. Small wonder that Vinicius de Moraes, who, together with Jobim and Joao Gilberto, defined Bossa Nova, was also Edu's frequent partner - two of the songs in this album are by Edu and Vinicius. Small wonder that one of those, Canto Triste, was recorded, with English lyrics of her own which Vinicius himself regarded as the best versions ever of his original words, by Lani Hall, the US singer who had the (here I go absolutizing again) most perfect feeling for Brazilian music, who also recorded (and wrote the English lyrics for) another of this CD's selections, Pra Dizer Adeus. And no wonder at all that Tom and Edu blend so perfectly in every aspect: listeners who are not familiar with the songs may be hard pressed to guess which song is by whom. Edu sings Tom's Chovendo na Roseira as if he had written it, Tom joins in in Edu's uptempo Vento Bravo (with *both* playing piano) as if it had come out of his Matita Pere album. The selections? Gem after gem. If you have an ear for beauty, don't miss this one.

This "Album of Theatre" is the result of the collaboration of two of the best contemporary post Bossa Nova composers: Edu Lobo and Chico Buarque de Holanda. The songs are vaguely interrelated like dramatic sketches and illustrate the ability of musicians in Brazil to walk on popular and erudite ground with equal ease. There are some genuine masterpieces in the collection,a must for lovers of Brazilian music!

Among the best in Brazilian music..........1999-08-31

C. Buarque & E. Lobo are amongst the best composers Brazil has seen in the last 30 years or so. This album is a compilation of the most wonderful, memorable recordings of their songs by other great names in Brazil, including Gilberto Gil, Ney Matogrosso, Milton Nascimento, and Ivan Lins. Also, the album shows a careful production, from the quality of its musicians to the designing of the album itself.

An album to be listened to carefully by those who enjoy Brazilian music.

Anyway, a good compilation without a doubt; it includes a very good treat; a duet with Brazlian singer Joyce on: "Rei Morto, Rei Posto"; check it out..............
