The singing of angels.......2005-12-20

Las Rubias del Norte of Brooklyn make wonderful music that takes the listener on a pleasant journey through past popular styles that our grandparents would surely recognize, all the while making it new through the unforced, unfiltered purity of the delivery of lead vocalists Allysa Lamb and Emily Hurst. These two weave pure magic from their hoary catalogue of ancient rumbas, Cuban pop hits, and dusty old cowboy tunes. Against lithe arrangements from the band their light pure sopranos twine and trill like spilled silver. This is their first record, self produced, but it doesn't sound like it. They've obviously been paying their dues and honing their very special sound and songbook. The only reason for the lack of a fifth star is the relative brevity of this recording clocking in at around 30 or so minutes, that and that one of the tracks unwisely turns the vocal over to one of the guys in the band. An upcoming release is soon to follow as they show signs of outgrowing the tiny Brooklyn bar where they have been a fixture. They've got a lot of great old songs up their sleeves and the band supports our two angels superbly. Watch 'em. They're gonna make it!

An Overly-Ambitious Experimental Blend.......2003-12-09

Like Kruder & Dorfmeister, Sofa Surfers are from Vienna, Austria. The European vibe can be felt in `Transit's every track, whether it's the accent of the sporadic mc, like on `Walking Ghosts', or the continuous down-tempo grooves, subtle and classy and rare in the US (Sasha & Digweed come close, as well as Aphex Twin, at his least aggressive and most lyrical). Despite evident comparisons, Sofa Surfers are smart enough to, while sustaining the K&D element, stray away from it and delve into their own harmonious `testings'. On `Transit' it works to a certain degree - the band's skill is palpable, but they lack focus, consistence and confidence. Which is forgivable. They were newcomers, after all.
It is the kind of album that would appeal to jazz-lovers, electronic geeks, stoners and those who strive for musical variety. THAT `Transit' has a barrel-full of, yet, while appealing, it sounds unfinished, or inadequately assembled. Take the opening track, `Bon Voyage', the album's highlight. Slow and methodical at the start, it astonishes with an abrupt tirade of precise drum-n-bass that is unexpectedly bracing. The problem is, the next three tracks after that make the listener long for the `bombshell' that `Bon Voyage' had hidden for them - unfortunately, they don't.
Which is not to say they're not dexterously produced. A little bit of saxophone; a fragment of African drums; rich, dexterous layers of understated beats over stretched uncanny melodies generate positive reception, predominantly on `Monoscopolis', `Tse Tse Fly' (which has otherworldly vocals over a plausibly dawdling drumming hum) and `Lada Taiga'.
K&D create definitive chill-out albums. They accentuate the fine power of music to express more than words ever can. Their devious, velvety rhythms have already propelled them to stardom - their sound is recognizable, it's distinct. Sofa Surfer`s "Transit' is NOT distinct, yet introduces a skillful new promising band to the European world of refined down-tempo grooves.

Nice, trippy european based sound with all kinds of arrangements - from reggae to classic downbeat techno. Sofa surfers are showing that they are mature band. Very similar to Spacer, Juryman....

amazing powerbook improv.......2000-12-10

Three of avant music's brightest lights (the Mego label's Peter Rehberg and Christian Fennesz, and the ubiquitous Jim O'Rourke) sit down with their laptops, and create a disarming and beautiful collection of electronic free improvisation. You'll find only trace elements of established genres here, as the three lob samples and tones back and forth: recognizible instruments blend with "pure" electronics, pop structures dissolve into the irradiation of noise and static. The fact that it's all done in real time, with little to no premeditation, makes it all the more intriguing. This _isn't_ techno, despite what the racking system might tell you. Whatever the old farts of free improv tell you, this _is_ the future of avant garde, improvised music. Let whatever hang ups you have about music created on computer go, and lose yourself in the journey.

Seriously addictive..........2004-10-08

For Tosca fans hooked on their excellent "Dehli 9" and "Suzuki" albums, "Chocolate Elvis" comes a pretty close third. Superficially an 11 track remix of the same song, it's much broader and much more interesting than its track listing suggests. With most of the remixes being so different that they stand as totally different tracks, and with several managing to raise a smile on the way, the album flows from start to finish and after a couple of plays starts to etch its way into the memory's "groove-banks" in typical Richard Dorfmeister style. As always, brilliantly produced and seriously addictive.

Lovely Album!!!.......2005-11-01

The selections here are all gems--miniature aural works of art that would bring any one to the heights of ecstasy. The pieces bring to mind all the great composers and spectral echoes of Schubert ,Mozart other greats resound in my ears. The performers are all excellent and are played on the folk intruments indigenous to that area.The instruments are:zither, hackle, folk hammered dulcimer,folk harp,alpine xylophone and guitar.
Please buy this cd as a moving rememberance to a folk style fast dissapearing because of globalizarion.
