5 out of 5 stars Obscure rock.......2007-01-15

A talent like Jennifer Warnes should not be so obscure now. Her stuff is great and familiar once you hear it. Extremely Hard to find CD but Amazon had it.

5 out of 5 stars To Dream of Angels.......2007-01-11

Jennifer Warnes voice is what I always dreamed angels must sound like. I'm sure I'm right. In fact, I know I'm right. How many times has her music made my day over the last twenty or so years of listening to it. So many times. I invite ANYONE who has a sensitive heart to listen to this music. It is HEART FOOD of the highest order. I challenge anyone to listen to songs like "I'm Restless" or "I'm Dreaming" and not be moved. I'm currently looking for the world Jennifer sings about in her wonderful music. As soon as I find it I'm gonna live there.

5 out of 5 stars Her pop-country music 1976 to 1982.......2005-02-21

Jennifer's career has been varied to say the least. I suspect that she is, at heart, a folkie, but she has scored major international pop hits with a couple of movie themes (Up where we belong, I've had the time of my life) both of which were duets that became top ten hits in Britain and topped the American charts. In between those two hits, Jennifer recorded an excellent Leonard Cohen tribute (Famous blue raincoat). All those recordings are outside the scope of this collection, which focuses on her recordings for Arista between 1976 and 1982.

The tracks here include Jennifer's breakthrough hit, Right time of the night, which was an American top ten pop hit and also topped the country charts. I know a heartache when I see one, another excellent song, also made a big impact in America. Jennifer demonstrated her songwriting ability by contributing two songs here (I'm restless, Shot through the heart) but also showed her ability to interpret a classic - Run to her (a gender-adapted update of Bobby Vee's Run to him). Elsewhere, It goes like it goes (from the movie Norma Rae), When the feeling comes around, Could it be love, I'm dreaming and Come to me are all brilliant.

A career-spanning retrospective is available on the Raven label, so you may prefer to buy that but it contains many different musical styles so it won't appeal to everybody. The tracks on this album sit together comfortably. The overall style is pop with a country flavor. If you enjoy listening to the Carpenters, you will probably enjoy this album.

4 out of 5 stars Not Her Very Best - But Still Very Good.......2004-12-17

Like other reviewers, I agree this CD is not the sum of Jennifer Warnes' total greatest hits. When Arista released it in 1982, it reflected her best work up 'til then. Nonetheless, it's still a great CD.

A number of her songs, while very pop-oriented, seem to have bits of the Southern California country rock genre that was best exemplified by the Eagles. You can certainly hear it in "Right Time Of The Night".

Whether intentional or not, the songs on this CD seem to reflect the feeling of unrequited love and yet they never reach the heart-sick sappiness of that type of music.

Her most well-known song on this CD is "Right Time Of The Night" but to me, her best song is "I'm Dreaming", a minor hit that saw some airplay in the late 1970's. This song captures the some-times wistful feelings of her songs.

If you like Jennifer Warnes and/or light pop-rock, this is definitely the CD for you.

3 out of 5 stars Good, not great..........2003-01-12

"The Best of Jennifer Warnes" was released in 1982 on Arista Records, before Warnes' #1 duets "Up Where We Belong" and "(I've Had) The Time of My Life" burned up the American pop charts and became classics. Of course, this album was also compiled before Warnes' best album (1986's "Famous Blue Raincoat") was released. Therefore, this CD is really only a "best of" representing her earlier career.

Warnes' two Top 20 solo hits from the '70s ("I Know A Heartache When I See One" and "Right Time of the Night") are here. But the rest of the material is probably nothing most listeners would recognize from the radio, with the possible exception of Warnes' modestly selling remake of Juice Newton's "Come To Me," which was the single from this album.

Jennifer Warnes sounds great. I mean, what a voice! But this CD contains only ten songs, none of which are remastered...so it leaves something to be desired as far as an overall view of her hit-making career.

While this is a good CD...I mean, it *IS* Jennifer Warnes, there is a better (albeit still incomplete) Jennifer Warnes compilation available called "First We'll Take Manhattan", so I recommend that one. But for casual fans of '70s music, this CD should fit the bill.

Album Description

1970 album from Columbia by the great blues/rock guitarist Winter with Rick Derringer, Randy Hobbs & Randy Z. Contains all 11 original tracks including the hit 'Rock & Roll, Hoochie Koo', & the original cover art. For over 30 years, Johnny Winter has been a guitar hero without equal. Signing to Columbia records in 1969, Johnny immediately laid out the blueprint for his fresh take on classic blues a prime combination for the legions of fans just discovering the blues via the likes of Jimmy Page and Eric Clapton. Constantly shifting between simple country blues in the vein of Robert Johnson, to all-out electric slide guitar blues-rock, - Johnny has always been one of the most respected singers and guitar players in rock and the clear link between British blues-rock and American Southern rock (a la the Allman Brothers and Lynyrd Skynyrd.) Throughout the '70s and '80s, Johnny was the unofficial torch-bearer for the blues, championing and aiding the careers of his idols like Muddy Waters and John Lee Hooker. Sony.

3 out of 5 stars Guess I'll Go Away.......2007-05-09

Just spent an afternoon surfing Winter Websites, & I'm surprised that no-one mentions 'Guess I'll Go Away'; the opening track that for me led to an interest in Johnny for years to come. I Mean 'R&R Hootchie Koo' & all are fine, but as a 13 year old guitar freak, hearing that for the 1st time really opened my mind. (I don't just mean the 'flanging', I'm still not sure of the time signature in this) A shame he didn't do much more in this vein. This album & 'Still Alive & Well', still do it for me, and are among my all time faves, but non of them are free of 'filler'..

5 out of 5 stars Winter sets the standard for classic guitar ballad.......2007-04-19

The album JOHNNY WINTER AND provides guitar purists with one of rock's great guitar ballads, LET THE MUSIC PLAY. From the moment the first Am is strummed, the guitar player knows this song is a serious attempt at classic rock guitar.
Winter and fellow guitarist, former McCoy's guitarist, Rick Derringer take the listener into a soulful journey of guitar playing that actually over power the lyrics of the song. From the first hard hitting lick of the lead intro, LET THE MUSIC PLAY definately puts Winter into the league of other great rock guitarists, leaving the throne of the white blues guitarist and claiming his place in the 'hallso of great rock guitar' with all the drama and imagery we guitarists so love from this genera. The rest of the album is great, but LET THE MUSIC PLAY will always be one of my top ten guitar ballads. If for nothing else, buy this CD for this song. I assure you, the rest of the album won't dissapoint.

5 out of 5 stars Johhny Winter And review.......2007-04-07

this is a great old record,...the songs are well written.theres some good playing by all concerned.it also features Rick Derringers brother on drums, who was listed as Randy "Z" for whatever reason.(???) overall, for those who remember when this came out(1970) its really great to re-visit these songs once more on cd.
now all we need is for Rick to re-release 'good dirty fun' again on cd and the edgar winter group (blue cover with the crazy 'light tube lp)) and also the live lp of Johnny and edgar..that was a good one too....

5 out of 5 stars johnny winter-johnny winter and.......2007-03-30

A tough one to find. I got lucky. The first meshing of two emerging forces(Winter and Derringer). A whole lotta' skakin' goin' on!

5 out of 5 stars perfect blend of blues and rock and roll.......2007-02-08

A truly forgotten classic, the best recording by either Johnny Winter and Rick Derringer, no small claim since they both did excellent work on their own and with others. Together here for the first time, their combination of sizzling blues guitar and rock and roll chops meshed perfectly. Winter's leads and especially his slide playing throughout this recording are top notch, and Derringer's interplay with him is inspired as well.
The songs are strong, with Derringer contributing four excellent tunes including his "rock and roll hoochie coo", which he would record on his own and score a big hit just a few years later. I prefer the version on this album. "on the limb" is a fine rocker with slick slide work from Winter and alternating lead vocals from Derringer and Winter.
Winter's compositions are great also, especially "prodigal son" which has one of the greatest guitar solos I've ever heard. Johnny's vocals are soulful and strong throughout the album, his singing on "nothing left" is especially emotive.
The covers chosen here are fantastic, including a killer version of one of my favorite songs, "no time to live" from Traffic's 2nd LP. "let the music play" by Allan Nicholls and Otis Stephens is a standout track also.
Derringer's brother Randy contributes one song, "am I here?" which has a fresh approach and arrangement which contributes to the variety of the recording.
This band would record a great live LP and then split up, but for this short time they were among the best, and this is one of the finest LP's released in 1970. I have not heard any CD version of this, as I am still listening to my original vinyl which is smoking hot. If you appreciate late sixties British blues ala Clapton,Page,Green,Simmonds,Alvin Lee,etc. and Hendrix,ZZ Top,Allman Bros.,Skynnyrd, you will certainly love this.

4 out of 5 stars Suffers only by comparison to "D2K".......2006-08-24

It can be said that Eddie Izzard burning at half-light is still brighter than most comedians working today. Monsieur Izzard is admittedly more distracted now, with film work coming first and standup comedy as second priority, but what comes through loud and clear here is the continued workings of a brilliant comedic mind. Sure, it's not "Dress To Kill" (D2K), but it is worth the price of admission for the dedicated Izzardite.

There were two releases of the "Sexie" show, this audio-only version and a DVD release, with this being the better and more lively of the two. It was recorded in Brighton, a town known for its understated wildness going back several generations, and the energy is contagious. The DVD, available for British regions only, was recorded at a performance in Eastbourne which is essentially a retirement community - that was a mistake. The audience has no energy, and more than a little confusion and fear, with Eddie having to make up the difference all by himself. Not fun to watch. There's an extra feature on that package, though, of Eddie with his dad, which is touching as well as funny and worth seeing once if you get the chance.

If you use "Dress To Kill" as the yardstick by which to measure Eddie's more recent work, you're going to be disappointed no matter what he does. In the process of doing so, you will miss some entertaining and funny stuff.

4 out of 5 stars Not "Dressed To Kill," but what could be?.......2006-07-28

The "Sexie" tour followed on the heels (no pun intended) of Eddie's outstanding "Dressed To Kill" production. After hundreds of plays on HBO, and the release of the DVD, "Dressed To Kill" raised audience expectations for "Sexie" to a completely unrealistic level.

At the "Sexie" performance I attended, audience members relentlessly screamed "Cake or death!" and "Do you have a flag?" at Eddie - like Led Zeppelin fans pleading for "Stairway" from Jimmy Page. Eddie finally had to stop and remind the audience that THIS is a different show. Indeed. It stands as a completely unique entity as do all of his previous shows. This isn't his funniest work. It's not "Dress To Kill," and to be absolutely fair, what could be? "Dressed To Kill" is lightening in a bottle. "Sexie," however is every bit as hilarious as his earlier work on "Circle" and "Glorious."

That isn't to say that "Sexie" isn't funny. It IS funny! Very funny. Eddie put together some wonderfully twisted views on history, Greek mythology, guide dogs using commando hand signs to get their charge across a busy street, ponders why there isn't a "Sharky" equivalent to "Flipper," and he imagines Christopher Walken performing "Hamlet." "Sexie" deserves a place in anyone's Izzard collection.

I DO wonder why the "Sexie" DVD hasn't been released in the U.S. Gee, perhaps some studio executives think that the self-proclaimed "Executive Transvestite" in full drag was a bit much for American audiences? Oh get over it! Give America "Sexie" on DVD. The exposition on silicone breast enhancements bursting while at flight altitude on an airplane needs to be SEEN to be truly appreciated. Eddie is a visual comedian. His body language and facial expressions are half the fun.

In the meantime, this two CD collection will have to serve as the memory of the "Sexie" tour - unless you choose to purchase the U.K. DVD and play 'region switching' with your DVD drive (which I did, and my "Sexie" DVD is personally signed by Eddie. Nah-Nyah. ;-) It's a good thing to visit his web site and sign up for the newsletter.)

2 out of 5 stars Not his best.......2006-03-18

This is not one of his best shows. A little draggy (excuse that), unfocused, and just really not as good as some of the
others. I wanted to get the DVD, and we got half way to 3/4 of the way through it and went and did other things. If you're an Eddie Izzard fan, it's a must have. If this is you're first time, do "Dressed to Kill".

4 out of 5 stars Very good show.......2005-10-21

I own the UK version of this DVD and can highly recommend it. Although not as good as 'Dress to Kill', Eddie still gives a strong performance with plenty of humour and laughter. The extra of him and his Dad touring his Father and Grand-Fathers old houses is very interesting and quite charming. A very good buy in my oponion.

5 out of 5 stars Eddie is one of a kind..........2005-08-12

No one else can even compare to the comedy of Eddie Izzard. He is truly the best there is. Everything he does exceeds all other comedians. I have all of his DVD's and CD's...you cannot go wrong here!

One of the more creative, successful tribute albums, A Vision Shared was originally released to coincide with a PBS program that premiered in 1988. Packing some serious heavyweights onto one CD, the record features covers of Guthrie and Leadbelly tunes by, among others, Little Richard, Brian Wilson, Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Sweet Honey in the Rock, and U2. The 14 tracks consist of mostly well known tunes, and it's fascinating to hear what the artists have done to them. Particularly exciting is a supercharged version of Leadbelly's "Rock Island Line" by Little Richard with Fishbone and U2's take on Guthrie's "Jesus Christ." --Ian Landau

4 out of 5 stars Good Compiliation.......2006-01-09

I enjoy all the cuts on this compilation. It is fun to hear the variety of artists perform their works. A rockin' version of Rock Island line from Little Richard that is worth the whole album. Funny how the Bourgeois Blues still seems relevant.........

5 out of 5 stars LITTLE RICHARD WITH FISHBONE STANDS OUT.......2005-08-20

IF YOU LIKE PURE, OLD SCHOOL ROCK 'N' ROLL, PICK UP THIS ALBUM FOR LITTLE RICHARD'S AWESOME RECORDING OF 'ROCK ISLAND LINE'. IN MY OPINION, IT IS THE TRACK THAT STANDS OUT MORE THAN ANY OTHERS. IF YOU DON'T APPRECIATE THAT GENRE, YOU MAY NOT APPRECIATE THAT TRACK AS MUCH. I ZEROED IN ON THE ALBUM MAINLY FOR LITTLE RICHARD'S TRACK, ALTHOUGH THE REST ARE FINE.

5 out of 5 stars tried and true.......2004-10-10

I must have bought this on cassette back in the late eighties out of a bargain bin, a bargain bin! It would hve been a bargain at full price. I played the cassette to death and now I've bought the CD.

Almost every song has life to it, not one a simple re-singing. Sweet Honey in the Rock's "Sylvie" still gives me pause after all these years. Lovely. The U2, the Emmylou Harris and the Springsteen also rank high and I'm not a rabid fan of any of those people.

The album is a wonderful pairing of musicians with timeless work of two masters. I have MANY CD's but I only keep a handful next to the player at all times and this is one of them.

4 out of 5 stars Brian Wilson's version of Goonight Irene is amazing!.......2004-07-21

Brian Wilson really made that song his own. It sounds like a song he wrote it, and stands out from others on this album. It shows what a fine arranger he is. The primitive drums and synthesizers on that track reminds me of The Beach Boys Love You album.

5 out of 5 stars The must have SACD!.......2006-02-09

Without a doubt, this is the quisessential SACD for all SACD lovers. The sound on this disc is mindblowing and the warmth and clarity of the recording is flawless in all aspects. The discrete 5.1 surround mixing is done very tastefully and it's almost like being right there in the recording studio with all the instruments/vocals surrounding you in sheer bliss. All tracks on this SACD are brilliant and I think Ken did a great job in picking these selections from the magnificient Telarc/Heads Up SACD range. What's more, Ken gives you detailed info on the surround recording of each track telling you which instrument goes into which channel and the highlights to look out for in each track too. Check out the track from Ladysmith black mamboza, and also the spyro gyra and yellowjackets tracks. To sum it up, this is the only SACD you'll ever need if you want to show off your 5.1 surround SACD system. Well done sound & vision!

5 out of 5 stars One of the greatest musical groups ever!.......2006-08-26

I just recently discovered Brasil '66 when I heard "Pretty World" on a jazzy oldies type station. I knew instantly that the singer was someone special & a master singer. Now I'm listening to many of their songs and I never get tired of them. Their music is just pure, clean, good, real music! It is free from technical gimmicks or anything heavy or unnecessary. Their music is so happy, innocent, and fun. I LOVE IT. I can't get enough of it! They're definitely my favorite right now. The best thing about Brasil '66 is Lani Hall. What a great singer she is. Also the jazzy bossanova instrumentals are refreshingly different from anything I've listened to before. I'm looking forward to getting better hi-fi equipment so I can hear them in all their glory. I bet they sound really great on a tube stereo system.

5 out of 5 stars Love this CD!.......2006-08-08

I listen to this CD when I go for my evening walks. It's wonderful music to walk to (and dance to!). I am absolutely crazy about Sergio Mendes & Brazil 66!. My favorite song on this CD is "Sometimes In Winter." It's a beautiful, haunting song. All the songs are great, but that is the best.

    5 out of 5 stars The K-Man was right........2002-04-25

This CD is a timeless, time-capsule treasure trove of pure pop pleasure. Sergio Mendes is a bossa nova Bacharach - not just because he covered both types of music, but because he shares whith the American an interest in revivifying the aesthetic of Tin Pan Alley, tempering it with a 60s pop melancholy (both especially cherish the inherent sadness of brass), and, in Mendes' case, cooling it with jazz discipline gleaned from his association with Jobim. The half century of melodic miracles on this CD may be divided into three types:

    1. Cover versions of pop standards so annoyingly familiar you never want to hear the originals again. Mendes takes songs by the likes of the Beatles, Bacharach, Jimmy Webb and Simon & Garfunkel, re-arranges and re-imagines them in a samba mode, convincing you that they were originally written in Brazil after all. 'The Fool On The Hill' nearly collapses under its visionary excess; 'Day Tripper' becomes alive through slick jazz rhythms; 'What The World Needs Now' throttles at a frightening pace; 'Cheslea Morning' and 'Night and Day' exude sunny Rio rays; 'Norwegian Wood' brings out the yo-yo intensity buried in the original.

    2. Arrangements of bossa nova classics by Mendes' old jamming cohorts. These are less radical than the above, and the attempts by anonymous, if proficient, session singers to replicate the idiosyncratic Astrud/Joao vibe don't always work; but the subtle reworkings offer new takes on old favourites - 'Bim Bom' is especially definitive, Mendes mining the wistfulness in the most frivolous of songs, sensing the music's soul in the piano. 'One Note Samba', which segues here into 'Spanish Fly', shouln't work, and doesn't, but is invigorating nonetheless.

    3. Less familiar covers and original songs (written by Mendes and friends), which rarely equal the emotional depth of Jobim or Bonfa, but offer groovy bliss, warm generosity, bouyant fun and reflective sorrow in equal measures. 'Sometimes In Winter' is a pretentious epic with the most glorious melodic bridge; 'Pretty World' is one of the few songs that knows what being rapturously in love actually sounds like; 'Cancao Do Nosso Amor' and 'Pradizer Adeus' know the same despondancy that provoked Jobim's 'Insensatez'.

This division is, of course, arbitrary and artificial - unique production, settings and instrumentation mean each and every song sounds like a Mendes original. Cosmo Kramer was right - some people can still go wild for Sergio Mendes.

    5 out of 5 stars Outstanding CD!.......2006-08-14

This is a great collection of songs and very uplifting and inspirational. All of the songs are beautifully written and sung by Brooke Fraser. I listen to it over and over again. If you want to hear something fresh and inspiring, have a listen to this one. It's a must have.

5 out of 5 stars Great Find... a Pleasant surprise.......2006-02-27

I had $8 NZ left at the airport when leaving Christchurch, NZ this January. There was a table of CD's, priced at $8.00 So, I asked for a NZ artist and the clerk suggested this album, What to Do with Daylight.

This was such a pleasant 'find'. I really enjoy Brooke's style, and her music. She has a soulful voice, and seems to pull from many styles. I would classify her work as a bit of Sarah McLaughlin, Louise Goffin and similar.

I like Save the World the best, followed by Lifeline.

    Album Description

Rolf Harris, the Australian renaissance man, remains completely misunderstood. Sure, he scored a massive worldwide hit in the early '60s with 'Tie Me Kangaroo Down, Sport' and yes, he dresses quite silly. And perhaps he is a bit too affable, but the man is talented! He's an excellent painter, he's recorded his own albums as well as being featured on albums by 'cool' people (he played didgeridoo for Kate Bush) and he pretty much invented the stylophone. In essence, Rolf Harris deserves your respect even if he won't demand it himself! This 23 track collection features the best of 30+ years of recordings starting with 'Tie Me Kangaroo Down, Sport' up through his cover of Zeppelin's 'Stairway To Heaven'. You can't go wrong with a song called 'Nick Teen & Al K. Hall'. EMI.

    5 out of 5 stars Nostalgic memories.......2007-01-09

What wonderful memories this great digitally remastered CD brought back to me. My old LP's/ "records" and awesome & funny talent of Rolf Harris' music. What do kids get when they're 3-5 nowdays that's anything like this?

4 out of 5 stars Aussie party music.......2006-08-20

I had an Aussie yard party and used the CD for a sing-a-long. It worked out great and we had a lot of fun singing with Rolf.
I didn't realize that he had made so many fun songs famous!

4 out of 5 stars It is the Best of Rolf Harris.......2005-08-07

You might be familiar with the songs of Rolf Harris or maybe many years ago you heard the song "Tie Me Kangaroo Down Sport" and that brought you to this CD. Either way you will most certainly enjoy this collection of his songs. I didn't realize how talented he is and how much joy his songs bring until I added this CD to my collection. It brought back a lot of memories. Enjoy.

    5 out of 5 stars Classic Rolf.......2005-07-15

This album is for British expats who grew up listening to Rolf Harris. My only problem is the leaving out of "Two Little Boys", otherwise terrific. I bought this thinking my daughter (currently eight months) would enjoy it one day, but I find myself putting it on in the car on the way to work and singing along to "The Court of King Caractacus" or "Sun Arise". I love the sound of wobble boards in the morning...

5 out of 5 stars The best of a great song writter........2005-05-10

The story goes something like this. Moon Martin was working with Linda Ronstadt's back up band in the early seventies. The band wanted to stay together and go out on their own. Moon Martin decieded not to join them and he went on as a solo song writter and recording artist on his own. Oh yeah, the other players from the Ronstadt Band became- The Eagles.
I'm glad Moon didn't join the Eagles because I would have never heard these great songs. Moon Martin ia usually known (if at all) for writting Robert Palmers hit "Bad Case Of Loving You" and Willie "Mink" DeVille's "Cadallac Walk". Buy this CD and you can hear the original versions.
I first became aware of him when he opened for ROCKPILE at the Ritz Club in NYC in the early 80's. Moon recorded four albums for Capitol Records in the late seventies early eighties. This is a compilation of those four albums. Moon' albums always sound more like professional song demos than finished projects. At first you may think this sounds a little strange, but as time passes you realize that the simplicity of these arrangements make you really appreciate the great writting. There are no blazing guitar or keyboard solos-just simple songs with catchy great lyrics and catchy melodies that you can't get out of your head.
In the late 80s and 90s Moon has had a number of CDs issued in Europe. If you like this Best of CD- search for these other import CD releases. They are all just as good.
