As its title suggests, Mexican director Alejandro González Iñárritu's film revolves around the transcultural difficulties of human communication. But the linguistic dysfunction that drives the film's characters towards causal connection and inevitable tragedy has paradoxically inspired just the opposite on this adventurous musical mélange of a soundtrack. The meditative, often hypnotic fretboard inventions of Iñárritu's previous soundtrack collaborator, Argentine composer Gustavo Santaolalla (a 2005 Oscar winner for Brokeback Mountain), serve as the restless soul of interlocking plots in the film, the final chapter of a fatalistic trilogy that also includes the Santaolalla-scored Amores Perros and 21 Grams.

But on this expanded, double-disc collection, the South American composer's culture-bending film cues (including mastery of indigenous Arab stringed instruments and incorporating field recordings of Moroccan tribal music) also serve as artistic axes, reflective anchor points for a pop collection that's as ambitious and far-ranging as the film itself. While the "music from and inspired by" tag often indicates cynical record company marketing schemes, here it's an invitation to transcultural musical adventure that links Santaolalla's North African musical conjuring with the contemporary styles of Japan (the atmospherics of Ryuichi Sakamoto and Susumu Yolota, Shinichi Osawa's sly Earth, Wind & Fire/Fatboy Slim mashup, the teen pop of Takashi Fujii's "Oh My Juliet") and Tijuana (a generous sampling of effusive Norteño that includes Los Incomparables, Daniel Luna, and Agua Caliente). --Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars Soundtracks make a difference.......2007-05-15

I can strongly say that music caught me more than the film and theme itself. When the movie was over I couldn't wait to buy it :)
Gustavo Santaoallo is a great great artist, also known from Motorcycle Diaries and Brokeback Mountain.
I really love this guy's work.

5 out of 5 stars babel or babble?.......2007-05-03

the descriptive of this cd says the director made a movie of the attempt to communicate. I just want to know: is babel Spanish for babble English?

3 out of 5 stars burn it..........2007-04-24

If you liked the movie Babel chances are your only going to like some songs from the soundtrack. The soundtrack sounds incredibly foreign for a foreign movie. Its a massive collaboration of Spanish, Arabic/Indian/whatever they are tunes. It contains Really crappy American songs tossed in with two main themes, i basically looked at it as slopped together, if you speak 3 different languages than get it, but the whole album was to focused an cultural music, to much of a melting pot for me and a waste of money. for my last note Gustavo Santalolla is talented but has no idea what goes into a soundtrack. Burn it!

4 out of 5 stars Worlds collide--harmoniously.......2007-04-16

I was busy and distracted the first time I listened to this music, and my first impression was Gee, I wish they'd done a better job of editing. (I confess I still feel that way about the bonus CD, but it doesn't matter. Read on.) Three days later, however, I listened again--mindfully--and GOT IT. Disc one perfectly encapsulates Babel's theme: the Global Village's seemingly diverse tribes (be they North African Tuareg or Japanese haute bourgeoisie) are, just under the surface, inextricably linked and what's more--startlingly related. As I paid attention I was captivated by the duh-obvious connections between desert tablas, Tokyo House, and Cumbia. Then fell in love with all three of those arts, none of which I'd been exposed to before seeing the movie (mainly because I'm probably old enough to be your grandmother). Now I want MORE. This CD sent me running to the 'net in search of more Celso Peña (an "overnight" hit at 48, after decades of tune crafting), more Shinichi Osawa remixes, and more Rip Slyme. The latter is a hard-to-describe but way cool Japanese DJ/tech/mod group whose name is a play on Japlish for "lips rhyme." Apart from all that, I'm also cherishing details like the perfect audio portrait of upperclass ennui ("Bibo no Aozora" by Ryuichi Sakamoto; think Phillip Glass in Japanese, but don't let that put you off), and the utterly stark beauty of Moroccan scenery ("Desert Bus Ride" by Gustavo Santaolalla, who wrote Babel's Academy Award-nominated score and whose plaintive oud may haunt you for the rest of your life. FYI, Santaolalla learned to play that traditional instrument specifically for this commission. Wow.) But the last word belongs to Babel's creator and soundtrack producer, Alejandro Gonzalez Iñarritu: "I conceive a film as a symphony: the structure and textures are determined by the silences and spaces between them. During the entire process, I keep listening to and researching music that could be of great inspiration during the development of the script. That way, I can go forward triggering images in my mind, assimilating and filming my scenes by beats and internal rythms... I only hope that when you listen to these CDs that combine the songs of this great internal and external journey, you can also feel the distant winds and the planet caressing your skin as it spins around."
Amen.

Argentina-born, California-based Gustavo Santaolalla helped shape the rock en Español movement by producing Mexican bands Molotov and Café Tacuba , and Colombian singer Juanes. In the late 1990s he made a switch to soundtracks, working on well-received albums for Amores Perros and The Motorcycle Diaries. His instrumental contributions to Ang Lee's tale of two cowboys in love are acoustic guitar-based and, let's face it, a bit on the sonic-wallpaper side.

The vocal tracks, on the other hand, are uniformly lovely, even if the selection of interpreters falls on the predictable side. Linda Ronstadt, Steve Earle, Willie Nelson, and Mary McBride on the soundtrack to a contemporary Western? What a shock! Still, they're all wonderful and Santaolalla wrote at least a couple of classic-sounding country ballads ("A Love That Will Never Grow Old," sung by Emmylou Harris, and "No One's Gonna Love You Like Me," sung by Mary McBride). And don't miss Teddy Thompson and Rufus Wainwright's sweet cover of Roger Miller's 1964 "King of the Road." --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Axe Rufus Wainwright, and it would be 5 stars.......2007-06-13

This album is a mixture of the instrumental theme, which is incredibly beautiful and haunting, and some very solid country songs. I was surprised by how good the other songs were (you still have to like country music, though). There are only two songs that I don't like at all, and those are the two by Rufus Wainwright - one a cover of "King of the Road" (originally by Roger Miller). They are great demonstrations of him at his most nasal and whiny. It sounds like he is a French guy holding his nose and singing too slow. It's too bad, because they are good songs otherwise. I guess if you like him, you're golden; but I can't stand these versions. Fortunately, the rest of the disc is really good.

5 out of 5 stars Yes, it's one of the best albums I own.......2007-06-03

I listened to it over and over and over last year. Such quality all 'round.

5 out of 5 stars Brokeback Mountain.......2007-05-13

The product is what I expected. It arrived on time and in the condition advertised.

3 out of 5 stars A matter of taste..........2007-05-08

I didn't really pay a lot of attention to the music in the film, except for in the most intense of scenes. Perhaps this is why I was so, completely, disappointed with this soundtrack. I felt that if it did even half of what the film did for me it would be a worthy buy. My friends, this soundtrack is shat. It's mostly country and folk, which I am plainly not into. If you like these things then check this out - if not, turn away.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect, just like the movie..........2007-04-21

Argentine filmmaker Walter Salles (Central Station, Behind the Sun chronicles the epic, 8000 mile motorcycle journey of two friends---one of whom is Ernesto "Che" Guevara---in his compelling story of personal, geographic, and political discovery. Composer Gustavo Santaollala, one of the leading figures in Argentine rock and pop (and the producer behind 2003 Latin Grammy Record and Album of the Year winner Juanes) infuses Salles' unusual road movie with a multi-faceted score that draws not only on his country's rich national musical heritage, but on the same restless musical instincts Santaollala brought to his equally haunting music for 21 Grams. As on that score, his primary instrument is again the guitar, though the seductive electric fretwork of the previous film takes a backseat to acoustic stylings that range from indigenous folk-rooted charm to nervous, electronic-backed soundscapes. Further underscoring the score's expansive, post-modern sensibilities are Maria Esther Zapata's saucy take on the tango-novelty "Chipi Chipi," the composer's own retro-energetic "Que Rico El Mambo" and the evocative contemporary ballad, "Al Otro Lado Del Rio," by Jorge Drexler. --Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars Great music to drive by.......2007-06-16

Perfect CD to bring along for a long drive when you want to relax and not let the outside world (traffic etc) bother you. Perfect for the summer or anytime of year. Even if you didn't see the film you would still enjoy this. Also nice for background party music.

5 out of 5 stars The Motorcycle Diaries - Soundtrack.......2007-01-16

I was initially impressed by the number of tracks on the CD, however on further inspection I noticed this was achieved due to the length (or lack thereof) of tracks and an appropriate "Ah Ha!" response was emitted.

To use the old addage "It's not quantity, it's quality" in this case would be an understatement.

The talent of the various artists, variety and complexity of the music, and the authenticity created an imaginitive atmosphere that had me sitting in an Argentinian (or Peruvian) bar drinking organic coffee whilst patting a llama, after a hard day spent on the back of a Norton 500. (You get the idea anyhow).

It is equally enjoyable played loudly enough to share with a city block, so you can hear it while mowing the lawn, or quietly as background music (watching someone else mow your lawn).

An excellent soundtrack, to accompany an excellent film, is money well spent.

5 out of 5 stars Sountrack for South America.......2006-08-14

I just recently went to Peru and Bolivia for a month, and this soundtrack was on my iPod. I'm so happy it was on there.
On the breath-taking bus ride to Machu Picchu, the tourists next to me kept yammering on about shampoo. I turned on this soundtrack to drown them out, and the spiritual experience was salvaged. This is the first time I've every truly felt indebted to a CD.
While some of the music I heard while travelling was truly amazing, at the same time there is only so many times you can hear "El Condor Pasa" before you want to stuff cotton in your ears. This gorgeous soundtrack was a great relief. It takes the traditional sounds of South American music and makes them sound modern. Occasionally minimalist, occasionally wild, but always very polished and haunting. Don't go to South America without it.

5 out of 5 stars Very much Music ! ...melodic and passionate (more below).......2006-04-13

This is indeed a great effort by this very talented composer. The music never gets boring, it's always shifting gears, which it's not surprising , since it is -after all- the original Soundtrack for the equally original movie. At times becomes similar to middle eastern pieces, at others undoubtedly South-American. This is a classic example of what one might call 'evolutionary' music which by no means should be confused with a revolutionary kind. Tune your ear, earn some peace for yourself and if you can use your HEADPHONES for a better effect.

yours truly,

Rene

Gustavo Santaolalla is a talented multi-instrumentalist from Argentina who has been extremely involved in bringing new sounds to an age-old culture. Playing a variety of stringed instruments including the guitar, the guitarron, the charango, and the ronroco, Santaolalla bridges the gap between traditional musics and forward-thinking compositions. He reveals an unusually progressive vision filled with cascades of chiming sounds and the understated influences of Japan, Africa, and Eastern Europe, as well as Latin America. Accompanied by his associate Anibal Kerpel on vibraphone and melodia, Santaolalla has made an instrumental album of intense passion and evocative songwriting. Gustavo's rapid picking and constant strumming of strings provide a solid foundation for his melodic innovations as clusters of notes rise majestically and then quietly fall away. --Mitch Myers

5 out of 5 stars magical south american guitar .......2007-01-10

This heavenly music is subtle and powerful at the same time. It makes you feel light and and slightly melancholic. It evokes the high land of South America.
This musician composed this type of music also for the movie 'motorcycle diaries'. The music has firm roots in the South-American Indian folkmusic.

5 out of 5 stars IF THERE'S AN ALBUM MADE IN HEAVEN, IT'S SURELY RONROCO.......2006-08-29

The title of this review says it all. This album is absolute heaven for one's mind, body and, most importantly soul. It is a heavenly melem for all of your heartaches, soothing your wounds and renewing you from the inside. Gustavo's music is like nothing's Ive ever heard before! Every time I listen to his albums, I listen to them from a new perspective and cannot get bored with one song or the other. It is inspiring in so many ways. I recommend it to everyone who is experiencing life from the inside, inspired by it in its every aspect. THIS ALBUM CHANGES LIVES.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent work.......2006-03-20

I would recommend this CD even if you have gotten the Motorcycle Diaries soundtrack. It contains the tracks that make this work complete, wholesome.

5 out of 5 stars Spread the word........2006-03-10

Like several reviewers, I first heard of Gustavo Santaolalla via Michael Mann's film 'The Outsider' which made expressive use of the track `Iguazu'. This album (from which 'Iguazu' is taken) is an work of stunning beauty. All the tracks are slow, haunting guitar-driven mood pieces composed almost totally in minor keys. I was expecting `Iguazu' to be the highlight but there are many tracks that are equally exquisite. I recommend this album unreservedly to anyone with an ear for a beautiful melody and a romantic soul - believe me, you will not stop playing this. Quite outstanding.

5 out of 5 stars A taste of the Andes.......2006-02-28

I originally bought this CD when it first came out as a result of a review I heard on NPR. Loved it first time but lost it in a move. I was reminded of it when I watched 'The Motorcycle Diaries' a wonderfully evocative memory to Che Guevara's early life before he joined Castro in the Cuban revolution. Santaolalla wrote the soundtrack to the movie, which perfectly matched it, but I wanted to get the original CD once again. Haven't regretted it for a minute. Living in Texas it's good to hear that Armadillos are used for something more useful than just roadkill. That's what Santaolalla uses as the body of his guitar/mandoline type stringed instrument throughout the CD. The whole CD gives a feeling of space, size and airyness. Go buy it. PS he's been nominated for an Oscar for the music for 'Brokeback Mountain' this March. Let's hope that he still manages to produce CDs in their own right in the future.

In 2006, the 25-year-old Venezuelan Gustavo Dudamel's star on the international scene is rising fast, with prestigious conducting assignments and this CD of two of Beethoven's most-popular and often-recorded symphonies. It's a bold calling card for a label that has outstanding versions of these symphonies by the likes of von Karajan, Abbado, and Carlos Kleiber, among others. If Dudamel doesn't eclipse those or others atop the mountain of Beethoven symphony recordings, he gives fine performances brimming with vitality and excitement. His youth orchestra sounds as good as many better known ensembles, playing with spontaneity and technical expertise. Dudamel excels in painting vivid orchestral colors and lending rhythmic impetus to the fast movements of both symphonies, surely a prerequisite for conveying the power of the Fifth and the dancing rhythms of the Seventh. But he does tend to exaggerate dynamics, following powerful orchestral outbursts with barely audible solo or section passages. And his slow movements, while decently done, tend to lack flow and energy. Still, an impressive debut, heralding a welcome new face on the international conducting scene. --Dan Davis

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Moving.......2007-06-27

Somehow this particular version moved me. Maybe I was not expecting much from it, but it has some undelying force in the music that really touched some fiber in me. And that I think is the signal of a great musical performance.

5 out of 5 stars " A Revelation".......2007-06-17

In these performances of Beethoven symphonies, ones already recorded earlier and frequently by the great orchestras of the world, up and coming conductor Gustavo Dudamel, leading something called the Simon Bolivar Youth Orchestra of Venezuela, nevertheless produces revelations of a sort. As if rubbing the familiar scores clean of the accumulated tarnish of the ordinary, he and his energetic group, largely made up of former street kids, clearly put into fresh and welcome prominence that revolution in sound dynamics Beethoven introduced into music. Whereas soft passages still have a Mozartian delicacy and dance-like grace, forte ones have a thrilling power and majesty new in Western music. The transition from the 3rd to 4th movement of the 5th symphony, where Dudamel produces a wonderful rise in sound from near inaudibility to joyful sonic grandeur, is especially illustrative in this regard.
Though the orchestra here may not be the world's most accomplished, its limitations pale into insignificance before its skill in communicating an obvious love of the music being played. While soft passages receive what can only be described as lingering, almost lover-like caresses, loud and spirited ones convey a ferocious passion and energy which take the breath away. These are performances not to be overlooked.

5 out of 5 stars A Debut Recording For the Ages.......2007-06-02

Does Sir Simon Rattle's comment count for anything about these stupendous performances? He said (of Dudamel and the Simon Bolivar Youth Orchestra of Venezuela) and I quote: "THIS IS THE MOST IMPORTANT THING HAPPENING IN CLASSICAL MUSIC ANYWHERE". Make that in music anywhere, period.

5 out of 5 stars Two Powerful Forces of Nature Soaring Above the Heavens.......2007-05-26

What an experience to behold: A beautiful, young powerhouse at the helm of an incredibly amazing orchestra of young people who are product of an equally impressive musical educational system. The other part of the equation that makes this recording even more sublime is that they are interpreting the music of Beethoven - his Symphonies 5 and 7. Gustavo Dudamel, THE MAESTRO OF THE 21ST CENTURY, commands every nuance, note to dance, cry, sing - to provoke and reach to the inner depths of the soul. The Simon Bolivar Youth Orchestra of Venezuela delivers each work with power, sensitivity with its exceptional form of musicianship and expression that leaves one yearning for more!!

Music is a healing potion designed to create joy and move the human spirit. As I listen to this recording, I am deeply reminded of the beauty and grandeur that creativity offers to make life a wonderful place in which to be a part.

5 out of 5 stars The flaming torch of the genius!.......2007-01-20

It' s very difficult for me to talk - as Venezuelan citizen - with meridian objectivity, about the stature and mercurial emotional power Dudamel confers to every score he conducts. He has been born with that ominous inner fire, in order to express with admirable eloquence, the oneness contained in the core of every Opus conducted by him.

The countless testimonials all around the world seem to confirm it. This prodigious and very young master of the baton (26) simply has no limits, so we will really hope and wish from him to lead us for unexplored roads into the enormous musical universe.

Bravo maestro!

Gustavo Cerati trades in his electronic urges for rock reverb and jangly guitar riffs on Ahi Vamos, his first proper solo studio effort since 2002's Siempre es Hoy. In actuality, the new disc is closer in sound to some of Cerati's work as frontman for Argentine rock band Soda Stereo, which flourished throughout the 1980s. Cerati was also surely influenced by his acclaimed work with Shakira, Los Caifanes, and Babasonicos. Whatever the reason, it's allowed the prolific performer to remain a relevant force in the rock en espanol world without relying on an easy regurgitation of hits. Ahi Vamos swoops and swirls through an urgent array of styles, from arena-rock fist pumpers ("Uno Entre 1000") to '80s-inspired retro grooves ("Caravana") and moments of sparkling commercial immediacy ("Adios," "Otra Piel"). Through it all, Cerati's way with a guitar remains a wily, wondrous highlight. --Joey Guerra

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Gustavo Cerati is absolutely brilliant...........2007-06-29

Although this is not my fave album, it is still excellent. I saw him performing in Central Park last summer and actually got to meet him. Here is a review that I wrote about the concert. By the way, Soda Stereo has reunited and are currently touring.

Gustavo Cerati - Ahi Vamos Tour

Impeccably gifted with a long history of hits scattered throughout the South American continent (namely from his stint as lead singer of Soda Stereo), Cerati is unarguably considered a prodigy by Latin Rock's standards. With his new album he has once again proven that he is not one to remain fixed in one musical genre or sound. He has morphed himself from an eclectic combination of rock fused with electronica in previous releases like Siempre es Hoy and Bocanada, to going back to his Soda Stereo roots in Ahi Vamos - that of pure rock and roll.

On what turned out to be a hot summer day - Saturday August 5th, Central Park SummerStage was riddled with fans stemming from his Soda days, to more recently converted Cerati fans. With his signature dark green shirt and the beaming black and white album logo prominently displayed in the background, Cerati was ready to put on a show. Cerati played some familiar Soda songs, like Profugos, one of my personal favorites which is reminiscent of the sounds and melodies of early U2. In addition he played many titles from his latest release Ahi Vamos, like Me Quedo Aqui, a romantic and tender ballad that depicts the hardships and struggles one endures in relationships, and Lago en el Cielo, an upbeat but sentimental tune about rekindling old feelings. Paseo Inmoral and Cosas Imposibles, two of his most popular songs in his solo career, were also enjoyed by all. Gustavo Cerati and his band members have demonstrated that they can create music that varies and crosses various genres successfully and effortlessly. The concert was full of energy and liveliness, an absolute success despite the scorching hot weather.

5 out of 5 stars Great album.......2007-05-06

When I first read that Gustavo Cerati's new album was guitar-driven, I didn't know quite what to expect since I am most familiar with his more electronic-oriented music and sometimes find guitar-based music a little flat. However, this album does not disappoint. I enjoyed this album from the first time I listened to it, which to me is a sign of a good album.

Cerati certainly knows how to create richly layered and interesting music without the electronic sounds that have characterized his previous works. All of the songs on this album are worthwhile, complex, and interesting, covering a range of moods from rocking songs to more spacey and trippy ones. And one other thing that I love about this album is that there is so much going on in each song, each sometimes feeling like an entire album unto itself. I feel like I hear new things every time I listen to this album.

Over all, I highly recommend this album. There are only one or two songs I'm not crazy about, but other than that it is very, very good. Soda Stereo fans will certainly enjoy this one, as will fans of Cerati's solo works.

1 out of 5 stars Cada disco es mas dificil de gustar.

5 out of 5 stars Al fin su CD, definitivamente........2007-01-11

4 out of 5 stars Still a great album.......2006-12-30

"Ahi Vamos" (There We Go) is Gustavo Cerati's fifth solo album. About three years passed between this and 2003's "Siempre es Hoy". As much of a Cerati fan that I am I have to admit that it's the first time I have skipped some tracks. There's 13 tracks total but it still would've been a good album with a couple of songs left out in the final cut, or whatever you call it.

I'm not gonna say which songs I didn't like because other people may like them, maybe because they haven't really grown on me yet. But the fact is that nearly every song is composed after a different era or genre of rock.

'Al fin sucede' and 'La excepcion' start up with very raw old rock and roll. 'Uno entre 1000' starts slow but it gets crazy at the last half. 'Caravana' sounds like it could have been played in the 80s. 'Adios' is Cerati's more personal song, therefore it's very good. 'Me quedo aqui' is very melodic and peaceful. 'Lago en el cielo' was arranged with Morrissey in mind, I think.

'Dios nos libre' is very hard and raw like the first two tracks. 'Otra piel' is very romantic and poetic, perhaps the best-written song in the album; the type of song that makes sense if you're really really in love. 'Medium' is also a very good track which has not much lyrics but very good arrangements. 'Bomba de tiempo' sounds like a song that could've come out of "Siempre es hoy", it's very electronic. 'Crimen' is the first single released and it pretty much sums up the theme of this album. It's a song fitting for the brokenhearted. 'Jugo de luna' closes things up rather nicely with very poppy sounds.

Eclectic electronic album with an authentic latin flavor. A must have item. Highly recomended if u can get one.

5 out of 5 stars Transition between Soda and Solo. Excellent!.......2005-10-11

First of all Melero is where Cerati first got interested in what now is his signature electronic / rock sound. This is a great album. There are some repeats of different versions, but a must have. * Marea De Venus rattles of Argentine girls' names and what really goes on at night, ** Quatro is a "techno "if you will song. Primitive due to the time period, but you could work out to it, and *** La Cuerda Planetaria has Melero singing. A must have if you are a true Cerati / Soda fan. Great guitar work and Cerati's voice is clear & strong. Think Amor Amarillo with beats & loops. The great thing about Cerati is he can work with different artists / genres and it's always a classic. It's said all humans mysteriously lose 21 grams upon their death, a notion that inspires much hard-boiled philosophizing in Mexican director Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu's structurally ambitious follow-up to Amores Perros. As in that film, several characters' lives become intertwined via a tragic accident, but here told via a chronologically disjointed structure that's a masterfully wrought puzzle of editing and plot construction. Given that unusual structure, the musical soundtrack by Gustavo Santolalla by necessity carries much of the film's mood and emotional undercurrents in its spare, brooding cues and occasional songs. The composer's primary instruments here are a heavy-vibrato electric guitar (its tone reminiscent of the great Ry Cooder) and an equally altered accordion, set against a ambient wash of electronics and percussion that's so murky as to often seem impenetrable. The Kronos Quartet admirably matches the mood with their closing rendition of the haunting "When Our Wings Are Cut, Can We Still Fly." The hip-hop swing of Ozomati's "Cut Chemist Suite" and R&B of Ann Sexton help anchor it in a more familiar frame of reference, while Benicio del Toro's spooky, spoken-word take on "Shake, Rattle and Roll" (a performance recorded in Memphis' legendary Sun Studios, no less) effectively channels Tom Waits by way of David Lynch. Another fine example of the evocative, genre-free possibilities of modern film music. --Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars 21 Grams, 16 Tracks .......2006-07-04

This movie is not exactly average. And the same applies to this magnificent soundtrack.
Some of the tracks featured are very flawed. Tracks 4, 7, 9, and 12 aren't really necessary. 4,9, and 12 are songs by other artists that I guess must be in the movie, and 7 is a totally bizarre track of Benicio Del Torro just saying, "Wash your face and hands. Get in the kitchen. I'm hungry," and so forth. I don't know what exactly went on during the production of that, but it kind of sounds like a drunken rant.
The other tracks however, are wonderful. The same theme is played in several, but the music is so atmospheric and charismatic that it doesn't get mundane. The tracks are filled with beautiful, and moody melodies that echo greatly the themes and meaning of the film itself.
A great aspect of the soundtrack is that the tracks are extremely short. The longest (Del Torro's insane hypnotic track) clocks in at six minutes. Most are about 2 minutes. This makes them accessible, short and sweet.
I especially love the second to last track "Can Light Be Found in the Darkness."
Rent the film, buy the soundtrack.

3 out of 5 stars 3.5 Stars for 21 Grams.......2006-01-31

Gustavo's score for 21 Grams is haunting, beautiful, and evocative...unfortunately, too little of it appears on this album. Which is not really a fault of Varese Sarabande (this time), but mostly because there doesn't seem to be much more than 20-25 minutes of score in the movie, either. On the plus side, there is more score here than the terrible 15 minute treatment of Gustavo's Brokeback Mountain CD, but not much, and the additional songs are rather useless - Low Rider is a gooder, but completely out of place, Ann Sexton's is boring, the rap song is horrendous, and Shake Rattle and Roll is almost painful to listen to (6 minutes of Benicio Del Toro mutter an Elvis song is a lot to take).
That having said, I should really be focusing more on what's here than what isn't. The score is understated, but beautiful, and captures the mood of the film perfectly. The two final tracks were worth my 11 bucks alone - they're mysterious, moving, and rather wonderful. Because of the impact of the music, one wishes more of it was here than 20-25 minutes (not exactly sure how much score exactly is here), but then, that might just be a creative choice for the film.

1 out of 5 stars Not my style.......2005-07-22

This was a gift intended to be of the Motorcycle Diaries genre. A severe disappointment. Very little music, a lot of deep voice mystical inference. A little too extreme (weird?) if you are expecting music.

5 out of 5 stars Great for nighttime.......2004-09-18

Being one the most popular producers in Rock En Espanol, I've kept an eye on Gustavo Santaolalla's solo productions. They are appealing to me partly because of how different they are from the material he produces for others. Among the bands that have worked with him are Cafe Tacuba, Molotov and other acts that are do not precisely play "quiet" music. Yet, Santaolalla's music is not jumpy or upbeat, but rather calm, almost on an ambient note, incorporating instruments native to South America.

In the score to "21 Grams", thanks to the extensive use of the bandoneon, there's a strong Argentinian flavor in the midst of the darkness that the music carries. The songs almost all have a voice of their own, which allows them to answer in musical terms the questions that the songtitles pose: "Do We Lose 21 Grams?", "Can I Be Forgiven?", "Can Light Be Found In The Darkness?". Complementing Santaolalla's tracks are a solid Ozomatli song, inviting eclectic tunes by War and Ann Sexton, a Ronroco-like song by Kronos Quartet and the most interesting rendition of "Shake Rattle and Roll" you will ever hear, sung (or rather recited in a dark tone) by Benicio Del Toro himself.

Though I didn't find the album to be his best work to date (I still feel his first one, "Ronroco" and the OST to "Amores Perros", which he majestically produced, are his best and second best albums), still I recommend it as an incredible work, one that I particularly enjoy listening at night, while writing or reading.

5 out of 5 stars One of my cosistent "go to" albums.......2007-06-19

I love this album and have listened to it countless times. Cerati's guitar is magic and his vocals are superb. There is not a weak song on the entire album and I always feel great and charged up after a listen. Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars The road is set..........2005-07-20

Being this the first solo album from the vocal lead of one of the greatest rock Latin American bands, there's not much to do but to listen to it with the expectations that a fan of Soda Stereo should have. What is there to say about it? Praise only.

By listening to this album and analyzing each of the ten tracks included, one of the first things to notice is that the sound has nothing to do with Soda Stereo, which basically means that contrary to what many fans believe, Gustavo Cerati was not the essence of the band but another member.

The lyrics are quite Gustavo's style, if there is something to praise and dignify from this album is the level of experimentation of the music. `Amor amarillo' opens abruptly the album and demonstrates that we are about to listen a new proposal from this magnificent musician. `Lisa' is one of the best moments of this album, the instrumentation and the guitar are provide a weird sensation very ad hoc to the lyrics. `Yo te llevo para que me lleves' (the companion video for this song is equally funny), `Pulsar', `Cabeza de medusa', `Av Alcorta' all have a very experimental sound and are difficult to define musically speaking, which again brings the point of how advanced was Gustavo for his time when this album was recorded in 1993; by listening to this disc you can clearly see certain influences for the following Soda Stereo albums. `Bajan' original from Luis Alberto Spinetta has a very decent homage on the album. `Rombos' is another great song and the music is just unbelievable.

I guess there is nothing else to add. This album presented Gustavo as a great musician and as a visionary, when music suffered from the lack of creativity and commercialism Gustavo came up with this brilliant work, and he continues doing so nowadays. 10 great songs make this record a must for music lovers, especially if you enjoy rock in Spanish, the mixture of rhythms and sounds Cerati created for this album can be listened today and no aging will be perceived, all songs remain as enjoyable as in the beginning.

5 out of 5 stars The Mold.......2004-10-17

This CD comes to show the musical reason of the separation of Soda Estereo here you will be able to see the pure musical style and genius of Gustavo Cerati, You will be able to observe the long overdue extreme amputation of the commercial sound of Reggae which was the style of the other members of the group and had undermine the excellences of Soda Estereo for so long.
In this CD you will be able to appreciate one of the greatest composer and most privileged voices that Latin America has to offer, Even do is something very hard to admit for many Gustavo Cerati music and vocal style had been the blue print were most of the modern Latin Pop Rock groups like Mana, Atercipelados and Juanes had found (clone) their style. However none of these artist have got even close to match is musical or vocal genius. So in essence if you want to heard the best Latin American Popular Rock has to offer get your self a copy of this CD.

4 out of 5 stars Adelantado a su epoca.......2003-04-08

5 out of 5 stars Sencillo, como debe ser........2003-03-12

Definitely one of Cerati's best work as a Producer and a Musician. It was the stepping stone for what he would be recognized in the future (his Electro/Rock Musical Style). Very centralized as a Rock album with many electronic elements, Bocanada is a masterpiece of creativity ahead of its time. My Favorite tracks ( "Rio babel" & "Beautiful" ) are both musical experiences you love to hear over and over again... Buy this Album!

Gustavo Cerati's Bocanada is a masterpiece. It offers an engrossing and ambitious collage of musical influences done with consummate artistry. Lyrically it is mysterious and poetic. The album is a sonic departure from Cerati's work with Soda Stereo. Gustavo Cerati is Latin-America's finest Rock-Pop exponent and this work, Bocanada is a musical landmark. Buy it now!

I have heard Cerati before, but this one's knocked me out. I was at a Hispanic furniture store once, wandering around doing nothing; this CD came on in the background. After a few tracks, I was so captivated by the beauty and emotion of this project, I had to just sit down and listen to it. The blend of strings, accoustic guitar, electronics, beautiful harmonies and beat. This CD is an absolute must for anyone who truly appreciates great music.

5 out of 5 stars Mariano.......2006-08-01

This is Cerati's second solo album and it has a different style than the previous one. Here he incorporates a wide variety of elements including several different electronic effects, tribal percussions, folkloric instruments, etc. Cerati mixes many styles and gives the album a kaleidoscopic effect making of it some sort of collage. I strongly recommend this album, particularly to people that are enthusiastic about music and appreciate the detail in it. One of the best albums I've heard.
