Sweet and Sublime.......1999-06-13

"La valse de Francois T" makes my heart want to burst. Never has sweet melancholia been so sweetly and lyrically expressed. This entire album is a godsend, but "La valse" - it is something else, far beyond my power to convey.

The aural equivalent of Truffaut's films: humane, touching........1998-10-03

Hitchcock had Bernard Herrmann, and Spielberg has John Williams, and Francois Truffaut had Georges Delerue. "Jules and Jim" jauntily evokes the delicious problems of one woman in love with two men. With "Shoot the Piano Player" you can almost see Charles Aznavour in his seedy Paris cafe. And most gloriously, for Truffaut's Oscar winner as Best Foreign Film, "Day for Night," Delerue composes a chorale that celebrates the endlessly repetitious, endlessly varied rituals of filmmaking. A wonderful collection of themes from nine films (plus "La valse de Francois T."), performed by the London Sinfonietta under the direction of Hugh Wolff.

Music to my ears ..........2007-03-12

This is one of the greatest instrumental talents I've heard in years. This cd has some of my all-time favorite movie tunes including 'Moon River', 'Somewhere Over the Rainbow', and a very beautiful version of 'My Heart Will Go On'. This is the actual band that played in the 1997 movie Titanic and I'm truly thankful that they made this recording for everyone to enjoy. I'll cherish it for years to come. Thank you!

Familiar music with good performance.......1999-10-03

This CD contains many familiar music from films and the performance of the musicians is very good particularly track 16. I also find the music very relax and enjoyable and can bring the memory of those films if one has ever seen them.

Joseph Kosma was a Hungarian Jew who studied in Germany and, on the run from the Nazis, ended up in France, fighting with the Resistance and composing scores for classic French films like La Grande Illusion and Les Enfants du Paradis. Even more famous than his film scores, however, were his cabaret songs, which intelligently synthesize the French chanson with German cabaret, gypsy violin music, the feverish passion of klezmer, and a pizzazz that is all Hungarian. A list of his lyricists and collaborators is a roll call of mid-century France --Prévert, Sartre, Raymond Queneau, and Juliet Greco. The fame of his greatest collaboration with Prévert ("Les Feuilles Mortes" is perhaps even better known in its English version, "Autumn Leaves") should not blind us to the importance of all of his work in this field. The throaty smoothness of Francois Le Roux admirably complements these dramatic performances of an eclectic selection of songs. --Roz Kaveney

You don't have to love the flute for this, but if you do..........2007-04-26

I'll start out by admitting that the CD I bought was significantly cheaper. On sale. Fine. Maybe I'm being judgemental then by saying this, but this is absolutely worth it.

In general, flutes have the capability to be the most beautiful instrument in existence. You can love the piano, adore the violin, think the cello gorgeous, but ultimately - the flute has the most emotion, the greatest feeling, and can be the loveliest instrument of them all. And think about it - we love string quartets. So what about a flute quartet?

And, indeed, the result is simply gorgeous. The music is light and beautiful, but still has enough to it that it's pleasant to listen to. It's always beautiful. While some pieces are just a bit simple and more fluttery than anything else, some pieces have more substance and feeling. Even some smaller pieces, more in the "fluttery" direction, have the power to make you stop and just go, "Aw". It's sweet and lovely. Others aren't quite as "cheerful". The "Pompeux" is slow, solemn, and very beautiful.

Oh, and back to the price... It's worth it. This is for any flute lover. This is for any quartet lover. This is for any impressionism lover. This is for anyone who can appreciate beauty. This is for you.

From APR's treasure chest.......2000-09-01

I daresay this disc is a positive "mixed bag", a well-done blend of old and new recordings by pianists who have been featured earlier on APR releases and by "newcomcers". It is a real pleasure also to learn from the booklet that Cor de Groot's recorded legacy will be in the catalogue again. And Sergio Fiorentino's Rachmaninov-like account of Mendelssohn's "Spinning Song" and above all his incomparable recording of that composer's Etude in B flat cannont be appreciated enough.

This CD contains a fascinating variety of pieces and pianists. I had never heard the "Musical Box" by Deodat de Severac - very amusing. The Alkan Prelude played by Ronald Smith is well worth hearing. I would further recommend his new double CD, also on APR - containing Alkan Chamber Works + some piano pieces.(APR 7032)

The French musical salon has gathered much dust over the years. The heavy curtains and rich hangings make the place stuffy. So let us draw them back, unfasten the guilded espagnolettes and catches, open wide the windows, and let in some fresh air! Then, giving cliché and convention a good shake over the balustrade, take a new fresh look at the French mélodie of the second half on the nineteenth century. This is a world of intimacy, of the small format, briefly depicting a scene, an atmosphere, a mood, like the German lied. The harmonic refinement and apt prosody, the art and sensitivity shown by the composers who indulged in the repertoire, give it a status, close to the 'miniature', that was later to become honored by Bizet, Duparc, Poulenc, Ravel, and Debussy. Not what I expected.......2000-09-30

This compilation does not contain titles of real hit movies. It contains mostly sentimental or comic songs from old movies and even from the ones I managed to recognise only a handful were original. It struck me hard to find "Enae Volare" from "Les Visiteurs", the only title I ordered this compilation for, terribly altered but that might concern me alone. Finding "What a Feeling" from "Flashdance" similarly altered made me wonder... later, on the back of the box, I found a small note saying, as I could decrypt from French, that the songs in the album were not necessary original. I should've been warned about this in advance!
