Every Bad Boy Needs A Bad Girl.......2007-02-24

The group Total came out when Bad Boy was on top and they really stoodout for a while. On their debut, this album was pretty solid although they didn't have the best voices the choice of songs showcased their vocals well. Pam had that distinct voice that you knew a Total song when you heard it. Keisha was the savvy one, and Kima had a baby voice. Anyway the best tracks on the album are "Don't Ever Change", "Kissin' You", "No One Else",and "Spend Some Time". There really aren't any filler tracks so if you haven't already should definitely check out these "former" Bad Girls.

I've had this since it came out in 96, i used to play it in the clubs then, and people still borrow it to play in the clubs now..... that speaks for itself!!!

I listened to this disc for the first time in a while and was again surprised at how good a debut this is. This album debuted at a golden time for Bad Boy Records and the tone and brash attitude of the trio instantly distinguished them from the other r&b girl groups of that era. The monster hit off of the disc is CAN'T YOU SEE which still sounds great years later.

The second huge single, KISSIN YOU is such a sweetly groovin' ballad and showed that the group wasn't only going to be the background vocalists for Bad Boy's rappers.

Other standout singles to me are: NO ONE ELSE, TELL ME, LOVE IS ALL WE NEED & DON'T EVER CHANGE. Although the producers used a fair amount of samples, like on Mary J. Blige's MY LIFE, they were used in a fresh way which created a new sound for a new group.

I'd recommend this disc to anyone who's curious about not only early Bad Boy artists but also how this group sounded in comparison to some of the other r&b girl groups out at that time.

Songs to get stuck in your head for days..........2006-03-02

Any true fan of The Adventures of Pete and Pete knows how much the music of Polaris contributed to the excellence of the show. "She is Staggering" is indescribably beautiful and perfect, one of my favorite songs of all time. Everyone who loves the show needs to have this CD, but even people who have never heard of Pete and Pete would enjoy it as well. It's simply very good music.

ive looked at buying this cd for years...and recently i was givin season one of pete and pete on dvd and this prompted me to say aw heck lets get the cd...and ive been kicking myself now for not doin it years ago...the cd is so solid...not only does it tie into the series in such a key manor but the songs are some of the best ive heard in a few years...and with all the crap thats comin out in music these days it really nice to hear an album that is this good...even tho polaris only existed for pete and pete...this cd sits in my all time top 5 and it will damn hard to get it outta there...

Polaris, aka the guys who did the music for the hit Nickelodeon show Pete & Pete, are a really good band with an unfortunately unappealing singer (in some of the songs). He's not bad, but I can certainly see some people not liking him. However, Polaris makes up for this with some very high quality songs (see "Waiting For October" and "Everywhere", especially), and as a whole I'd say the pros far outweigh the cons. Musically it's very reminiscent of The Ocean Blue or R.E.M., as there's not much innovation here. You probably won't care about that in the end, though. The production is also pretty well done, though nothing to write home about. The lyrics are pretty interesting, though nothing really deep - you'll probably like listening to them closely I think. Every song here is good, but what pushes it up to a "5" are the songs "Waiting For October" and "Everything" which are just awesomely nostalgiac 90's pop rock songs. It's barely not a classic, so if you like your pop rock in the vein of R.E.M. or The Ocean Blue, then chances are you'll love Polaris! Highly recommended!

Ahhh...the memories........2007-05-10

God, how I used to LOVE this song back in the day. Even now, I can still hear it in my head, and after I saw that GPS commercial, with an audio clip digitally remastered, I just fell in love with it all over again, even though it was only 2-3 seconds. Still, it only took that long to remember the timesI would listen to that faithfully. I've yet to own it on audio CD/DVD, but soon plan to now. This looks like something that would come from Heaven itself, to be completely digitllly restored and remastered!!! What a dream come true! Well, I'm sold, how 'bout you?

Late 80s industrial breakthrough.......2007-03-09

I still remember the first time I watched the video for "Murderous" on "120 minutes" in the late 80s, back when MTV used to play music videos. I was lucky enough to record it on VHS, and I watched it all over and over again for months. A friend in school ended up buying the album, made a copy for me, and I was transformed. The heavy beats, the energy, the hard pumping synth, the angst in the lyrics, all resonated with me.

I was extremely lucky to catch them live in the early 90s ("Ebbhead Tour"), and to this day, I still think it was one of the best live performances in a small venue I have ever seen...very visual, very goth-like, up to par with Front 242's live show around the same time.

This is definitely a very "pioneer" production, and their best effort. This album is what made them who they are today, even though they deviated from this sound, to what some consider a more "watered-down" version. And incredible industrial gem. 5 Stars.

This is not industrial... this is just loops........2007-01-08

This band might have share the same years in which industrial was popular, but they sound annoyingly repetitive. Wherever I go, if I search for FRONT 242 music I always end with these guys in the list, like if you like these you might like these too. Well, not really. FRONT 242 uses loops too, but they don't make the loops the entire song. This guys probably are cool if you like for example the Andy Warhol movie where he filmed the empire state building for 24 hours. No dialog, no music, one shot. If you can stand that type of movie, this music is for you.

For someone trying to get into "industrial" this is not the way to go. Hell, I wouldn't recommend this album to anyone.

Here's what's on it: VERY simple drum tracks from a very old, annoyingly fake sounding drum machine and VERY plain synthesizer loops. There is no musical value here; there are at most 2 synth loops on top of a drum track and vocals. The loops aren't interesting at all, just a hand full of notes played over and over. The singing gets irritating after the fourth track.

When I first picked up the album, I thought it had potential but now I realize it does not. If you are thinking about buying it, I HIGHLY recommend listening to it before you buy, this is not for everyone.

Until i bought this album! Right from the first song, this album commands you to do something physical or active. I started jogging after the first few listens, and although it did hurt at first, you eventually forget about it and lose yourself in the fast paced beats, and the amazing basslines. The shouting vocals also helped, they acted as though they were being sung by a drill seargant at a boot camp. It is impossible to sit still during this album. just get it if you need exercise, or if you just want something agressive yet not headache inducing. You will realise that there is a purpose to fitness!

Elmer Bernstein Film Music Collection.......2006-11-03

This is compilation of hit film music from one of the greatest composers in motion pictures. What is surprising though is the music not included like the Ghost And The Darkness, the 13th Warrior, Rudy and others. To be sure, 4 discs are not enough for a composure of this stature. THe recording, however, is an "engineering masterpiece" which makes the music even more enjoyable than when you first heard it at the movies. When are we ging to get the music that was omittd from this compilaton?

Overall a strong Goldsmith sampler.......2006-04-11

Okay, this is a CD review, so the focus is on music, but I've got to say this first: this has got to be a contender for the ugliest cover art ever. I mean, come on...instead of a tribute to the composer, the cover looks like someone spilled a glass of merlot over a NASA photo.

Fortunately, even an ugly cover will not ruin good music. And the good news is that I'd say about 75 percent of the music is good....and on a 4 cd set, that's a lot. Like other Silva compilations, the strength of this compilation is the variety. There are selections from the big releases (Star Trek, Omen, Rambo), but there is also a healthy dose of tracks from the smaller releases(Under Fire, Lionheart, The Swarm).

Two examples come to mind. Capricorn One and The Great Train Robbery are two movies that are not exactly household names today, but are dominated by two of Goldmith's finest main themes. The City of Prague Philharmonic come through with terrific renditions. And there are plenty of other strong performances...a few being concert versions conducted by Goldsmith himself. Suprisingly, "The Wind and the Lion" works, which is no small accomplishment given the ferentic original performance of "Raisuli Attacks".

It's not a complete success. A few of the performances fall flat, particularly some of the more inventive scores. Total Recall is just bad, mangling the performance with poor percussion and synthesizer choices to boot. Also a letdown is the Klingon Attack from the first Star Trek movie. The Prague Philhamonic attempt doesn't sound bad--it's just that once you've heard the original soundtrack's "blaster beam" with enough bass to rattle your teeth...well let's just say Silva's version is a little tinny in comparison.

But I shouldn't dwell on the negative. Overall, this is a strong sampler of Goldsmith's variety. There are plenty of quality performances here, and despite a few omissions (noticeably Planet of the Apes)this is a very good release from Silva.

Jerry Goldsmith - 40 years of pleasure.......2006-02-22

It was wonderful to hear Mr. Goldsmith's music that went all the way back to The Man from UNCLE, The Waltons, Dr Kildare, etc. And then to hear his music up to the present. The man was a genius!

Almost the perfect compilation.......2005-12-31

Age has its value.... This sweeping collection of compositions brings back so many great memories. This collection shows how significant Goldsmith was for both the movie screen and the small screen. With such a grand collection, every reader can be assured that at least one movie or TV program they like or remember had Goldsmith's contribution. It was an amazing life and the collection well worth having.

However, as sweepig as it is, there are a few holes in the selection. "First Contact", one of the sweetest and richest compositions from the Star Trek is absent. "The Ghost and the Darkness" is missing and the "Medicine Man" music should include the theme song. By dwelling on several selections from the Blue Max, these were squeezed out. Three full and important movie themes got the axe.

However, all but "The Ghost and the Darkness" are readily available and not overly expensive as is the "Ghost" CD. This is a must have for the TV and movie music fan.

Before there was Hans Solo there was Napolean Solo, before ER there was Dr. Kildare. Jerry Goldsmith IS Sci-Fi. "Resistance is futile.. you MUST assimilate this CD collection."

Great Soundtrack.......2006-05-23

I think that the Total Recall score is one of Jerry Goldsmith's all time best & that's saying alot considering his resume (Star Trek, Alien, Rudy, Hoosiers etc.). The opening theme is particularly cool with it's dark forbidding powerful rythmic beat & the rest of the soundtrack is exceptional as well. You know that Hollywood also thought alot of this soundtrack becuz they used it incessantly all through the 90's as the background music for many action/sci-fi movie trailers.

The score is excellent. Jerry Goldsmith really does a great job for an action score. The climaxes, if you remember how the film goes, are great. I've had this score for a few years, and I think it's one of my favorites. I love movie scores. And this one was really good. Enjoy.

What a soundtrack!!.......2004-01-17

This in my opinion the best score Goldsmith has ever written.
The score is really different from other scores. It's far more complex. Goldsmith again combines an orchestra (The National Philharmonic, just gave a splendid performance) with synths, and succesfully.

"The Dream" introduces the main theme for the film. I think it's great. Other highlights cues are: "The Implant", "For Old Times' Sake", "Clever Girl" (Simply perfect), "A New Face" (Contains great tuba/bass-trombone stuff, just loud.), "The Mountain", "The Big Jump", "The Massacre", "The Treatment" (Superb), "The Hologram" (Just listen to the last two minutes of this track, amazing!), "End Of Dream" (Just keeps building and building) and "A New Life".

I think Goldsmith is the most original filmcomposer. I recently bought three Goldsmith scores and they were all just so different. Of course you can hear it's Goldsmith, but he seldom re-uses ideas.

Goldsmith really proves (again) he is the master of action music and superb rhythms. I recommend this score to all filmmusic/Goldsmith fans, BUT don't expect a score in the same style as "The Empire Strikes Back" or "Conan The Barbarian". This is really different music, but just as good. Just give it a try, listen it three or four times and I'm sure you're going to appreciate this score.

Major Excitement.......2003-06-15

From the very first note Total Recall is an action/sci-fi score of major authority. No one could have written better music for this movie other than Jerry Goldsmith. It feels futuristic, evokes the lonliness of Mars and has some thundering action tracks.

Simply put, Track 1 is a classic and a great introduction to the movie. Total Recall had clout from the very start. The chase cues in Track 7 'Clever Girl' are wicked and I've been humming them since I was 9.

The first release of this CD was back in 1990, but this version has twice as much music with better sound, a red cover instead of a blue one and extensive liner notes. An all-round much better edition for music collectors or Goldsmith fans.

And stay around for a couple of minutes after track 27 ends. The 'Rekall' theme tune from the ad in the movie comes to life. Goldsmith composed this little jingle too and it completes a fine package.

Totally a score to recall.......2003-02-08

When you want to superb action music, the first name that springs to mind is Jerry Goldsmith. This is brash, loud, and musically large in scale. This is everything an action score should be and more. "The Dream" opens the score with a driving, epic theme played over percussion and synths. "First Meeting" is a softly played synth track with hints of the main theme thrown in. "The Hollowgram" starts out with quietly played strings that leads to a barnstorming action sequence with plenty of tough brass fanfares. Another interesting track is "The Mutant" which is mainly a synthesizer cue with chimes thrown in. "The Treatment" contains some very difficult brass and string rhythms. "End of a Dream" is one of the best tracks with plenty of whirling strings and booming brass with driving percussion that never lets up. "A New Life" closes out the score nicely with a final rendition of the main theme. However, the track doesn't end there. If you keep playing the track, the Rekall television commercial jingle appears that was actually written by Jerry Goldsmith. (For a memory of a lifetime, Rekall, Rekall, Rekall is how it goes.) Other tracks to mention are "Clever Girl" with lots of rhythmic strings and hard hitting brass, "Space Station" which is an orchestral delight, and "The Big Jump" with all out brutal action music. Several tracks on here were never on the original album, which ran only 40 minutes in length. This deluxe score is 74 minutes in length, with well over 30 minutes of extra material that is brand new. The liner notes contain a very descriptive and lengthy commentary by Varese Sarabande record producer, Robert Townson that ties in the score with scenes of the film. The National Philharmonic Orchestra excels with power and orchestral might and the synthesizers provide other-worldly sounds that the orchestra cannot. An incredible and powerful action music score from the master of action music, Jerry Goldsmith.

The Only Demonstration Disc You'll Ever Need.......2006-06-10

Well, I suppose that depends on the type of music you're testing your equipment for. However, go to almost any online discussion of audio equipment, particularly subwoofers, and you'll come across this disc. Sure, most of the other reviewers mention the sound effects in less than glowing terms. It remains though that this disc contains some of the crazy lowest signals one can buy on disc. The T rex footsteps shake the windows in my house despite being below my hearing range with my Velodyne 12" sub. Incredible stuff. And the glass shattering sound effects in the Terminator theme can melt your tweeters too if turned up too loud. Don't take yourself too seriously for a few minutes and enjoy the noise!
Beyond that, musically this is one of the Cincinatti Pops' finest soundtrack collections. Perhaps the best. Almost all of their recordings are sonically of the highest quality (Copland: Music of America won a Grammy for best engineering), but all too often in recent years the releases have not met the standard of this album. Arrangers that don't begin to care what the composer's intent was or tacking on pre-fab endings are the worst offenders, but most of the selections here meet or exceed the quality of the original soundtracks. All around, a great soundtrack collection.

An Adventure For Your Ears.......2004-06-01

The Cincinnati Pops do an excellent job of faithfully reproducing movie soundtracks and this album is a perfect example. In fact after listening to this CD a few times, I tracked down some of the original soundtracks because I enjoyed the selections on here, such as the "El Cid" music and "Jurrasic Park." I also really enjoyed the music from "Henry V" "Robin Hood,"and "Hunt for Red October." The different tracks go together surprisingly well, like many of the pops other thematic CD's. While it might be helpful to have seen some of the movies the soundtracks come from, it is not crucial. The added soundeffects are a little gimmicky, but fairly short and on seperate tracks, so they can be skipped. If you enjoy movie soundtracks, this is a great investment.

Blows Away All Other Such Compilations!.......2003-04-02

The above quote is found prominantly on the back cover and is a warning not to be taken lightly. The respective tracks are awesome and should be played, as well as listened to, with great care.

A 20-bit digital recording that is perfect for surround-sound systems, "The Great Fantasy Adventure Album" is a wonder for fans of the sci-fi/fantasy film genre. Highlighting some truly landmark films, the 1994 release showcases compositions from the legends of past and contemporary film scoring. Themes from the likes of Rosza, Williams, Horner, Herrmann, and Elfman are grandiosely featured here.

The best cuts are Goldsmith's "Total Recall: Main Title", "Conan the Barbarian: Anvil of Crom" (Poledouris), and Brad Fiedel's "Terminator: Theme".

Upon hearing this trio, chills will not just go up the spine but will permeate every ounce of one's body

The perfect movie theme collection.......2000-08-16

I have a good number of Kunzel CDs, but this one could easily be called "Mark's Favorite Movie Themes." It doesn't matter that I have many of these repeated on other CDs; it saved me the trouble of having to burn my own 'faves' disc. It's good to see Basil Polodouris' "Conan" and "Red October" themes, he's often overlooked as a film composer, in my book, and regardless what one might think of the movie, the Conan score is still probably the best thing he's ever done. And the hard-to-find "Terminator" theme is hard NOT to listen to, with its highly unusual rythmic motif. I enjoy all the music selections, but having James Horner's sublime theme from "The Rocketeer" was well worth the price of the CD by itself. This is what a movie themes CD should be, and it helps that I happen to like Kunzel's choice of selections, for once. The sound effects that typically accompany these CDs are generally annoying, but I like the sonar segue into "Red October," and the T-Rex roar that precedes "Jurassic Park" is useful for scaring kids at Halloween.

No words can compare how remarkable this cd is. Combined with incredible sound quality, this cd will twist and turn you emotions with every single score. i can honestly say that this disc is the perfect relaxation and energizing thing ever.

Pure Force.......2006-04-11

Other reviewers have asserted that Negative Approach didn't understand hardcore and that their music missed the point entirely. Negative Approach was pure hardcore/punk. Hardcore/punk is a nihilistic outcry of pure rage and force. It expresses the disenfranchisement and alienation of its followers/participants. Negative Approach's music is pure force. It hits the listener like a ton of bricks. And so what if the lyrics aren't amazing and the music is a little cliched, that's not the point. The soul behind it is pure power, and it hits to the core of what hardcore/punk music is about.

I love negative approach. I really do. But if there is one drawback its that i cant listen to them all the time like some ofmy favorite bands like crass,addiction face,and the dead milkmen. Their just too angry. Ive got an analogy to sum it up for you. he hem. NEGATIVE APPROACH IS TO FURIOUS as DASHBOARD CONFESSIONAL IS TO UNREASONABLY BUTHURT OVER NOTHING. I love the album though i mean being mad isnt bad but N/A were certainly not the greatest.

pure rage.......2003-01-24

"Total Recall" is one of the best representations of hardcore that America has produced. It's not that Negative Approach are great musicians or lyricists, and the production is not what some people would call "passable" (though I love the raw stuff) ... it's that the sheer anger and nihilistic hopelessness that so many of us have experienced at one time or another comes through loud and clear in their music.
I have to take issue with a previous reviewer's comments on this album. He wrote that NA didn't "get it," that they were too one-dimensional and were just acting out on one aspect of punk/hardcore; the anger and disaffection.
Well, maybe that's how NA ACTUALLY felt. If they did write these songs out of affectation, I certainly don't hear it. The first 11 tracks (their song off of the "Process of Elimination" comp and their self titled 7") in particular are so full of venom and bile, with Brannon's perfectly growled vocals, that I can't believe Negative Approach didn't mean every word they sung at the time they were singing them.
Besides, I think bands like SSD are what made people laugh at hardcore (I love SSD too, by the way). The militantly straight edge bands that emerged in the early 80s probably did far more to alienate people than bands like NA. Yeah, maybe NA's fans were meatheads and skinheads... but, then again, so were a lot of Black Flag's (and Fear's!) fans.
At any rate, all that aside, this album rocks. The "Tied Down" LP isn't that great, but the rest of the tracks more than make up for it. Happy, well-adjusted people may not dig it, but as for angry f**k-ups, well, Negative Approach is IT.

Excellent 1980s hardcore you can't get enough of.......2002-12-14

This is a discography of the *very* influential midwestern hardcore band, with some appended live and demo tracks. If you like MINOR THREAT, BLACK FLAG, or SSD, this will appeal to you: classic songs such as "Can't Tell No One," "Deadstop," and "Why Be Something that You're Not?" should be in every punk's lexicon. The first 7" (#2-11) is amazing, and the LP is better than MINOR THREAT's LP. Most people don't like the live tracks but they are a good time if you can get beyond the bad sound quality. The only thing I would say is that most of this music is same-y so it can get boring if you aren't really into it. That said, this is a must-have.
