Another disappointment from Tommy Boy.......2006-11-27

If you read my review from volume one of this series, you'll get a general idea of the rest of the cd's. The shocker on this volume is Dana Dane's "Cinderfella", which, again, sounds like a bad vinyl recording. My 12inch single sounds much better. Tim Dog's "F**k Compton" is totaly butchered up due to the constant "reversing" of every curse word he utters (which is lot!) on this track, so it ruins the emphasis of the song.

Deeper, Melodic Chillout.......2006-09-08

I've always been a fan EDM (electronica dance music) and recently I wanted to try out some more down-tempo stuff. I had trouble enjoying the regular "chillout" albums that are so popular now. They lacked the depth and melodic rush you can appreciate in trance. This album, however, amazed me. Of all the albums I've tried this is by far the best. Captivating and deep, this album will appease any trance music fan's desire for something to dive into late at night, chillaxed in your armchair.

Great mood music.......2006-05-24

The cd has a good number of soothing songs that are perfect for a somber or relaxing mood. There a few tracks that are too repetitive, but for the most part this albumn produces soothing melodies to relax to.

Not very stimulating trance-but some rareties for collectors..........2005-09-22

"Deep Trance" in general is not the most energetic dance music you're going to experience. It's not as catchy as deep house, and it's not as beautiful and floaty as full NRG trance. But this disc does contain pretty much all full length mixes of some individual tracks you'd be hard pressed to find even on 12" vinyl, let alone CD. It spans nearly 10 years of club music, including tracks from the mid to late 90s up to some big tracks of today. One thing to note is that Beachball by Nalin & Kane is the instrumental, not the vocal version. And I would have preferred the Blank & Jones mix of Walking on Fire by Evolution, rather than the Bedrock mix. Track times:

Even better than Dance Essentials 1!!.......2002-04-03

Dance Essentials 2 is another classic pop/trance/dance comp. Great track selection, no real surprises here just a solid line up of current (Spring 2002) club/mix show "hits", yes many of the cuts included on Dance Essentials 2 are turning up elsewhere but if you like the type of anthems delivered by Iio, Daft Punk, Kosheen and Future Breeze (aka Darude) then this is one of the best comps out right now. "The Real Life" which samples Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody" should be as big in the clubs here as it was late last year over in Europe. That Daft Punk track never seems to get dull and "Rapture (Tastes So Sweet)" is actually getting some respect from the mainstream radio people of America (well, NY, LA & Miami anyway!!)I blasted this CD in the car as I drove out to the Hamptons last Saturday, boy it sounded great, Vol 1 is pretty cool also.

Disappointing Follow Up to Volume 1.......2002-03-30

If you got Dance Essentials, volume 1 and expected the second rendition to rival it, you will be sorely disappointed. This CD lacks the energy and constant "up" of volume 1. I have listened to volume 1 over and over and over ad nauseum, and STILL, I smile every time I hear it. I found myself jumping ahead to the next song on volume 2 due to the monotonous rhythm and lack of interesting vocals or accompaniment. What a disappointment. I will surely not RUSH to get volume 3.

great, if limited, collection........2003-01-30

This collection has many "essentials", along with volume 1, if you can find it, get both, for the novice jazz listener (like me). For the more seasoned listener it might seem a bit superficial. Also, it is rather limited, as their are no songs from other Blue Note artists, such as Chick Corea, on it. I'd recommend the "Best Of" for a collection of his works. (This release is also on Blue Note, but possibly out-of-print, so you might need to look a little to find it.) Still, worth a listen.

Surprise, Surprise.......2000-12-29

Most bluegrass "various artists" CDs lack real punch, what I call "easy listening bluegrass". This collection will knock you out cold. It samples old and new, with a rarely found balance of male and female artists. And every song is golden. If you're just starting out with bluegrass, as more and more people are, then this is the perfect introduction. If you're a long time fan, then I think you'll be surprised.

Chesapeake's "Blackjack Davey" will blow you away, and show you exactly how far and well bluegrass can stretch. "Ruby (are you mad at your man)" by The Osborne Brothers shows just how fast and powerful it can be. And The Charles River Vally Boys' version of the Beatles' "I've just seen a face" will show that the Beatles really should have been a bluegrass band! (OK that's pushing it.)

Anyway, buy it. You'll love it.

This One Has Legs.......2000-06-12

Compilations are risky business. I've been listening to Bluegrass for 25 years, and now usually avoid the "best of" stuff. But this is a clean diamond gem. I came back to order 2 more copies to send to family members (on whom I've been "prosetylizing" all these years). Want to hear what Bluegrass is all about? Here's a fine start. Something Old (Bill Monroe, of course). Something new (Check out Gillian Welch's gospel tune - if it don't make your knees weak, something is seriously the matter with you). Something borrowed (how about a Bluegrass version of the Beatles' "I Just Saw A Face"). And something blue (enough to put me in my favorite Bluegrass state of mind: A smile on my face, tears runnin down my cheeks, and the hairs on the back of my neck standing straight up. Jump on it!
