About the Artist
Half Pint was born Lindon Roberts (though also referred to on albums as "Lyndon Roberts," "London Roberts," "Linford Roberts," "Linton Roberts," and "A. Roberts") on November 11, 1961 at Rose Lane in Western Kingston as one of seven children. Early in his life he gained the nickname "Half Pint," referring to his small stature. Roberts was in the school choir at All Saints Primary School and sang at carol services and concerts. After he completed Penwood Secondary School in 1976, Roberts began to tour with Black Scorpio, Jammys, Gemini, Lee's Unlimited, and Kilimanjaro.

In 1983 Roberts released his first single, "Sally" as well as the most popular song of the year, "Winsome" (which was later covered as "Too Rude" by The Rolling Stones). Both tracks were released on the Sunset Label (later, Reggae Sting). Other early successful singles include "Crazy Girl," "Level the Vibes," and the raggamuffin anthem, "Greetings."

Through the years he has worked with producers such as Errol (John) Marshall & Errol (Myre) Lewis, Prince (King) Jammy, Sly & Robbie, George Phang, Jack Scorpio, Bobby "Digital" Dixon, Mass Hugh, and several others. He's also lent his vocals to other artists' songs, such as Garnett Silk, Tony Rebel, The Tamlins, and others and has been covered by world-reknowned pop groups like The Rolling Stones and Sublime.

Most of Half Pint's success came in the early-to-mid 1980's. Though he released a string of singles and achieved success with 1992's "Substitute Lover," Roberts was relatively quiet in the 1990's. In 1998 he released his first studio album in ten years, Legal We Legal and followed it with a 15-stop US tour with Anthony B.

In 1999, Half Pint appeared on the Long Beach Dub All-Stars album, Right Back, performing a track titled "Pass It On." LBDAS is made up primarily of former members of Sublime, a group that gained a lot of mainstream popularity for their song "What I Got," which was based on a hook from Half Pint's "Loving." In September and October of 1999, Pint toured with LBDAS, making waves around the United States. Late in 1999, Half Pint's most recent album, Closer to You hit the Net.

The future is looking bright for Half Pint, for he is one that has not alienated or lost fans along the way. Rather, he's stayed true to the roots of reggae music, sending positive vibes each and every time he holds the microphone.

The picture.......2006-12-11

I haven't purchased the CD but the picture of the inside of a church on the cover is not of a British church, like one would assume since it says its a recording of British choirs. This picture is of Notre Dame Basilica in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Just thought i'd let you know. I'll be honest; I'm one to judge things by it's cover and if the company took such care to choose a 'British' church for their British choir CD, I'm willing to bet the music is equally well selected... I'm being sarcastic. But I gave the product 5 stars because I didn't want to hurt its ratings just because i'm cynical. But check out the church if you're ever in Montreal, it's truly beautiful... here I'm not being sarcastic.

Well , I kinda like it! .......2005-01-13

Cales stuff has always sounded a bit demo -ish except for maybe the last 2; "Guitar Man" and the new "Tulsa" disc which are more produced . the dreaded (for some)drum machine also was part of the original J J' magic .. I still get a kick out of 'Call Me the Breeze' ..and I love the anti- production sound of the man, this one is a little gem, and has been with me since it was released . I go back to it , as I do all of em' time and time again. His stuff always sounds fresh and funky every time I put it on the player.

Closer to you is a 'not too bad' CD. I read one time that most of this CD was recorded in a day or two. In a way, it sounds it.

First, lets consider what I like about this CD. I like 'Like you used to', very nice, laid back (when isn't it?) accoustic, jazzy blues number. Some nice accoustic picking from Cale...a nice song.

Track seven, the 3/4 timed (almost waltzy) 'Rose in the Garden'. Very pretty, maybe a little too pretty for some; again a primarily accoustic number.

In less happy moments, Cale elects to fool around with a synth and drum machine. I guess this is no surprise - remeber that terrible drum machine on 'Call me the breeze'?

At any rate, Devil's nurse, Brown Dirt, Hard Love and Clsoer to you all feature this - and it sounds terrible; it completely screws up the mixes. Imagine a clunky little drum machine sound - in MONO!

Steve's song, the instumental closer with a 13 piece band is quite nice. As a rule though, it's the accoustic based songs that really work here.

A beautiful tribute to a great American musician. Folk songs, spirituals, and ballads popularized by Norman Luboff Choir, performed lovingly by some who toured and performed with him for more than a decade.

What a joy this CD is for Jackson and me! It allows us to celebrate Norman's universal influence and to share some of his greatness as musician.

I met Norman at a Choral Associates Workshop, a week-long educational feast introducing the writer behind those fabulous choral arrangements. I auditioned for him, met Jackson, and entered a beautiful world intertwined with impeccable musicianship, personal inspiration, friendship, and deep affection. The circle of musicians with whom I have come into contact since that week in June 1973 continues to nourish my musical soul today. So many of my life's connections were established that week, including meeting Jackson's touring friend, tenor-percussionist and then budding composer Chip Davis. The thread binding us and igniting a strong influence of excellence is Norman Luboff.

Norman's arrangements are exemplary of his genius. His appreciation for folk music is evidenced by his sincere and respectful treatment of each melody. Texts literally come alive with his nuance on important words, sensitive rubato, and expansive harmonizations. He always implored singers to sing folk or popular songs in the vernacular, as they are spoken.

Norman would enjoy the Cantorum's wonderful singing -- their robust voices, their natural sentimentality toward the lyrics, and the depth of their passion. These are the kinds of musicians that Norman engaged: fascinating singers with great voices, differing vocal timbre and energies. The fantastic mix of solo voices comfortable in both the popular and classical worlds contributes to the unique Luboff choral sound.

Norman Luboff Remembered.......2007-01-10

A very poor recording,almost amateurish. The voices seem to be adequate but the recording is so poor it is difficult to tell. This recording goes into my "I heard it once and that's enough" pile. The purchase was a mistake.

Please, more Choir, less Instruments!.......2005-06-08

I agree with the first reviewer. At age 56, I heard these guys live, and the arrangements were sublime. The vocals were amazing. Here, the instruments almost drown out the choir! Perhaps the pianist and bass player were relatives of the producer?? I would recommend almost any other Luboff CD over this one, even the ones reproduced with pops and hisses from the LP.

"Colorado Trail" is OK. "Shenandoah", one of the Choir's signature songs, is totally messed up.

Very disappointing, I'm sorry.

"A" FOR EFFORT.......2004-06-28

As a Norman Luboff Choir fan, I was extremely pleased to hear that a modern high fidelity remake was available of some of Mr. Luboff's works. Thank you to Mr. Berkey for resurrecting Mr. Luboff. I hope more discs are in the works or planned without the following shortcoming.

Unfortunately, the disc was disappointing because of what may appear to some to be a silly reason but not to me. The recording engineer probably did everything right except establish the presence of the choir relative to the instruments. Listen to a Norman Luboff Choir vinyl album or re-release on CD to hear what I mean.

In the original records, the choir is acoustically featured while in this CD, it's just another choir with equal emphasis placed on the orchestra. I hope that in future releases if any, the producer demands the same emphasis be placed on the choir voices as was originally applied in the recordings. After all, it is the Norman Luboff Choir voices I want to hear.

This CD is a Nebraska product, and a fine one it is! The director of the choir, Almeda Berkey, has combined with her husband, composer and professional pianist, Jackson, to produce this nostalgic look at the wonderful arrangements of their former mentor and employer, Norman Luboff. The liner notes in the accompanying booklet tell of the surprising association of Omaha's Chip Davis as a singer in the Luboff choir, along with Almeda. The choir is superb, well balanced, displaying beautiful voices and a thoroughly professional sound equal to that any of the Luboff choirs on the twelve LPs this author owns...Good variety in programming is a plus, as folk songs, pop songs, folk hymns and spirituals are all presented. Congratulations to the Berkeys, Recording Engineer Clete Baker and all involved on a first-rate recording!"

I expected it to be more praise and off the hook, but it wasn't.
This album is more Worship based, which isn't wrong. I just was sad because I had different expectations. This is a good album for worshipping God.
I hope his next will be more praize and off the hook. :)

I was really impressed with the album and I think that Gary should be commended for doing it, it is refreshing and different and I personally feel that it is just what he needed to do, to step out and really explore his talent and capabilities, he has now proved that he can do more then just gospel and do it well to, so I say good for Gary keep it up.

I WAS VERY DISAPPOINTED IN THIS CD. I HAVE PURCHASED 2 OF GARY OLIVERS PRIOR CDS AND LOVE THEM. I WAS SURE THIS CD WOULD BE RIGHT NEXT TO THEM BUT I WAS SO WRONG. THE OVERRALL CD SEEMS TO HAVE A R&B THEME RATHER THAN GIVING REVERANCE TO GOD. I BELIEVE THAT GARY OLIVER COULD HAVE DONE A MUCH BETTER JOB.

A truly surrealistic pillow of a text/sound work, Analogue Smoque combinates poet and La Folia honcho Mike Silverton's epic poe(m) (with Mike recitating) and the sounds (both electronic and not) of Tom Hamilton and Al Margolis. Sounds combine and contrast, highlight and ignore, as Silverton's opus unfolds in all its glory.

Mike Silverton will only say that "At first blush, the alert listener detects a link between Analogue Smoque and Madam Blavatsky. The magi demur. Rather, they say, the text reveals its author's interest in cryptorchidistics, i.e., states of non-descent." Tom Hamilton has composed and performed electronic music for over 30 years. Rather than addressing traditional modes of presentation and observation, Hamilton prefers to explore interaction and simultaneity as aspects of "present-time listening" on both the performers' and listeners' parts. Al Margolis has been working with electronics/sounds since New Year's Day 1984. His work can best be described as "sound fingerpainting."
