5 out of 5 stars One of the best artists worldwide!!!!!!!!!.......2007-04-24

Djavan's vocals and lyrics are some of the most incredible that I have ever heard. I love Brazilian music, but he is one of my favorites mainly because of his love songs. The live cd, in particular, shows his vocal talents and his smooth and comforting voice. As a matter of fact, my fiance (Brazilian) and I can't decide which Djavan song we will dance to at our wedding: "Um amor puro" or "Oceano". I'm willing to put my wedding dance in the hands of Djavan, no question!!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Djavan is great!.......2007-03-05

We own lots of Brazillian music CD's but this one is a favorite! So much so that our oldest took one to college with her! We bought another so as not to be without. Great warm music that is full of life- A favorite here!!JOnathan Saturen

Thanks Amazon. I could not get this CD here in my country. Amazon really helped me! Thanks again!!!

5 out of 5 stars THE modern composer from Brazil.......2003-11-14

Djavan is simply great. Is THE modern composer from Brazil (at least from the ones I know, which are not few)and one of the most capables in the world! And when I say capable I mean that he is one of those that can create songs in any rithm or meter (even in the most strange ones) and they will still be pop songs, that you can't stop listening inside your mind after having heard them. If you listen songs in this CD, you will sing them all day long (if you can, because they are not as easy to sing as to listen to) and you will recomend this LP (and every CD recorded by him)to the people you apreciate.
Well, to end I'll tell you that really feel sorry for not being able to talk about the populariy and the value that the crowds give to Djavan. His personal search and view of music can be copared to artists like Sting, Peter Gabriel (even though I think his music has a greater development than the one from the guys I mentioned) and Luis Alberto Spinetta (a great composer from my country that is the only one I can compare in good taste, deepness and musical development to Djavan; adding to this that he is a poet too, have a listen to him, I strongly recomend it!)
Well, buy it, you won't be dissapointed!

5 out of 5 stars Djavan and his unique music!!!.......2003-10-14

A while ago trying to deeper my knowledge into the music field I started listening to Bossanova (one of Brazil's most famous and rich music styles), which helped a lot since I play guitar and it's very hard to play the chords used in that style. After dominating a bit of Bossanova I tried to give an even farther step towards my musical knowledge, that's when I found this guy named Djavan. I bought this cd and since then I just can't stop listening and playing his songs. This guy is a treasure that I wish everyone could find and listen to. His music is pure poetry and makes you simply fly away. I would recommend anyone to buy this cd or any other cd that have his name on. It's really worth it!!!!

This was the first album I bought of Ivete Sangalo, and I became instantly addicted. EVERY SINGLE SONG was out of this world!!! It's one of the few cds that I can say from start to finish, it is a winner. She has such incredible stage presence, her fans adore her, and so do people all over the world. Some of the highlights: Eva/Medeley, A Lua Que eu te Dei, Flor do Reggae, Chupa Toda com Gilberto Gil, all of them are so great! That cd didn't leave my stereo for months. It's high energy, and can make you feel awesome, no matter how bad your day was---muito bom!

5 out of 5 stars Be in Brazil--virtually.......2006-10-10

This is a truly FUN live concert album;the crowd sings along, cheers, musicians improvise. One feels as if one is in Salvador, the capital of Bahia in northeastern Brazil.

Ivete Sangalo, who I first heard on Putumayo's out-of-print compilation "Festa Brasil"(in the song "Monsieur Samba")is a real discovery.Everybody's heard of Bebel Gilberto,Astrud Gilberto, and now Cibelle.Ivete Sangalo is tremendously talented. She's a former model like Natalie Imbruglia&Kylie Minogue, but unlike the both of them, she can ACTUALLY sing. She sings at many Brazilian carnivals.

"MTV Ao Vivo" is a very joyous album. The opening medleys bring you in.There are thoughtful slower numbers mixed in like "Faz Tempo" and "A lua q eu t dei".Highlights include "Chica Chica Boom Chic" and "De Ladinho." This live album is an excellent introduction to Brazilian music,or for those bored with current American pop music (such as that on American MTV).If you're interested into Brazilian pop, this album is for you!

5 out of 5 stars Buy the DVD instead.......2006-09-30

This is high-energy, Brazilian/carnaval dance music that will leave you very happy. Warning: This is the music equivalent of a double macchiato. Its side-effects include the creation of an intense desire in listener to visit Brazil to experience Carnaval for him or herself.

As aluded to by others, however, there are important songs -- namely duets -- which appear on the DVD but were left off of the CD, such as "Arere". If money is an issue, I recommend buying the DVD, which is more comprehensive and permits the viewer to watch the concert with English subtitles -- a useful tool for those of us who do not speak Portugese but would like to know what Ms. Sangalo is singing about.

5 out of 5 stars Off your feet.......2005-07-20

This cd will have you off your feet dancing! I like to listen to it while I clean the house, get's you moving! The only thing I didn't like was one of the songs that I wanted to hear wasn't on the cd. It's on the live performance of this cd though, with a young girl and guy duet.

Thoroughly professional, period. Brasil's Gershwin nicely done by a class act. Arrangements aren't always super, maybe lacking a tad of creativity, but, all-in-all, an absolute must to any collection! I'd give it 4.85 stars.

    5 out of 5 stars O melhor da MPB.......2004-03-27

Ainda hoje, as novas gerações o cultuam.

5 out of 5 stars Five stars because is history!.......2004-03-03

Buenos Aires; 1976; I was 18 and for the first time on my own in the big city, when I first heard this album at a friend's home (I presume his parents had bought it). We listened to it endlessly and learned all the lyrics. It was my first encounter with Brazilian culture and in the context of the Argentine "dirty war," this joint concert, became an oasis of comradery and peotry. Indeed both, Chico and Caetano, have written some of the most beautiful and profound songs of MPB. The first, the offspring of an academic family, is a master of language and uses his skills to describe the quotidian joys and sorrows of the common man (and woman!) The second, no less talented, digs into the existencial dilemmas of the Brazilian people. With feminist undertones, in "Esse Cara" Caetano writes a first person love song in which a woman declares her love for "That Guy": "Ele é quem quer/ele é o homen/eu sou apenas uma mulher" (He is what he wants/he is the man/I'm just a woman.) For me, it was a delightful shock to listen the voice of a woman sung by a man! A year later he would surprise me again with the gay connotations of "Menino do Rio" and, sometime later, "Leaozinho." I wanted to be like them, live amid all that beauty and freedom and, less than twelve months later, my dream came true.

4 out of 5 stars Two Great Masters.......2002-08-03

Chico y Caetano. Caetano y Chico.

5 out of 5 stars Yes, the best brasilian live record ever!.......2001-01-03

In this CD you can find a truly piece of art, two of the finest musicians and songwriters came together (before i was even born...) to make pure poetry, so i thank them! Obrigado!

P.S. i specially recommend "voce não entende nada" and "cotidiano"

5 out of 5 stars Best Brazilian CD ever?.......2000-10-12

This CD is among the very best ever recorded in Brazil. Chico Buarque is Brazil's finest songwriter, and Caetano is not far behind. Together, they are incredible on this live recording. This is a true classic -- one that has stood the test of time.

Just a fun CD. Great music, all the best from Skank, and it is better live. Partida de futebol is especially good live. If you like Brazilian rock and especially if you like Skank, this is a good one for your collection.

5 out of 5 stars Very Very Good.......2004-07-20

Skank is one of the most popular pop bands of Brazil mixing together reggae and latin ska, and this CD of the LIVE in Ouro Preto presents 16 best big hits of the band more a previously unreleased song, "Acima do Sol". A little review of mine of the songs:
1 - Partida de Futebol (5/5): Presented in the 1998 World Soccer Cup, the song is about... soccer, indeed! Far better than its old version.
2 - Esmola (3/5): Cute and good to dance, that's all!
3 - Pacato Cidadao (5/5): One of my favourites, very good, but the older version is better.
4 - Jackie Tequila (5/5): Pure Reggae and Latin Ska, quiet and sweet, very good song.
5 - Acima do Sol(3/5): The only new song, it's good but not as than the others among the CD.
6 - Balada do Amor Inabalavel (4/5): Sweet and calming
7 - Tres Lados (5/5): Fascinating, far better than the very good old version, the best pop/rock of the band in the LIVE's presentation.
8 - Tao Seu (5/5): Very good, but ofuscated by the presence of "Tres Lados".
9 - Saidera (4/5): Very good, nice words (about the costume of people drinking -socially-)
10 - Resposta (5/5): Romantic song, calm and very very sweet. Very good, (although many didn't liked the changes in the band style in the CD that this music was presented, that was used to be more 'dancing'.)
11 - Te Ver (2/5): Good and sweet, not more.
12 - Estare Prendido en Tus Dedos (2/5)- More or less good, the old version was better.
13 - Tanto (5/5): Translation of "I Want You" of Bob Dylan, the first big hit of the band.
14 - Cancao Noturna (4/5): Good, nice, calm and in the same time, dancing. Far better than the old version.
15 - Ali (4/5): The same of above, love words again
16 - Garota Nacional (5/5): The biggest hit of the group was presented better than it was! Very dancing song.
17 - E Proibido Fumar (4/5)- Good and very dancing

If you like or are really interested in very good brazilian pop music, like many styles as reggae, pop, rock, dancing hits and calm songs and like LIVE albuns, really it is a very good and interesting album to have in your collection.

OK. We've all connected with Vinicius de Moraes on one level or another. An Aunt or Uncle, Grandpa, Mom or Dad, or an older brother or sister, someone turned us onto the Artist.

    Right?

But how many of us have a good solid Vinicius de Moraes CD collection?

It's time to retire our ancestor's old Greatest Hits.

I have looked through the Amazon Vinicius de Moraes CD headings and there are alot of titles to consider purchasing.

Tom Canta Vinicius: Ao Vivo is a nice way to honor Vinicius and Jobim by buying and ordering some welcomed new product.

I don't know about you, but intoning the name, Vinicius de Moraes, is a religious experience, the picture on the CD's front cover and the live recording border on holy.

Greatest Hits CD's have their place, but there's nothing like a tight knit group of family and friends singing and performing songs of deep significance or relevance.

I listen to Tom Canta Vinicius: Ao Vivo in the bathtub.

Light a candle for your loved ones. Honor your ancestry.

Honor the pretty person next to you. Leave some hot water for them!

Buy Vinicius de Moraes CD's for Birthdays, Weddings, and Anniversaries.

Drink the Philospher's Wine. Innoculate the Music Trade!

Tom Canta Vinicius: Ao Vivo is a good start.

I give it 5 Stars, a stellar performance.

5 out of 5 stars BEAUTIFUL SONGS -- WONDERFUL PERFORMANCES.......2002-04-17

I can basically only agree with the review below -- this is a well-recorded, lovingly performed tribute concert to Tom Jobim's long-time friend and collaborator Vincius de Moraes. Many of the classic songs are included in the program -- 'Insensatez', 'Felicidade', 'Samba de Carioca', 'Garota de Ipanema' (and the version here blows away ANY of the 'elevator music' interpretations you most likely have endured) -- and the participants are perfect, possibly the musicians most sympathetic to his music with whom the Master ever worked. The recording -- and live recordings are always a bit of a risk to the buyer -- is clear and quiet, the applause from the audience only audible between the tracks. This recording aptly captures Jobim's art -- and his love for it. It's a must-have for anyone who enjoys the best that Brazilian music has to offer -- his work is the pinnacle of the form.

The Morelenbaums -- Paula and Jacques, on vocals and cello, respecetively -- and Paolo Jobim, on guitar and vocals, are, of course, three-fourths of the incredible Quarteto Jobim-Morelenbaum, whose recording of a couple of years ago, dedicated to Tom Jobim's music, has become a modern classic in its own right. They are joined here by the fine work of Danilo Caymmi on flute and vocals. The support these wonderful musicians gently give to Tom's piano and vocals show their love and respect for this giant -- his contributions to modern music will, I feel certain, be eternally honored for their timeless beauty.

4 out of 5 stars A lovely and very pleasant live tribute by "Tom" Jobim.......2001-07-31

Recorded live in Brazil in 1990 and not released in the U.S. until now, "Tom Canta Vinicius" (translate "Tom Sings Vinicius") is Tom Jobim's tribute to his songwriting partner Vincinius de Moraes. While de Moraes was not nearly as famous as Mr. Jobim, his standing as a bossa nova original is secure, having helped pen several of the best-loved songs of that genre. Many of those were performed in this concert, including my favorite bossa tune, "Insensatez," one of the most beautiful songs of all time. Jobim was accompanied by his son Paulo, Danilo Caymmi and the Morelenbaums. In fact, Paula Morelenbaum sung most of the lead vocals - and did a magnificent job. Tom sang a few numbers alone or in duet with Paula, in his sometimes thin or fragile-sounding voice (but not really a problem, because you can feel his love for the songs). The sound quality for the recording is excellent - intimate and natural, like they're playing in your living room.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars An Extraordinary Meeting of Voice & Soul ... Ao Vivo.......2007-04-30

In an understated voice, Seu Jorge opens this concert promising that the main connection tonight is with the audience. The tone is humble, but not sentimental ... and then he announces "1967, Farofa Carioca"--the name his first band, years before Bowie & Zissou made him a star--and their song, Sao Gonca, propels his voice to show an extraordinary emotional range, nothing expected from his introductory words.

The gorgueos bossa of Problema Social follows, and Jorge again hits the measured intimacy the lyrics ask for--"If I could tweak my fate/I would be not a boy selling lemons/working at the street fair all day/to earn his bread ... If I could I would not be a social problem." The first half of this album is pure Seu Jorge, even more real and immersed in the music itself than in "Cru" which is to say a lot, he seems to relax in front of the public, be at ease. His hit Carolina proves that, relaxed never meant to be laid back.

Ana Carolina does not appear until the fifth track, "Comparsas," but when it does, you know she's here to blow you away. This happens unarguably in the duet's version of Damien Rice's The Blower's Daughter, renamed E Isso Ai in Portuguese, A song which was great in its original version--which, by the way, is clearly credited to Rice everywhere in the album--but is at least matched by Seu & Ana. Carolina kills here.

And this is just half of the album. Jorge offer his Brazilian form of Punk attitude through O Beat Do Beata and Chatterton adding some irony and rebel soul to the proceedings, while Carolina excels again in Pra Rua Me Levar and is simply amazing in Beatriz--half Maria Bethania, half Diana Krall--the classic Chico Buarque song about Dante's longing for his unreachable lover.

All in all, this is worth having. and hanving handy to listen to it a few times, specially if you're new to these people. The music will take you the rest of the way.

    4 out of 5 stars Muito Bom!.......2007-04-04

Listen, please ignore the review from the person who bought this album because he/she wanted listen to something Brazilian. If that is the case this person was better off buying a compilation of Samba or Forro music. His Brazilian friend made a great recommendation.

One thing this reviewer was right about is that they do a cover of Damien Rice's "The Blower's Daughter" and it's fantastic. Mr. Rice would be honored. As for not giving Rice credit for writing it, I'm not sure where that information came from but if the reviewer knew anything about Seu Jorge, he would have known that this artist covers Western pop music with a Brazilian spin.

Putting all of what I wrote aside, this is a lovely album and the songs are romantic and well played. In fact, the songs make this album perfect to listen to with a loved one--and with any luck--fall deeper.

    1 out of 5 stars WHAT A DISASTER!.......2007-03-28

I bought this CD in order of listening to something from Brazil. This is the worst thing I've ever listened in my life. And the bad thing is one information I had from friends of mine in Brazil, Both Ana and Seu Jorge have avoided to say during shows that the song "É isso ai" it's just a version (I GUESS COMPOSED BY AN ARTIST CALLED DAMIEN RICE), as if they were the composers, this is the worst thing one artist could do. They said that "DURING A TV PROGRAM CALLED "ALTAS HORAS", WHILE ANA WAS SINGING THIS SONG, APPEARED BELOW ON TV, THEIR NAMES, AS COMPOSERS. WHAT IS THAT, THE MOST OUTRAGEOUS THING TO DO, SIMPLY DON'T BUY IT, IT'S A DISASTER!
BUY TOM JOBIM THE MASTER FROM BRAZIL.

    5 out of 5 stars Amazing!!.......2007-02-17

I'm not the biggest fan of searching for imported CDs or anything, especially because sometimes they are like 50 plus dollars. However, this disc is a bargain. If you like Sue Jorge, I promise that you will love this album. When Sue and Ana team up, it's magic. All of the songs are great, high quality, and excellent live cuts. However, I think the bonus DVD is the best part about it. I am a Hi-Fi, home theater, surround sound nut, and hearing these guys playing in 5.1 DTS is just fantastic. Can't go wrong here, guaranteed!
