Angels from heaven.......2002-12-12
Hymn singing as it should be.......2002-01-17
The hymns and tunes selected are indeed among the best-loved works in English church music. "O God, our help in ages past," "Love Divine," "Eternal Father, strong to save," "Be thou my vision," "Guide me, O thou great Redeemer" and the eventide chestnuts "Abide with me" and "The day thou gavest" are all bound to be the most recognisable even to those who are not regular churchgoers. Some of the Victorian composers have immortalised the cream of their talent in such hymns as "The King of Love my shepherd is" and "O thou, who camest from above." Purcell's tune "Westminster Abbey" - extracted from his anthem "O God, thou art my God" and set to the words "Christ is made the sure foundation" - shows how a stroke of inspiration of long ago can survive endless musical change by being adapted and absorbed into hymnody. Another adapted work is Hubert Parry's hymn "O Praise ye the Lord," actually the final part of an extended anthem ("Hear my words, ye people") and is presented on this disc in its original form, making for an interesting and refreshing change to the repetitive verses of the rest of the collection. Completing the programme are settings that fall more definitely outside of the realms of congregational singing: the powerful "Kontakion of the Dead" to an ancient tune and harmonisation from Kiev; the moving Air from County Derry set to the verse "I would be true" for unaccompanied boys voices (as sung by these very choristers at the Funeral of Princess Diana in 1997); Martin Neary's little tune "Studland" written for the blessing "May the Grace of Christ our Saviour;" his lovely arrangement of Sebastian Temple's "Make me a channel of your peace" (also sung at the Diana funeral) is here as well. Each item is a gem in its own right.
In this performance, each gem is polished to a high standard. Contrast is effectively made by the use of subtly different forces for different verses - there is an appropriate use of boisterous tenors and basses in "O worship the King" at the verse "O tell of his might," and a plethora of soul-stirring unaccompanied verses, particularly in "Praise to the Holiest in the Height." (I would challenge anybody to find a more moving moment in hymnody, achieved with such utter simplicity, than the performance of "And in the garden secretly, and on the Cross on high, should teach his brethren, and inspire to suffer and to die" as it is on this disc.) This is not to say that Martin Baker's accompaniments are not another wonderful element in the performance: for instance, his clever doubling of the tune at a low octave in "Who would true valour see" for the words "No lion can him fright; he'll with a giant fight." On the subject of words, every single one is treated with care and attention to its meaning, individually and in context - the ensemble is finely honed and the enunciation is immaculate. Martin Neary draws every ounce of poetical significance from the words in these hymns, making real sense of them and allow them to speak as music, not simply as long lines of verse to get through as quickly as possible (which is often the problem arising with hymn singing in many churches today). As a finishing touch, several hymns have descants and alternative harmonisations, many of them supplied by Neary, who knows how to make them effective, stunning and highly original. An ensemble of trumpets and drums joins the Abbey Choir and organ for the performance of "All people that on earth do dwell" in the festive arrangement by Vaughan Williams - this is as stirring as many of the other hymns are moving.
This collection is a sample of hymnody that (in my humble opinion) far outweighs others I have encountered. There's a certain joy in listening to these performances - a joy that somehow remains fresh on repeated hearings. An inspired and inspirational programme: most warmly recommended!

Album Description
"Whoever It Was . . ." is award-winning Welsh singer-songwriter-humanitarian activist Martyn Joseph's first US-released CD since Epic's "Martyn Joseph" in 1995, and the 17th release of his 20-year career. Described by two of England's most influential music magazines as "one of acoustic music's most original voices" (Q Magazine) and as "an artist of enduring worth" (Mojo), Joseph left Sony/Epic after 5 highly produced Top 50 UK hits in the mid-'90s, but continued to record and release CDs steadily, eventually through his own British-based label, Pipe Records. For his first full-length new studio CD in five years, following several EPs for international social justice causes, Martyn recognized that he'd "made a number of political points on various projects in the last few years, and this record just began to form in a more reflective way." So rather than dwell on the specific, his themes here are universal - love and its bittersweet realities, the need for personal activism and faith despite the limitations of human nature - and winningly conveyed by his strong, yearning vocals and intimate acoustic accompaniment. Each of the eleven songs was recorded live in the studio by Martyn on vocals and acoustic guitar, then a little coloration - keyboards, a second guitar, cello, harmonica, occasional backing vocals - was sparingly added. With nine original songs (four of them co-written by longtime Joseph collaborator Stewart Henderson, a Liverpudlian poet), there is a unity of voice, lyrical outlook, and instrumental approach that links! each track into an emotionally satisfying and thought-provoking whole.
For a glimpse of the political side of Martyn's music, Appleseed has appended to this CD two tracks from one of his benefit EPs - "The Great American Novel," written in the '70s by Larry Norman, angrily laments the death of the American Dream, and "The Good in Me is Dead" is a Joseph original from the standpoint of a young Kosovan refugee looking for his family at the country's border.
Joseph, named "Male Solo Artist of the Year" in the 2004 Welsh Musical Awards, combines intelligence, passion and profundity in each of his songs, and his live performances (described by the Boston Globe as "a profound live experience") also display an extemporaneous, crowd-winning sense of humor.

Whoever It Was..........2004-03-21
Not a wasted moment on this album. It's that compelling...
Aside from the 2 bonus tracks at the end which aren't on the UK version, this is not as political as some of Martyn's albums. However, you can feel the emotion and energy behind every track. Martyn has a way of not only putting 1000% of himself behind every song, but he captures the gut reactions and feelings of his audience as well. This album is a must have for anyone who believes in music that reflects life, love, and politics...

Album Description
John Duke (1899-1984) is one of the acknowledged masters of the American art song. This release of twenty-three of his finest songs will afford lovers of vocal music the opportunity to discover Duke's little-known corpus. Comparison with the musical language of other notable American art song composers (Griffes, Loeffler, or Ives, for instance) reveals an unusually consistent and personal style throughout most of Duke's career, the composer venturing only slightly afield of a conventional tonal practice derived mostly from European music of the nineteenth century. Musical influences on his language, in fact, are almost entirely European; most of his songs have an accompanimental texture unmistakably his, continuing, in a way, the tradition of the German Lied, using poems in English.Duke often claimed, both in his writings and in conversation with colleagues, to have developed his art song style somewhat self-consciously after having studied in great detail the historical, poetical, and musical contexts of three previous genres exhibiting a marriage of music and poetry: the Elizabethan song, the nineteenth-century Lied and the French mélodie of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. His choice of poetry avoids almost completely the abstract in favor of the tried and true themes of love and mortality, themes that most composers have found the most suitable for musical treatment. Duke's music is taken very seriously by those who know his work intimately. After all, about how many American composers could it be said that all 265 songs have a natural feel for the voice, an elegantly matched pianistic accompaniment, a recognizable and personal style, and a musical language that never resorts to false syntax? It is easy to see why American singers love to sing his songs.
Customer Reviews:
A Generous Packet of Art Songs by American Composer John Duke.......2006-01-27
This fine recital by soprano Lauralyn Kolb, a former student of the highly regarded Howard Swan of Occidental College and a sought after oratorio soloist and recitalist, with pianist Tina Toglia is a study in musical intelligence. Kolb's soprano voice is beautifully focused and her communication of the texts ranging from ee cummings, Emily Dickinson, Elinor Wylie, Sarah Teasdale, Robert Frost, Richard Nickson, Mark Van Doren to James Joyce is pristine and warmly sensitive. Her collaboration with Toglia demonstrates the way musicians should approach the art song. There are many excellent songs in this collection that could be singled out, but the pleasure of the recital is that the variety selected by the artists is very satisfying for a survey of works by a relatively unknown (to the public) composer. Recommended. Grady Harp, January 06
