I really love this CD, is one of my favorites included in my collection of Kunzel recordings. It contains lots of hard to find music (Bill Conti's The Right Stuff) and also original material composed by musitians of the orchestra.

Horner Hatches A Cocoon.......2004-02-15
This is an interesting work from James Horner; one of the first in which he tries to touch the listener's feelings. He somewhat succeeds, especially if you get to hear tracks like 'Rose's Death', 'Returning To The Sea', 'First Tears', and 'Sad Goodbyes'.
There are also epic and mysterious moments when you hear 'Through The Window', 'The Lovemaking', and 'The Ascension'. Let's not forget that there are also nice and funny moments, especially when the music focuses on the elder characters on the movie -like 'Discovered In The Poolhouse' and 'The Boys Are Out', an excellent piece of music orchestrated by the late Billy May (of the "Batman" and "The Green Hornet" fame), an expert on jazz and that kind of music which was very popular in the 50s and 60s.
But the lowdown of this album is the action piece 'The Chase' because, in spite of being very well orchestrated (by John Williams' former orchestrator, the late Herbert Spencer), it contains a movement which is exactly the same as the one heard in 'Genesis Countdown' from "Star Trek II-The Wrath Of Khan". And hell, whose idea was it to include the Michael Sembello song 'Gravity' in the movie, and even in this soundtrack? Definitely bad taste.
In general, this is a good album that could have been better, and this is proof that James Horner always looks for ways to get to the right emotions, no matter how repetitive he gets.
Shallow, and derivative.......1999-09-01
Interesting hearing the inspiration for Silvestri's "Mac and Me," as well as several note-for-note precursors to "Titanic." It is not as much of a patchwork as I thought, and Horner manages to keep his 'references' to his three favorite composers: Khachaturian, Prokofiev, and himself. On the downside, the music has that unmistakably shallow JH sound. As one critic so aptly said, "It has a top, a bottom, and nothing between." Likewise, the "Star Trek" references are more than a bit much.
A must have for all music fans........1999-01-05
Definetely a CLASSIC Horner. This CD ranked in the top ten most sought after soundtracks and wasn't even available for under $200. until P.E.G. Records finally released it to the public for the regular CD price and with the original track listing.
In my opinion, the most beautiful score Horner has ever written(not necissarily the best but close.)
There are 7 themes!( some of them are sort of subthemes.)
The themes (particularly the main theme)are very sweeping melodies with a hint of sadness in each one. Track 3(The chase)is a very exiting and thematical at the same time while Rose's Death and Sad goodbies are sure to bring tears to your eyes. The best track is "First Tears", combining about three of the best themes including a dramatic swirling horn theme and the "Sad Goodbies/Rose's Death" theme all leading up to a beautiful climax of the main theme.
Those beautiful swirling horns that we've come to know Horner for(and which I mentioned earlier)also can be heard throughout the CD as a subtheme that gives the score a certain dramatic character.
This gorgeous piece of work is surpassed only by "Krull" and "Star Trek II" in my list of Horner favorites.
No music fan(especially of James Horner) can afford to miss this all time classic.

Late Bloomers - .......2007-07-10
I've been a fan of Guy Gerber ever since I sat up and noticed his releases through Diggers' Bedrock label.
This album really showcases the talent of Guy Gerber.
"State of Change" is my favourite track very hypnotic.
I recommend this album right from the very first listen.
Much more listenable than "From Here to the Sublime"
Play this at home when you are getting dinner ready. Pour yourself some wine and start chopping.

Another hard hitting techno mix in this now prolific series........2007-02-08
Other mix series usually swap DJ's for every other mix, or sometimes it's the same DJ on the first disc, and then a different one for every disc 2. However, Sven Väth has taken upon himself to contiually mix his own 2 disc set in his now long running Sound of the Season mix series. With number 7, he comes out with his trademark, heavy hitting techno for disc 1, then lightens it up slightly with some tech house on disc 2. He lets a lot of tracks play very long, like Audion's Mouth to Mouth (which is itself an epic track to begin with), and culminating disc 2 with the stunning Middle Eastern vibe track India in Me by Cobblestone Jazz.
If you're looking for more jarring techno from Sven, this is another weighty installment in his mix series. By the way, the cover on Amazon is wrong, and the back cover artwork shown here is really what the cover looks like. Also, Amazon lists Konstantin Raudive as the artist on track 4, but it's actually by an artist named Oliver Ho, who goes by the name Raudive, and has nothing to do with Konstantin. This is actually my least favorite track on either disc, as the distorted child's voice just makes for one annoying track, even though the musical portion of the track is strong. One last note, the CD has an error in that it lists the Trentemøller track as Nam Nam, when it's actually Killer Kat.

This is what I call music!.......2004-06-15
Usually I listen more to punk (which I love) and faster rock. But we all have those times in which we like to kick back and just relax a little and don't feel so angry all the time (lol). This is a great cd for such times. I've been a fan of K's Choice music since their 2nd album, Paradise in Me. Their music helped me through some of those teenage troublesome moments we've all had and so they have a very special place in my life. I was lucky enough to see them perform live twice (weeeeeeeeeeeee!) and so I decided to make this review just to get a chance to praise them a bit more :D and along the way, who knows, persuade some of you to add an amazing cd to your collection. I just decided to make my review to Cocoon Crash given that its my favorite of their 4 albums.
Where should I start? This album is just everything a music lover could wish. It has your faster songs, it has your slower, more peaceful songs, every single one with amazing lyrics that have a strong meaning and appeal to you. "Everything for free" and "Hide" are perhaps the faster songs, but it's impossible to be indiferent to tracks like "Quiet little place", "20.000 seconds" and "God in my bed". I really don't know how to explain it, but this songs just reach within you and take a hold of your heart and make you feel exactly like what the song states. Sarah Bettens voice is extraordinary, the rest of the band is extremely gifted to, they're just one of the best bands I've ever heard and this is (in my opinion, of course) their best cd. So if you want to get started in K's Choice universe, why not give this cd a try? I trust you won't regret it. It's worth every dollar (and more). So get up off of that chair and go buy this!!!
Amazing.......2003-05-12
I define it as...AMAZING.With such musics like "Everything for free" and "Believe", this is one of that rare albums that simply worth the money you spend. In fact, i consider all musics of this album rich and beautiful, they have soul, and pretty and soft harmony that can cause such different feelings...Sarah's voice is magnificient, and fills just the right way on the musics. You'll know all this when you hear it,believe me,the money you'll spend will be perfectly spended.BUY IT NOW!!!
My choice!!.......2002-12-21
K's Choice is quite a phenomenom over here with a lot of fans, including me. This is in my eyes their strongest album so far. They've found a nice balance on this album between faster tracks and slower tracks. Some of their other albums contain in my eyes too many slow tracks, making one feel a bit depressed. This one is different. "Believe", the number 1 hit "everything for free", "too many happy faces" and "hide" are the faster tracks and my favourites. the special voice of Sarah Bettens never bores and is even somewhat relaxing. Calm, yet powerful. This is one of the first albums I bought and still one of the albums I most listen to. If you're into (soft)rock, but don't want a CD full of the same kind of songs this is an album for you.
Very, very close........2002-11-18
i first heard this album in belgium breifly and loved what i heard, so is soon as i returned to the states i bought it, continuing my search for good 'chick-rock'. The opening track is awesome, but as the album goes on, the songs get more generic and less interesting. At times it seems that they sacrifice the melody lines for the lyrics, which they write very articulately. they rhyme every line too- something not done that much anymore (for better or for worse). They do however experiment with different kinds of chord progressions on this album, which Sarah delivers very well. Her voice is unique though, kind of smoky and rich. With a few exceptions (tracks 1-4), the album is fairly repetetive guitar driven pop . .just. . . GOOD pop. (I think they could be huge in America if the word got out.) Basicly, it makes great background music or car music, but it would be boring to listen to alone.
This album is a truly brilliant rare gem........2002-10-08
I went to work in Paris a few years ago and when I arrived at the hotel, I turned on M6 (France's MTV equivalent) and I saw the video of Everything For Free and heard K's Choice for the first time. I was glued to the set until the end of the song and then went out to buy the record. There's not a bad track on this record. Fantastic lyrics and Sarah's voice is amazing....great character and depth to it. Great production by Gil Norton (hi Gil!). It disgusts me that their USA label, Sony, couldn't make this the multi-million selling album that it deserved to be. The band who should be very proud of this record. I feel for you guys.

High energy minimal set, still fresh sounding today........2007-01-14
I picked this up recently expecting to maybe hear it as a little weaker, or dated, compared to all the new, fresh minimal techno that has arrived on the electronic scene in the past year or two, but what I found was a mix that can easily hold it's own with any '06 or even new '07 mix coming out right now. Ricardo peppers us with high energy techno and tech house from start to finish, with a lot of tracks, a lot of great melodies, and a ton of energy. It's much faster paced stuff than the minimal he is use to putting out lately, and you may be as suprised as I was to hear something this good, especially since rumour has it that he is a much better producer and creator of music than he is a mixer. What I love is that he is able to pack in a walloping 22 tracks, yet you don't feel cheated at the short length of some of them, due to the frantic pace of the BPM's in these tracks. This is a stark contrast to the long, drawn out 10-15 minute tracks he loves to create.
A much better mix than his Green and Blue CD with Loco Dice from late 2005. Don't expect to hear an old dud from way back in '03 because this is as hot as anything out here right now.
Excelente !.......2004-07-16
Hola, este album es una muy buena muestra de lo que es minimal house, desde que empieza es bueno y las mezclas son cada vez mejores, pero es un disco dificil de comprender.
Lo recomiendo 100%
Must have.......2004-04-27
Villalobos has clearly arrived. You can tell by the number of his own tracks that appear in many big DJ compilations these days -- and not just of the "minimal" variety. "Taka Taka" is Villalobos's latest mixed recording. He doesn't just succeed with this offering: every track has something to give, and the collection simply gets better and better. At one point early on this CD was impossible to get, as the label greatly underestimated interest in it. Grab it while you can.

Gospel Jazz at its FINEST!!!!!!!.......2006-05-22
I LOVE this cd!!
I'm now getting into Gospel Jazz because I did't know it existed before. I love the flow of the cd. Its pure Jazz with the anointing of God flowing thru the soulful voice and deep lyrics. Its the first cd i've bought in a while that 90% of the songs are in heavy rotation. My fav on the cd is Canvas of Life. Every song on the cd is worth listening to.
I can't believe I never knew she existed until recently. I would love to know if she plans to do any upcoming projects.
If you want pure jazz with purpose then give this cd a try you won't regret it.
A Gospel Must-Have who loves Jazz, R&B, and Neo-Soul.......2004-12-29
This is highly recommended for gospel or neo-soul lovers alike who loves the sound of Erykah Badu, Jill Scott, Angie Stone, Alicia Keys, The Roots, Common, etc. Especially I've seen 'em at our church in Norcross where they did sound good performing @ a gospel conference. I wish Joye B Moore the best luck of their career and look forward of hearing from them one day.
Bundle of Joye.......2004-05-07
There are times throughout The Cocoon when you'd think that a young Sarah Vaughan jumped back in the studio, and teamed with Erykah Badu. Jazz lovers will marvel to at Choose Ye This Day, which is my favorite. This is my new American Express... I never leave home without it!
Neo-Soul music lovers who also love gospel.......2004-03-28
Heard her music on satellite TV, went to the computer to find it. If your into Maysa, Jill Scott, Rhian Benson but need your spirit fed, this is a great CD to have in your collection. Put it on random in your changer sit back and enjoy!
Gospel with a Neo-Soul, Jazz flavor.......2004-03-10
I was first introduced to Joye B. Moore while visiting family in Virginia. It was playing on the gospel radio station there. The song was "Canvas of Life", which has a jazzy feel to it. Unfortuntely, we do not have any "real" gospel radio stations in NY Metro area. Which to me is mindblowing since this area is a major source for entertainment, etc. As a lover of Gospel, Neo-soul and Smooth Jazz, I was a little disappointed that I could not find this CD in my local music stores. I finally purchased it online and I am glad to say that I was not disappointed in the least. If you like gospel, but also enjoy the flavor of neo-soul or jazz, I believe you will like Joye B. Moore. It is a wonderful way for those of us who love this type of music to not have to go to the secular world to get it. This CD is gound breaking for the gospel music. I wish Joye much success with her music ministry.

Expecting More- Getting Less.......2006-03-16
The sound quality is excellent. The choice in music is disappointing. I can name FOUR Horner movie scores or background music that is breath-taking enough that they should have merited inclusion (but alas were not recorded here).
I don't know the dates when these music pieces were released, but it could have been within a couple of years apart. Why? Because this collection has a few tracks that sound VERY SIMILAR. Hence, this CD does NOT fully explore the extent of this great composer's talent.
nice sampler of Horner's work.......2005-08-15
I had most of these tracks on other CDs, but this is a good sampler of Mr. Horners career on a single CD. There are some tracks which are from Original soundtracks in the Varese back catalogue, but most of hte tracks are re-recorded by the Royal Sottish National and Seattle Symphony Orchestras conducted by Cliff Eidelman, Joel McNeeley and John Debney. Also check out Heart of the Ocean (Sonic Images) and Titanic: Essential James Horner Collection (Silva America) for other overviews on Mr. Horner's career.
James Horner as Best Movie Composer.......2000-02-05
To say that James Horner is the most talented soundtrack composer would be an understatement. To my count he has written more than 10 scores. The score for Titanic is as exciting as it is relaxing. This soundtrack is so well made, that I bought the second one! Like the movie, each peice on the soundtrack builds up to the climax. If I had it in front of me, I would be sure to give specific examples, but unfortunetly, I don't. However, I will say that the peice, Rose, which I believe is #4, captures the true meanig of this outstanding movie, and therefore proves how well a composer James Horner has proven to be.
James Horner and John Williams are the best!!.......1999-04-08
At one time I belived the one and only great modern day film composer was John Williams, this album proved me wrong. James Horner, to me is still not as good as John Williams, but dangerously close. Horner in this album has basically summed up sum of his gratest songs ever written. The greatest song in this album is either Star Trek 2: The Wrath of Kahn End Titles, the Courage under Fire Theme, or Apollo 13 (The Launch). Some other honorable mentions include Aliens (Futile Escape), Titanic(Southampton,Rose , Take Her to Sea Mr. Murdoch, and Braveheart's End Credits, and Cocoon: The Return (Returning Home). Mr. Horner has done a fabulous job in expressing emotion almost as good as John Wiliiams. These 13 collabarations dsisplay emotions such as hope, fright, compassion, and courage. This albums only problem's were the fact it left out the music of some other of Horner's best work(Land Before Time, Glory, and An American Tale). The album ignored Horner's "Rock" titles which include Red Heat, Commando, and Gorky Park. This has to be one of the must buy's of the year. Two Very Honest Thumbs Up For James Horner and Royal Scottish National Orchestra and Chorus.
James Horner joins John Williams as the 2 greatest composers.......1999-04-07
I have thought John Williams was the number one film composer, but now I think he has met his match (Williams is still number 1). James Horner can display different emotions in all of his music. From the martial tone of Courage Under Fire (one of my favorites) to the mystical feeling of Casper and Cocoon: The Return. There is heart pounding Futile Chase from Aliens, and of course the heart wrenching melodies of Titanic. Braveheart gives you the tone of Scottish (the bagpipes, you can't miss them) victory. Both Brainstorm and Once Around, to me, give the feeling of hope. How do you forget the feeling of sucess in Apollo 13 or the intergalactic victory in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Kahn. This is the perfect album if you want to hear just the great songs. Horner brings out the true emotion in films just the same way that John Williams does. The only change I would make is to add a couple songs from Land Before Time in this album. Those songs would put this album to a 5. Two Thumbs Up!

Customer Reviews:
Exceptionally Good.......2007-01-18
...sometimes you find an album that you play over and over again but it never gets boring, the more you listen to it the better it gets, you hear more details and wonder - how the f* can you mix THAT live?
_CD1 by Loco Dice - is a solid mix from begining to end, mixed very well - each track flows into next one smootly. I would call it a journey.
_CD2 by Ricardo Villalobos - good too, except the last track, which should not be there because the one before it sounds like it finishes the CD. First 3 tracks are brilliant.
Thanks to technology both CDs sound extra crisp, sounds are deep and full, basses are strongly enriched - you notice that right eway.
People are screaming on the background from time to time, which adds proper mood.
Highly recomended.
Excellent!.......2006-09-29
Wow.. Loco Dice and Ricardo Villalobos on two cds. As soon as I saw that i placed the order. The cover doesn't look very appealing though. CD 1(LOCO DICE) is straight up funky while CD 2 (RICARDO VILLALOBOS) is more spacey and cerebral. I love the way cd2 begins, it just sets the mood for the entire cd, deep and quirky. CD 1 is so groovy, tracks like funky voodoo mama and Perry Rodhan just blew my mind. I wish i wouldve been at that festival.
