Two-and-a-half hours of bliss.......2007-04-04

This may be the best money I've ever spent. I got 2-1/2 hours of bliss for less than what I'd usually pay for one CD -- and you know how it is with music. You buy an album because of a song or two that you love, and you find that you like maybe half the songs on it. There's not a single selection in this one that I would've left out. It includes Joaquin Rodrigo's Concierto de Aranjuez, performed by Pepe Romero on the guitar with the Acadamy of St. Martin in the Fields. I needed to replace my old LP recording of that. But I also get 30 other classical compositions and traditional Spanish pieces, each special in its own way.

Have you ever heard music that you wanted to last forever, maybe even to dive inside and live there for a while, immersing yourself in sound? That's how I feel about this collection. The only problem I have with it is that I bought it thinking it might be nice to listen to while I write. Not so. It's terrible for that. I'll sit with my hands poised above the laptop keyboard, assuring myself I'll get some work done while I listen. The music takes hold and carries me away.

I'm not expert at describing this or any type of music. I just know what I love. You might too, if you enjoy classical or Spanish guitar -- unless you have absurd expectations about combining listening with work.

This CD for me was a waste of money. Its just not what i thought it would be. Others may enjoy it but for me..it wasnt what i was hoping to hear.

Essential Guitar..........2005-07-26

Up until this collection, I'd never heard the "Cavatina" played in the Deer Hunter movie. After hearing it, I could play it all day and not tire of it! It moves me that much, considering that it's almost "not" a classical guitar selection. The rest of the music is first rate! Excellent playing, but the "Cavatina..."
Buy it and enjoy!!!!

Lives up to its Name!.......2005-06-10

If you only bought this double CD set, you'd have a good starter collection of classical guitar music. It includes most of the standards, as well as rarer pieces. In addition to the many solo pieces, there are several excerpts from orchestral works, with Rodrigo's indispensible Adagio from "Concierto de Aranjuez" topping the list. There are also several flamenco numbers included, complete with heel taps and castanets.

The recording quality is uniformly good, even on the tracks by Segovia. I don't know if they were remastered or recorded late in his career, but they're free of the surface noise present in so many of his recordings. The set clocks in at a generous 2 1/2 hours - one of the greatest deals in instrumental music; this is not a "bargain" quality set. Listen to the samples online - great stuff.

My only mild criticism is in the marketing. The advertising features John Williams and Julian Bream. Each contributes exactly one track. I would have enjoyed more pieces by them for stylistic comparison. But the less well-known (at least to guitar music neophytes like me) artists are every bit as good, and I intend to obtain more of their work.

A wonderful journey.......2006-02-17

The guitar performance is as good as it gets. Every track could have been recorded as a solo performance and worked very well. The percussion and saxophone enrich the context and move the performance into something more than just music. After listening you feel like you've just enjoyed something wonderful and at the same time you've been educated without realizing it! After listening you understand something about Latin American music that you didn't before.

my introduction to the classical guitar technique.......2005-05-22

The Journey to the Amazon does just what the title suggests, taking you on an melodious adventure of guitar and local instruments and rhythms. This disc was my introduction to the sound of a classical guitar, and I found that the path Sharon Isbin took from more classical repertoire suited her style well. I may not have liked the sound of classical guitar at all if I had first listened to it in a more traditional genre.

Mesmerizing!!.......2004-02-29

This CD was my first exposure to Sharon Isbin, and I am absolutely mesmerized by it!! The music is beautiful, lyrical and moving. You can close your eyes and feel transported to a lovely other-worldly place full of graceful Latin/Brazilian rhythms.

Beyond beautiful, a wonderful work.......2003-09-08

This recording was one of my early exposures to Sharon Isbin on CD. I had the pleasure of experiencing her live performance prior to the purchase of this CD. As a fan of heavier guitar music, (i.e. Steve Vai and Eric Johnson), I never believed I would enjoy a classical guitarist. I was so completely moved by the performance Ms. Isbin gives on this CD, that I promptly purchased "Dreams of a World" and most recently "Baroque Favorites for Guitar". I highly recommend this CD if you want to hear a guitarist whose work defies traditional categorization. I give it 10 stars! Please try to see Ms. Isbin live in recital if she comes to your area; you will experience a remarkable performance.

I had the good fortune of hearing these performers live and relished every moment. Rarely does a CD live up to a live performance, but this is one that does and more. A must buy!!

Duo guitarists Harris Becker and Pasquale Bianculli have long performed under the name "Guitar x2," bringing an attractive repertoire to audiences throughout the NYC area. In Catgut Flambo, recorded in 1998 by MSR founder Gregory Squires at SUNY Purchase, they bring it all together in an irresistible recital ranging from the Baroque to contemporary Brazilian jazz. The stylish, elegant playing of these artists is bound to win friends for this music wherever there are listeners who relish the rare and beautiful.

The Baroque and early 19th century repertoire are represented by the gaiety of Partita in D Major by Georg Philipp Telemann and L'Encouragement by Fernando Sor. Two transcriptions from the piano music of Enrique Granados (1867-1916), the "Intermedio" from Goyescas and Spanish Dance No. 2, subtitled Oriental and inspired by the Moorish tradition, reveal the music of Spain at its most sublime.

The latter half of the recital is devoted to music of, and inspired by, the rich culture of modern day Brazil, as revealed in works by three natives of São Paulo - Sergio Assad, Celso Machado, and Paulo Bellinati - and an Americano, Howard Rovics, whose Impressões do Brasil (Impressions of Brazil), written for Guitar x2, receives its recording premiere. You've got to like the sheer rhythmic drive of Assad's "Pinote" from Tres Cenas Brasileiras (Three Brazilian Scenes), while Bellinati's "Jongo" is enjoyable for its jazz harmonics and the improvised percussive drumming that it calls forth from these performers.

The three Machado selections range from colorful and infectiously rhythmic pieces with the titles Bolinhas de Queijo (little balls of cheese) and Xarango do Vòvó (my grandfather's jalopy) to Imagens do Nordeste which captures the beauty, mystery and sense of danger of the Amazon region. Rovics' moody Impressions of Brazil, based on authentic themes from Brazilian popular music, is an attractive suite that pays tribute to a land whose musical culture possesses seemingly endless vitality.

Modern Brazilian rock.......2002-12-24

Funky rock with a danceable groove on many tracks... Someone who reads my Brazilian music website had written me to recommend Gadelha's work, comparing her to similar artists such as Fernanda Abreu and Ana Carolina, and although Gadelha's production values aren't as slick as those major label gals, I think the reader hit the nail on the head. The electric modern rock guitars may be a little over-obvious at times, but this is certainly a different sound for Brazilian pop, and several songs are pretty good. Worth checking out...
