Editorial Reviews
In the late '60s a duo developed their act from the embers of the Spencer Davis Group, where they'd had their own spot during the middle of shows. Multi-keyboardist Eddie Hardin had gelled with Jazz drummer turned R&B for the sake of the SDG, Pete York to form the world's smallest big band. Like contemporaries Colosseum, Hardin & York's jazz inflected prog met with huge critical and commercial favor in Europe, especially Germany where they regularly sold out 15,000 seat venues. Their debut LP Tomorrow Today was so 'out there' its front cover design won prestigious art awards in New York. The cover artist obviously so pleased with himself he omitted to put the music artists name on the front! Reviewers called it a cross between Procol Harum and Traffic, to which we would add The Nice. Released on the decidedly un-prog Bell label it did nothing in the UK, but did chart in Europe. RPM. 2005.

The term "middle of the road" was virtually invented for Kenny Loggins, whose brand of plain and pleasant pop/rock has always managed to find a place on the charts. This 15-song set has most of the hits you'll need, including the soundtrack singles ("I'm Alright," "Danger Zone," "Footloose") and the duets with Stevie Nicks and Steve Perry. One thing is for sure: the man certainly knows a good hook when he hears it. --Marc GreilsamerCustomer Reviews:

Add to that the release from the tension of battling with his homey (they barely made it through their Oakland gig)with the sheer joy of finding a songwriter/solid-phat player like Clark, and Cyko Myko Muir was set free! He wrote focused thematic lyrics that finally achieved the urban balance between punk bark and in-the-pocket smooth rap (witness the outro/vamp on "Trip to ...")he had been looking for.
Rocky George(the most underrated lead player in rock) was finally completely comfortable, and had some meaty hooks to launch from and soar. Rythym section locked tight... man I had no idea when I picked it up that day in '87.
I got home, was busy with work on my own label, was about to go to bed... "Let me just check this out for a second" - my curiosity piqued. Holy Cats! Next thing you know I was WIDE awake, volume up, stomping around my room, wrecking s**t! As if I neede proof, caught them at the ensuing support show and it was MAYHEM. And that's just about what you want... truly great moments in Rock, better yet Punk Rock!

A THRASH METAL ADVENTURE, MY ALL TIME FAVORITE ALBUM !.......2006-06-05
Filled with very complex songwriting and sometimes simple but blatantly catchy riffs. Also a very serious album dealing with topics such as : taking psychedelic drugs, suicide, severe depression, hearing auditory hallicinations and more. The band plays at a reasonably fast pace while throwing out bursts of energy and emotion, it really feels 3 dimensional. At a few points, this album slows down a bit but never gets dull. It demands your absolute attention and creates a mellow atmosphere in your conscious. This is one of those albums that sounds so great after every spin that youll be sure to pop it in again whenever you want to just relax.
I gotta admit, the first time I listened to this album I wasn't as impressed as everyone hyped it up to be. After time I began to feel the music proving its worth to me. I realized that is was never hyped at all, its very underrated if anything! I began to see the real message they were portraying and the feelings about it just deepen the more you pay attention. Its like falling in love with it....... kinda.
I think to really appreciate this album you should do some research on some of the lyrics and topics, that is, if you dont know what they are. for example: audio/visual hallucinations, lucid dreams, altered states of mind, depression, psychedelic drugs (mushrooms, salvia divinorum, lsd, etc.) Only to understand the music better.

Though Dwight Yoakam is tagged with a well-deserved (and in his case complimentary) "outsider" label, he is, ironically, one of country music's most accessible artists. Tomorrow's Sounds Today, his follow-up to the wonderful, acoustic-only Dwightyoakamacoustic.net, is proof. While it may be difficult to think of Yoakam as accessible--his music and persona are brash, cocky throwbacks to the days when slightly dangerous country artists actually did fall off their barstools--he has become so adept at incorporating a broad palate of influences that music fans of many stripes feel comfortable with the Kentucky cowboy. On Tomorrow's Sounds Today, Yoakam again reaches to hard-driving, old-school, honky-tonk country as the main ingredient while leavening the mix with jolting shots of rockabilly, Tex-Mex shuffle, and ain't-love-heartbreakin' sentiment. Yoakam's primary influence, Buck Owens, guests on three tracks, "The Sad Side of Town", "I Was There" (featuring Pete Anderson's growling guitar work), and "Alright, I'm Wrong," which showcases the accordion of Flaco Jimenez. Elsewhere, Yoakam delivers rocking country backbeats, memorable hooks, dusty down-home waltzes in full drawl, even a cover of Cheap Trick's "I Want You to Want Me." As usual, Yoakam's impeccable band is up to the task, handling the songs with ease while not sacrificing a single volt of electricity. --S. DudaCustomer Reviews:

"Tomorrow's Sounds Today".......2004-12-18
Take just one listen and you'll see that Dwight Yoakam is not like any of his contemporary country acts. "Tomorrow's Sounds Today" is a collection of 14 exceptionally unique, beautifully presented, and well-written songs. As a whole, the CD is delightfully entertaining and well textured with a varied selection of material, almost all of which was written by the man himself.
Some of my favorites on this CD are "Free to Go" (which focuses on the uncertain nature of love), "Dreams of Clay" (a beautifully written song about love gone astray), and "Heartaches Are Free" (which is reminiscent of the classic Hank Williams.) Over all, I'd recommend this CD for anyone who likes real country music that has a bit of an alternative twist.
Entusiastic "real" country that refuses to dissapoint.......2004-04-20
Riding on the strength of these tunes, this album shines as bright as a southern star. While it's safe to say that Yoakam has once again spent some time writing from a room at the Heartbreak Hotel, with songs such as "Time Spent Missing You," "A Place To Cry," and the exceptional "Dreams of Clay," it is also quite obvious that he still possesses his uncanny ability to make it sound hip to be broken-hearted. Armed with his trademark country croon, Yoakam trots through an album that revisits influences ranging from Buck Owens (of which he duets on the album's closing bonus cuts) to Elvis to Cheap Trick, with a cover version of their age old hit "I Want You To Want Me." Basically, there is a gem of some sort here for most anyone. Although not quite a seminal D.W. recording, this one still concludes making you feel pretty cool to be blue.

Al Jarreau has one of music's great voices, a blend of silky highs and a warmly resonant midrange that's absolutely his own, and he's used it to great effect in the past with hits like "After All" and "We're in This Love Together." On his first studio recording since 1994's Tenderness, Jarreau continues to blur the lines between R&B, jazz, and pop. His skill with romantic ballads is reinforced from the outset with "Just to Be Loved" and "Let Me Love You," and the theme continues later in a soaring duet with Vanessa Williams on "God's Gift to the World." But Jarreau is never stuck in one groove. There are great funk tracks here, like the insinuating "In My Music" and "It's How You Say It," a slow groove that gives full play to his different voices. His jazz roots are apparent, too. The title track is a party of explosive Afro-Cuban beats, and "Something That You Said" is a vocal transformation of Weather Report's classic "A Remark You Made," with added details from Rick Braun's trumpet. The last track, "Puddit," is Jarreau at his most playful, an unaccompanied rendition of a Joe Sample tune with the singer clapping time to his own witty lyrics. Tomorrow Today is a perfect balance of Jarreau's soulful depths and wide-ranging creativity. --Adam RainsCustomer Reviews:
Today I'm Going Yesterday.......2007-05-21
Flame opens the album. If I could order people to listen to music..I know who I'd like to hear this one. But I can't order anyone to do anything...not even listen. 'Foolish hearts, stay the same, dance in time.' To me this opens with the flame to be sure....nice tune. To sing.
As a teacher , mom...I think God's Gift To the World is a welcome a child to our world pop ballad...so I use it going to work sometimes. To get ready to think with a whole heart with kids. especially days I'm losing my love.... I had a teacher friend mock it years ago...and I can see that. I'm so fond of this music it is like many of my feelings, completely open to attack for lack of elan...too true.. You have to excuse my openly pop connect. I often ..just sing to be happier.
Last Night, kind of a love tune, yeah. I like that too.
Too pop for my friend. Let Me Love You....hold this hand right now....oh it's a goodbye. Sail away, changes, losses, this album.
This is a ballady group.Too pop for some, Jarreau.. Love tunes...I enjoyed that concert to my bones marrow...a very affectionate night in my past. Took Sylvia my daughter and I remember being outside on a beautiful night. Lovely.Moon light. Jarreau seems to have evolved to the place of living love.
My favorite is Something That You Said....words are tumbling out, associations, words bobbling, comfort, feelings, taking you just around..here and there..through the inner spaces of our wandering minds, dreamy, what he does the best...he's a poet. He's a poet. And I love to wander in this tune. I'm going to think of people and places, Paris and days gone.
My sweet friends. Listen..to this one. Just this one is enough.

WHERE HAS THE OLD AL GONE?.......2002-04-16
Let me start by saying that I've been in love with Al Jarreaus music from the release of "All Fly Home." I had never heard of him, but once I got the album, it was all I wanted to hear. He was fresh, original, engertic, unbound, creative, innovative and well--he could sing as well as he could scat-- perfect! I went on to discover other Al Jarreau treasures, top of the list was "Live In Europe."
Beyond his paramount vocal abilities, his songs drew me in. There was the bittersweet hopeful determination of "We Got By", the raw unfetted joy of "Could You Beleive?" the fast paced in your face of "You Don't See Me", the sweet optimism of "Look To The Rainbow". The painful hurt of "A Rhyme" (This Time), the snatch you up and never let you go of "Never Givin' Up" (This Time), the skillful arrangement and power of "Spain" (This Time) and then the 80's came, "Moonlighting" was on TV and Al was singing the theme song. "Breaking Away" signaling a new direction for Jarreau and it has been hit and miss for me since. It wasn't until he released "T is for Tenderness" was I able to sit back and enjoy a whole cd from start to finish.
When I heard about a new release (Tomorrow Today), I was eager and excited about getting it. Well, I got it, had it and haven't played it more than three times in two years (unheard of for any Al Jarreau album, even for his least bests like High Crime).
Maybe I'm getting old. Maybe I don't have the tolerance for so-so music, I don't know. But I do know that I want the Al that I came to love back in the 70's and with each release, I hope I get it. With this one I didn't...

Montreal's Mobile released their debut disc, Tomorrow Starts Today at exactly the best and worst possible time; the Francophone five-piece premiered when the world's attention was drawn to their hometown's music scene. At the same time, the group's '80s-affected rock-meets-new-wave sound was all the rage in indie music circles. Truth is, Mobile is much more than a flash in the pan, and their passionately sung, crisply-performed melodies deserve to rise well above the hype. For many, "Montreal Calling" will be the first introduction to the band; the track's catchy chorus makes you swear that you're listening to a Killers or Franz Ferdinand cut. It might possibly remain their biggest single, but this is not a one-hit wonder band; there is much more depth on their debut than one might expect. "See Right Through Me" and "Scars" shine on a number of levels, from the implosive instrumentation to frontman Mat Joly's emotive vocals; there is a grain of indefinable "something" in those two songs and beyond that contain the kind of fire a young Bono and company did back on U2's own first CD, Boy. "How Can I Be Saved" and disc closer "Bleeding Words" are also noteworthy, both emo-rock mini-symphonies that take listeners on multi-plateau sonic journeys. The power shown by these boys is well beyond their experience--a testament to the three years the group spent writing and rehearsing before stepping out to perform live--making this a disc likely to grow on you with repeated listens. --Denise SheppardCustomer Reviews:
Tomorrow starts with Mobile.......2006-10-03
The best song on this album is "See Right Through Me". It is very closely followed by the second and third best songs of this CD which are "Scars" and "Bleeding Words". The sound arrangements on these 3 songs, the vocals, the lyrics are great but the sheer emotion and power that these songs exude are mesmerising. It's refreshing to see something new yet something so good. It has been a long time.
Other songs that are noteworthy : "Out of my head", "Montreal Calling", "Looking Out" and "Lovedrug". Also good songs are "New York minute", "Dusting Down the Stars" and "How Can I be saved".
The weakest songs of the album are "Hands tied" and "Tomorrow starts today".
This band is far from being an imitation of the Killers or any band out there. They do resemble a little bit a mixture of the latter, Jimmy Eat World and Dishwalla (the last two albums) but they have their own sound and that is perfectly evident by their 3 best songs.
Mobile is here to stay for sure. I'm glad I got to listen to this album and to have discovered it. They have a bright future. Great band. Superb album. Way to go Mobile.
Musicdrug.......2006-08-09
Mobile's songs have different genres for each one, and everyone's opinion differs on what songs are better, and which one's aren't, but there is at least one song for almost everyong.
The first song on the CD, Hands Tied, is personally not one of my favourites compared to the other songs on the CD, and seems to start off like a tropicana orange juice commercial. The lyrics aren't as great as some of the other songs. Yet, even though it seems to be somewhat annoying, it's very catchy.
There next song, New York Minute, has powerful lyrics, and a powerful tune. Plus it seems to start and end like a news broadcast, which definately catches attention.
Out of My Head is the closest you can get to a dance song on this CD. It has been Mobile's biggest single, and so they should havd waited longer before releasing See Right Through Me, which hasn't had much air tiem at all because Out of My Head is stil on the charts. Out of My Head is so popular it even has it's own dance video remix.
Montreal Calling is a great song, but it always reminds me of The Trews a bit. Yet once it gets to it's course it makes up for it.
See Right Through Me and Scars are the songs that you generally daze out on. They have a beautiful tune, and it's entrancing.
Dusting Down the Stars is a slower song, with metaphors and pain in the lyrics.
Lookin' Out, Tomorrow Starts Today and How Can I Be Saved are very good songs that will catch your attention with powerful guitar cords and lyrics that should not be skipped over.
Lovedrug and Bleeding Words are songs where you should learn the lyrics to so you aren't singing what you think the lyrics are. They are darker songs of the album, and they even refer to some of the earlier songs on this CD, giving the impression of a story that's gone dark, but the lyrics 'say' freedom...
Over all the album is worth a good listen to, and those who listen to it more than once will be able to listen to it for a long time.
Powerfully Refreshing.......2006-05-13
Their genre, albeit hard to classify as it is a mixture of rock, pop, new wave, and emo, is rapidly gaining popularity in today's mainstream scene. This helps them and hinders them at the same time. For one, it increases their exposure, but on the other hand, you might overlook this band simply because there are so many others out there. Others such as fellow Montreal band 'The Arcade Fire'.
However, if one takes time to sit and listen, you'll come away with a pretty distinct audio experience.
From easy ballads to head-shaking beats, this album delivers on all fronts.
"New York Minute", "Out of my Head", and "Tomorrow Starts Today" are the first songs you'll probably take note of, as they are the songs that one can rock out to, and they are great at doing so. With strong riffs and harder vocals, these songs tend to grab more immediate attention. "Tomorrow Starts Today" leads the pack, though, with it's catchy chorus and solid beat.
"Lookin' Out" is also in among the top songs of the album. It's somewhat of a ballad, but it has more of an edge to it, and along with its smooth piano, I tend to prefer it over the other truer ballads listed below.
"Scars" and "Dusting Down the Stars" make up the great ballads of the album. "Scars" wins this contest though. It is a considerably deep song and features probably the most effective vocals in the album.
"See Right Through Me", however, is the highlight of the album. With a melodic piano, sharp vocals and great intruments, the song stands high above the rest as the top song. The lyrics are powerful, and the intruments really come together to draw out the listeners emotions and create a powerful song.
"Lovedrug" is a special song. It's one of those songs that combines 80's with modern. This medley is present throughout the entire album, but it is more distinctively noticeable in this specific song. As such, if you like the genre, you'll like the song. If you think The Killers are good, then you might enjoy this song. If not, then skip it.
"Bleeding Words" is the only song that truly competes with "See Right Through Me" in terms of production and power. With a beautiful instrumental prelude, followed by some powerful vocals, and nice guitar riffs. It's a great way to end a great album.
The other songs of the album hold their own, but these are the songs that make it what it is. And it is worth it.
As every other band in the genre, Mobile is an acquired taste. If you already like the genre, this will make a fine addition to your collection.
If you hate the genre, then this band won't turn you into a lover of it. However, if you have an inkling of interest in the genre, this will be the album that brings you fully into it.
worth a listen.......2006-05-07

Nice blend of sixties songs and old standards.......2004-04-27
Among the sixties songs are covers of Go away little boy (gender adaptation of Goffin and King's Go away little girl - an American hit for the Happenings but a British hit for Mark Wynter), Unchain my heart (Ray Charles), Wives and lovers (a Bacharach-David classic), I can't stop loving you (originally a country song, but Nancy almost certainly recorded it after hearing Ray Charles sing it - he had a number one pop hit with it on both sides of the Atlantic), On Broadway (Drifters), Our day will come (Ruby and the Romantics), You've got your troubles (Fortunes), And I love him (gender adaptation of And I love her - Beatles), Uptight (Stevie Wonder), Call me (originally recorded by Petula Clark but an American hit for Chris Montez) and Yesterday (Beatles) and Going out of my head (Little Anthony and the Imperials).
Among the other songs, Tony Bennett has recorded at least three of them (I left my heart in San Francisco, The good life, Shadow of your smile), though some of the others are obscure - however, they are all excellent and well suited to Nancy.
Nancy was one of the best jazz-pop singers of her generation and this twofer proves it.

Need a Buzz? Try Sugarcubes!.......2004-06-02
Einar has a stronger part in this Disc as compared to the Sugarcubes' first album, Life's Too Good, and he is, as always, hilarious and fun.
This album is better composed than Life's Too Good, and it seems more thought out and much, much more 80s.
Tidal Wave is a hilarious song with two different themes (Björk singing about the dangerous tides, Einar sreaming about sniffing diesel)
Regina is another song that starts out sounding like it will yeild terrible crops of sugar energy, but whips you back into a very sweet melody and a 'haha, Regina!' that's to die for!
Speed is the Key, a wonderfully upbeat song that sums up this album with a simple 'I must energize'!
Dream TV warns of the evils of television as stealing your dreams... it's a sad tale told with an upbeat tune, pumped with happiness... and hilarity. one of my favorites.
The beginning of Nail reminds me of KUKL more than anything, but it proceeds to become entirely Sugarcubefied as the song is an interesting tale... 'that's nonsense!'
Pump.... one of the only sad songs on this album (still told with a somehow upbeat melody) about a girl who only loves the man who hates her. sad sad.
Eat the Menu for an incredibly invigorating Sykur-High! one of my favorite songs about nothing... nothing but a menu...
Bee is probably my favorite off the album... Who is it? seems it's a bee. This song's really catchy, i find myself humming it whenever i get the chance.
Dear Plastic puts björk's philosophy about the world into song... that plastic is natural, and everything humans create is natural, it was meant to happen. another nifty, yet pointless ode to an inane object (with a long history). Sykur heaven!
Dischord is 'Shoot Him'. fun. about shooting him.
Water is calm, like water. Einar is not screeching during this one. he's quite soothing. like water.
A Day Called Zero is the day when this song will speak of the poor human condition. It's great fun, though. fun fun.
Planet, the song that everyone should worship as the universe. she longs to see the universe, and to be a cell. reminds me of timothy leary's psychedelic experience.
Hey!
Hot meat's the country western version of coldsweat... a real chiller.
I love this album. I feel it to be an essential part of anyone's björk/einar/sugarcubes collection because it's a crafty and catchy hunk of history worth biting and chewing... it tastes sugary and gives a nifty happy feeling afterward. a happy album for people who love sad music.
Life can not be better.......2004-04-02
If you like Björk, you will be more than pleased. But, if you find troubles at the first time you listen to it, don't worry, the only thing you'll need is a bit of patience.
The people who don't like this are mistaken..........2003-01-30
All of the sugarcubes albums are brilliant, and there's really something for everyone...and it's a great shame that so many misunderstood this album.
It's humour mixed with fun and wide-eyed-wonderment at times;^)
It contains such satirical classics as "Regina", "Speed Is The Key", "Tidal Wave", "The Bee", the hilarious "Dream TV"...and so many more, I could go on all day, really...
The song "Planet" is also especially memorable and would have been a fine way to close the album, but the bonus tracks are great too, "Hey" being the best of them...
So get the album and see what I mean!:)

Kim Shattuck has a magic touch when it comes to hook-happy power pop. She writes the kind of catchy tunes that might seem effortless to compose but whose grace and precision come from more than just a nifty chord progression. The former Pandora has the knack and the guitar chops to make these rollicking three-minute pop songs memorable--you practically need the jaws-of-life to get them out of your head. The raucous tunes about envy, jealousy, true love, and well-deserved enmity are delivered with the melodic surge of Nirvana combined with the chutzpah of the Shangri-Las. The deft rhythms of bassist Ronnie Barnett and drummer Roy McDonald give Shattuck a straightforward anchor for her crispy chords and cat-scratch vocals. Fans of the dirty sound of Happy Birthday to Me and Blonder and Blonder might worry that Alert's ultraclean production signals that the Muffs are going for a more high-class sound, but don't worry--they're not straying too far from their roots. They're just moving up to three-car-garage rock. --Lois MaffeoCustomer Reviews:
Great Cd.......2003-07-03
Once a great band, now asleep at the wheel...........2002-04-19
The Ramones comparison is ironically apropos, because--like the Muffs--they put out one more mediocre record (the highly overrated, yet still okay "Road to Ruin") before going downhill fast ("End of the Century").
"Alert Today...", may in fact be the Muffs' "End of the Century". But then again, at least "End of the Century" had a few really good songs scattered amongst its surrounding lameness. "Alert Today" has none of that, so maybe calling it their "Halfway to Sanity" would be much more accurate. On this outing, the band sounds like they are on autopilot, trudging through track after track of completely forgettable tunes, devoid of any of the catchy melodies, hooks and energetic musicianship that made previous Muffs albums so engaging. The throwaway songwriting isn't helped by the utterly anemic production values, either. Why the hell did they stop using Rob Cavallo to produce thier records? Maybe it's no coincidence that the Muffs' last great album ("Blonder and Blonder") happened to be their last album with Cavallo at the console.
It's so sad to see such a great band deteriorate so spectacularly in such a short timespan ("Happy Birthday To Me"--"Alert Today"'s predecessor--isn't much better). Kim Shattuck is one heck of a talented songwriter, but you would never guess that by listening to this record.
