It's not encouraging that only one of the four new songs on this 1999 greatest-hits package, arriving after a layoff of more than a year, was cowritten by Raul Malo. But we come not to bury the Mavericks' future, but to praise their past. They're the strongest argument that the change in Nashville in the '90s hasn't all been for the worst. Whether the songs lean toward country or early-'60s pop-rock, they invariably have a good feel, good melody, good hooks. They ring simple and from the heart, without guile or pretense. The musicians are invariably smart, stylish, and sympathetic. Their chops are undeniable, but the ensemble playing makes it all work, and the soloists never upstage the songs or Malo's unforgettable voice. Finally, for all the talk about the Mavericks' Latino-country fusion, it's really more pan-Caribbean than strictly Latino. This is the most festive-sounding country music ever. --John Morthland

5 out of 5 stars All In One.......2006-01-29

If you are unfamiliar with the music of The Mavericks, this is the ideal cd to check out. The Mavericks have released numerous cds but this particular arrangement gives you a feel of their variety. Eight of the songs on this cd are compiled from other cds. The four additional ones fit right in. Terrific remake of the Tremoloes "Here Comes My Baby". My favorite Mavericks song, "Pizziricco", is available only on this cd.

5 out of 5 stars Great band..great alternative country.......2004-01-03

Love the Mavericks...this is a great CD. Though I must admit that I don't like all the songs by them, but their 'mixed-genre' and their alternative styles of country music are as attractive as it gets, not to mention ..HIS voice! My personal favourite is "Things I Cannot Change", which is not included in all their other greatest hits CDs, such as the '20th Century Masters' version...which is disappointing. This album also includes other catchy hits such as "Here Comes the Rain" and "I Should Have Been True". I may have not learned to adore most of their songs yet, but those 'few' favourites that I like, have already earned them as one of my top 5 favourite country artists/groups. And those 'few' songs are not only good, they are just plainly some of the best!

5 out of 5 stars Let The Good Times Roll.......2001-12-24

While I'm writting this, I'm listening to Things I Cannot Change.I just can't stop listening to it. It gets you, like all (I mean all) Mavericks songs. Ironically, it wasn't written by Raul Malo (actually, only one out of the 4 new songs in this compilation was). But it could've been. It has his signature, and only the Mavericks could have done it. What about the other songs? Yes, cause, after all it's a compilation! That reminds me a review I read long ago about Great Days, John Prine's Rhyno compilation. At one point, the reviwer said that the customer would regret buying it, cause it'd make him wanting to buy all the albuns. The same thing would apply to Mavericks if it wasn't for those new songs. Don't try to label the Mavericks. They make great songs, for all occasions I must say, and you have that sort of feeling of being brought back to the 50's in a time capsule. Those good days. Unfortunatelly, these are strange days, where Garth Brooks (just to mention the most pathetic) sells millions of something I can only describe as....well, never mind. You can fill in the blanck. Cheers, and let the good times roll. Mavericks still doing SWELL.

5 out of 5 stars Buck Owens meets Jimmy Buffett.......2001-06-22

After hearing "Dance the Night Away" at a baseball game, I set out on my quest to find this band. I snapped up this CD as soon as I found out it was the Mavericks and was amazed at the depth and breadth of the music on the CD. Mostly upbeat with a 60's retro-country style but somehow feeling new with strong latin beats and horns. Bottom line is an amazing mix of songs that are hard to categorize but easy to enjoy. This has quickly become one of my all-time favorite CD's, often listened to from grilling in the back yard to keeping me company on road trips. You won't be disappointed!

5 out of 5 stars Great Music......Great Songs.......2001-06-13

If you like the Mavericks, or just love music with a beat, you will love this album! It's one of those rare albums were I like or love EVERY song. I usually have to burn my own CDs because most commercial CDs only have 1 to 3 songs I like.....but this Marvericks album is the exception.

5 out of 5 stars Great introduction to the Florida pop-country group.......2005-06-27

The last eight tracks (beginning with Dance the night away, which gave them a UK top five pop hit) summarize, in reverse order, the career of the Mavericks during the nineties. It includes three tracks from What a crying shame (the title track, There goes my heart, I should have been true), which remains the most popular of their albums in America. My favorite album, Music for all occasions, is represented by two tracks (Here comes the rain, All you ever do is bring me down). Two tracks from their commercial debut, From hell to paradise (the title track, This broken heart) complete a look at their music from 1991 to 1998.

This European compilation is based on an American compilation (Super colossal hits of the nineties) but has three extra tracks, (World without love, Are you lonesome tonight, I've got this feeling). World without love (a cover of the Peter and Gordon sixties hit) is the rarest of these, this version never having appeared anywhere prior to its inclusion here. Are you lonesome tonight (a cover of the Elvis classic) had appeared on a various artists album (I can't remember if it was an Elvis tribute or a soundtrack) while I've got this feeling is taken from Trampoline, an album that was very popular in Britain.

The remaining four songs, all newly recorded, include two original songs (Things I cannot change, Pizzirico), a Cat Stevens cover (Here comes my baby, which provided the Tremeloes with a UK top five hit in the sixties) and a Buck Owens cover (Think of me). Thus, the Mavericks maintain their maverick tradition of recording a variety of material from different sources - you just never know what they will do next. Actually, they have been somewhat less productive (at least as far as recorded music is concerned) in the new millennium.

This compilation (whether in its European or American form) provides a great introduction to the music of the Mavericks. I generally prefer listening to their original albums, but several tracks here are not available elsewhere so even die-hard Mavericks fans need this.

5 out of 5 stars Pricey, but worth it!.......2001-09-25

This is the "International" version of the 1999 hits collection that has the domestic "Super Colossal Hits..." name. True fans ought to seriously consider acquiring this even though you probably already own a good share of the music herein. Why? Well, let's review what you get with this disc.

9 of these 15 tracks are from their first four MCA discs(tracks 7 through 15). There is one song from their MCA self-titled debut, the Patsy-Cline influenced "This Broken Heart"; the rest are from the "From Hell to Paradise"/"Music for All Occasions"/"Trampoline" discs. This is a fairly good collection of four key songs from the "...Hell to Paradise" disc, but there's only two songs each from the stellar "...All Occasions" and nearly essential "Trampoline" discs. For the true fan, no abridged view of these vital discs could be satisfying enough, and for the non-fan, this is too little to get a good feel for what a great band this is. Anyway, the real reason for fans to buy this is for the six songs not on any of those prior CD's.

Four of those six songs are on the domestic "Super Colossal Hits.." disc: The dynamic "Things I Cannot Change" original, and peppy covers of the early Cat Stevens' tune "Here Comes My Baby" and Buck Owens' "Think of Me", and a latin-tinged trifle of a tune called "Pizziricco" that is easily the weakest of these four 'new' songs. The two songs not on the domestic hit collection are 1) a fabulously swinging, horn-section-dominated version of Elvis's "Are You Lonesome Tonight?" that could previously only be obtained on the "Babe II: Pig in the City" soundtrack, and 2) the exclusive gem that makes this disc worth tracking down to the dedicated: an excellent, understated reading of "World Without Love" that can be found nowhere else. This tune was written by Paul MCartney circa 1965 and given to his then-girlfriend's brother, Peter Asher, to record. Peter and Gordon had a minor hit with it---but in the hands of the Mavericks, it is slowed down a bit and filled with Raul Malo's achingly beautiful tenor. There is no harmony vocal line (as one had come to expect in the song based on the Peter and Gordon version), but this supremely gorgeous reading of the song makes the steep price of this disc much easier to digest.

Look at it this way: you'd have to buy the domestic hits version and the Babe II soundtrack to get the other 'exclusive' songs on here besides "World Without Love", and by then you'd have spend about 2/3rds of the cost of this disc anyway.

As of this fall of 2001 writing, these are the most recent 'new' recordings available from this excellent band. I recommend you seek out and cherish your copy of this disc and hope that it can help tide you over until the Mavericks drought ends.

4 out of 5 stars Good, Cheeseball Fun.......2004-05-28

Unlike the other reviewer, I like this concept, right down to the tracks listed under "side one" and "side two" and the "can also be played in mono" disclaimer. Seems like the bands that revelled most in the goofiness turned out the best covers. I bought it cheap and feel it's well worth the price, even though I probably will routinely skip some of the songs.

Low-lights include "Don't Go Breaking My Heart" and "I'm Not In Love". These are my least favorite types of remakes - a simple sped up rhythm and the addition of lots of hard, grinding guitars. Totally unorginial and boring. Susan Voelz tries to do "Ode To Billy Joe" ala the Cowboys Junkies but with not as much talent. Snooze. "Jackie Blue" is pretty uninspired as well.

I like the addition of Popcorn, which is not quite what I'd consider the same genre as the other songs but total cheesy nostalgia so I love it. I also like getting to hear something else from the band who did the Kids in the Hall theme song.

"Side Two" is much more consistent. I know I'll listen to it more often. Even if many of the songs aren't too different from the originals, they're upbeat and well done. The only exception is "Rocket Man", but then I despise the original so maybe I'm biased.

My favorite remake is "Venus", done as bluesy, southern rockabilly. To me, this is what doing a cover tune is all about. It's fun, it creative, it's a darn good song in it's own right. I can't believe I've never heard this on the radio.

2 out of 5 stars This is a ridiculous concept.......1998-12-22

ugh! Think of a mix of early 90's alternative stars and underground bands covering some mid-70's K-TEL 'greatest hits'. The Smashing Pumpkins blow some fuzz into 'Jackie Blue', and some of the other songs are amusing, but really, you should have better things to spend your money on.
