5 out of 5 stars Country with a Cajun Heart.......2006-07-22

This is a double purchase which is a real treasure. I used to clean house to the songs from an old cassette, which is all worn out now, but my house was spotless. Thank goodness I was travelling thru Amazon and threw the Kershaw boys name in the search area to see if anything was available. These two CDS came up and I didnt hesitate to purchase. One thing I miss about the CD's of today is not getting a pic of the artist as the years go by. Isnt that why we have family photos? Dont let the opportunity to slip by to own some real Cajun Heart, it also helps in the long drives when ur stuck in traffic to and from work, that is where i get my most play time and I can still see them on the OPry with his brother and on the Hee Haw shows. I Love u Doug wherever you are.

2 out of 5 stars The obligatory live album and the contractual obligation.......2006-04-25

The mid-70's saw a lot of trends unfold in the music business. Certain styles came to the fore that left an indeliable mark on all music. The nation went gaga over disco, and the south, well, decided that was too limp. So, "southern rock" became the Next Big Thing.
Doug Kershaw jumped on the southern rock bandwagon.
"Alive & Pickin'" isn't that bad of an album. Really. "Cajun Stripper" shows that Doug, this time around, can actually handle an accordian somewhat. He even throws in some decent electric violin (I say violin instead of fiddle with great reason), but the overall product leaves a bad taste in your mouth. There's nothing particularly Cajun about the music, it sounds nothing like what Doug had done beforehand (re: the LPs Cajun Way and Spanish Moss, and even the honky fluff that followed in their wake), and it sounds like the backing band is doing a poor man's imitation of the Marshall Tucker Band. On top of that, of course, is that very little of this album is actually live. Much of it was done in the studio, overdubs and edits galore (in that time period, it was common)
Doug went from sounding like a Rebel flag waving bar veteran to a ridiculous Cajun-styled Keith Moon on his next album. Of course, the "Ragin Cajun" album doesn't follow "Alive & Pickin'" on this CD, instead the 1978 album "Louisiana Man" (how many albums bore this title beforehand? Pull out your Rusty & Doug records...) is included.
This album was done to fill up the final slot on his contract with WB. First we start out with the lamest cover of "Jambalaya (On The Bayou)" known to man. Yes, the cover by Gerry & The Pacemakers was taken into account. Doug introduces the track with "To the Cajun land, and to my Cajun people". Two things which no longer gave him the time of day, as the Cajuns would take such as an insult. Yet ANOTHER version of "Louisiana Man" follows, but its not the Shakespearean drama-fest that the version on the "Swamp Grass" album was. Moving on, the question is, "who wants to hear Doug Kershaw cover Randy Newman?", unless you want to hear "Marie", the answer would be no. Then we get a Jesse Winchester tune, in French, and Doug once again shows us how horrible his French speaking is, as he sings the number in Canadian French. Then there's the unspeakable Dylan cover. "Don't try No-Doze"? C'mon Doug! "Just Wanna Feel The Magic" is a nice Mel McDaniel cover and its a contender for best track on the LP. "Hardly Anymore" is MOR while "French Waltz" is just as generic as its title. "If You Don't..." is an upbeat tune with a pumping dance beat and gets old fast. The "Sooner I Go" and "Louisana Sun" were better the first time around, back when Rusty & Doug recorded them in the 60's. The latter track previously appeared on the "Devil's Elbow" album.
Bottom line: Doug is a better showman than a recording artist.

4 out of 5 stars Two Terrific Albums from the Ragin' Cajun.......2006-03-03

If you are at all a fan of Cajun country or just a some good fiddlin, then this disc is a real treat. It compiles some of Doug Kershaw's finest work on one disc. Before this, these two records were nearly impossible to find, even on vinyl. When I was growing up, my father had both of these and played them constantly. I was a bit afraid that perhaps my memories were better than the music. But I've listened to this nearly every day since I bought it and can say they hold up remarkably well.

Alive & Pickin' is a recording from a raucous live show in Atlanta in 1974. Kershaw's energy seems unending and his fiddling is the real star here. His Orange Blossom Special medley is a highlight, featuring a blistering fiddle. Favorites Diggy Diggy Lo and Louisiana Man are also featured. The concert recording has no annoying track breaks, so listening to it straight through makes it almost seem like you're there (even though I would've be less than a year old!)

The Lousiana Man I believe is from a few years later and features another recording of Louisiana Man as well as an energetic rendition of Hank William's Jambalaya (On the Bayou). A quality studio album, with a little less emphasis on the fiddle, but a great listen. Of particular interest are a few ballads showcasing Doug's vocal talents, which provide a really nice contrast to some of the more boisterous stuff.

My only quibble would be that the recordings sound more like straight transfers rather than remasters, so the sound comes off a little flat in places. Alive & Pickin' especially suffers a bit from a lack of bass. This is pretty minor, though. The music is still a joy to listen to.

4 out of 5 stars One album of Doug Kershaw Live in 1975, the other a 1978 studio album.......2005-08-29

Doug "Ragin' Cajun" Kershaw's original Warner Bros. albums had never been on CD before Collectables' reissues of "The Cajun Way," "Spanish Moss," "Flip, Flop and Fly," and "The Ragin' Cajun" and this CD on Wounded Bird, a twofer of "Alive and Pickin'," which was recorded live in Atlanta in 1975 and full of the Kershaw style of singing and musicianship and is a great extravaganza, and 1978's "The Louisiana Man," which is a studio album with some traditional cajun songs and lots of mainstream country styled songs and not quite the extravaganza as the live album on this disc, but it is very good nonetheless. As he is much better as a live performer than as a recording artist in the studio although his studio work is great, this disc IS the disc to start with as it contains the bulk of his signature songs live and/or in the studio and flows better than the "Best of" CD that Warner issued in 1989. One track on the live album worthwhile is a medley of "Orange Blossom Special" and "You Are My Sunshine" which Doug performs in the Doug Kershaw style showcasing his fiddling talent.

4 out of 5 stars A fine selection from one of Nashville's great also-rans.......2004-02-14

A strong selection of Louisiana country hero Jimmy "C" Newman's hits from the late '50s and '60s, many laced with Cajun-style fiddles and a long Louisiana drawl. Newman worked in obscurity for about a decade before his breakthrough in the mid-1950s; his early hits were musically strong and fairly rough hewn; it's pretty remarkable, though -- and something of a testimony to the former power of regional fan bases -- that a guy with such a pronounced lisp could have done so well on the charts. On his mid-50s singles for the Dot label, Newman's slurred "s" and "st" almost constantly; although by the time he signed to Decca in '61, he'd smoothed his impediment out, along with some of the rougher, more honkytonk edges in his music. This is a pretty nice collection of a well-known Nashville second-stringer; Newman never topped the charts, but he snuck into the Top Ten consistently throughout his career.

The only downside of this disc is that none of his material on MGM (from 1958-60) is included, so there's an unfortunate gap of a few years... (Did he have a lisp then, too... or not??) Overall, though, this is a good collection for fans of hard country as well as the rootsier side of the Nashville Sound.

4 out of 5 stars 1960's Decca Recordings.......2003-08-16

A member of the Grand Ole Opry for well over 40 years. Jimmy C Newman has had a long string of hits. This collection features the many hits Jimmy had with Decca records. "DJ for a Day" from 1963 was a song by a then unknown by the name of Tom T. Hall. This is the best single collection you will find on Jimmy C. Newman. The "C" stands for cajun. Good Collection!!!

Album Description

Declan McManus Pumps It Up. Joe Bussard. "He's an eccentric record collector who's preserved all sorts of magical corners of music - although he says things like, 'There are no good jazz records made after 1927.'" Elvis Costello - Esquire UK October 2005

"This is the music of poor whites and blacks: wild-ass jazz and string-band hillbilly, surreal yodels and king snake moans, lightning-bolt blues and whorehouse romps and orgasmic gospel. It's all anti-pop, anti-sentimental: the raw sounds of the city gutter and the roadside ditch." Desperate Man Blues by Eddie Dean - Da Capo Best Music Writing 2000

"Joe has spent more than 50 years pursuing his purpose with a single-mindedness bordering on mania. And his purpose is no less than collecting and preserving the vast wealth of American vernacular music that was recorded on fragile shellac discs during the early decades of this century." A Visit and Interview with Record Collector Joseph E. Bussard, Jr by Marshall Wyatt - Old-Time Herald Spring 1999 - oldhatrecords.com/BussardInt.html

24 Rare Gems From The King Of Record Collectors - String Bands, Blues, Jazz, Country, Cajun, Gospel. Profusely illustrated, 28-page full-color booklet includes biographical essay, fully annotated discography, and (online) firsthand accounts of Joe's record collecting adventures. 72 minutes of newly, digitally remastered music. Jewel case, second edition.

Album Description

The 24-track sampler is drawn from longtime radio broadcaster Bussard's fabled collection. The triple-fold release comes with a full-color, 72-page booklet filled with funny stories about Bussard's door-knocking searches for old shellac, more than 40 photos and complete annotation.

Sell your shoes cause your goin to heaven after you play this one! You can finally say you've heard it all. Top drawer assemblage of roots, blues, and just plain fun. Uncle Joe say it ain't so... give us another, PLEASE!

4 out of 5 stars terrific collection of early songs.......2007-02-13

If you're interested in the history of US music, as I am, you'll find this a fine addition. Cleaned up as well as can be expected but still some hum & hiss...but not enough to be distracting.

5 out of 5 stars another great release from OLD HAT........2006-12-26

everything i've ever bought on the old hat label has been fantastic, and this is no exception. a must have disc for fans of old time music. and if you have no old time music discs, this would be as good a place as any to start with. great sound and a variety of musical styles make this disc a complete winner.

5 out of 5 stars Will Interest Lovers of Roots Music.......2006-07-15

A generous 24-track helping of some of record collector extraordinare Joe Bussard's favorites. The examples included run the gamut of early 20th centruy roots music ranging from Hillybilly music to Blues, Jazz, Jug Bands and beyond.

Sound quality is top notch -- these guys really know how to do 78-RPM transfers. Also Joe's records seem to be in excellent condition to begin with so not a lot of noise reduction is required. This is one of the very finest sounding discs of 78-RPM transfers that I have heard.

Packaging is also lavish with a 70 page booklet that contains annotations for each of the 24 tracks, and lots of interesting photos of vintage record labels and packaging, as well as several essays and stories about Joe's record collecting career. There's much of interest here for those who love Roots music.

4 out of 5 stars A total package .......2006-02-04

I had not heard of Joe Bussard before this collection though I consider myself an avid music enthusiast and budding collector. After having heard this disc (and having read the extensive liner notes) I'm more than a little green with envy over Bussard's collection.

This disc collects some of Joe's personal favourites with names more familiar (Big Bill Broonzy, Gene Autry, Uncle Dave Macon) and some that will prove obscure to all but the most investigative record collectors (A.A. Gray and Seven-Foot Dilly, Fields Ward and the Grayson County Railsplitters, The Stripling Brothers). It's also cross-genre so if you only like country, or only blues, or only gospel, this will not be the collection for you.

Besides the songs themselves, which would be enough to make this a good buy, the packaging tells you a lot about WHO Bussard is (been collecting records since 12, once ran a pirate radio station), WHY he collects ("You ever smell the sleeves? They got that real funny wood smell to 'em.") along with some great stories about the "finds" he's made over the years. He's enough of a character that I'd love to watch the documentary about him. You also get brief bios for each of the performers included (a paragraph or two) as a nice bonus.

HIGHLIGHTS:
Twin fiddle workout "The Lost Child" has served as the radio theme for Bussard for years and I can see why. It's a keeper that alternates smooth fiddling with some nice staccato that implies the child might be "skipping" at play. Jazz-blues "The (New) Call of the Freaks" has an insistent chorus ("Stick out your cans/Here come the garbageman...") while Blind Gary (AKA Rev. Gary Davis) does a great gospel blues sermonette in "You Got to Go Down" ("You got to learn how to treat everybody/cuz you got to go down...ashes to ashes and dust to dust"). Charley Jordan's risque blues "Keep it Clean" is a standout as well. Autry's "Atlanta Bound" is far from the cheerful image of the man who sang "Rudolph": he's promising to kill the "rounder" who's dallying with his wife.

LOWS:
The only tune here I found unlistenable is the gratingly off-key family gospel tune "Give the World a Smile" by the Corley Family. Despite the nice sentimental lyric, I just couldn't stomach the singers themselves.

BOTTOM LINE:
If you have an interest in early music that's not restrictive to a single style, this is a very nice collection with some gems that would otherwise be lost.

Miller), wasn't a Jimmy Reed disciple. Sundown's somber brand of blues was more in keeping with the gruff sound of Muddy Waters. The guitarist was one of the most powerful members of Miller's south Louisiana stable, responsible for several seminal swamp standards on Excello Records. Ace.

Highly unique and complex, yet more accessible to the average listener than many reviewers and writers lead one to believe. Very rhythmic guitar playing with catchy riffs and motifs that are built around deeply personal, seemingly improvised vocals. I am occasionally reminded of Magic Sam's insistent groove and Marc Ribot's jagged picking, but there's simply nothing else in folk, blues or rock like this.

5 out of 5 stars Nice disc for the casual Rusty & Doug listener.......2006-04-24

I'll begin this review by telling you that if you are looking to buy brand-new a compilation covering Rusty & Doug, go for "Lousiana Men" which features all of their Hickory recordings. If you have a chance to get this CD that I am reviewing, by way of used music shops, etc., read on.
For anyone who wants an overview of the recordings of Rusty & Doug at Hickory records, you'd be hard pressed to find another brief compilation that accurately covers this territory. The British import "Louisiana Man" on the Magnum label gives you just enough, so that you may satisfy your curiousity, and decide if you'd like to hear more or not.
Here, you have the original versions of "Diggy Diggy Lo", "Lousiana Man" and "Cajun Joe". Also here is the re-recording of "So Lovely Baby", and some nice hillbilly numbers like "Look Around" and "Mister Love". Doug and Rusty were very much at home doing this kind of music, but its sad that they jumped the trad-country ship in the 60's. Honorable mention is the inclusion of the Roy Acuff cover, "Our Own Jole Blon".
If you find it used, get it. If you want more, for only the price of what this one disc would cost brand new, go for Ace's "Louisiana Men".
