Is music for a good cause a good cause for music? Not really, if you expect artistry. But this smorgasbord of popular international musical stars brings together extreme musical genres for an excellent purpose, and is enjoyable enough for almost anyone. Pavarotti's relaxed and buoyant leadership and still gorgeous tenor add beauty to the rock/pop selections. Trisha Yearwood, Celine Dion, and Stevie Wonder impressively hold their own against Opera Spice; but the other artists pale against the master's presence. The Spice Girls will never be confused with Anonymous 4; Zucchero's growling is scary; Florent Pagny exemplifies French rock; and Pino Daniele's breathy tenor is mellow and soothing. Best for those wanting to experience Pavarotti's vocal beauty in a more popular idiom. --Barbara Eisner Bayer

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A Superb Collection of Music.......2002-11-14

As a musician, I first ran into this disk as a PBS broadcast. What caught my ear was that every song in the concert has "the groove." Other than a children's choral cut, not a single song in the entire collection has a flaw. You'd think the Spice Girls would be a silly addition to the concert, but they do a tremendous job. Each artist appears twice, usually with Pavaotti in one of their songs, sometimes twice. Vanessa Williams is Hot! and does an incredible dance number. The engineering is excellent, with solid side-to-side separation for a really "big" sound. All in all, this is one of the favorite CDs in my music library.

5 out of 5 stars This is a delightful combination of music talents to enjoy!.......1999-04-01

We first saw Pavarotti and Friends on Public Television as a fundraising event. We found the CD and especially love to listen to this CD in our car which has a great sound system. Each vocalist is so special and you will be singing along with them after a couple of plays!

5 out of 5 stars This will tenderize your heart........1999-03-07

Brilliant talent for needy children, that touches the soul, and sets it on fire. Your tears will soak your socks. James

5 out of 5 stars Phenomenal !! A must have for any music library........1998-12-29

A most wonderful gathering of some of the world's greatest vocalists. Such a unique blend of international Modern & Classical. If one were to put to test the ability of a vocalist to adapt to a variety of melodies, this is it. Grab your lover and take a trip in their arms with this CD!!

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding Music, bringing Pavarotti to new heights........1998-12-06

Easily the best in the Pavarotti & Friends series. Always an artist on the cutting edge, with this album, Pavarotti's work will have great appeal to his fans and to scores of new enthusiasts. His duets with the Spice Girls, Vanessa Williams, Zucchero, and Stevie Wonder make it obvious that his voice has adaptability and a passion that takes it into many musical genres with ease. This shouldn't be a surprise to anyone. Sting once commented that great music occurs in the "synaptic gaps" where many different styles come together - this is an album that epitomizes the concept. Neopolitan music is a folk music in Italy, with overtones of American folk/country/jazz/rock, and Pavarotti is the Neopolitan master. This is a perfect fit of artists and selected titles. Earlier combinations of artists in this series were often much too somber, much less fun. Give this one to your teens or your great grandmother ... they'll find they have more musical tastes in common than they'd have ever imagined.

5 out of 5 stars Painless and Pleasant.......2000-08-19

It's not that I hate opera, it's rather that I cannot handle and entire opera without nodding off. This 4 disc CD provides highlights from the most famous and recognizable arias, i.e., Pagliacci, Carmen, Rigoletto, Madame Butterfly, La Boheme, The Mikado, and H.M.S. Pinafore -- just to mention a few. I appreciate the ability to enjoy select arias from some of the most beautiful and and exceptional operas in the world, and played by first class orchestras, without having to sit through the entire opera.

First of all, I never ever liked any sort of Country music, with the exception of this. I am mostly into dance music, and the RH Factor Radio Edit is by far the best mix, in my opinion. With a catchy synth line in the back and LeAnn's stellar vocals, it is the best song ever created. If you like dance music, country music, remixes, or just LeAnn Rimes, DEFINITELY BUY THIS! You will not be disappointed!

5 out of 5 stars How Do I Live Without LeAnn??.......2001-10-23

Rimes showed true talent in the ever so controversal cut of How Do I Live. The release of that song was one of the most prominent points in Rimes career. Still there was an ongoing debate as to whose version was better out of 'fresh talent' that of Rimes or 'known talent' that of Trisha Yearwood. Although Yearwood's version was given the ever so desired Grammy Award, Rimes' version rode to the top of the charts and ended with an amazing CD sales count.

EXCELLENT!!!!!! - 10 stars out of 5 stars!!

It was just recently that my best friend was killed in an automobile accident. When it came time to the funeral her mom played "How do I live" The song caught everyones hearts. After the funeral I ran out and bought the cd. Everynight I listen to it. It keeps me going and is a wonderful song for all ages, sex, and race. Once you listen to the cd you'll never want to listen to another one!

5 out of 5 stars Another fantasic recording.......2007-01-16

I Fagiolini is one of those groups where I try to get my hands on every recording they've made. This CD is just another example of why. Great individual voices but the ensemble really comes together well. They make it sound so easy to sing this repertoire. Tomkins is a a master of writing sad laments such as Woe is Me, When David Heard, and I Fagiolini brings out the raw emotion of these pieces. If you are an early music connoisseur, you will love this group. Pick up this CD, and while you're at it, get their Triumphs of Oriana and the two Byrd recordings. You won't regret it.

5 out of 5 stars Best Love Song for a first kiss or date.......2004-07-29

Whenever I Hear Leann Rimes sing How Do I Live it reminds me of my first kiss with my boyfriend and the lyrics I could easily relate to and cherish with. While on a Disney Vacation i'd play this song constantly every day because it's sooo beautiful and has meaningful lyrics and every time I Play it i'll always remember my first kiss and my first date and this song will always have a special meaning to me and my boyfriend,
Thank you Leann for such a wonderful song

            4 out of 5 stars How Do I Review..........2004-07-08

I'll be the first to admit I'm biased...but only partially. It has nothing to do with this song alone, or Trisha Yearwood vs. LeAnn Rimes. It has more to do with my opinion of both women's talents. I have never been much of a fan of Trisha Yearwood's work, with the exception of one or two songs. I was not a big fan of "Blue" when it first came out, either. I'm still not much on that song, but I have grown to appreciate more of LeAnn's other work.

On to the song. I have to agree with the other reviewer who stated that he felt that the reason the producers of Con Air chose the Trisha Yearwood version is for the marketability and name recognition of Ms. Yearwood. She happened to be the bigger name at the time, although when it comes to country artists, that's not saying much, as Con Air was an action movie, and not many action films have crossover appeal. The true crossover appeal in country music is in "country rock" artists such as Elvis, Travis Tritt, Shania Twain, LeAnn Rimes (duh!), Lynyrd Skynyrd, and others. True country (as in honky-tonk, bluegrass, etc.) just doesn't have the same crossover appeal.

Back to the song. I have listened to both versions extensively, and can't fathom where people think Ms. Rimes' version is "hollow", "without feeling", etc. It comes across quite clear to me the emotion in the song as expressed by LeAnn Rimes. Trisha Yearwood may be a more established face/name in the music scene, but it is her work that is the more hollow version of this tune. Personally, I think most of Trisha Yearwood's work is on the tuneless side, as Ms. Yearwood seems to me to only have one pitch, and not a whole lot of range.

I rarely rate anything 5 stars, so four is as good as it gets for me. The debat will of course rage on, but I felt like putting in my own 2 cents for what it is worth.

5 out of 5 stars the best version.......2004-03-12

i don't know why there are so many complaints about the two versions of this song. obviously both singers came out winners: Yearwood had the biggest hit of her career with it and won a Grammy while Rimes sold 3,000,000 copies of it and it held the #1 spot on AC chart for 12 weeks and the #1 spot on the Country Single Sales chart for half a year...and not only that, Rimes version was on the Hot 100 Pop chart 69 weeks, making it one of the longest charting singles in music history...so tell me why there is so much complaining? Rimes should be the one who should get our sympathy because she was told by the Con-Air people that they wanted her to sing this song...but someone else learned that Yearwood had also recorded the song so they listened to both. the producers of the movie picked Yearwood's version...NOT because it was better...but because Yearwood had more of a name than Rimes did at the time and the producers felt Yearwood could help sell the movie. remember, this was mid 1997, barely a year after Rimes made her debut and so the producers under-estimated what Rimes COULD HAVE done for the film had they gone with her version all along. This single was also re-mixed into a dance version and yes, THAT version also hit #1...on the Dance Singles chart, that is!

5 out of 5 stars Gave Me Chills.......2003-08-01

I could do without the alternate mixes of "How Do I Live", but the film version of the song is worth the purchase. It is far better than the Trisha Yearwood version (and I like Trisha Yearwood). This song showcases the best female voice in country music, if not the entire music industry.

5 out of 5 stars The real How Do I Live talent... LeAnn Rimes.......2001-10-23

The song that showed Rimes true talent just so happens to be the ever so controversal cut of How Do I Live. The release of that song was one of the most prominent points in Rimes career. Still there was an ongoing debate as to whose version was better out of 'fresh talent' that of Rimes or 'known talent' that of
            Trisha Yearwood.

Trisha Yearwoods version of the song was a cold emotionless cut - Rimes showed true talent in this very song - with emotions pouring out of the stereo everytime you listen to it...

Although Yearwood's version was given the ever so desired Grammy Award, Rimes' version rode to the top of the charts and ended with an amazing CD sales count.... So how do YOU live without LeAnn??

            Always Mirren.
