Bagpipes, a song written as the soundtrack to a Michel Gondry music video, Patti Page's musical shadow, and Jack and Meg co-narrating a scavenger's rummages: It must be time for Icky Thump, the many-flavored riposte to 2006's Get Behind Me Satan. The duo starts big with the title track--Jack's fast-tumbling, falsetto-tinged lyrics jagging on hyper keyboard-sounding segues and Meg's pounding drums. They rarely shy from an idea, invoking acoustic Bob Dylan to frame "300 M.P.H. Torrential Outpour Blues," but interjecting a series of distortion-laden guitar paroxysms for good measure. The end of Icky, on "Effect and Cause," is where Jack's trademark vocal warble and spare, quick acoustic strums meet Meg's single-minded beats. Everywhere on Icky giant riffs leap and shout, with Flamenco horns and those eerie bagpipes and rhythmic shifts and Jack's impatient vocal kinetics, marking new territories even as the White Stripes again populate them with vintage ideas. --Andrew BartlettAlbum Description
The White Stripes are back with the most bombastic album they've ever produced! While revealing the band's roots in American folk music, Icky Thump is an explosive, revolutionary assault that brings together garage rock, every blues style of the past 100 years, nouveau, and flamenco. This is truly a modern rock and roll masterpiece!Customer Reviews:
The Best Mr. White and Meg have put out yet........2007-07-19
How does a mere duo create the power of one of the greatest Rock band in history? I dunno.
I don't care that Jack is an eccentric nut-case. I really like his music. He must also be doing something right because he's still with his wife.
More power to him and all those like him.

Aha Shake Heartbreak may have blown open the doors of fame for Kings of Leon, but their third full-length album (named for a United Pentecostal Church ministers' conference) could well usher the Nashville foursome directly to rock and roll's zenith. There's hardly a change in plans for the three Followill brothers and their cousin, and that means producer Ethan Johns, a smorgasbord of musical influences, and a cacophonous ensemble of guitar, bass, and drums. A trio of relentless rockers--"My Party," "Camaro," and the sarcastic "Charmer"--are sure to pacify those familiar with the Kings' blueprint, yet there is ripening in the band's approach heard, in several of the record's 13 songs. Reverb guitar and vocals and a "woo woo" chorus add a sinister aspect to "Trunk," and "Knocked Up" features a laissez-faire Caleb Followill crooning "She don't care what her mama said/She's gonna have my baby." The seven-minute revelation of fatherhood that opens the album leads into the U2-influenced "McFearless," a reggae-splashed "Ragoo," and the rambling English blues of "Black Thumbnail." It's a rogue element that has always left every record fresh, and this time it has Kings of Leon teetering on the edge of rock renown. --Scott HolterAlbum Description
Third album from the rockin' American quartet whose previous albums (2003's Youth And Young Manhood and Aha Shake Heartbreak from '05) have earned them a large worldwide following. Consisting of three brothers and a cousin, the Kings Of Leon mix their own brand of Southern Rock with touches of Garage, Punk and Alternative swagger. RCA.Album Details

Disappointing comeback.......2007-07-07
I got this CD after reading a stellar review by Q Magazine appauding it. Needless to say, I was disappointed.
Best Alternative/Indie/Rock Album This Year.......2007-07-05
Their debut was a southern-fried scramble of distorted guitars and yelping vocals that seemed to delight in its own unholiness. On Because of the Times, the guitars are still distorted, the singer's still yelping and the themes aren't necessarily wholesome - see 'Knocked Up', in which singer Caleb belts "She don't care what her mama says, no she's gonna have my baby" - but at times there's a beauty to the arrangements that's almost divine.
That's not to suggest that the band has forgotten to rock, though, because they haven't; in fact, at this point in their career the band has the musicianship to back up their ambition, and the result is some of the most fulfilling rock you can hear on the indie scene today.
If you like either of KoL's previous two albums, you'll love this one. If you're looking for an introduction to the Kings of Leon's work, this is as good a starting point as any.

There's nothing terribly complicated about the Fratellis' debut album, Costello Music, but that's by no means a criticism. Rather than inject their songs with complex chords, or steep their lyrics with their political and social agendas, this Glasgow trio have instead focussed on writing 13 songs that are pure, unabashed entertainment. And it's a pace--and an attitude--that doesn't let up, from the jumpy opening bars of "Henrietta" to the groupie-reminiscing of "Ole Black'n'Blue Eyes". In many ways, Costello Music sounds like a return to the hedonistic rush of early 1990s Britpop, with its exhilarating guitar riffs and arrogant swagger--"Chelsea Dagger" somehow applies the attitude of early Oasis to the pop catchiness of Great Escape-era Blur. But the Fratellis also know their history: the ska-punk of "Cuntry Boys & City Girls" and "For the Girl" has the Fratellis sounding like the cheeky offspring of the Clash, or a less-irritating Madness. But all this analysis kind of misses the point of Costello Music: this is music for dancing, not for contemplation. It's loud, fast and in-your-face, exactly what you'd expect from three young men with guitars. --Ted KordCustomer Reviews:
Didn't see this coming!.......2007-07-15
Other than the main hits such as Chelsea Dagger and Flathead- this album is full of amazing song. Nothing short of a must buy if you like indie or pop; or if you were like me, looking to lighten up your atmosphere. And that's exactly what this does- it just makes you happy; makes you want to dance even if you can't.
Every song is filled with an incredible rhythm, ranging from mosh pit punk to bob your head and go with the flow. Songs such as Henrietta and Whistle for the Choir are full of constantly changing riffs, so you can't expect what to hear next. So it never gets old.
The lyrics are quite interesting, the way he tells his stories are such that you can just close your eyes and watch the colors dance when you're feeling down or getting you and your friends amped for the trip to the game. One thing i should address for the parents is the cover art, it can seem slightly provocative- but nothing more than you'd see openly on TV nowadays.
Ok, so if this whole makes less than any sense to you- lemme just sum it up into one sentence.
"You will not regret this buy!"
THIS is my summer album.......2007-07-01
That's certainly not the case here. This is the very, very rare album that's actually worth buying. There's not a bad track on here. When's the last time you said that about a CD? Buy it... you will not be sorry!

Jokingly referred to as the White Stripes' British album, Elephant is scattered with cultural references that give away the fact it was recorded far from home. Just listen to the lyrics on "Seven Nation Army" ("From the Queen of England to the hounds of Hell") or the album outro, in which someone chips in, "Jolly good, cup of tea?" But while there are new twists here, from Meg White discovering her voice to a tongue-in-cheek threesome with Holly Golightly, Elephant is no great departure for Jack and Meg White. They still push their creativity (and the boundaries of their eight-track) to new heights. Check out the startling, Queen-inspired "There's No Home for You Here," while the deep bass line on "Seven Nation Army" makes it a classic indie dance track. But while some songs fly off into new realms, there's plenty of their trademark straight-up bluesy rock, notably the overtly sexual "Ball and Biscuit." And there's Jack's plaintive, resolutely modest and yet theatrical voice. --Caroline ButlerAlbum Description

The White Stripes
Elephant is the White Stripes fourth album and one of the best. It has fourteen songs of alternative rock for all ages. Some song like Seven Nation Army and Black Math are faster than songs like In the Cold, Cold Night and Ball and Biscuit.
The White Stripes may only be a two-person band but Jack White (vocals, guitar and piano) along with Meg White (percussion) can think up some awesome songs. Some of those songs are Seven Nation Army, Black Math and The Hardest Button to Button. Not all CDs are perfect though. In the Cold, Cold Night, The Air Near my Fingers and You've got Her in Your Pocket don't appeal to me.
My cousin and I are huge White Stripes junkies. We both think that this is one of their best albums. There is just one thing. If you are strictly a Korn, Green Day, Metallica, Rob Zombie etc. fan, you aren't going to be into this CD as much. It has its fair share of slower songs but great guitar.
If you want to try the White Stripes, listen to their previous albums. They are The White Stripes, De Stijl and White Blood Cells. Their newer CD's are Get Behind Me Satin, Walking with a Ghost and Icky Thump Which comes out June 19, 2007.
Give the White Stripes a try. I promise you'll love them.

Smothered by the indulgence of his rock star ranking, Jack White steps into the eccentricities of the supergroup, and at first glance, this seems to be a band where White's imposing presence could overshadow the rest. Not the case with these Raconteurs. Teaming with fellow Detroit songwriter Brendan Benson and Jack Lawrence and Patrick Keeler, the rhythm section from Cincinnati band the Greenhornes, White exhales a bit, deferring enough to his mates to make Broken Boy Soldiers play like a team effort. Following the Benson blueprint, "Steady as She Goes," which opens as a slice of 1960's radio pop, the record steers away from pigeonholing the rest of the way. White's in a Middle Eastern mood for the title track as he pulls off a wicked Robert Plant howl, while Lawrence and Keeler excel on the chorus-strong "Intimate Secretary" and the optimistic acoustic rocker "Yellow Sun." Like so many all-star bands before them, The Raconteurs could be one and done. But don't place the blame on this fertile and genuine debut. --Scott Holter

Album Description
The Raconteurs are a new band made up of old friends, consisting of Jack Lawrence (bass), Patrick Keeler (drums), Brendan Benson (guitars, vocals, keys) and Jack White(guitars, vocals, keys). The seed was sewn in an attic in the middle of a hot summer when friends Jack White and Brendan Benson got together and wrote a song that truly inspired them. This song was "Steady, As She Goes" and the inspiration led to the creation of a full band with the addition of Lawrence and Keeler. While each of these four individuals have had successful careers with their own bands, the culmination of all of their talents is what truly makes The Raconteurs a force to be reckoned with.Customer Reviews:

Amazon.com's Best of 2001
Rock & roll is constantly splintering into multiple personalities. Big radio players layer thick slabs of studio shine on their albums, while back-to-the-basics rockers keep the sound so raw it rubs calluses on your ears. The White Stripes fall in the latter category. The duo strips down to the fundamentals of Meg White's simple drumbeat and Jack White's garagy guitar and pleading vocals. While the elements are sparse, the Detroit act create a noisy, hip-grinding batch of punk R&B, displayed again on White Blood Cells, the Stripes' third full-length. While it's hard to pick favorites from such talent, this band only gets better with time. White's vocals were sounding like a young Robert Plant on De Stijl--definitely not a bad thing--but on Cells, he's developed his own persona. He throws musical fits on "Fell in Love with a Girl," gets almost loungy on the piano number "This Protector," and keeps the blues vibe running on "Now Mary." The album is so rich with basic variations on a simple theme it's hard to believe such soulful energy comes from just two people. White Blood Cells is an amazing piece of work, a benchmark that ought to inspire new legions of garage rockers for years to come. --Jennifer MaerzAlbum Description
This, the much anticipated third album by Detroit's critically acclaimed brother and sister duo, The White Stripes was recorded in early February this year at the legendary Easley Studio in Memphis, Tennessee and if The White Stripes were the Velvet Underground this would be their Loaded. It's becoming apparent that THE WHITE STRIPES ARE the great white hope and they have developed an enthusiastic following across the country and around the world. White Blood Cells has 15 original tracks performed by Jack and Meg White, no orchestras, session musicians or studio trickery has been employed. 2001 release.Customer Reviews:
What is this..........2007-07-01
This albumn only has 1 good song "Fell in love with a girl" which lasts less than 2 minutes. Then the rest of the albumn is full of meandering filler that all sounds like the same 3 guitar chords, the same screaming and the same repetative drum line.
This band spits out a albumn like every 6 months...They would fare much better if they placed all their good songs together and only released 1 album every 2 or 3 years.
This cd will certainly be headed to the Used CD store...if they already do not have too many copies.
what the hey.......2007-06-11
(3.5 stars) ...but don't call Jack White a genius!.......2007-04-07
That said, I like this band. Just not as much as mainstream critics want me to. Plenty of cool songs, like Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground, Fell in Love with a Girl, Hotel Yorba, Finding it Harder to Be a Gentlemen, We're Gonna Be Friends, The Same Boy You've Always Known and Now Mary. So you take these, you merge them with the highlights from Elephant, and you've got an awesome disc on your hands. Too bad there's too much filler here, most of it generic garage-punk like I Think I Smell a Rat, Offend in Every Way, Expecting, The Union Forever and This Protector. And you can forget about experimentation, really, other than the acoustic tracks Hotel Yorba and We're Gonna Be Friends. Considering how much (read: zero) experimentation most mainstream bands do today, perhaps that's why Mr. White gets slobbered all over. Drummer Meg White kinda takes a backseat, but she can really drum when she feels like it.
I think The White Stripes are gonna get it together one day and make an awesome masterpiece of garage-punk. But I also think that's gonna be five years or so in the future. As of now, we've got White Blood Cells, Elephant and Get Behind Me Satan, three fine records by a good but slightly overrated group.

Combining girl-group hooks and harmonies with high-octane, Motor City garage rock, the Detroit Cobras conjure the 1960s era of Top 40 AM radio and vinyl 45s. Though the results are considerably poppier than the band's name and the light bondage of the album title and cover might suggest, singer Rachel Nagy has attitude to burn and the mixed-gender band plays with plenty of rough-hewn energy. Material (none of it written by the band) includes minor '60s hits such as "Nothing But a Heartache" and "Leave My Kitten Alone," obscurities from classic songwriters such as Gerry Goffin and Jerry Ragavoy (as well as James Brown and Dr. John) and a hopped-up rendition of the Depression-era folk standard "On a Monday." --Don McLeeseCustomer Reviews:

Between their name, stage introductions spoken in a uniquely twisted form of Spanglish, bizarre lucha libre attire, and ongoing association with Latino rockabilly revivalist Big Sandy, Spanish has always been a major facet of Los Straitjackets' shtick. So it's little surprise that the Nashville-based garage/surf/twang/trash rockers decided to head south of the border for an all-covers album. You don't need to hablar español to shimmy, shimmy, shake along with the quartet. Guest vocals from Cesar Rosas of Los Lobos (who also produced the disc), Little Willie G. of East L.A.'s vintage Thee Midniters, and Big Sandy bring a soulful strut to these punchy stompers. True to form, liberties are taken with the song titles: "Hang on Sloopy" is now "Hey Lupe," "Bony Maronie" comes out as "Popotitos," and "Dizzy Miss Lizzy" inexplicably appears as "El Microscopico Bikini." But that's all part of the fun as the masked men and singers swing through hot-tamale versions of signature hits from the Kinks, the Troggs, the Coasters, and others. Although the Fab Four aren't here as songwriters, their spirit energizes rocking renderings of "Dizzy Miss Lizzy," "Slow Down," and "Anna," all early Beatles staples. The Straitjackets haven't entirely abandoned the instrumentals from their own early years, as the scorching "Whittier Blvd." attests. Slow dancers will swoon to ballads such as "Dejenme Llorar" and Barbara Lynn's sublime "You'll Lose a Good Thing." Liner notes tell us that Spanish covers of many of these tunes managed to become moderate hits in the '60s and '70s, but it's safe to say these fresh versions will spice up any carnival. Let the fiesta begin! --Hal HorowitzCustomer Reviews:

However, just because I desire a bit more skill and could do without "Apple Blossom" and prefer Son House's "Death Letter Blues", doesn't mean this sucks.
I appreciate Jack's interests in old blues and heartily approve of physical violence against The Von Bondies. So as far as I'm concerned this merits a purchase but not extened play nor adulation.
