Music we all need to hear once in a while........2007-01-04
This album is well put together and I enjoy the old standards. Music is an integral part of our heritage. Often when I listen to this album, I think about what our country has been through and how very, very important it is to appreciate what we have. I spent 3 years living in France in the 60's and I cannot tell you how much all Americans looked forward to going "Home!"
Enjoy!!
A very good CD.......2005-06-16
If you like a mix of songs and marches very well played, this CD is for you. The voices of the singers are good, the music support the lyrics and it is easy to listen or to sing along. Also, nearby half of the tunes are played by the Band of the Grenadier Guards and for me, this Band is the best band to play Sousa marches and military marches. The precision of the execution is perfect, the sound is lovely and the technical quality of the recording is perfect. When I listen Anchors Aweigh, I always hear the sound of the waves and it is one of the only bands that gives me this feeling. If you have just one CD of military music to buy, you may buy this one; it is a best buy.
Revision of history.......2005-03-27
As usual, "Dixie," "The Bonnie Blue Flag," and other songs of a Southern genre are conspicuously absent. Why not throw in a couple of rap tunes to make this album truly "American?"
Lovely CD--shameful misspelling on the song titles.......2002-11-22
I do not own this CD--though it appears it would be a wonderful album to listen to. I was compelled to write my review because of the misspelling of our national anthem, The Star-Spangled Banner (as opposed to "The Star Bangled Banner" as it appears not once but twice on the song list). I do hope this error is corrected.
The Ultimate Patriotic Album.......2002-07-20
For all those patriots out there who want to listen to classical patriotic music, then get this album. This has a lot of tracks from yankee doodle march to the Washington post march. Even Amazing grace is here. The orchestras and the chorus here, gave there best performance ever.
Enjoy

Eeww!.......2006-06-19
This is like the music to one of those theme park Celebrate America type shows. The musical arrangements have that hokey, somewhat dated, overly sweet and enthusiatic feel I hate. I thought I was getting the standard versions of these songs but what I got was the cruise ship extravaganza, yuck!
this land is your land.......2006-04-17
to think that "this land is your land" is a patriotic song is laughable at best, however is a common misconception of the song. you'd think that the creators of this cd would research the songs they put on the cd a little more, and find that "this land is your land" is actually a protest song (original lyrics contained lyrics such as "on that sign there it said private property/but on the other side it didn't say nothing/that side was made for you and me", an obvious attack on capitalism".
America's Favorite Patriotic Songs.......2005-09-30
The title says it all.
Good old fashioned "goose bump" music.
Great Place to Start a Patriotic Music Collection.......2002-09-12
This choral collection features a majority of the best known and loved patriotic songs from our country's history. I'll admit I was a little leery of the choral part when I first picked it up, but I've found that, for the most part, it works really well.
It especially stands out on the acappella version of "My Country 'Tis of Thee." It's absolutely stunning. Other fun songs are "This Land is Your Land," which I really wasn't familiar with before I bought this, and a personal recent favorite song "God Bless the USA." I love having the "Armed Forces Medley" on here so I can learn these songs. And the instrumental arrangement on "Stars and Stripes Forever Medley" at the end has me taping my toes every time I hear it.
There are a couple missteps, however. I've heard better versions of "The Star Spangled Banner." I think one reason I'm disappointed with it is that they only include one verse. I love the other verses of our national anthem, and wished they'd included at least one more since they included multiple verses of all the other songs. Also, "If My People" and "God Save America," while find songs, just don't seem to fit here.
Overall, you can't go wrong with this collection. I'm just starting to look for patriotic music, and this has been a wonderful first CD.

Don Was, the producer who transformed Bonnie Raitt from cult hero to pop star, tried to jump-start the stalled careers of Willie Nelson and Waylon Jennings by producing their recent albums, Across the Borderline and Waymore's Blues (Part II), respectively. This resulted in two artistic triumphs but no hits. That didn't deter Nelson and Jennings from hiring Was to produce their album with Johnny Cash and Kris Kristofferson as the Highwaymen. The Road Goes on Forever is easily the best of the three Highwaymen albums, even if changing radio tastes will probably doom it to the poorest sales of the three. The two earlier releases, 1985's Highwaymen and 1990's Highwaymen 2, were thrown together as if the sheer star power of the four singers could carry the project. Both albums had their exciting moments when everything clicked but both also had a lot of filler. By contrast, Was approached the new recording as if every song and every arrangement had to be good enough to be a single. He picked one obscure but terrific composition from each of the four singers and supplemented them with equally strong material from four of Texas's best songwriters--Steve Earle, Billy Joe Shaver, Robert Earl Keen Jr., and Stephen Bruton. Nelson's harmonica ace Mickey Raphael and Kristofferson's singing buddy Billy Swan are joined by top L.A. session pros like keyboardist Benmont Tench and drummer Kenny Aronoff to create a sound that has the twangy picking of old-fashioned country and the fat bottom of modern pop. The result is an album with everything: first-rate material, grade-A playing, and inimitable singing. The thread that ties Nelson, Jennings, Cash, and Kristofferson together is the crustiness of their voices (a honey-voiced singer like George Jones or Don Gibson would seem out of place in this crowd); when they sing Shaver's "(I'm Going To) Live Forever," they sound as if they're more than halfway there. The Highwaymen are so naturally hard-bitten and world-weary that they can slip a little sentiment into a song without spoiling it. They use this to great advantage on the album's two great outlaw songs, Earle's "The Devil's Right Hand" and Keen's title tune; the gruff tales of violence lead up to a sobering admission of the price paid for such a life. That same gruffness allows the Highwaymen to sing two religious meditations, Jennings's "I Do Believe" and Cash's "Death and Hell," without once sounding sanctimonious. --Geoffrey Himes
This 10th anniversary limited edition includes a DVD containing the music video for "It Is What It Is" and a documentary, Live Forever: In the Studio with the Highwaymen.

Outstanding Performance and Collection of Songs.......2006-03-29
I am impressed with the quality of the Gramercy Brass Ensemble's performance of these traditional American Patriot pieces.
Beautiful sound, outstanding musicianship, classic yet spirited arrangements, and wide variety from national anthems to branch-specific armed forces hymns.
I would recommend this recording to anyone looking to hear American Patriotic music at its best. A very nice CD.
Great Patriotic CD.......2004-02-21
This is a great CD if you ever need or want to have patriotic music. American music played by an American brass band. This group sounds terrific. For those of you unfamiliar with brass band, it is comprised of 25 brass players and 2 or 3 percussionists. You get a rich, full sonority and these guys play GREAT! This CD is HIGHLY recommended to all bras players who want to hear tone quality, timbre, intonation, and more. Band directors would be wise to use this as a model for their students for everything from pitch to phrasing. Everybody else would be wise to pick it up if you like Americana. I know people who use this for their commute because it is upbeat and uplifting. Excellent CD!!!! You may also want to check out their second CD entitled "Christmas Time Is Here". Also highly recommended.

Though punk rock rarely emphasizes a vocalist's emotional range and subtlety, John Doe distinguished himself during the glory days of X as arguably the finest singer that punk has ever spawned. His latest solo release gives him more room to stretch, showcasing a vocal expanse that is equal parts romantic hope, world-weary resignation, and hard-boiled desperation--sometimes all at once, as on "Mama Don't" (sung with his 16-year-old daughter Veronica Jane). While rarely sounding generic or nostalgic, the music draws from the same blues and country roadhouse roots that X did (and its side project, the Knitters, did even more). The acoustic "Worried Brow" and "Twin Brother" (in harmony with Grant Lee Phillips) spotlight Doe's voice at its most supple. X fans will find that band's spirit renewed in the propulsive "Heartless," powered by Dave Alvin's guitar; the narcotic rush of "Ready" (a cautionary tale); and the songwriting collaboration with former bandmate and wife Exene Cervenka "Hwy 5," with Neko Case serving as Doe's female vocal foil. "There's doom in my heart and blood in your eyes," sings Doe in "The Losing Kind," the noirish opener. His music may have gotten softer, but John Doe hasn't. --Don McLeese
Customer Reviews:
Breathtaking.......2007-06-28
JD's solo work gets better with each new installment. Forever... is further confirmation of Doe's stunning ability to capture the breathtakingly beautiful sound of longing. Doe's voice paints the landscape of loss and heartache in poetry and music that is sparse but never simple. As with most of Doe's work, the powerful beauty of Forever becomes more apparent with each repeated listening.
Ashamed of myself.......2007-05-23
I've long time been a big fan of X and John Doe's gorgeous voice, but for some reason I hadn't picked up any of his solo records. I'm not exactly sure what I was thinking. When I heard he teamed up with Neko Case among others for this record, I had to give it a chance.
So here I am about six hours after my first listen, and I have yet to change the CD. This record is brilliant. I feel like I'm falling in love on a lonely stretch of highway.
John, I promise from here on out, you've got my ear.
Once again, John Doe proves himself to be a truly exceptional singer and songwriter.......2006-05-21
It has been ages since I've loved a CD like I love this one--
I am certain that in the years to come, music critics and fans alike will realize what an extraordinary contribution John Doe has made to the American Songbook.
Yes, folks, these are the future standards -- classically American, roots-inspired tunes, sung by the most haunting, fabulous set of male pipes out there. Doe is a "musicians' musician"...one of the best modern composers in the music business, in any genre. Only Jeff Buckley and Paul Westerberg come anywhere close to Doe.
Sing me songs forever..........2006-01-01
...I'll never get tired of them.
John Doe is a fairly new discovery for me and I can't get enough. This guy's voice is just awesome - listen to "Worried Brow" and let yourself get blown away. Listen, too, to all the lyrics, especially "Twin Brothers" for stories and emotions you can connect to. All the songs rock the blues with a unique edge only John Doe can provide, with "Losing Kind", "Worried Brow" & "Hwy. 5" my particular favorites. Praise is also well deserved by all the musicians/artists that contributed, but special mention has to be made of the vocals by Veronica Jane that complemented John's on "Mama Don't".
Same old thing AGAIN.......2005-12-20
this is redo of about maybe 1/2 of the rock albums from the late 60's and early 70's...... hasn't this been done before???

This is a great CD for any fan of the Boston Pops - especially those who have seen or been to their annual 4th of July performance - or for those who appreciate patriotic music. Many of the pieces they play at the Pops Goes the 4th concert are on the CD. My personal favorite is the 1812 Overture for its live cannons.

Sometimes a simple voice can carry the day. Take Randy Travis: his rustic, hickory-smoked warble can almost effortlessly conjure up everyday country pleasures--basic backwoods stuff that suburban folks have long forgotten. His brand of faithful retro took Nashville by surprise on Storms of Life, his 1986 debut, but Travis--thanks to poor song choices and a handful of awkwardly-penned originals--failed to maintain those lofty standards. But this, his second effort, from 1987, stands as his best--and his most commercially viable as well. It perfectly showcases those stunning vocals and opened the door for countless similar-piped honky-tonkers. His voice still waxes strong these days, but it's great to hear him hit homer after homer in this classic Always inning. --Tom Lanham

Country at it's best.......2007-01-04
The reason I bought this album (again) is to remind me of what Country music should sounnd like.
Always & Forever by Randy Travis.......2006-08-07
I am pretty new to country music and tend to like the older, softer balladeers. I wasn't crazy about Randy's voice at first but soon it really grew on me. Great lyrics that stay with you...
Doesn't get any better!.......2006-05-09
I listened to this album every day for months when it came out in 1987, and into Summer 1988. Randy Travis was the "IT" guy, guest starring on late night TV and breathing new life into country music. I was a huge fan, and am still a huge fan. His voice is unique and a gift. This album is superb, natural country music. Delightful!
Classic Travis.......2005-08-20
This is one of his best CD's! I listen to it over and over again!
It's wonderful!!!.......2004-05-02

Customer Reviews:
The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra needs a guitar player!.......2006-11-09
Granted, they only need it for one composition (the last one, "The James Bond Theme") but still, without the guitar it's just not the same. Barry didn't compose this one so I suppose it was a bonus and I shouldn't complain, really. The rest of the music on all the CDs is fantastic. Some of the stuff I had heard before without realizing who had composed it. Very enjoyable, to say the least.
Persuaders Theme!.......2006-03-02
Buy it for the Persuaders theme, probably the best TV theme song ever written.
A Variety Of Classics!.......2005-12-06
John Barry has been composing film scores for over forty years and this is only scratching the surface of his productions. Never mind that the entire set is recorded by the Prague Philharmonic; it's pure to Barry's themes. While John Williams compositions ("Star Wars", etc.) are wild and flamboyant and Jerry Goldsmith's (Hoosier's, etc.) are mood pieces, John Barry crosses over all barriers and is amazingly diverse. Barry has recorded most of the exciting James Bond themes, melodramatic classics like "The Lion In Winter' and moody theme hits like "Midnight Cowboy". He also tugs at the heartstrings with compositions from, "Somewhere In Time", "Frances" and "Out Of Africa". He varies his themes for all types of films and few composers capture it so well.
There is over four hours of music in this set with a colorful and informative booklet.
Incredible Barry Collection.......2004-03-11
Any fan of movies will absolutley love this collection. Being a movie buff I couldn't wait to get this boxed set. Knowing Barry from all the James Bond movies, I did not realize his involvement with so many others. The orchestra is magnificent in all these themes. I'm listening to "High Road to China" right now and I'm drifting in the clouds in a Tiger Moth with Tom Selleck and Bess Armstrong. If you are familiar with a movie it will definitely have you seeing it again, if not the scores are still beautiful. Any fan of classical music will be pleased as well. Travellers will defintitely enjoy it for a long drive. I know from when I use to travel that music like this made the miles float by faster. I highly recommend these four CDs even if you just know a handful of the songs.

Customer Reviews:
not to great.......2007-04-04
We were disappointed with this CD, but for the price I guess we can't expect much. I didn't care for the new style presentation of the songs. I like a more traditional rendering.
Not so bad, 100 tunes for 4$.......2005-06-22
I red the comments of two other people who have bought this 4 CD BOX SET and it is not really so bad. I will even add that there are some excellent tunes. However, I must agree with the fact that few tunes seem to have been recorded 40 or 50 years ago, mainly when you hear the scratches of an old turntable but it is just 2 or 3 tunes. Furthermore, if you do not know American music, it is a good BOX SET to buy if you consider that you received 4 CD for 4$ including 100 tunes. On these 4 CD, I have heard some orchestration that I have never heard before and I consider that they are different but interesting. Any way, after hearing these 100 tunes, you will say to yourself that you like this tune, this other tune, this other tune and so on and you will be able to buy a more expensive CD with the tunes that you like. However, I have bought many CDs in the last few weeks and as you know, there are always some tunes that you like and some tunes that you do not like on every CD that you will buy. So, don't buy it at 25$ but at 4 or 5$ dollars, it is a very good choice for 100 tunes.
You get what you pay for........2004-07-04
You get what you pay for. The singers put their own spin on the singing of each song. If you didn't hear the words you would not recognize some of them. Even some of the music sounds like a bad recording of music played on a turntable. Definitely not worth the price.
Now I know why there were no song samples to listen to ..........2004-07-04
I wish this review had been here when I was thinking of purchasing it. I guess you get what you pay for. If you are thinking of buying this, you are better off recording your own CDs (or at least buying one that you can listen to a sampling of the songs). This album includes songs that were mere recordings of the songs playing on an old record player. It's almost so unbelievable that it is funny.
