This is one of the best worship cd's ever. I never get tired of listening to these awesome songs. Maranatha.

4 out of 5 stars Still in my CD collection.......2007-02-10

I love this CD. The Praise and worship is awesome. I enjoy just sleeping and listening to the Praise of God. All the Passion CDs have easy songs to learn and are great for everyday.

5 out of 5 stars I love this CD.......2002-08-21

Out church loves this CD we are a non-Denominational church. We are more modern the most churchs we sing worship music like this. Our praise band sings 8 out of 10 of the songs on this CD it is Great!!!!

5 out of 5 stars One of the best P&W CDs.......2002-05-17

This CD has on it "Amazing Love" which is the quintessential worship song. It perfectly describes what happened at the Cross and the entire message of the Gospel and God's love for us. This CD is worth that one song. But, in addition to that, this CD has other great songs like "Better is One Day". This CD rocks and glorifies God. Get it. > <>

5 out of 5 stars One of the best Live Worship CD's -- very uplifting.......2002-02-19

This is definitely one of my favorite praise/worship CD's. Charlie Hall and the other worship leaders on this CD are higly gifted and anointed, which is evident when listening to every track. The worship music is upbeat and very uplifting.

My favorite songs on this CD are "You're Worthy of My Praise," "Better Is One Day," "I've Found Jesus," and "Agnus Dei." The pastor at the church I attend has incorporated these songs into the praise and worship service; he has been singing them for some time now. His version of "Better Is One Day" is amazing. Any of these songs (as well as the other songs on this CD and other Passion CD's) would be valuable additions to praise/worship services.

This is definitely a worthwhile addition to your Worship Music collection.

5 out of 5 stars American Music of Hope and Glory.......2007-04-09

Although I have known about Sacred Harp Music for many years, this album utterly overwhelmed me in its power, beauty and expression of pure American strength and faithful surety. I grew up in the churches of Christ, one of the few American denominations that uses only a capella four-part harmony vocal music in their worship services. Shape notes were known to me since I was able to understand a musical staff, and we used shape notes for each note on the scale (a few more than The Sacred Harp Tradition). Alas, over time, the immense power and beauty of true Sacred Harp music was "homogenized" into congregational singing that remains quite beautiful, but no longer has the vigor of The Sacred Harp tradition. (The churches of Christ still, to this day, occasionally have "Sings" - an all afternoon singing festival with food and fellowship, as do Sacred Harp "Singing Classes" today). This album above all speaks - rather SINGS to the immense faith of Frontier America, and the absolutely majesterial beauty of music well-sung from the human heart, which is, of course, The "Sacred Harp". To any who want to experience a new (and very old) musical tradition, this recording will be one that you will never forget. All choral music singers and admirers should own this marvelous album. (Having a copy of the "1991 Sacred Harp Hymnal" in hand will make your enjoyment all the better!)

5 out of 5 stars Unbridled spiritual energy.......2005-01-01

Anyone who saw "Cold Mountain" and was struck by the vitality and energy of the hymn singing in that one brief scene in church will be immediately impressed with this stunning album. The album's only flaw is that, unfortunately, it does not include that hymn that was in "Cold Mountain" (it is titled "I'm Going Home").

Otherwise, it is pure joy to listen to. The singing is full of that same raw passion that makes it sound so primitive. I've heard other albums where the sound is polished, concert-hall like, and as a result very dead. This is not that way; it moves and stirs as good spiritual music ought to.

This is a new field of music for me, even though I've sung in church choirs for years and listened to all kinds of classical music. Hearing this album makes me want to go find the sheet music and start singing it myself, it is so infectious.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Sheer beauty from Agnes Baltsa.......2005-06-23

This disc from Agnes Baltsa (Greek opera-singer) containing the most beautiful Greek songs is a real treat. It's recorded in the -80s when she was around 40 and in her prime. The songs are written by famous Greek composers like Theodorakis, Hadjidakis and Tsitsanis. My only complaint is that the cd only contains 11 songs. I wish it had at least 11 more.... But fortunately, my cd-player has a "repeat-button".......(Which I might add, is soon worn-out..)

For people unfamiliar with either Greek music or opera, this is the place to start. To me it seems that Greek music often is a matter of strong likes/dislikes, as is opera. You either love it or you hate it. After listening to this disc you will definitely want to seek out more recordings of Greek music and/or opera-recordings featuring Agnes Baltsa.

I know and love Agnes Baltsa from the opera stage, but even so, this record still amazes me. You will not hear her belt out painfully high notes like an opera-star on this cd - just beautiful singing throughout the whole disc. She also has a clear phrasing which I think is great, because it enables me to understand what the songs are all about. Being a classically trained singer one should perhaps think her voice unsuitable for simple-styled Greek folk songs. You couldn't be more wrong. Her crystal clear voice lends an elegancy to the songs that has to be heard to be believed. I'm a long time fan of Greek music and own a lot of recordings from various Greek artists, but never have I heard these songs so beautifully sung. This is definitely my "desert-island-recording" of Greek songs. I never tire of hearing them played again and again and again....

My favourite tracks from the disc have to be "Oniro pedion tis gitonias", "to treno fevgi stis okto", "O tahidromos" and "Arhontissa" and not to mention "Varkarolla". Her voice is just so hauntingly beautiful in these tracks. Don't be surprised if you end up in tears. But really, all the tracks are real treasures, gift-wrapped in Baltsa's velvet voice. It's a treat to hear Baltsa sing in her native tongue for the first time. It's obvious that she feels perfectly at ease here. She captures the melancholic beauty of the Greek soul so wonderfully. To me it's a mystery why she hasn't recorded more of this sort (at least I haven't been able to find any...)

The Athens Experimental Orchestra which is playing on this disc also deserves some words of praise. They make the Greek instruments sound heavenly and in the instrumental parts of the songs you just want to get up and dance.

This disc is really a proof of Greek supremacy - the music, the lyrics and Agnes Baltsa's singing - so simple and yet so powerful and breathtakingly beautiful. What more can I say? Just buy the cd ASAP!

5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Collection.......2004-12-10

This album was first released by Deutsche Grammophon (DG) in 1986 under the title "Agnes Baltsa, Songs My Country Taught Me." I have owned it and enjoyed it for probably 15 years. It's a wonderful collection of very melodious Greek folk songs with fine arrangements sung by one of the great mezzo sopranos of our time. It's great that DG has seen fit to re-release it so many of you can also enjoy it. Buy it; you won't regret it.

4 out of 5 stars Great compilation.......2002-05-10

I don't actually own this particular compilation, however, since I own nearly every recording represented on these discs...I think I'm qualified to comment. This is a wonderful representation of the high quality of work that DRG Records does.
The previous review is way off the mark. This is definitely not a waste of time or money. This is 25 years of preserving Broadway shows, Off-Broadway shows, studio recordings (mostly from the city center concerts), etc. So what if they "aren't as good as the original", DRG is preserving many recordings and artists that other mainstream labels don't or won't. You have wonderful recordings from Brian Stokes Mitchell, Nathan Lane, Debbie Gravitte, Tyne Daly, Anthony Perkins, Joanna Gleason, Marin Mazzie, Carol Burnett, Heather Headley, Patti LuPone, Barbara Cook, etc., and many of these are from Original Cast Recordings just as they appeared on Broadway. This is an excellent sampler of the work going on at DRG. No...I'm not an employee...just an avid listener and collector of theatre recordings.

1 out of 5 stars A disappointment.......2001-12-15

There's a reason you've probably never heard of most of the songs and shows on this album, not to mention most of the artists. This is a second-rate collection of second-rate numbers performed by mostly second-rate artists. In the case of the shows that were revivals, the performances on the original cast recordings were better. Don't waste your money.

Given the two belated live-action sequels and numerous other TV and video spinoffs spawned by Disney's charming 1961 animated original, the Dalmatian count is more like 1,001 by now. This reissued soundtrack (admirably restored in the late '90s by producer Randy Thornton) showcases the original orchestral film cues of George Bruns to good effect. While the composer's bright, lively work was largely fragmentary (originally written as punctuation for the film's turns of action and comedy), its components have been skillfully sequenced and gently edited here for a more cohesive listening experience. The film's most memorable musical moments remain Mel Levin's delightful trio of songs, "Kanine Krunchies," "Dalmatian Plantation," and, of course, the classic villainess romp "Cruella DeVil." Bonus cuts include both a bluesy piano rendition and Levin's decidedly goofy piano/vocal demo of the latter tune. A great primer to Disney's animation underscore philosophy, seasoned with one of the studio's most memorable songs. --Jerry McCulley

The third release by this alternative folk-rock "supergroup" is its most focused. That's surprising given that the band expertly drifts between numerous Americana musical styles, including country twang (Vicki Peterson's "That Much a Fool"), Sir Douglas Quintet-like Tex-Mex, and good old garage rock, often backed with the same type of classic pop harmonies found in the Bangles, the dB's, and the Cowsills--that is, the bands in which the key members here cut their teeth. Better Day rocks more than 1999's Vermilion did--and while it's not Rumours-like in scope (thank God), the dissolution of the marriage of cofounders Susan Cowsill and Peter Holsapple is both humorously and compassionately addressed in the bookends "(Down by the) Great Mistake" and "Peaceful Waking." In addition to great songs by five different composers, the mix of horns, accordions, swirling organs, mandolins, and of course, guitars, are simply awe-inspiring, representing both a New Orleans ethos as well as the Los Angeles the Drifters left behind in the early '90s. --Bill Holdship

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The best album I've heard in a long time.......2004-02-08

I am not a music critic, but this album stands out in my collection as a masterful weaving of thoughtful songwriting conveyed with genuine emotion. The album's break-up songs play against each other in a way that paints the hope that was with the disillusionment that is against the cautious expectation of what is to come. The topic sentence for this album may be the first lines of Vicky Peterson's "Na NA" (also the first song) "This is the story of my life / Somebody's little girl to someone else's wife / And what happened in between / Is the dying of a dream". In a real autobiographical way, Fleetwood Mac's "Rumours" can't help but come to mind when you experience this album.

5 out of 5 stars best yet.......2001-09-29

While I was much impressed with Vermilion, and the self-titled debut was above average, both were spotty, with some songs that were pure gold and others that I'd just as soon skip over (though not many). Better Days is a much better overall effort. The writing is much more consistent, and the arrangements (ranging from r&b to solid rock and roll to digging-deep-into-the-heart introspective knock outs)are superb. What impresses me the most is the overall writing on the recording. What really impresses me even more is the light years that Susan Cowsill's contributions have improved - I suppose wrenching personal loss is always an artistic jumpstart. Her Peaceful Wakings is easily the best single cut on any of their albums (excuse me - CDs). Having said that, this makes for a welcome advance from a band that probably won't sell monster amounts of numbers, but if it touches you . . . it will touch you deeply. Get it.

5 out of 5 stars Real Music from Real People.......2001-07-03

A New Orleans band that's not really from New Orleans...that's a hard thing for New Orleanians to accept. (It's just the way we are.) But in New Orleans, the Drifters are big favorites. Here's why...they pretend to be nothing more than what they are. They dish up home-spun rock and heart-felt ballads, accented by subtle accordians and banjos that bring a smile to those of us who really don't care that much for accordians and banjos. These are real people making real music, and it's amazing to me that I never even knew of them til I heard this CD. If I have any criticism it's that the mix seems just a bit muddy, but it makes the CD sound like a live recording, and maybe that's just what the band wanted.

5 out of 5 stars Another amazing CD.......2001-06-07

Yet again the Drifters deliver some of the best music that can be heard today. The songwriting, harmonies... everything brings you in and won't let you go. Take a break from bubble-gum pop, and listen to music with feeling, intelligence and emotion.

5 out of 5 stars Every day is a "Better Day".......2001-06-07

The Continental Drifters have done it again. Not seeing the need to duplicate the wonderful "Vermilion", they have crafted "Better Day", a brilliant, and totally different, CD of 12 original songs that speak of joy, sorrow, life, love, missed chances and lost innocence. From the first track, Vicki Peterson's snappy "Na Na", to the last, Peter Holsapple's brilliantly bluesy "Where Did the Time Go?", this disk serves up a diverse series of songs that will keep you coming back for more. You'll be left wondering how it all fits together so seamlessly since these guys touch on an incredible variety of song styles, from rock to pop to country to blues and everything in between. But it does. Boy, does it ever! There are songs here that belong on Top-40 radio, the aforementioned Peterson-penned "Na Na", Susan Cowsill's shimmering "Someday", and Holsapple's horn-filled nugget "Live on Love" that stirs up memories of the '70's. (Of course, since they are smart, well-crafted songs, don't ever expect to hear them there). Mark Walton, the only founding member still with the band, makes his lead vocal debut on "Tomorrow's Gonna Be", an accordion and organ-laced tune that reminds you that no matter how bad it seems, things can, and will, get better (the lyrics to this song also provided the album's title). Peterson's country-tinged "That Much a Fool", featuring Holsapple's accordion and Robert Mache's sparkling mandolin, tells the story of a love that happened too late, while Cowsill's "Cousin" tells one of an innocent love from a more innocent time. There's "(Down by the) Great Mistake", a 60's-tinged he said-she said between Holsapple and Peterson that will make you chuckle, or shake your head, probably because you've been there before. "Snow", a heartfelt ballad of one's lost childhood and the innocence that went with it, features Susan Cowsill's expressive, impressive vocals wrapped around powerful, moving lyrics. The wonderful "Na Na" is an out and out rocker and, in Peterson's own words, "a raspberry" to those who would hold us back and keep us down. "Too Little, Too Late" is a rocking tale of missed opportunities, mainly due to arrogance, not pride. Once again, a horn section kicks this song into another realm. The ballad "Peaceful Waking", a collaboration between Cowsill and drummer Russ Broussard, touches close to the heart of anyone who can't seem to let go, even though they know they must. Lyrically, it reminds me of Fleetwood Mac's stripped down "Songbird." Peterson's "Long Journey Home" sounds like it would be a forlorn tale, instead it's got an upbeat, finger-snapping tempo topped with a jangly piano. It could also be the only pop song ever recorded to feature, and successfully rhyme, the word "guillotine." It all ends with Holsapple's "Where Did the Time Go?", a bluesy tune so evocative you can almost see the smokey dive filled with broken-hearted lovers crying in their drinks. This disk is the perfect accompaniment to the Continental Drifters previous efforts, another collection of 12 wonderfully crafted songs by 5 incredibly talented musicians who really seem to enjoy what they're doing. This is the Drifters at their very best. The only thing better than their recorded works is seeing them do it all live.

This performance, the only one available in English, is problematic. Best is Yves Abel's leadership of the orchestra, which sounds wonderful, imbuing Puccini's lush score with just the right exoticism and emphasis. But aside from Gregory Yurisch's fine Sharpless, the singers don't please. Paul Charles Clarke as Pinkerton is lacking stylistically and vocally, and as Butterfly, Cheryl Barker sounds under strain and never pretty. While she has the power and feeling for the big second-act climax (the sighting of the ship), she never for a moment sounds fragile or girlish, not even in the all-important early scenes. English or not, this set isn't in the running. Stick with Callas or Scotto in Italian, and follow the libretto. --Robert Levine

3 out of 5 stars A touching English Butterfly.......2002-03-27

Anyone familiar with Cheryl Barker's Butterfly will be interested in hearing this recording. I have heard her in the role twice - in Auckland and London - and her voice has filled out as the years have gone on. She hasn't a large italianate soprano; the sound is too slender somehow. Yet there is the paradox - it has great carrying power and a decent cutting edge to make itself heard above the orchestral climaxes. What really impresses is the sense of vulnerability and moral strength she imparts, making sense of the big moments of the secong act. The sound in Act one is gorgeous (and a super D flat in theentrance aria) and she differentiates impressively between the child-bride and the embittered woman of the two acts.

She is surrounded by a mixed supporting cast. Jean Rigby is maternal, warm and affecting as Suzuki. Gregory Yurisich makes Sharpless' dilemma more understandable than usual, rather than being completely ineffectual. Paul Charles Clarke perhaps illustrates Pinkerton's arrogance with a degree of vocal swagger, but the sound is rough-hewn and unlovely save for some moments in the love duet. Stuart Kale's Goro is suitable ingratiating and oily.

Abel's conducting is the other chief draw of this set. That he has experience of the score in the theatre means that his pacing is really superb, and the lush orchestration is given its due, the potent intermezzo during the overnight vigil sounding suitably ominous.

This won't replace the classic Butterfly recordings, but in the absendce of any new ones recently, and for acceptable diction in an English version, it is certainly worth the (not very high) price. Recommended.
